after 3 years this video is still great and legit.
the built in mic with auto wind reduction actually wasn't that bad!
Thanks for the tip
Seriously tho
agreed, seems like the simplest and most effective solution.
That's fucking awesome can just re eq / normalize the audio for other results too! Blessed
What a great test! Major service to the MTB/GoPro community 🤘
Really good review. Appreciate that you do the bike test. Thanks.
So glad I found you. Have a Hero 10 so this is still applicable. Great options here I hadn’t heard before. You got me as a new subscriber.
Thank you for the video it was very informative. I was thinking about getting the media mod but may look into other options. Thanks again!
Informative piece of work sir,
Congratulations 👍🏽
Wow dude insane review for each Mic.
It's clearly comparing the discrepancy with Pros and cons
Probably the most underrated video on UA-cam. Give this man more views.
Great video. Thanks for taking time to test them all.
Haven't started recording anything yet, but this was super helpful to decide whether I needed anything extra/additional. I'm going to go the route of a wind screen or fuzzy thing like you had. Sounded great.
Video starts at 4:47
Great review. I just purchased my first GoPro and picked up the Hero 9. So next thing I was looking for was a mic, and that's when I came across your channel and really enjoyed your recommendations. Just subscribed to your channel as well. Great job. Thanks and be safe. And BTW...the ETM 001 sounds great, but probably going to pick up all that you have shown in this video.
this is sure a nice and well put together video! This ws really helpful for me. Im gonna pick up a GoPro 9 soon for our UA-cam videos
Great tips CG.
Ive found filming with my samsung note 10 to be incredible wind reduction.
I've actually yet to use a Samsung phone since I've been using Pixel phones for the last few years. But the camera looks incredible on those. Cheers!
Great product review! Thanks.
Thanks for all the test very helpful
Nice video clint. I appreciate it
Great test. Lav is best for voice as you said. Built in mic with auto wind reduction seems the best and most practical overall.
Great video, thank you 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 I just bought this camera and this helped a little :)
Built-in mic works great when wind reduction turned on .... In respect no extra costs
Great review. Was looking at the Rode Wireless Go as an option for my GoPro HERO9, but now might just throw an ETM on it instead.
The ETM 001 sounds great!
Thank you! This was a huge help!
Just found your channel due to your gopro stuff. You seem like a pretty cool dude. Keep up the good work.
I just bought my GO PRO HERO 9 black a month ago but until now i cannot install microphone. Very good tutorial now i learn a lot thanks for sharing stay safe and connected my new friend
The lav mic is what I would go with. The wire may be cumbersome but the sound is cleanest of all the mics.
Great direct comparison. If I end up vlogging I might pick up that ETM001.
I just ordered the media mod 3 days ago because I had massive wind noise on my first ride with the 9. However yesterday i did a test ride with all 3 mics covered with bits of fur (previously, i only had the top and bottom covered) and the wind noise is gone. For my rinky dink videos the sound is good enough.
Check out my hack. I use a wrist sweat band which almost totally kills wind noise.
best test thank you very much!!
Thank you for the information
Love the etm mic!
Thanks! This video is very helpful.
Thanks Clint, I've just started my own channel and so far don't have a mic outside the built-in one on my Go-Pro. Still scratching my head a bit deciding which to get but this was really helpful.
Definitely etm-001 is my favorite based on your footage audio. I like the clarity and crispness. I know, you mentioned it's omnidirectional and depending on the application may not be the best choice but it would be my go-to mic for majority of scenarios. Others sounded muffled too much. Thanks for sharing.
My Gopro 9 will be here in a couple days i do want to get the mod as for now will be using my old setup 001 with the Mic Adaptor. Nice review thanks for sharing.
very useful video ty
Thanks for doing this test. I recently got the Hero10 and used the media mod mic a few times. I don't like it. It sounds tinny, and this is exemplified in your testing as well. I like the lab mic best, but it's not as convenient. I got a windslayer foam type thing I'll be trying out to help the onboard mics perform better in the wind.
Beautiful SkyView
nice video it help me to understand more about mic
Excellent video.
