I've read Convenience Store Woman around June and it turned out to have so much more depth to it than I was expecting. Some of the twists in the story are extremely dark, but overall I do believe that this truly is a book about happiness and not fitting in society while still finding a way to enjoy your life. I don't know if this was the author's way to critique our consumer society, but it definitely strikes as that at times and creates a space for the reader to reflect about the issue. Really hope you enjoy reading this one! x

And, side note, the movie is quite disliked, but extremely true to the novel, so if you like the novel, you'll most likely enjoy the movie--and the cast is spot on.

グール after he got married and had ten kids he started to resent his wife for the “financial burden of his kids” and then cheated on her, eventually left her. then he did the modern day equivalent of calling your ex “crazy” by publishing that all his marital problems had been his wife’s fault. eventually he discouraged even his kids from associating with their mother. it was just unnecessarily cruel imo. it’s reflected a bit in david copperfield but he writes a simplified version of it where he doesn’t look like an asshole lol. also he was extremely rude to hans christian andersen. there’s a lot to it, and it’s actually pretty interesting. i would look into it!!

Pablo Neruda’s work is almost breathtakingly raw and beautiful. Apparently he was a horrible person in real life, but he wrote like a dream. I really hope you read and enjoy them. I don’t hold with “cancel culture” (which basically happens anytime someone says or does something that modern thought says is wrong) and certainly not against someone who’s already been dead for almost 50 years. He’s paid the ultimate price for whatever he did, and the work left behind is truly beautiful and deserving of praise, even if the man who wrote it isn’t.

Please make sure to watch the movie of The Remains of the Day, too. It's a wonderful Merchant-Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, with a small role for Christopher Reeve. It's up there with Howards End, though slightly less well-known. ETA: So glad to see you're reading Shakespeare. I wish more people did. Julius Caesar is incredible; Twelfth Night is good, but not on the same level. And those Folger Shakespeare Library editions are marvelous; I love having the footnotes on the left-facing page.

I love Grendel! We had to read it for class and I was pleasantly surprised. Very cynical and existential, so not exactly for everyone. I also really liked Remains of the Day! Kazuo Ishiguro is always great.
The Goldfinch is on my TBR and I'm curious to see how you feel about it. I've read The Secret History but didn't really love it.

Only been watching your videos for a bit but I would say, I definitely don’t think Throne of Glass will be much your taste but I think it’s always worth giving a chance. I would also VERY HIGHLY recommend beginning with “The Assassins Blade,” the stories in there were published one a month leading up to the release of Throne of Glass in 2012 and create such a greater, holistic view of the world, and the situation we find Celaena in as well as a lot more context for her character. I think when tou read The Assassins Blade you get a generally way better appreciation for the situation present in Throne of Glass at its opening. There is a debate regarding whether “novellas” should be required reading in a series and personally I feel like the term novella only describes a story shorter than the fuller length novels and if an author says that the novellas are required reading then they are, but that’s just my opinion. The Assassins Blade though definitely will give you a way better look into the world and I would highly recommend starting there :)!

Hey! Would you maybe consider making a video, where you talk about your preferred genre throughout your years of reading?? It would be cool to hear your transformation in literature :))

Read Convenience Store Woman last week. There’s definitely more than meets the eye in that one. Would also recommend reading Murakami in order, if possible. I do feel like there’s a strong evolutionary arc to his work. And speaking of Japanese authors, you might want to add Banana Yoshimoto’s work to your list to check out (if you haven’t already). - Adding Iliac Creat to mine.

Oh God not The Metamorphosis!😱 I hate that book so much! I had to read it in high school and i had nightmares lol. Can't help it. And the least (bad?) thing about it is the giant cockroach guy.

If you want to add to your Phantom collection I have a Puffin Classics edition I’d be happy to send to you. I’m not going to keep it. The cover is a skull-like face with glowing eyes!
Also if you like Ishiguro I really recommend his novel “The Buried Giant”. It’s not one I hear mentioned as much but I thought it was fantastic. It’s a fantasy, set in a fictional post-Arthurian England!

_The Metamorphosis_ ,like _Dracula_ , _the Bell Jar_ etc, is something you must read but honestly is not a particularly good book. _Grendel_ is marvelous tho ofc "Beowulf" is a pre-requisite. As for Poe, I disagree with the way he led his life but there's no denying his power as a writer. "Twelfth Knight" is better in performance. There are many sight gags that don't always reach a reader. All-in-all, I'd say it's a pretty good haul - enjoy, and thx for posting.

Love your haul! You will have a great time, I have read some of them. A recommendation: Como Agua para Chocolate (like water for Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel is a wonderful, magical realism, love Mexican history with a lot of food magic in it. I really think you will enjoy it. Be well! Xx.

We had to write about a production of Metamorphosis for Gcse Drama and loved the story but I haven't read the book. Kafka intrigues me but I feel like I will have many existential crisis' whilst reading his novels. 😂😂

Hi emmie! First of all I want to say how much I love your videos and analyses as a fellow classics lover hahaha. Next I wanted to tell you that I'm also learning Korean and after a lot of struggles with duolingo I started using the Talk to me in Korean books ft the soundcloud and I highly recommend them! Funny enough I'm also a huge lover of Murakamis works,in fact colourless is the first book I read of him when I was in a very very dark place mental health wise and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me, this being said I wanted to give you (anyother person reading this interested on said book) some trigger warnings about assault and mental health in general, both a bit graphic, that may come in handy because for me they were quite a surprise hahaha nonetheless is an amazing piece or art.
    Love from spain xx
