The few actresses of their generation who didn’t shy away from looking “old” as they went through their lives. Hence they cornered the market for mature actresses. No botox, no facelifts, no veneers - just class and talent ❤️
These two ladies are not national treasures they are world treasures ! I am not British and I love them both, their talents will stay forever ,they are unstoppable ,Dame Judy and Dame Maggie great friends and amazing actresses .
Interesting BUT inconceivable that Judi's lead role in 67 episodes of the comedy romance As Time Goes By, from 1992 to 2005, did not even rate a mention. An unforgivable omission.
One of our local PBS stations airs an episode every Saturday, and I watch religiously. Even though I've seen it all. There are also some episodes made for BBC Radio.
Yes, they deserved it. Both are astounding. Maggie Smith was amazing as McGonagall, but her role in Downton Abbey was so stunning, it made the show worth watching if only for her.
And those two roles were later-in-life roles for her. I remember seeing her for the first time in "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie" - and was just amazed. I had been so used to US-produced razzle-dazzle stuff, where all the women were under-30, perfectly shaped Barbie dolls, and all the men were matinee idols - that to see a movie like that in 1969, when I was just 20 yrs old - was a revelation, that's for sure. I've adored both Dame Maggie and Dame Judi since I became aware of them - more than 50 yrs ago.
Oh did I love Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey, but she also played really well that mother nun in Sister Act. And then of course Judy Dench in James Bond 007.
Watching this today as we’ve just lost a national treasure. I loved her in many roles but, I will never forget watching Dame Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie as a little girl. A wet Sunday afternoon a lifelong fan was born
Yes, absolutely loved that film! I was very young when I saw it. I watched it again recently, now that I'm getting old, and I realize what a subtle, funny, beautiful performance Maggie Smith gave. Difficult t o choose one, but may be my all time favorite Maggie Smith performance 😂❤
Idc what anyone says, Maggie Smith is literally the most talented woman to grace a screen, and I will legitimately weep on the day she passes as if it were my own grandmother. That woman is a treasure.
No question! Judi Dench is excellent too, but Maggie Smith delivers her comedic lines with perfection! I realize she is not the writer, but the one to deliver. Usually I can see a funny and cutting remark coming, but not with Maggie. Her timing and expression are the best!
@@susanmoorhead8762 You nailed it. Maggie's talent and history makes you expect perfection, and her delivery always takes it a step above. She isn't just skilled at delivery. She is skilled at defining and delivering her role so you experience the character. Amazing talent.
I love these two beautiful, classy iconic ladies. I have enjoyed every movie I have watched with them. I am heartbroken the great Maggie Smith has left this earthy realm . Thank you for your incredible body of work that we can on occasion watch. May your memory live on, may it never fade. May future generations watch your movies and feel the joy we have all felt. Rest in peace beautiful Lady.
Both, Dame Judi and Dame Maggie, have brought me so much joy for most of my life, and I'm no spring chicken. I adore you both so much. Miss you Maggie ❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹
Tea with Mussolini will always be one of my favorite movies because of these wonderful ladies along with Joan Plowright, Lily Tomlin, and Cher. And others. Always a treat to watch.
If I had the opportunity of inviting 10 Actors to dinner and just spending the evening getting to know them, these two brilliant ladies would be the first ones invited. I love them both for what they've given us.
Wondering put together. Absolutely love these two. Both incredible legends in their own right who still continue to make an impact to this day. Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Angela Lansbury are my favorites.
Angela really was excellent. She had her detective tv series here in the US, taking place in Maine. Something happened between her and the channel that ran it, and she was quite rightly devastated. I hope they start to run them again on PBS. Occasionally I will be watching an Older movie, and I recognize her, especially by her voice. But she stayed much the same in appearance ivdr many decades.
When filming "Shakespeare in Love" Judi Dench had to wear very high heels in order to be in the shot with Gwyneth Paltrow. The Spice Girls were very popular at the time, so she started calling the shoes "Tudor Spice". A nickname that was picked up by the director and crew. 😂❤️
For Judi Dench, she had a marvelous role in the film 84 Charing Cross Road, covering the relationship of Helene Hanff of New York and a London bookshop over 30 years. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. But that’s probably because it’s about people AND books❤
I could listen to stories like this for hours. But in order to have careers like this, there are years of struggles and endless waiting while time goes on.
Watching A Fine Romance was so much fun, two awkward people finding support and love, and knowing that they were married just showed what wonderful actors they were and are. Also laughed so often when watching As Time Goes By. Now I'm going to have to watch them again, again! 🥰🥰
I never tire of watching As Time Goes By re-runs over and over. Such huge talents such as Judi and Geoffrey are just a perfect combination and made the show the success it is to this day 🖐😁🇦🇺❤❤
This was wonderful, I am so glad I clicked on it. Truthfully, I clicked on it because I was wondering what Judi Dench & Maggie Smith had to do with the Danes. Poor eyesight can add much humor to life, beyond placing one in an Impressionistic world.
Dearly love the combined work of these two paragons of stage, screen, and film! I can not pick my favorite. That is why I love when they collaborate and work together. Thunder & Lightning every time. Thank you so much for this wonderful tribute to these legends, these icons, these dames, these actors! Brava! Brava!
Lovely. I have to say, Maggie Smith’s role in the 1993 version of ‘The Secret Garden’, where she plays the lady of the house, is phenomenal. She starts off as a bit of a stern, judgmental character, maybe even a villain, but she really just needs to keep the estate running efficiently. I recall her iconic line, as she’s locking Mary (the young troublemaker, who keeps escaping to the secret garden) in her room: “You stay put, or I’ll BOX your ears!!” And locks the bedroom door.😳😂 … But by the end of the film, you see her character completely change, and actually SMILE & weep tears of joy-as the entire house, servants, maids, etc. all happen to see the (supposedly) crippled Colin walking, with his emo cousin Mary and his equally emo father…😊At that moment you see Maggie’s face completely change from the rest of the movie, as if everyone has this weight lifted off of their shoulders and it’s like, okay. All is good in the world again. Seriously, it’ll have me in tears. I’m such a sap, I’ll more or less cry throughout the whole film! I think it’s such an underrated masterpiece. The music, the scenery, the animals… The incredible adult AND child actors in it. I almost believe that each actor involved must’ve been channeling Maggie’s star power on set. She was easily the biggest star among the cast, yet her role wasn’t even a “main” character-though still integral to the story.
The first movie in which I saw Dame Maggie Smith was the 70s classic comedy, _Murder By Death,_ which features a fantastic ensemble of highly skilled people in each role, and is one of my all-time favorite movies to watch regularly. I highly recommend it. The first movie in which I saw Dame Judi Dench was _A Room With A View,_ mentioned in the video. This is another all-time favorite to watch over & over again. (RIP Julian Sands, who played gorgeous George Emerson in _A Room With A View_ )
Love you Ms. Dench. Ms. Smith is awesome too.🇨🇦. Reruns of, “As Time Goes By” are still on PBS here Monday through Friday and I can’t count on both my hands how many times I have seen every episode (need both feet, too)!

