Larry Holmes was the next great boxer that was keft out of this list. How can you possibly not have him in this group. One of the greatest power jabs by any boxer. Won 21 straight title fights with 20 of then defending all comers. He beat Spinks in the rematch, but it was Spinks who was gifted the win by split decision. Spinks then was stopped in 91 seconds by Tyson. Tyson then gave the retired Holmes a crack at the belt, and even though he was stopped in the 4th round he lasted longer than Spinks did. He also went the distance against a prime Evander Holyfield trying to become champ again at 43 year's old. He then worked his way back to a title fight at 45years old against the 30 year old Oliver McCall who just knocked out Lennox Lewis. Holmes lost by a close decision. No, Ali had a style for the era that's it. What else's did he do Nothing it had been done before and after just the 1st on camera and the 1st black guy and everybody else followed suit. But nothing new to fighters.
@@scott4766 he didn't said that ali invented his fighting style. He just said that he had every tool a fighter can have which I disagree with since Ali didn't have 1 hit ko power and good mix up combinations since he rarely goes to body In fact ali only threw a handful of body shots in his entire career Edit: if I were to call fighter who had everything then it would be robinson or lightweight duran Both of em had it all speed, power, chin, infighting, feints, etc..
He did not have a knockout punch. That is the only major thing about Muhammad Ali that was lacking. The only man people have consistently ranked ahead of him on all time lists is Joe Louis Barrow. It is because Joe Louis Barrow had every tool in the book. Foot speed may have been a little bit lacking, but when he caught you, there was no getting away
One thing that's hugely apparent with a bunch of boxers through the years starting with JACK DEMPSEY.. YOU CAN'T BE INACTIVE FOR THREE YEARS WITHOUT FIGHTS AND EXPECT TO REMAIN CHAMPION.. when he fought Gene Tunney he had a three-year layoff.. and then later Fighters like MUHAMMAD ALI, MIKE TYSON, WHO ALSO HAD OVER THREE YEAR OFFS FOR DIFFERENT REASONS LEARNED THE SAME LESSON!!
100% true, Dempsey was never the same after that, his footwork much slower, reflexes groggy, head and body movement more limited.... No doubt the Dempsey of 1919 would have made mincemeat of the great Tunney.
Most excellent, I watched from start to finish! It was so full of rare shots that I've been trying to find on YT for a long time! I'm talking about the stare down between Liston and Ali while getting instructions! Things I didn't really know about Carnera and others that were swindled out of money! Some ended so bad it's hard to fathom even though I'm sure I read it somewhere! Great footage! I haven't followed boxing for a long time so this was time well spent watching this! Good job!
Jou Louis, absolute legend, he broke walls down, he made a difference in all the right ways, legend. Pains me how Jou was treat, robbed, man was honourable, damn shame.

