The Hacienda and Vampires of El Norte, both by Isabel Canas, are the most atmospheric creepy gothic books I've read! It you liked Mexican Gothic you'd love these.
The Silent Companions is on my night stand right now. When reading the Shining, I was in my 20s, still living home but alone in the house on a dim fall afternoon, sitting in a chair that divided the den from the dining nook/kitchen/back door, and I got so scared I had to switch chairs to one that was backed up to the wall. Great experience! I DNF'd Northanger Abbey and can't get into any Jane Austen...maybe I'm missing something? I adore Jane Eyre!!
if you like Houses as Characters, then you should read White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi. There are literally chapters narrated from the house's pov
I'm already writing this list out for myself, so I thought I'd share in case anybody else wanted the full list. :) Classics: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier The Woman in Black by Susan Hill The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe Jan Eyre by Charolette Bronte Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen Short Stories: A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman Houses as Their Own Character: It Will Just Be Us by Jo Kaplan The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno Garcia The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell The Shining by Stephen King House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski Southern Gothic: The Witching Hour by Anne Rice The House of Dust by Noah Broyles Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo The Elementals by Michael McDowell Beloved by Toni Morrison When the Reckoning Comes by LaTanya McQueen Modern: All the Murmuring Bones by A. G. Slatter They Drown Our Daughters by Katrina Monroe The Book of the Most Precious Substance by Sara Gran
Thank you for this! I love gothic novels and need to read more. I haven’t read very many modern gothic novels, so I’ll be adding some of these to my list!
Do I do a lot of short comments, or a really long one? Also, love the gothic heroine shirt, I am currently wearing a vampire fang bottle filled with blood and a necromancer spellbook necklace. Anyways, I agree that dread is an important part of gothics in general, and I actually include it in the definition when I try to define it to people. Some other gothics on my tbr that I didn't see here includes The Hacienda and The Vampires of El Norte. I didn't know the political history behind gothics and I found that quite interesting. If you ever do a deep dive on gothics I would watch it. I did actually know about most these books, because I too love this genre but they can be a pain to find so when I hear about them they do stick out. Have you heard of the Tales of the Weird series? It is this series of anthologies that are all horror stories. I have read Evil Roots: Killer Tales of the Botanical Gothic, and I have physical copies of Tales of the Tattooed, From the Depths, and Heavy Weather: Tempestuous Tales of Stranger Climes. There is also this other one which is a gothic and dark fantasy series that are from flame tree publishing. I am saying this because if you go to site and go to books its under that category, and there are so many. It is really worth a scroll to see what there is. There are also myths and tales and collections of certain author's works there, but it is worth a look and I have quite a few. I am currently reading Spirits and Ghouls Short Stories and Haunted House Short Stories. I have recently got a few new books, because I am in the mood for gothics and darker books in that direction, and one of them is The Last Tale of the Flower Bride which I am very excited to read. I also for A Study in Drowning and Rogue by Mona Awad. You definitely boosted They Drown Our Daughters on my tbr, because it didn't occur to me that it will match my current mood but now...I may be picking it up soonish. Great video, and I am looking forward to the next.
Ok well now I want a vampire fang bottle filled with blood. I thought about adding the Hacienda but it actually wasn’t my favourite! I’ll definitely look into the Tales of the Weird series though, those sound amazing. I am SO looking forward to Rouge by Mona Awad it’s one of my most hyped books of the year 😍 I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for this list! i've been wanting to read gothic books this year, so im definitely adding these to my TBR (btw i completely agree with your opinion of the shining)
I love Jane Eyre. Finally read it this month, then read a witchy re-telling, Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher... so good!! I'm glad I have a copy.. the cover is so cool too. Also just checked out another Jane Eyre inspo-book from the library.. but this one is called Mr. Rochester since it's from his POV. Sorry don't remember the author but wanted to at least mention it.. oh! also on my TBR is another Jane Eyre re-telling, Strange Unearthly Things by Kelly Creagh.. oh another one! also read another Jane Eyre-esque gothic novel, The Secrets of Hartwood Hall.. this is a fun mysterious one.. sorry don't remember the author of that one either but wanted to mention all these in case y'all were wanting more Jane Eyre coded reads. 😊
Some excellent recs!! I technically am still reading Summer Sons as life came along and kicked my ass and I didn't want to tab anything! But I'm hoping to pick it up again soon!!
@@itsbells Haha don't worry it was definitely happening until things went all wrong lol! It's been a rough year but slowly starting to improve? I think lol!
I'm not much for the Gothic at the moment, but you never know when a good recommendation might come in handy! If only I wasn't 100% with Heartstopper rn, I don't think I'll be able to focus on the spooky season 😂😂
I wanna read mysteries that aren't famous from specifically the 30s or 20s. I'm actually a beginner in reading, so how can I find stuff?? Authors, catalogs, titles? Shouldnt we have modern magazines organizing vintage authors by genres?
I would go to the library and ask the librarian if they have anything like that because I think that's the best place to find old books. Also potentially a really dreary used book store.
Hold on - you have a section labelled as "Houses are their own character" and you don't have Titus groan? Gormenghast is the gothicest gothic pile that ever piled...gothically.
@@itsbells I really hope you enjoy it. If you get on with it you will find that there is nothing (and I mean NOTHING) like it. Don't be tempted to rush - allow the text to smother you.

Ooh thank you I’ll check them out!
I recommend Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt and Midnight is the Darkest Hour by Ashley Winstead for southern gothic novels!

I next need to read mysteries of udolpho, I'm reading things in order, so I've read her first three. Castle of Otranto is fantastic

You’re so welcome! Yeah I have such a weird relationship with King but The Shining is forever a top 10 book
I wasn't sure what counted as Gothic, but now I'm wondering how many spooky kid movies/books are gothics.

I looooove AG Slatter! So underrated!

Great list of books but I needed to turn on closed captions to keep up with you! Slow it down, take a breath!

Found and subscribed to your channel from this video!!! It Will Just Be Us sounds so cool!!!
I really wanted to enjoy Caleb Williams, it put me to sleep five nights in a row before I gave up, whereas the monk was downright deranged
Love your videos. Thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you! 🖤
Omg .. I despised house of leaves and did not think of it as scary..
but I forgive you… 😂😂
dude honestly I get it I kind of hated it the entire time I was reading it too hahaha but I think about it all the time so it has to get the mention
Thanks for posting- I subscribed - and only a few months until next🎃

@@themelonsoup no can do, I live in Brazil, we don't do libraries.
@@ryushogun9890 Well, second hand shops with first researching online for the titles/authors you want is the way to go I guess lol