Dame Judi resembles my late mom( who was from Brooklyn) & I'd jokingly call her "Dame Doris Dench". Judi and Maggie have such amazing chemistry together, whether they're the ladies having an adventure in "A Room with a View" or trying to make peace with living in a vastly different country to their own.
Monster talents who are so humble, never taking life too seriously, still incredibly funny and aging gracefully. Everything about them is to be admired. They have set the bar high for future actors. 🖐😃🇦🇺❤

Two of my absolute favorites. Both ladies are powerhouses in their own rights. Some of my most beloved roles of Dame Judi Dench are as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice and Dame Maggie Smith as Caro in Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
These Dames are my favorite actresses. I enjoy seeing them together in movies like 'A Room With a View', Tea with Mussolini' and more. Their character playing are so convincing.🎉
The first time I ever saw Dame Maggie Smith on screen was when starred as The Reverend Mother in Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg. She became an instant favorite of mine. It warmed my heart to see these two legendary actresses getting their flowers and still going strong.
These are two of my very favorite actresses of all time for so many years! How neat to have them interviewed. One of my favorites of their movies together is "Tea With Mussolini" It is delightful to see they have had a long time close friendship.
Absolutely wonderful video about two fantastic actors/Dames. I have loved watching them in anything they do. I remember The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and was mesmerized by her acting. She always seems to have a secret that she knows and we want to know when she is up there. Maggie Smith had me from then on. Her part in Downton Abby keeps me in stitches laughing and reminds me of my Grandmother with her little quips under her breath. With Judi Dench I have enjoyed watching her do anything as well. Her portrayal of M in James Bond was a wonderful surprise and I looked forward to seeing her in the film just as I did Q when he was in the Bond films. As Time Goes By was also a favorite of mine and I love it when both of them are in a program together. Thank you for this lovely look at them both.
Dame Judy in Chocolat! So parallel to her sassy side! I have adored these two for almost all my life! Thank you for such a wonderful homage to two GOATs of this world! 😂💞🙌
I enjoyed this but I cannot believe you didn’t use Dame Maggie in Downton Abbey asking “What..what is a weekend?” That question so perfectly encapsulates a character Dowager Duchess. A woman of her age and class in the start of the 1900’s. Perfect
Love these two and enjoyed your video BUT how can you discuss the career of Dame Judy Dench and not even mention 9 seasons of "As Time Goes By"???? I love that show.
The few actresses of their generation who didn’t shy away from looking “old” as they went through their lives. Hence they cornered the market for mature actresses. No botox, no facelifts, no veneers - just class and talent ❤️

Beautifully done sir! Two divine ladies
What? No mention of As Time Goes By - many of us Americans were introduced to Dame Judy Dench in this delightful series.
Maggie Smith in The Lady in the Van was like Lady Grantham playing an eccentric elderly bag lady living in a van. Vagabond nobility!

Tk you! I loved to watch
Such talent two of the best
RIP Margaret Smith, 1934- 2024.
Interesting how Smith's voice changed over the years.
I hope I could age as gracefully as these amazing women.
Dame Judy in Chocolat! So parallel to her sassy side! I have adored these two for almost all my life! Thank you for such a wonderful homage to two GOATs of this world! 😂💞🙌
Love her in the series Cranford as Miss Mattie & Ladies in Lavender, lady Bracknell.
I had no idea Toby Stephens was Dame Maggie's son! Does make for an interesting link in "Die Another Day" where Judi Dench plays M.
I admire these two so much
I enjoyed this but I cannot believe you didn’t use Dame Maggie in Downton Abbey asking “What..what is a weekend?”
That question so perfectly encapsulates a character Dowager Duchess. A woman of her age and class in the start of the 1900’s. Perfect
Rest in peace, Maggie, what a career and what a life👏
Love these two and enjoyed your video BUT how can you discuss the career of Dame Judy Dench and not even mention 9 seasons of "As Time Goes By"???? I love that show.
She also played in Cranford for the BBC and return to Cranford Amazing serie
