    Congratulations on your new Rolex. I bought my first one 30 years ago and I remember how excited I was. Enjoy it and remember it's just a physical possession. There are some things in life worth a lot more. Anyway, enjoy it.

      I like the sentiment but I agree with the above comment. It's Rolex, not Phillipe Dufour. One person didn't sit there and create it from scratch.

    I definitely don’t think they lie about not having it to create demand. Many Rolex watches are relatively rare to find when just walking in to stores.
    Datejusts and Daydates are everywhere, but Explorer, Submariner with and without date? Minority of stores have them in, at least where I’m located.

    I can approve the kindness of the workers in their store... I went with my friend in the store and they first asked would you like to try something, at the time we were looking at the tag aquaracer chrono and my friend chose him. Then we sat and the girl with gloves put it on our hands literally and the other girl asked us would you like to have a coffe lmao, it was kind of unsuspected i was like confused and later we tried new ceramic gmt, and deepsea sea dweller. We even got their magazine it was awesome experiencee!! Btw she noticed we are into watches so we chat in there for like half an hour. I the other store we were like 45 mins talking to the owner.. he is 26 yrs and is certified watchmaker for Breitling and Rolex!! He even opened his navitimer and showed us the movement... insanee!!! I will remember that day forever... and ofc when i get in again and actually buy a Tudor or luckily Subby...

      You're not that bright are you?

    • @alexcooper6265

      If you're reselling something it's used. If he can't pick up a used one that cheap then how would his lose so much value?
      Rolex value doesn't go down by a third overnight anyway, that's ridiculous. Some models even increase in value.
      I went to University in England. I've heard some bad things about American schooling (assuming by your phrasing) and you're confirming them.

    • @alexcooper6265
      @alexcooper6265 6 років тому

      I didn't say it was a good investment, I pointed out it doesn't lose a third of its value overnight. Now you're agreeing they keep their value? Lol.

    Congratulations! Such a classic and nice watch. It's always nice to see someone enjoying their first Rolex.
    I have saved up the cash, but I don't know if I want to buy the Submariner, the OP 34mm olive green dial or a datejust. The watch will mark my engineering degree and will be a lifetime keeper. The OP 34mm is stunning!!! Probably the most underrated Rolex out there. Almost half the price and got the same movement as the Submariner no date.
    I've been thinking for almost 3 months and have not pulled the trigger yet xD

This is a guy who has saved up, worked so hard, and bought the watch he always wanted instead of these rich kids that buy one for a flexing high viewing UA-cam video. You are on cloud9 in this video and that's nice to see. I have seen your other videos where you speak of owning a Rolex something you aspire to. We have something in common that we both have had a 39mm Steiny. For me it's part of a collection where I wanted a diver on a nice bracelet, one on a NATO (blueray) and one on a rubber strap (Seiko) plus a nice white face dress watch (sarb035). All affordable watches that put a smile on my face and no compromises made elsewhere. What I would really like to know (and I'm sure it's in the pipeline) is, how you feel in say a year from now. I know someone who bought a Rolex thinking he would be respected more. The reality is 99 out of 100 people don't care about watches and nobody noticed his watch or were interested in it. He sold it within 12 months!

    After 4 yrs I can say this:
    You did a very good thing. You can wear that model any where, any time for the rest of your life.
    The brushed surfaces make dings and scratches hard to see, and the bezel is extremely hard to damage.
    Finally, when the weather in Toronto gets warm and sticky you can make micro adjustments to the Glidelock clasp. It’s incredible for that.
    Finally, don’t wear it lifting weights, playing golf, or cleaning out your garage. It’s a $10k watch after all. Get yourself a $100 Seiko 5 for that stuff.

    Congrats on the watch! I tripped out when I saw you're in Toronto as well- I hardly ever see people sporting Rolexes here. I'm taking delivery of my first Rolex/'real' watch this month, the 50th anniversary Sea-Dweller, and am a bit nervous about the idea of wearing it out in public here. Most of the time I've been with a friend who's got a Rolex people always have to comment on it and I can't stand such attention. I didn't decide on it because it's a status symbol or anything like that, I've just been obsessed with horology since I was a kid and genuinely like their products. The brand has an especially negative stigma in my age group (I'm 28), another reason why I won't be boasting it much... All that said, I'm incredibly anxious to finally get it and start a collection. I'm on the list for the Daytona (like everyone else) and am hoping to get a GMT II eventually.