( Well, for sure i am not very talented, i am a average boxer) i would die for sure if i fight 25 rounds!
Excellent documentary. Great to look back at greats like Dempsey, Tunney, Louis, Walcott, Marciano, Frazier. Ali may have been the greatest but his histrionics put an end to the loftier side of boxing, the side of sportsmanship and respect for your opponent. At any rate, thank you for posting this remarkable doc.
Sportsmanship, loftier, respect gtfoh ,Dempsey Sullivan they all talked smack except Louis because he wasn't allowed, Ali just used the media better and only Frazier got in his feelings
Most people don't know what it's like to get in a RING and get into a real fight a real situation where another man is literally trying to hurt you. And hurt you real real bad, trying to knock your head off or trying to destroy your internal organs, it's a most epic display for survival, yeah for sure it is something. It's tough to describe, God Bless all of these CHAMPIONS
He held the WBC title for 5 years, never winning the WBA belt. There is another entire lineage of champions that existed during his run that never crossed paths until Tyson unified the belts.
There's a possibility that this documentary was completed after Ali-Foreman, then reissued by slapping on Ali-Frazier III (which they cover in 60 seconds) and then adding the Tyson years.
Norfolk Boy He was never an undisputed champion. I think he only hold the WBC title and there was not a unified/undisputed champion. King of the Ring are only the “The Undisputed Champions”. This could be the reason that era was not mentioned. I hope that answered your question.
Thank you to those responsible for this excellent Boxing documentary. At age 54, it was the best of it's kind, I have ever seen. Covered so much boxing history, in such minimal amount of time. Question: Why did Jack Dempsey never fight Jack Johnson? Both popular at the same time. The fight would have broke records at the box office. So, why didnt it happen?
Yeah I think Jack Johnson was retired by the time Dempsey was fighting for championships. Perhaps the bravest thing Jack J did was marry a white women. When he retired he opened a desegregated Restaurant. I would put him right up there with some of the better know civil rights activists.
Foreman also said something similar, while looking for a title shot, thank you Micheal Moorer. and after Leon Spink's personal life turned into chaos, it wasn't hard to see Tyson taking his eye off the bull's eye.
The orchid man was a nickname of the soldiers who lit the artillery cannons and didnt let it extinguish thru the entire battle... It had nothing to do with flowers...
When I was 19, I worked at a beachside Eckerd Drugs in Florida. I got to know an older gentleman named Vinny. We used to always talk boxing. He told me knew Rocky Marciano, he told me he used to train with a 300lbs weight jacket. Can you imagine?
@Shabzino After 1923 especially he got really famous in the movies and didn't fight again until 1926 definitely lost motivation. Was a true beast on the way up.
Muhammad Ali would have broke Joe Louis record for title defenses if he didn't get banned. Between 67-70 Frazier was still fresh from the Olympics & nobody was there to even challenge him.
I highly doubt that. If you give Louis his years back as well to be fair, he’s probably got 30 defenses under his belt. Ali got up to what 7 or 9 before exile? I could see him getting to maybe half Louis’ hypothetical number before Frazier beats him.
@@adrianovasconcelos2739 there was one problem. Larry Holmes had nobody to fight. He didn't have a Joe Frazier. That was his major problem. He actually cleaned out his division of everybody worth fighting. Jerry Cooney was a fantastic fighter in his young days, he knocked out Kenny Norton in one round.
I like how the fixed the speed on the really old fights. When you see it in the old motion, it looks too fast and cartoonish. You get to really see the skill.
57th min. onwards -Liston vs. Alì - 1965 - DAMN! - I LOVED that Alì's "dance! :D :D It was one of the very best fights from Alì I've ever seen, which - paradoxically - is A PITY...because I actually kinda liked Liston! :) He has always been considered just a "thug" & very little more - he was way more! Watching Louis getting beaten so bad by Marciano makes me sick - Joe Louis was a national hero and possibly the greatest heavy weight champion of all time but the crooks who ran boxing and the IRS left him broke at the end of his long and glorious career, forcing him to try a comeback against the much younger Marciano - and the outcome was no surprise. Leave it to the IRS.
Louis was Marcianos Hero, he grew up watching Louis being the champion. Its well known Rocky broke his own heart in that fight and wept in the dressing room of Louis while the Doctors attended to Louis.
great video, only problem is no mention of Holmes who held HW title the 2nd longest out of any hw.I think he more than deserves to be mentioned in this video.I believe Holmes is the 3rd greatest HW,only behind Ali @ Louis.
Yes, Holmes really isn't afforded his due. An outstanding heavyweight with great recuperative powers, he possessed one of the top 3 jabs in the history of the division.
I also thought Holmes was short shifted by such a fleeting mention. The biggest oversight in this video though was the lack of any mention of Evander Holyfield who I personally believe is in the Top 5 heavyweight champions. Overall though it's a great documentary with really good restored film footage & for the most part unbiased commentary🤔
Marciano trained like a madman. He would go to the pool in Brockton YMCA, stand in neck deep water and throw uppercuts for hours. Very humble guy Rocky. Everyone loved him. There were a lot of great fighters, but only one 49-0. Rocco Marchegiano
"George Foreman, Mike Tyson" The way in which the world of boxing just overlooks Larry Holmes like he didn't exist is regrettable. I get it, but it's still sad.
The older people that got me in to boxing didn't like him for the same reason I don't. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way with how he spoke about his victory over Ali. Even then they all knew Ali was not right and he was already taking medication for his Parkinson's syndrome before that fight. His crowning and most bragged about achievement was beating someone late in their years for boxing with brain damage. Maybe if he would have been more humble about it most people wouldn't think he is an ass.
@billy bob Holmes beat Earnie Shavers, Gerry Cooney, Tim Witherspoon. James Bonecrusher Smith, Leon Spinks. Trevor Berbick, Carl William's, Mike Weaver, Ray Mercer, Ken Norton, etc. He beat many top level boxers who were young, in and around their primes, when Larry beat them. He had a fantastic career. Witherspoon, L. Spinks, Berbick, Smith, Weaver, Norton, all held one of the heavyweight world championships at one time. Larry is the best heavyweight since Ali left boxing, IMO. Better than Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Klitschko brothers, etc. Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali are the two best heavyweight champions in boxing history. After them, we can talk about Holmes, Foreman, Marciano, Frazier, Johnson, Dempsey, Holyfield, Tyson, Lewis , Liston, etc.
Joe "The Brown Bomber" Louis is definitely in my top 3 favorite fighters of all time. His title defenses are legendary! I love the history of the early 20th century boxing. What a fascinating time in general! Great documentary 💪👍
I really think Louis is the greatest of all time. But he didn't know how to defend against a swarmer like Rocky. If he was younger when he faced him, he probably could have had a rematch and show that he learned how to take him, like he did with Snelling. Even so, Louis is my favourite boxer.
John Arthur "Jack" Johnson is the greatest of all time. 96 fights to prove himself as the greatest. Cities changed laws because of the Galveston Giant. 🇵🇷🤘🏾
Holmes? That's a joke, he never fought any of the greats when they were in their prime. Right place at the right time, there was no really good competition between 78' and 85'. Ken Norton was almost 36 when Holmes barely beat him for the WBC crown. Then look who he fought after that who had any name recognition: Shavers, Weaver, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney and a senior citizen Ali. Hell, he barely got the decision against Butterbean. Not even in the class of Ali, Frasier, Tyson or even Evander when they were in their prime.
@@illahknigge2567 Butterbean is a legend in his own way. I'll tell you this: He was probably just about impossible to knock out. Check out the MMA bout where a guy elbowed Butterbean in the head -- and then had to quit. He broke his arm. He later said that Butterbean had a head like a bowling ball.
Thank you so so much for your making of this recorded history of the world 🌎 class life of pure gifted and often overlooked talent and performance’s of the LEGENDARY MEN WHO MADE THE SWEET SCIENCE OF BOXING A HOUSE HOLD FOLLOWED SPORT TO RIVAL FOOTBALL ⚽️
Can't believe they just skipped over Larry Holmes. Didn't he have the second most title defenses second only to joe Lewis? Also he was Ali's sparring partner.
"Kings can benefit from their conquests" All of them were kings of the ring, despite how their lives turned out they will always have their legacy, their mark on this world, they will always live on :)
so true i hope these people are proud of their achievements, defeat can create the illusion that you are a loser, but being a pro boxer takes courage, endurance and pure passion, many people dont know how hard even one round can be, pushing your body to the limits of its ability, these people should stay proud, boxing is the hardest and most heroic sport there is
cludo88 We must have respect for ANY man who steps in that ring ppl think it's easy you're so right brother it is the hardest sport, I believe, out there. Ppl can say what they want about Mayweather but, he is one of the hardest working boxers ever whether running his mouth to sell the fight or training it's a hard business.
Rocky was smaller though and won on pure heart. He is the GOAT. I don’t think most of champions in this film would have done as well as Rocky, if they were his size. That’s all.
He was just a transition between two boxers who revolutionized this sport. There were other champions in the first half of the eighties: Pinklon Thomas,Greg Page,Coetzie, Witherspoon..Tyson was the real Ali successor because he unified this category's title.

