The only way Rolex will learn its lesson is for customers to quit Rolex as a brand. You can go into other brand boutiques (with a few exceptions), or better yet and AD, and walk out with any watch you want. There was a time when Rolex did not play this game of wait lists and preferential treatment.

Doesn't matter whether it's the AD or a boutique, they are both Rolex's customer. Rolex let's them roam wild and unrestricted and do what they want and conduct business how they want. This results in a sleazy car salesman like experience for the buyer. That was his whole point. Regardless of what Rolex customer's store you go to (I.e. A lot of ADs have their own criteria for who they sell watches to that can vary from store to store. My local ad got me a black sub within 4 months of me asking. They don’t sell to anyone who lives farther than 100 miles from the store and you have to walk in in order to be added to any list. That way they can insure that local people in the community are the ones getting watches.

I just purchased my first Rolex, the submariner, James Cameron. I was a first time buyer and I’ve never been in a Rolex store before. There were watch models available, but not the particular model that I was interested in. I waited about three months and got a call from my AD that the Watch I was interested was available. I made the appointment and went into the store and purchased the watch. I understand there have been inventory challenges and AD’s perhaps reserve watches for their regular customers, I have never heard of any friends, who had difficulty purchasing a Rolex from a local authorized dealer.

There's something very sketchy about this story. It just doesn't add up. The salesperson has not one, not two, but three of the most desirable watches, lies to you about it, waits until you leave the store, hangs out on the sidewalk somehow knowing you'll come back, brings you back inside, and sells you a watch. Sounds like the watch equivalent of those Penthouse Forum stories.

The gold sub and explorer 36 are very obtainable. The sub can be found below retail on the secondary market and the explorer 36 is selling at retail. The ADs know this, their poor behaviour basically dictates the market. Now, the black explorer 2 is a bit special for a walk in for sure, but not crazy crazy. Walk in and get a Pepsi, deytona or even a no date sub and I’d be impressed.

Actually it is not sketchy. The dealer was doing a "background check" of sorts before deciding if they wanted to sell a Rolex to this guy. This is the way today's entitled AD's do their business, and why many of us do not bother to go into the store anymore. Who needs to be treated like a pissant? The good news is that demand for Rolex is ebbing, Rolex is ramping production and can't use Covid to pause production. Just wait for the Rolex you want to fall at or near retail and go to a trusted grey market dealer to get a real deal. Unfortunately nobody has told the AD's that the Pandemic Games are over.

    • @steelsteez6118

It's because the sales reps need to get approval from the sales manager at all times before being able to sell a Rolex. Especially if it's even a marginally popular model. That is why you hear all the stories of people who got the Rolex the same day that they left the store and a couple hours later or 30 mins later or what not they're told that they have something special for them. It's the reason this lady was waiting outside. She got the approval from the manager and then went outside to see if she could find him again. So not only do you have to win the battle with the sales rep and win them over, but then you have the second boss fight which is whether the manager will approve the sale. They literally are gate keepers lol. BTW , I know all this because I know someone who works at an AD.

A couple years ago I walked into an AD in my local mall, and struck up a conversation with the sales person. He of course asked me some questions like what I do for a living. I told him I had some other brand watches at home and i'm a newer collector. I was in the market for a two-tone Submariner. 3 weeks later, he called me and he got one in and sold it to me. I never bought anything from him, and to this day, I have no idea why he chose to sell it to me. I guess I got lucky.

It's just sad to admit, but Rolex has a responsibility against resellers, speculators and all sort of watch "pimps" which finally ends pushing the brand to be super selective when selling their pieces. Freeing or flooding the market will surely not help genuine collectors nor the prices they must keep consistent to maintain a stable market value, so at the end we, watch aficionados, are left behind forced to follow some Machiavellic ways to get one... or walking on blue Crocks hoping for miracles 😁