  • @sambirtwistle

    dude i'm the same. cars don't mean shit. They will be worth zero in time, where you rolex (depending on how long you hold on to it) could demand the same if not more than you paid. I purchased an 80's gmt from royal (same shop) for just under two grand and traded it in for over 4 about 5 years ago. My local dealer sold it for around 6 grand. I now own an 39mm explorer. Always loved the original explorer, but at 36mm was just too small. The new bracelets and improved springs and shock system are a vast improvement over previoius models. I am nostalgic, but can't go against what i view improved value.

    I got my first Rolex last summer. Like yourself (I read a comment below), I thought the Datejust would do it for me, though it wasn't until I went to the boutique and tried a bunch of watches on that I could FEEL how that was the wrong decision. 36mm, though a classic size, struck me, a young bearded man like yourself, as too small. Plus, my other (and first) nice watch, a 42mm Omega Speedmaster Professional, was one I wore for just shy of ten years...so it would have seemed small coming off of that one. The 41mm Datejust II was out because not only was it not a certifiable "classic" yet, but...it was just a hair too big. And honestly, I didn't care for the date / cyclops window. I really like symmetry, and to me, it stood in the way of that.
    I love the Submariner and its history, but...I can't get behind its current incarnation. That watch's lugs used to taper elegantly like a gothic cathedral's buttresses, whereas now they're cold and fortress-like. Way too boxy for me. Also, minus the watchmaker in the boutique who was wearing a Tudor Black Bay, literally all of the sales staff (we're talking five, six of them) wore the black Submariner. Except the owner - he had a solid yellow gold one, which struck me as rather garish. I mean, if you have the money to drop close to $40,000 on a watch, don't buy a showpiece like that. That's a a twenty year-old NBA player's watch, not that of a 70 year-old, who will some day in the near future be sealed up in his tomb with it. But hey, maybe he's got a drawer full of vintage Patek Phillipe, I don't know.
    No, the oyster case is classic, and I like me a three-hander: Air King...Explorer...too entry-level. Too plain Jane. I found myself gravitating towards a watch that had been in my head for a year or two: the blue Milgauss. I still want a Submariner, but...it's going to have to be vintage. A 5513, at a minimum. Not only for the looks, but the equity.

  • @sunset-eq7rf
    @sunset-eq7rf 6 років тому

    You are an example that if you really want something it is attainable and possible by just sacrificing in other areas. I have been to that Yorkville boutique to browse. Are these stores willing to negotiate or are these Rolex's selling themselves. I have been to Omega boutique's where they are willing to discount the price to make the sale. I was wondering if that exists at the Rolex stores. Enjoy wearing your watch. It is a beautiful timepiece.

      Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. I had a similar experience. I believe that they did not have a Submariner when I came in and they really tried to sell me on other watches. I was even slightly tempted by an Explorer. however, I told them that this was not an impulse buy, that I had wanted a Submariner for many years and it was either that or nothing.

    Excellent! I’ve never been bothered with getting a Subby, since I got into watches, but I am soooo chuffed for you, your face says it all. Sacrifices all the way in order to get your true grail, well done you. I hate to admit it, after watching that video, I am now tempted to do the same!

    It's a good choice but I really believe it is a big delay of your accumulation of wealth... if you're saying that you are not in an era of financial freedom, i believe you should have better invested that 8 grand on some other kind of asset that would actually give you some kind of monetary return e.g. stocks. Either way this is my humble opinion and should not make you feel bad for your decision, i hope you really enjoy that beast of a watch you got there

      a sub in this era is like an asset at the bank resale value is secure

      I don't think anyone is under the impression buying a Rolex is the best financial decision you can make. You can save up for something material while also putting money away in savings though.
      If his kids are going hungry or he can't pay rent because he made this purchase then it's a bad choice. If not, and he can afford it, then why not?

    Loving the vlog! Totally understand the fact that you couldn't film the 'experience'. It's a great experience though, EARNING your first Rolex =). I recently, had the opportunity to visit their office off of Madison. Enjoy it, for the movement, will out live all of us, lol.
