Connecting A Microphone to GoPro Hero 10 Black - 2 Ways To Do It
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 жов 2021
- In this video, I am showing 2 different methods on how you can connect a microphone to your GoPro Hero 10 Black. The first and easiest way is to use the media mod as it has the required ports & cold shoes which are also needed for mounting. The second method is to use the microphone adapter that GoPro sells for earlier GoPro's. It is fully compatible with the GoPro Hero 10 Black. Lastly, I go over a few microphones that I like to use with my GoPro's, We discuss the pros and cons of both styles of microphones.

I can’t believe in 2022 there isn’t just a Bluetooth mic available that connects wirelessly and directly to the GoPro or even just a mic jack on the GoPro itself! This smells like a company trying to make even more money from its customers! Thanks for the video!
Wow, you nailed it. Good point!
Bluetooth isn’t reliable for audio transmission. Too much loss of data and latency.
Is it mandatory for gph10 users to use media mod or gp mic adapter by go pro company for external mic or can we use pass through door in go pro hero 10 and directly use type c mic adaptor other than go pro brand ?
to be fair, that is what capitalism is all about isn't it?
might have to do with the waterproof rating?
I actually find the the mic's on the media mod help cut down on wind noise during outdoor use. Nice tutorial on using a mic with your Hero 9/10. I have all the gear to do this, but most of the time I use the cheap foam winds-layer when I'm filming outdoors. Just because it's faster and easier.
Thank You so much! The only video that was able to answer my questions about mics and the GoPro clearly, succinctly, and thoroughly. Staff at Best Buy are clueless, as are so many here on the inter-tubes. I guess I'll need to spend some more cash on a "media mod" or that Ubangi-Stomp thingy. Damn.
Great information, thanks a lot Sean. Would have really liked to hear some audio samples of the different microphones though.
Indeed I would’ve been a good idea. Perhaps I should make a video with audio comparisons from a variety of popular microphones
Great video! Thanks for going over all the different options. I’m a fairly new gopro user and picked up the hero 10. Definitely going with the Ulanzi + adapter + rode mic after watching this tutorial and reading some comments. Thanks for including links too.
Good choice a lot of people do you prefer that setup. Thanks for watching
Excellent thank you, very easy to understand and follow for a newbie to gopro 👍
Super film. Dziękuję za Twoją pracę.
Thanks for walking through the different options you have! I appreciate it!
Simple & clear presentation. Thank you
An another helpful video of comparison about exactly these both of cases that I want to see. Thanks
Just what I’ve been looking for, excellent 👌
Thank you for the video! I ordered the wireless microphone & mod case thanks to the links & explanation you provided
Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed the video
Hello from the UK
I watched with great interest at your explanation of these two setups.
My preferred option is the ulanzi cage.
However to prevent microphone intrusion into the field of veiw have you considered a smaller form factor microphone such as the Edutige 001.
I would be interested in your thoughts and possible comparisons with other leading microphones.
Thanks buddy.
Much appreciated.
Great channel btw 👍
.
Awesome details on how to use Mic. Greetings from Malaysia
A big problem with the Media Mod approach is that every time you need to change the battery or memory card, you have to remove the GoPro and Media Mod from whatever mount or grip you're using. And then you have to open up the Media Mod and remove the GoPro completely. Once you change the battery or memory card, you then have to put the whole thing back together again.
Do that two or three times during the day at the side of the road in difficult conditions, and you will soon learn to hate the Media Mod, as I do.
Not only that, the thumbscrew is deeply recessed in the Media Mod, and it's almost impossible to remove it once you tighten it. There is simply no room for your fingers to get in there and get a grip. And the thumbscrew can only be inserted from one side.
Plus my Media Mod fails to register the microphone probably 40% of the time. Sometimes it knows there's a microphone attached. Sometimes it doesn't. You just never know which way it's going to go. My GoPro Hero 9 also overheats inside the Media Mod.
For those reasons, I I think the Mic Adapter plus an Ulanzi Cage is far superior. All you need to do is pop open the side door to change the battery or the memory card. It's so simple and easy.
thanks for the insight. I'm a sound mixer, and looking to do some audio upgrades for our cam assists on shows that are quite gopro heavy. I was wondering how they would feel about the media mod cage, and I suspect they will feel how you do. Sounds like you're working in the real world, so your comments are certainly useful. I think I'll go mic adapter and cage too. sounds like the adapter works on 8/9/10s, all of which we have.
Excellent comment, thanks for the heads up. I often have to change my battery 3-5 times each time I ride and make a video.
💪😃
Yeah I use the Ulanzi and the mic adapter too, works very well and fast to switch out battery and SD card etc...😎
Was about to buy the media mod before reading your comment. Now I’m going with the Ulanzi. Thanks for the heads up!
I’m using Ulanzi for my Hero 5 too and it works a charm
Shawn,
Excellent Tutorial Video On Hooking Up 2 Different Microphones To Your Go Pro Hero 10! Thank You.
Very helpful! Thank you for the comparison!
Very good explanation. Thanks!!!
Wow I didn't even know about the ulanzi until this video! So easy to understand! Thanks!! Will use this for my trip to Peru and Machu Picchu!
