  • this was supposed to be a 13-book-spooky-spectacular episode of the Recs Room, except I completely forgot to mention one of the 13 scary books - and that is The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry! Another creepy, fog-filled creation about hauntings and memory and very large snakes?? Anyway thought I should mention it here! Let me know what your spooky recommendations are below!!

    I live in Latinamerica, so I had to read both 100 years of solitude and The house of the spirits back to back, because I needed to compare them for my literature class. I really don't know how it will be translated, but in spanish, I feel like The House of the spirits is way easier to read, and if you aren't really used to magical realism, it's an amazing point to start. Also, as a girl, it feels way more relatable, because Allende treats so many problems that latin american women still have to face and really focuses on the impact we have in our society and Oh my gosh, I can't wait for you to read and share your opinions with us!

    Perfume by Patrick Süskind. It's magical realism + horror, though it's more creepy than scary. Definitely a good spooky time nonetheless.

    A middlegrade book that was my favorite book for a while is The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. It's about this boy who goes into this notorious house in his neighborhood and when he's there he finds a bunch of other kids and they are allowed to do whatever they want. No parents. No school. Only a few rules. But there's something more sinister going on. I think that's the best way I can pitch it without going into too much information or looking things up to refresh my memory.

    My reads this Autumn so far: Phantom of the Opera, We Have Always Lived in the Castle of course, The Turn of the Screw and Murder on the Orient Express. But my all-time favourite for the season are Dracula, Frankenstein and The Picture of Dorian Gray 🖤
    I really wanted to try for the first time Stephen King but I don't know 😬

    • @therealfirelord3359
      @therealfirelord3359 3 роки тому +4

      Stephen King has his issues (* ahem * overly sexual, insensitive to race) but he's so good at making the reader terrified and describing gore, and Tabitha King (also an author, and a really good one, and his wife) helps him not be a sexist prick. The Shining is in my opinion the peak of his career, but Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot (a Dracula retelling), or Carrie are good places to start as well!

    I'm glad you recommended The House of Spirits because I have never seen any of Isabel's books here in English-spoken booktube. Isabel is actually the author who made me fall in love with reading; The House of Spirits is kind of inspired in her own life (for example, the poet is Neruda himself) so I would really recommend you to read Paula, it's a letter to her daughter which was dying and Isabel tells her the story of their family. I love that book so much and I think you would like it!

    Macbeth - yessss! I love how you were all prepared to read something dark and beautiful from Bloody Chamber, did zoom in, and "wait, it's rather saucy". Yeah, this whole anthology is a bit, I studied it for my Literary theory course and it was a bit meh to apply psychoanalytic theory to it :P. I felt similarly about The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein! I'm always skeptical that a retelling can live up to the original--especially my fav, Frankenstein--but Dark Descent really highlighted understated elements of the original and painted Victor as an unreliable narrator in a way that I loved. Honestly my favorite Frankenstein retelling. Don't know if you know, but it's apparently getting a screen adaptation!

    Hi Emma. Have you ever read any Robert Aickman? He is one of Neil Gaiman’s favorite authors. Aickman wrote about fifty short stories, which are usually referred to as “strange stories.” I wouldn’t exactly call Aickman spooky, but he’s wonderful at generating a feeling of uneasiness. His stories do not resolve neatly, and they tend to linger in the memory (well, mine anyways) for long afterward as you wonder what exactly happened. There are several good collections of his work, including Dark Entries and Cold Hand in Mine. Oh, and my wife and I read The Woman in White several years ago and really enjoyed it. Hope you do too.

So I read one of her short stories (1=1, available on The NY Times) and recommended it to a reading club I’m a part of (we read women only). They liked it a lot! I found it a little hard to understand everything, she has such a way with referencing philosophy using a minimum amount of words hahaha anyways, I liked her writing. It IS very poetic. The Woman In White is atmospheric, eerie, and wonderful. You'll like Wilkie Collins. The Moonstone, No Name, and Armadale are other good ones from him. He got preachy toward the end of his career, which spoiled otherwise energetic and engaging stories, but the four I've named are good ones, in my view. / Drood by Dan Simmons is a light, entertaining book told from Collins's voice, in a pulp romp through Fu Manchu territory, dragging Dickens along for the ride. Fluff, but good, like cotton candy. (Candy floss).

    I read The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson because Neil Gaiman recommended it for a good adult title for All Hallow's Read. It's very strange, atmospheric, twisted, and you don't know what's real and what's imagined as the story unfolds. Two thumbs up.