Thanks 👍 hello from Kazakhstan
Great comparison. Useful. You got my like. :)
Great video 😊
I also own the Edutige ETM-001 and like it very much. But one of the most underrated mics out there is the Sony ECM-CS3. It's basically the Edutige, but in stereo when you need it. Disneyland or any theme park is a situation where you want to capture all the ambient sounds around you in a more immersive discrete 2-channel setup. It sounds great on a home theater. The only knock on the Sony is that it has a long 3 ft cord, which can get in the way at times.
I'm actually looking to get a GoPro for Disney and came across this channel.. would the ETM-001 work best or would the built in mic be okay? thanks
Nice video 👍🏼
Awesome video
Just subscribed!
Thanks
Thank you very much
Great video sir...i just got my Gopro hero 9
Built-in mic works great :) ilove it
After watching other videos on the 9, I put a dead cat on the front and another on the top mic (over the hole close to the record button) and haven’t had any wind noise issues with the setting set to off. I didn’t test it without that second dead cat, but you might give that a try.
Thanks. The only issue is putting one on the other mic is I cannot use the media mod without taking it off. But good suggestion.
I liked the sound from the media module the most...
I got the media mod, too. And as in your video it's internal mic sounds worse then the gopro's.
But the hero 9 mics regularly add some crackling/pop sound into the audio chanells.
Built-in mic does sound the best, maybe not the greatest sounding, but considering all other points, I think its the best option. Cheaper, less setup, less cumbersome, etc.
Good comparisons, thanks. Why not test the Wireless Go without the Lav? It works great as a standalone unit and no wires to deal with.
ive watched a bunch of videos and the built-in mic sounds far better than the media mod mic. External accesories are usually outsourced and lower quality
Its very nice video stay safe stay blessed
Media Mod sounds totally good to me and I'm usually pretty particular about this stuff (hens why I'm watching this comparison).
Hey Clint! Thank you for doing this. Your video is one of the most clear and articulate “shootout” comparison type videos I’ve ever seen. Very cool and very helpful. Do you ever use a wireless version of that lav mic? Does that exist? Thanks again!
I use the Rode Wireless Go now. I use an adapter and hook that lav mic up to it. It's pretty much my go-to setup now.
Great review and suggestions. Thank you!! Do you have a link to the fuzzy mic cover for the ETM 001? TIA
Hero 9 is a game changer
Nailing the audio is always my biggest challenge.
I think the GoPro audio is good enough to vlog without need extra mic.
Great video! I noticed during the mic test that the video was kind of shaky at times. Was stabilization turned off?
It was on. Not sure why it was shaky.
Hey, I got the ETM001, not sure if mine is defective but ive tried different types of foam and dead cats but once I get to about 30km/h on the bike the wind noise litterally cuts the audio in and out, sounds like its 'clipping'. Do I just need to try to cut down on wind noise even more?
Have you thought about a wireless lav mic & recorder like the Tascam DR-10L? It’s a separate device and requires syncing but it might be better overall for riding and vlogging where you can then mix sound sources.
I use the Rode Wireless Go when I can.
Have you given any thought to using a Zoom Handy H1n Digital recorder with a lav mic and put the recorder in your pocket? You can sync the audio to the video in post and not worry about needing the Media mod.
Definitely a good option. For me, when I use the GoPro, I'm shooting a lot of short clips so syncing audio from an external device would take a lot of editing time.
This was very helpful, thank you! But can we talk about the incredible homes in your neighborhood?? WOW! Those are multi million dollar houses here in San Diego, CA.
Benefit of being in Florida 🙂
Hey buddy, great vid. So all our vids here are using the 9, but with full foam cover, which can be a pain. It can come loose and get in way of screen or soak up water and become muffled. I tried two of the stick on wind mufflers over both mics, but wind noise was terrible! Some subscribers said if using the fury things, there's also a third drain hole to cover up, but I don't know where! Our problem in the UK is lots of rain!! Any advice very appreciated!
Cheers, Jim
The drain mic is on the opposite side of the camera as the power button (I don't have the camera with me so I can't tell you which side that is). I have not tried to cover it yet but will soon. I've noticed with the camera on my chest and the stick on windscreen on the front microphone only, I get good audio. but I think if you just have the camera out and about you're going to need to cover all three to get the best sound.
