  • I have 2 GT 1030s. One is passively cooled, one is actively cooled. Which offers better temperature and FPS? Does one overclock better than the other? Can we MOD them to make them EVEN BETTER!?!?
The answers to these questions AND MORE in today's episode of Techdweeb plays with his tech toys.

This is essential information to passively cooled card owners. The Gt 1030 is still relevant today and produced new brand

For the ones who're wondering for the huge temperature difference, it's because the 1030 which has active cooling has a cpu cooler of 1050 ti installed which gives out like 80w of heat, and yeah... this heat is a lot to manage... and if you use the same cooler on a 1030 cooling it is really easy tbh

Moral of the video : Instead of buying one with active cooler, just strap on a cheap fan to it lmao

This is what I've always done. Passive version of GT1030 runs really great with a DIY fan attached. I use twins 40mm fans attached between them and to the card with some few tie wraps too. It never goes over 60 C degrees. It also works great with Passive heating GT 710, if you want to go even cheaper (less than 75 US$).

I have bought an active cooled GT 1030 off the used market and performed a real 'Frankenstein'
job on the existing aluminium block of the GPU.
I removed the tiny fan and cut away a bunch of the cooling fins to allow fitting of my ancient after market
passive cooler I had laying around. It is an Arctic Accelero S1 previously fitted to an old GeForce 9800 GTX+.
This also required modifying the cooler fixing plate to mate correctly with the existing block, so the large passive
works kinda by proxy so to speak. I'm using large 140mm fan to gently blow air in to it.

I also bought that fanless version after my 1050 Ti went adios, and I will also strap on a fan on that thing cuz I am not comfortable with anything that soars past 65C. But I was having a hard time figuring out how to actually strap one on, so glad you actually showed how to strap it on, very helpful indeed 👍

Your video really cleared out my doubts on this topic. The Heat Sink's surface area of the passive cooled gpu is really great & if you use a extra fan on it or if your case has good ventilation. It performs better.

I have the same gpu with passive cooling and without any fans it gets to 80°,but i got a old case fan and put it on the side, didn't put it directly on the gpu and it doesn't go more than 60°...Nice video!

and where is the part where you use the 1030 active as a passive one? This colud be the real scenery to try them, cause a cpu fan with the silent sink gets the best of two options.. in temp, but the worst in noise and space (yes it's slimmer, but what happens with vertical space with double sink and not integrated fan?)

Hmmm that's a good question. They both have the same TDP and same power requirements, but I'd have to check to see the actual power draw. I'm going to be getting a kilowatt meter soon so that I can measure the power draw from the wall (power draw reporting can be incorrect), so maybe I'll do another video if I find anything interesting to report.

Definitely the RAM (go to 16gb) & the HDD (go to an SSD). You can upgrade the processor to an i7 2600 but I'd only do that if the price was right. The RAM & SSD would be must-have upgrades, IMO.