Very good presentation with a clear and concise content.
Yess....
Thanks for information for the microphone works pretty good I like the first one much easier and better sounds clear also ☺️
These cams are amazing. I just bought a Hero 10 Black today. I also have a Hero black 7 and 8
The best video iv seen explaining about external microphones 👌
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed
Thank you very well made needed this info 💯
Thank you! Very well explained video - and not too long!
Thanks for this video! So helpful!
This is so damn perfectly explained 👍
Very informative, thank you!
This was brilliant. Thank you.
Solved my problem! Thanks so much, great video!
Love your vids man.
Super helpful - thanks!
Thank you. I need the media mod to connect the wireless go 2 hehe. Thanks for showing
I was planning on getting the Rode Go 2 but then I heard DJI's releasing a wireless mic too so now I'm holding off a bit and see which is better! DJI's charging pod is tempting though!
Enjoyed yes perfect products from GoPro need to buy thank you
Awesome video and very informative.Just bought the new gopro 10 and i am looking for a solution to put my new wireless mics on it!!
Thanks For This Video. Great Info.
I have old Hero 4 silver, I just use the small USB in with an adapter to mini TRS to XLR.
Works great!..
Well done video.
Any recommendations on settings in the GoPro with a mic module Standard/Standard+ when using the WIreless Go II system? What receiver gain settings do you recommend for the Wireless Go II with the GoPro setup?
Thank you very helpful
Helped me to get it set up correctly first time every time with my Rode wireless. Thanks
Hello and thanks for your vids. Just subscribed. Was wondering if I'm able to find a third party mic adapter or do I have to use the ~$50 GoPro version?
Another great video. I just may have to upgrade to the GoPro 10😀😎
Great information, thank you sir.
Hi! Great video. Speaking of microphones, how about the Deity D4 duo? Is compatible with the GoPros 9 and 10? Thanks.
Great video! I picked up the Hohem iSteady Pro 4 Gimbal after watching your video but can you use the media mod with an external mic AND the gimbal?
Thank you this video helped.
I love how you took flossy J's background idea with the gray platform and a plant in the corner. Creativity is not limitless.
Who? It’s called a desk. Everyone who films at a desk looks exactly the same
Legend I've been wanting to connect a wireless one not a big mount think you've answered my question! With the rode option cheers
Thx, great info.
Watching this video has answered all my questions. I cant tell you how many circles I’ve been on to get here. Thank you. What I’ve discovered because you explained hoe this 3.5mm mic adapter works is I didn’t realise you need to tell your camera to recognise which one your using? Powered or not? I didn’t get that. Any how now i have I’ve connected some Roland 3.5mm jack Binuaral mics and now am getting 3 D sound on this incredible Hero 10… 👍🏽
What would be the best approach to film outdoor sports (climbing, skiing)? Is the Media Mod enough by itself?
Thanks! This is helpful
This is the exact question I had!
Great video!
Thanks for the info
Good info!! I just started doing videos and I am a noob with sound and stuff. :) Btw I just got the Rode mic's that you have in this video! :) They work like a charm on my phone, but not on the GoPro I have. So this video was a good learning of how thing work! :)
Thank you!!
Good information Thank you
thanks for this video.. great advice.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video... But im now on my 3rd Media Mod for my Hero 9 since Nov last year as the port for which the jack goes into becomes loose so it wont hold the jack. They have always been looked after, never dropped or anything like that. Think it must just be very poorly made.
Gopro keeps sending me new ones for free so thats 'ok' but think after Christmas im going to get a Tascam DR-10L. I know this will mean ill have to sync my audio but its a minute job if that so no bother to me and I need something reliable.
Fed up if having to use my gopro audio with wind slayers on with my videos inbetween media mods lol.
I know a few people who use the adapter with a Ulanzi cage and dont seem to have any issues, apart from being 3 times as annoying when the need to swap a a battery occurs. But im just fed up of them now.
Thanks for the great review and comparison in any case 👍🏻👍🏻😃
Video is almost a year but this helps me a lot. I hope whoever made this video is doing good. Keep safe
If you don't set your Rode Wireless mic to "powered mic" then when using quikcapture there will be an added wait time +3 seconds after the camera turns on to record because the camera refreshes itself to "powered mic" since you are starting it up with "standard mic". This is important to know because if you are using quikcapture and there is a 3 second delay after the beeps, then it'll cut off every start of audio you want to record. If powered mic is the setting with wireless go mic then there will be at most only 1 second delay after pressing quikcapture (the camera will not need to refresh itself from standard mic to powered mic, and thus it won't have a 3 second delay)
Some great information thanks for sharing
quick question for the pro! when using an external mic do you recommend turning the wind reduction setting off, auto, or on?
Non BS information - thanks! Wish I had seen that earlier!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi very helpful video. You can buy new ulanzi g9 4 case for GoPro 10, it fits better. Does Rode mic can be added to the Ulanzi case as on Media mod at the cold shoe or not? I want to use wireless mic, thank you!
Nice review! Pls review the DJI mic as well. It looks interesting!