@@ClintGibbs thanks a lot buddy, appreciate the reply
There is another mic on top of the gopro that needs a dead cat. That will make awesome audio with wind reduction turned off. It is by the record button.
I thought the lav was best. That can work wireless yes? Great clip
Yes, with the Rode Wireless GO
I agree with you, the Media Mod microphone sounded less quality than the built in one. I'm becoming more convinced that the GoPro is the best for the money for a beginner.....thanks for your video comparison
Have u considered putting a compressor and limited on the audio tracks?
Great video. I just have two questions for you. Why not have the wind reduction feature turned on all the time, and where did you get the wind screen? Thanks for the content
I leave win reduction off because when it kicks on (assuming it was on auto) it really degrade the audio quality. If you keep a windscreen on, you should not have any issues except for super high wind.
amzn.to/3QXtU7i
Good review of the various mic's but I would have liked you to have tested the Rode Wireless GO as well. Still a BIG thumbs up.
There really is no difference in audio quality if I use the wireless go versus plugging the smart lav plus directly into the media mod.
Great video thank you very much. I'm trying to find a mic set up that I can use for car racing and the cameras outside so how do I reduce that much wind noise?
You'll need to get the adhesive deadcats to stick on the microphones.
@@ClintGibbs thank you for the response. I'm assuming if an external mic comes with a dead cat it would work well in heavy wind.
@@ClaytonYatescarenthusiast Yes, it should
Can you plug the SmartLav + into the media mod with the TRRS to TRS adaptor? I've tried and hasn't been working, im not sure if the adaptor is just bad.
Yes. Just to make sure you've got it straight, the lav mic is a TRRS microphone and you need an adapter to take it to a TRS. I think that's what you said but just wanted to clarify.
The ETM-001 elbow adapter that you have linked and that you show in the video is a TRS to TRRS adapter. I didn’t think that worked?? Please advise. Thank you. Great info in this video.
It's been a few moons since I purchased that, but the 001 is a TRS and the GoPro is a TRS so you need to stay TRS. Hope this helps.
I actually think the Built in GoPro mic sounded the best, other then the lapel mic.
Do you think the ETM-001 would be good for POV driving videos for my channel?
It's a very sensitive microphone so you need to make sure you have a good windscreen on it. But I would first try a windslayer and use the built-in microphone.
@@ClintGibbs thanks, Clint!
I would go for the build in microphones on that thing, and I wonder if the build in mic pick up your voice when behind the camera coz im often walk behind the camera and talk, i use the hero 7 because the hero 8 is useless for me in that matter..
Thanks for sharing.. //freddie
Mount GoPro Hero 7 Black to motorcycle handlebars with a sound sponge, no helmet, while riding lean forward and shout at the GoPro when commenting. I get an echo in my recordings which can be heard at the very beginning of my recent Part 2 video if you want to see what I mean to comment, only going about 40mph there. Someone suggested it's the 3 mics on the GoPro causing it??? From this review, I am thinking of using my GoPro mic adapter with the ETM-003 shotgun mic you mention and the 90-degree adapter. (actually just saw they don't have that so maybe the ETM-008) Your thoughts and any links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for doing this video.
Few years later, here I am with the comment, mate, where did you buy that furry thing that you put on your GoPro camera? I think that for my needs, the built in mic with that thing is more than enough. :) Thanks! Btw, I subscribed, great content!
I'm still running the Hero 7. Worth getting the 9? Thanks, Clint! Always enjoy your content!
I would say yes. Stabilization on the 9 is better. And I REALLY like the front screen.
Super yes
Little different but what mic would you recommend to pickup vehicle noise I like to capture motorsports style videos
Honestly for that I think the built-in mic of the GoPro would be best. Just get the foam wind screen and use the internal mics. That’s what I would do
@@ClintGibbs alright I’ll try that thank you!
Very good and informative video .
I am using gopro 9 black for my v logs .
I tried different external mics like dji , rod , sarmon , and many more brands .
All these mic are cordless .
But problem is this when you connect all these mic through media mod your camera will not be water proof more because you relase the water sealed cover from camera to connect the media mod .
What is hectic problem 😕
If gopro company gives a Bluetooth connected external mic option it will be great and there will be no problem with camera waterproofing
In my opinion the original built-in mic is better .
