      I just bought a Rode Wireless go and absolutely love the sound quality and versatility the setup gives me. The rub I have is with GoPro, in short, their product information interoperability transparency is horrible. Trying to get them to confirm my wireless go would work with the Hero 9 black I just ordered was an ordeal to say the least. Just tonight I figured out I needed the media mod in order to get my mic to work, would have been very helpful if they were able to provide that info last week. The plus I'll take away is that I am much more in tune with both the Wireless Go and the Hero 9 and will tell everyone that asks that Rode is absolutely the way to go for their microphone needs,

    • @Gemini_Connect
      @Gemini_Connect  4 роки тому +1

      @@YellowJacketGarage Totally understand the frustration with GoPro. I've found the live chat on and the forum on their website to be pretty helpful in the past, but definitely a dig for info most of the time. For the Rode Wireless Go (or any external mic), you'll need either the Media Mod OR the GoPro Mic Adapter, although the adapter won't be compatible with the Hero 9 until firmware update v1.5 comes out in November. Also remember to set the GoPro to Powered Mic, and you'll be golden!

    Is it just me or is the media mod way worse than the original built in microphone ?! 😳🤷🏼‍♂️

  • @kentao4
    @kentao4 4 роки тому +86

    I’m starting to think the media mod would be better without the mic and simply providing the connections for external mics.

    • @Gemini_Connect
      @Gemini_Connect  4 роки тому +16

      The best solution IMO is just to include the mic jack in the camera and add a cold shoe mount to the camera or the camera case, lol. But if they insist on keeping this Media Mod, I suppose it's better to have the extra mics included rather than not...I'm sure that justifies (to GoPro, anyway) the high cost of the mod.

    "The more money you spend in a microphone...the better it should be." (More or less what you said)
    This was good to watch. I've been strongly leaning towards the GoPro 9 model as my next camera. (The last has been my Samsung Galaxy 10A model I bought in April, 2017; actual last camera bought: Nikon 3300 " Coolpix" series back in
    , what? 2009, maybe?) As one can see...I'm not one to use the cameras and regularly update like some do being more serious in the art of video/photography.
    I've been wondering if the GoPro 9 would take an external plug-in mike. Now I know...after looking at a few reviews of the camera. The second one reviewed (?) Seem to have the best for front and behind camera audio. I need to check into that one.

    This is really helpful, thanks! I think the Rode Wireless wins for quality, but the Media Mod mic wins for convenience, apart from having to keep changing the setting from back to front. In that case, the Rode might actually beat it for convenience as long as you remember to switch all three things on and off. Good for certain shooting sessions where you're gonna do all your filming in one go. It's a pain for vlogging when you do loads of very short shots all over the place on the go.

    I thought the media mod mic and Rode wireless go sounded the best. Which surprised me as I've seen other videos of media mod and didn't sound as good. I was also surprised the Edutige ETM-001 didn't sound good. I use one with my 7 and 8 HB and it sounds great. I use it with the mic adapter / not media mod. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

    • @Gemini_Connect
      @Gemini_Connect  4 роки тому

      The Media Mod mics on the Hero 9 version are much improved from the Hero 8 Media Mod. I also used the Edutige with the Hero 7 + mic adapter and it worked really well for us. I think it works less well with the Media Mod because the mic faces backwards rather than to the side like it does on the mic adapter.

    The wireless Go was best when pointed up at your mouth, but for most of the test it was pointed out to sea - even so, I’d say it was the mic that made the biggest difference.

    I do production sound professionally and honestly in this scenario the internal microphone was better quality (actually had a low end) than all the mics except the Joby imo which really surprises me. Based on this video, only situation I would get an external microphone for the GoPro 9 is for extremely windy days that would call for a dead cat or blimp, or if the subject is speaking too far for the internal mic to pic up, I'd plug a Rode SmartLav+ lavalier microphone into my phone's headphone jack and sync the files later. Thanks for this video comparison! Tip for syncing: describe shot briefly and clap your hands once in camera view.

    I have the rode video micro and GoPro hero 9. I have the problem of the windscreen being in the frame. I ordered the hot shoe extensions in the description to try to fix the problem but they don’t fit. The thread on the bottom of the video micro is WAY bigger. I’ll return them. What extension do you recommend to solve the issue? The Ulanzi 3 way one looks like it should work.

      Ah yes. Rode has strangely wide threads on the bottom of their mics. You need another adapter piece + the hot shoe extension -

    I think the Media Mod sounded the clearest, as far as your voice. Also it by far picked up the water sounds the best & clearest, and also it seemed to have the least amount of rumbly ambient noise. AND - when you turned the mic away, the level dropped slightly but nothing like all the other mics.

    Awsome review my choice would be the Mod its sounds good all the way around and the functionality serves it purpose. If you buy it with your subscription it's a lot cheaper too. The rode does sound nice as well but its just a little too Bigfork my taste. Keep up the great work 👍

    another cool option I use that requires a little bit more work is syncing audio from an external mic with the internal mic audio. I use a zoom h1 with / without a rode lav. Easily packed away inside of a shirt/jacket and backpack or pocket for the zoom h1

    Nice comparison video. I've used the media mod mic a few times, I find the audio isn't that bad. But I just picked up a Saramonic Blink500 B2 Lav kit so I will likely be using that from now on when I am out filming vlog type content.
