Cultists: [construct a complex alter of worship from several dozen sacred materials before setting it on fire in worship of their god] Mothman: *L Ä M P*
I kinda wish there was a faction for the Mothman cult. Dressing up like a cultist myself, I think it would be fitting. Wise and holy Mothman, watch over us in our trials.
Same when i started i fully expected the monthman cult or wood armor to be a thing for newbies. Ive still after 1 yr of playing have never gotten a full set of wood armor/cult and if did, it be so fucking useless.
You monster the Mothfolk are clearly sentient beings whose intelligence is on par with or even exceeds ours. p.s I'm obviously not saying that to you as a person in the real world but to your in game self/character.
"Why Worship Mothman?" Um, I'm not totally agreeing with their practices, but for one thing, the Mothman is real. Secondly, there does seem to be something to worshiping the creature. Mothman doesn't attack the cultists, walks and nests among them, and seems to be drawn to effigies of the Mothman (again, they walk and nest among them, as well as lay eggs around the various statues and totems of it). Something else that's odd about the Mothman, it doesn't die like other insects; instead of leaving an intact corpse or even just chunks of it, it leaves a pile of dust and powder as if it were disintegrated.
And Cultist wrathwings seem warped from normal humans, some have black veins and eyes, so there maybe some sort of blessing involved with the most devout
Or its a nod to Cthulhu in the LoveCraft mythos. "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." ("In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."). In the lore, the City of R'lyeh is supposed to be deep within the ocean, within Cthulhu sleeps awaiting his return. We know there are lovecraftian beings in the Fallout universe, such as the being the Dunwitch Corporation, Uhg-Qual'tath, worshipped (Fallout 3-4). As well as "The Interloper" in the lucky hole mine (Fallout 76), the splinter group of the mothman cult worship.

Just wanted to say that I enjoy Widgeon's F76 lore videos (and always learn something new) and that I was pleased to stumble across his F76 camp not too long ago.
The wastelanders update brought me back after not being happy preordering the game for $80, the lore is honestly amazing in this game, I'm not sure why people hate on it.
I hate comments like this. "Here's one good thing about the game I will now Ignore everything that was wrong with it and ask why others didn't like it" you can't be serious. Do you live under a rock? The oxymoron in even stating you yourself where not happy enough to pre order it, and now that you've found one good reason to play for yourself, your asking why others are hating? It's actually annoying
Im pretty sure the rat posion in some of the places is left behind from previous church goers ending their lives during or in the aftermath of the war. theres a few churches like that from before waselanders.
I don't even think they're necessary in this series but I guess it ain't a fallout game without them bullying or tolerating others for that nice and shiny transistor (oh I meant vaccum tube, the transistor wasn't invented in the Fallout divergence).
@@timothyharris1125 so if you got the choice between joint a cult and finding out the secrets of the interloper and mothman, helping people in the wasteland and having the abandon towns filled with life, OOOoOoooor you could beat up some ghoul, what would you pick?

It seems to be, even if only tangentially. Jeff Lane was originally from the original mothman cult before being called to Lucky Hole Mine, and now these notes mention a gift of the woods, and the Interloper is referred to as the Firstborn of the woods.
I think the Mothmen work for the interloper. We first hear about the interloper in Point Pleasant, after a Mothman cultist learns of it and seeks it out. Later, this same Mothman cultist leaves a tape behind at Lucky Hole Mine, talking about how he's the chosen one. The various effigies around Lucky Hole Mine look similar to to the kind made for the Mothman in other locales. Furthermore, after Wastelandes was released, Lucky Hole Mine became a Mothman Cultist hideout, with Mothman Cultists located even in the Interloper's room, around the Interloper itself.
the last holotape sounds like their ritual suicide and "redemption" is the salvation they seek from mothman, also hilarious that they build a pyre to summon mothman b/c lol he's a moth
The coolest thing I have discovered is that the cultists will attack and fight a scorched mothman I have encountered it twice now! I really love that lil detail ♥ 👌
I'm not sure if it's just me what's a voice in the holotapes sounds like the leader from children Adam far Harbor DLC he sounds very similar it could be just me

If we are on the topics if cultist here Why are there giant bronze heads underground I find in caves? (theres 2 in the white spring shop of building plans)
I've seen other youtubers find connection between the Mothman and The Interloper in The Deep. Some serious Lovecraftian stuff in this game :) I think one holotape mentioned the creatures from the sea so maybe they are the interlopers. Some holotapes and letters suggest that the interloper is also an alien so it fits the Lovecraftian idea.
I believe some parts of the notes and hollow tape recordings may reference the cultists who where told to “go to higher ground” the day the bombs fell. It is possible that these cultists escaped and spread the word of their cult throughout the wasteland. Also maybe the part about Mothman rising from the earth Could be a reference to the interloper?
In the lucky hole mine there are sacrificed settlers in the main chapel room, and in addition, cultists worship the interloper still. I'm sensing some expansion potential with our favorite zealots, eh?
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
With that last holotape, I believe the cultist is leaning towards setting off a nuke to summon more mothmen(I think that's the plural) as a way to fix the world.
I lived in West Virginia for 32 years and there are no Mothman Cultists in WV. Just Mothman followers only. I think Bethesda made up Mothman Cultists to get more players involved in playing the game more. They spawned on the ridge just north of crater attacking radstags. They didnt come to crater until I engaged them with sniper fire. Lol I thought the Raiders would fight them, but they also stood around.
What if the “redemption” holotape is an indication that they were wrong? After all there’s several mothmen one good, ones that are neutral(he will just vanish away) and ones that are hostile. Maybe that tape is them realizing that they are worshiping the wrong(hostile) mothmen and can’t summon the good one
In the second to last note it mentions a winged glowing one and there being a great old one who watches from beneath the ocean. Anyone getting heavy Cthulhu or a Cthulhu type god being under the sea above something like mothman and that mothman isn’t really that intelligent as we think.