Ali had every tool a fighter can have. The GOAT,and I'm a Frazier fan
No, Ali had a style for the era that's it. What else's did he do Nothing it had been done before and after just the 1st on camera and the 1st black guy and everybody else followed suit. But nothing new to fighters.
@@scott4766 he didn't said that ali invented his fighting style. He just said that he had every tool a fighter can have which I disagree with since Ali didn't have 1 hit ko power and good mix up combinations since he rarely goes to body
In fact ali only threw a handful of body shots in his entire career
Edit: if I were to call fighter who had everything then it would be robinson or lightweight duran
Both of em had it all speed, power, chin, infighting, feints, etc..

Absolutely love this documentary. Incredible footage, music and presentation.

Hi
Thank you very much for taking us back to the history of Great Heavyweights! No one is greater then Tunney & Dempsey as old age friends!
Good job!

Excellent documentary. Great to look back at greats like Dempsey, Tunney, Louis, Walcott, Marciano, Frazier. He held the WBC title for 5 years, never winning the WBA belt. There is another entire lineage of champions that existed during his run that never crossed paths until Tyson unified the belts.
How could they miss out Larry Holmes he was a great champion.
There's a possibility that this documentary was completed after Ali-Foreman, then reissued by slapping on Ali-Frazier III (which they cover in 60 seconds) and then adding the Tyson years.
Norfolk Boy
He was never an undisputed champion.

Jack lost the championship 5 years before dempsey got it, and by that time was a bit past his peak

I highly doubt that. If you give Louis his years back as well to be fair, he’s probably got 30 defenses under his belt. Ali got up to what 7 or 9 before exile? I could see him getting to maybe half Louis’ hypothetical number before Frazier beats him.
What a great documentary. Thanks for the upload.

Many have tried emulating Rockys style but nobody ever did successfully. Remarkable champ and one of a kind
"George Foreman, Mike Tyson" The way in which the world of boxing just overlooks Larry Holmes like he didn't exist is regrettable. I get it, but it's still sad.
You’re right. He didn’t get his due.
They also ignored Ken Norton
They also skipped Jim Jeffries, Jack Johnson, Gene Tunney. All ring greats. And mentioned Carnera....

I really think Louis is the greatest of all time. But he didn't know how to defend against a swarmer like Rocky. If he was younger when he faced him, he probably could have had a rematch and show that he learned how to take him, like he did with Snelling. Even so, Louis is my favourite boxer.