Great review. I just wish you would have mounted the camera to your person( chest/ chin bar ) then tested the audio. Most bikers/ MTBers narrate videos that way. The audio from the GoPro mic actually sounds much worse when your not speaking directly in front of it
Great video, thanks. Where do you buy the fury wind screens from?
Check out the links I put in the description of the video and it will direct you to those.
This video was so insanely helpful. May I ask: I am a fisherman who prefers to mount his GoPro 9 to his head. It often happens that I am fishing next to a road or in windy situations. Would you be able to recommend a setup for such an application?
It sounds like you need to keep it waterproof. In that case I would put a foam windscreen over it or put the sticky dead cats on the three microphones.
Wish you would have showed how to actually set these up
Do you recommend the Hero 9 for multi use? (i.e recording both my appliances and maybe also my night biking rides?)
The Hero 9 is still a good camera. But the hero 10 has GoPros own processor so I found it to be much more stable in terms of not crashing. For night riding the GoPro can suffer a bit so you need a really bright light. GoPros are just not that great in low light.
awesome video! question, what ulanzi cold shoe adapter is that?
amzn.to/3Om5pxD
one more question clint! do u have any tests with the etm001 with the wind muff with no L adapter? i want to try to avoid the extra adapter because im afraid through time it will not point straight up.
The internal mic with auto wind reduction was pretty good.
How does the rode video mic go sound by itself on the bike?
I haven’t tried it since it’s too big for me to carry out on a ride. But the windscreen is very good so I’m sure it would sound about the same as it did when I was standing still.
I use a chest mount, and I need to keep the microphone away from my mouth, so that it doesn't record my breathing. What solution can be found with Hero 9 to place the external microphone ( without mod ) and hold it on the handlebars of the bike?
Without the media mod you can really only rely on the built-in mic.
Hi Clint, thanks for this video! I'm looking for a high quality mic for live concert footage of both the crowd and live music. Which one of these mics would you recommend for my application?
I'd go for the Edutige mic for that.
I'm here because I have a Hero 9 also and the media mod mic sounds muffled in comparison to the on board mic. I like the sound of the mic you used with the 90 degree adaptor the best. Question, when using the wireless rode device are there any issues with the audio not syncing to the video? Your video was very helpful. Thank you.
No, the Rode wireless go works perfectly with the GoPro. Most of the time when I'm using an external microphone I'm using my Sony ZV1 now, but the The GoPro and Rode setup is also very good.
@@ClintGibbs thank you very much!
Nice vid, thank you for the info. As a GoPro Hero 9 newbie, can you explain what my options for a mic ADAPTER are, if I don't want to go with a media mod? I've heard the dongle is terrible. What do you recommend outside of the media mod if I want to go with a lav mic? Thanks in advance!
Media mod is your only option as far as I know. Even the old dongle will not work on the Hero 9.
@@ClintGibbs Awesome man...thank you!
Clint, been using the 001 since Hero 7, 8, and now Hero 9. I still use the go pro adapter "dongle" thing because I don't see the purpose for me to get the media mod. I just use the door from Ulanzi that has the hole to fit the dongle perfect. Much more lighter and simpler for use. They also make a protective silicone case for the Hero 9 that has the hole for the dongle. I think Ulanzi realizes the sound from H9B is still not good and people will still be using the dongle for other mics. Still think the 001 is the best set up on pov bike footage. By the way, learned about that mic from you, thanks for that video a time back!
Hello. Which adapter do you use to connect the 001 microphone? The door is now on sale on the official website.
@@imennote3002 I use the 3.5mm GoPro mic adapter, its not cheap though at $50. But it's held up well after 2 years of usage. Thanks for the tip on the door.
@@travelthenarrowtrail8660 Do you use the adapter with a special case?
@@imennote3002 I used to but have not been using the silicone case recently.
@@travelthenarrowtrail8660 And how does the adapter hang down? it's not short. I also first wanted to buy an adapter, but it is with a wire, it must be placed somewhere, otherwise the microphone will hang.
can you provide a link for the adaptor and the wind cover of the ETM-001 please? thank you
@I Just thank you 😊
