I live in a small historic part of Germany where many of the buildings can be traced back to the middle ages. There's a castle right around the corner where I live that traces back to the 12th century and that medieval aesthetic is a huge part of the local culture of the people living here. Snow White is an incredibly comforting movie to me and I think a huge part of why is because it legit looks like it could take place just around the corner. Everything from the castle to the forest or the Dwarves' cottage looks so much like home to me.
You are wrong. The Disney movie is set in the 1860s(between 1858 and 1861) for a few reasons... 1) the cuckoo clock, as Austin Wrathall says in the video, was invented in the 1600s/1700s, so the movie must take place in the 1800s otherwise the dwarfs could not have a cuckoo clock in their house; 2) at one point in the movie Dopey use a dustpan and the dustpan was invented in 1858, so the movie must take place after that year. So, yes, maybe the dwarfs came up with those instruments based on their own ideas, BUT i think they must have see some humans(without being noticed by them) and they took some inspiration from their instruments
Your series is very interesting! It's interesting how faithful such old Disney classics were animated and how much research you put in it. Fun fact: the German movie version Snow White from 1955 (which I got to see on VHS instead of the Disney version in my childhood), uses the here mentioned famous Neuschwanstein castle as movie location instead of the time accurate versions.... @@missanne2908 actually, the 1955 did take some things from the Disney movie, such like the evil queen's death through a lightening rather than through the punishment with the hot iron shoes. and such blissful easy times when dwarves were played by children and there was no need to discuss who is supposed to be casted and whether and what is representation...
You forgot to mention that Dopey in one scene uses a dustpan, which was invented in 1858, and for me that supports the idea that Snow White take place in the 1860s, rather than the 1550s
Actually, the accordion in the 1500s are not completely out of place because Leonardo da vinci designed an instrument similar to accordion. Also most of the instruments that the dwarfs play were invented long after the 1500s, like the drum set which is a thing that in that period didn' exist, the clarinet was invented in the 17th century, the banjo didn' t exist in germany but in Africa

Funny enough there’s been a another book that actually breakdown where the movie is set which confirms the 1500s Germany too.

The 1955 German film is also much closer to the Brothers Grimm tale than the 1937 Disney film.

Our Castle of Thun which was built for the Habsburgs in Switzerland always reminds me of the Snow White Castle

the cuckoo clock was invented in the 1600s-1700s so the 1800s setting Is very likely