Very useful Review
Nice !
Thx for the Video
Thank you for the video. Could the Rode double as a communications devise for a motorcycle rider and passenger?
Thank you very good video. Do you know, the usb-c port supports usb-c mic receivers like Saramonic Blink 500 B6? Its receiver has usb-c on it.
Damn. I didn’t know Ulanzi made a case for the GoPro 10! I ended up buying the media mod but I think I will still get the case because I still have the mic adapter and a seramonic mic that I can rotate front to back. Not able to use the seramonic with the media mod because the input jack for the mic is facing the back of the GoPro. Using the mic adapter, the plug is in the side.
u answered my questions thanks
Hi, great video! I have a question, will these ways work the same with the Hero 9 Black? Thanks You!
Thank you for the video! With the mic adapter, can you charge the gopro continuously and use an external mic plugged in? I need to charge the gopro as each youtube live session I do is 7-8 hours long (and on a kayak)
Yes indeed you can feed constant power when using either the microphone adapter or the media mod. Both have a USBC port for attaching power banks
Great video thanks for making it. I'm looking at a set up for my kayak and long durations of filming without having to switch batteries. Do you know if the Pro 3.5 mm mic adapter allows you to use the USB-C Power connector to leave your GoPro plugged into an external battery bank while using a BT Mic?
Yes, indeed it has the auxiliary USB-C port for power. Well, your got your microphone plug in.
For the wireless unit I see there’s an option for a plug in mic, can this be set up to be a combo input. Say have it record vocals and input a 3.5mm input to record an audio source at the same time?
Good video. Saved
good video - i use the media mod
Thanks dude 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am thinking of getting a gopro10 for my youtube vids too. I like that shotgun mic. Hello from the Philippines
I thought there was an upgrade coming out in nov for the hero 9/10 to allow other mics?
Great video
Thanks!
Thank you very much
Just what i wanted. Thanks its helped.
I have the hero10 plus media mod and the wireless go mic - now do i set it to powered mic or powered mic + ?
i just cant find any info.
Don’t worry it just powered mic.
nice and direct. thanks
Glad you liked it!
Great. Thank you.
I have a problem with the sound more on the left side not in stereo is there a way to correct it? I also edit with iMove desk top. Maybe there is a fix in editing?
So I’m looking in to all this stuff. Preferably the GoPro 10. Now I’m gonna be riding an electric scooter. Probably going 40-60mph I’m trying to figure out the best set up for me bc I’m gonna have a lot of wind. Also I don’t have a full helmet I have a half helmet but I do wear a face mask. If you could give me any advice on what set up you think would be best for me and that way I don’t get just wind recording. Thanks
Hope you may help. I wonder whether it is possible (or not) to connect Zoom H6 (with XLR 48 powered condenser mic) to a GoPro (9-10) via this adapter, like, for example, H6 line out -> 3,5 mm Jack (male/male) -> Adapter -> GoPro 9/10 to have better audio quality recording?
What kind of port is that lil port underneath the battery of the Gopro, the same hole you plugged the sound adapter in? is it a USB-C? if not what is it? can one plug his USB mic into that port? or better yet, if I have a wireless mic with a lightning male end, is there a workaround to make this compatible with a Gopro 10? maybe like an adapter or something.
usful video nice
nice info
I just recently bought the media mod for my hero 8 black
Can you add a cage over the media mod like one of the small rig ones ?
Do you think the Rode Wireless Go II used with it's lavalier mic and the GoPro Hero 10 would make a good motovlogging setup? I was thinking attaching the Rode transmitter to the back of my helmet, running the wire through the inside of my helmet so the mic would be near my mouth, then attaching the receiver to the camera which would be mounted on my helmet or any other place on my bike. Thoughts? Currently, I use the Hero 7, Ulanzi housing, GoPro mic adapter and standard lav mic, but this set up has the wire from the lav mic running along the outside of my helmet.
I just broke my Media Mod using it to motovlog. The mic jack is very fragile. After only to short runs around 100 kph I noticed a lot of popping sounds in the footage, that I now know were due to the bad contact in the mic jack caused by the wind making the small amount of unsecured mic cable vubrate violently. Now when I tap the mic plug when in the jack it almost peggs the audio meter. As well, both builtin Mod mics are no longer working. Having a cable from your Wireless go to the Media mod probably wont last long based on my experience. The lav mic cable is much thinner and next time I will take more time to secure it to make sure it does not damage the mic jack. 100$ dollar lesson learned. If I break another media mod I will try the old style adapter.
Good luck
Is the first option available for the GoPro Hero Black 8? Or can you add a usb-c to connect to a 3.5mm adapter?
With the trrs wire 1 side has 3 rings the other side has 2 rings my question is which 1 plugs into the external mic ive added to my gopro and which 1 plugs in to gopro adapter if u can let me know i would appriciate that thank you so much.
Can you please suggest best ND filters which we can use with ulanzi case because i see 52mm nd filters not suitable for ultrawide and changing the whole lens filter is kinda more time consuming, suggest something for that motovlogging with ultra smooth video.
Thanks i chose the method without media mod. For so many reasons im too lazy to write :D
