5 Licks GUARANTEED To Get You Out of a Plateau

- Here are 5 guitar licks to help get you out of a plateau and bring back the motivation to keep playing. It doesn't matter where you feel you are in your playing or how successful you are, you are not alone. Every musician goes through this phase of near depression where you feel you are going nowhere. So I have done my bit to try and combine 5 (more like 10) licks to help you get back on track and help you out. They are a challenge but they are chosen specifically because they go very well together.
Gear: Guitar: Charvel Super Stock So Cal Amp: Yamaha THR10X
I’m a guitarist from the UK, completely self-taught and have been playing since I was 12. I play Hard Rock including AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and more modern influences including Alter Bridge and Steel Panther.
I graduated with a First Class (BA Hons) Music Business Degree from the University of Sussex, studied it at BIMM Manchester.
At uni, I helped arrange a masterclass for Ozzy Osbourne/Firewind guitarist Gus G and played an important part in the preparations for a Guthrie Govan clinic. Personal highlights of mine include playing on stage with Steel Panther in January 2018 and when I got the opportunity to spend the day with Steve Vai on his Passion and Warfare Anniversary Tour.
Since launching the channel properly in 2015, I am very pleased to have received positive comments from Sam Coulson (Asia), Michael Starr (Steel Panther), Rick Graham, Henning Basse (Firewind Lead Vocalist) and other notable figures in the guitar world.
I teach subscribers complex rock licks, provide other tuition videos and demonstrate exciting kit and equipment for shops such as RichTone Music in Sheffield, Sounds Great Music in Cheadle.
I’m a connoisseur of fine guitars and I am very proud to be known on UA-cam for being a user of Charvel Guitars, Yamaha THR amps, EVH Gear and Stormshadow Guitarworks.

I started playing when I was 12, I am now 50. I had a record deal when I was 19 back in the hairband 80's. When the Seattle seen started, I decided to start working as a fine artist and gave up music. I am now working full time as an oil painter and have been very successful. I decided to start playing guitar again and am dumbfounded as to why I ever stopped, now that I see how much I love it again. My thinking in the past was anytime I spend playing guitar should be spent painting. That was 20 years ago. I was wrong. I have been back at it for close to a year now and it took me a bit of time to get back in shape. I decided to be a better player than I was before and have watched your videos for help. You have helped me a great deal Cameron. Your lessons are fun and inspiring. I can't thank you enough.
What band where you in
You must be a really smart person to be able to choose two art forms to make a living at. Most people can’t even make money at one art and have to learn a trade or starve.
Paint up your guitar!

My girlfriend said. "You watch him play more than you play your own guitar." I said. "yes, I have given up!"
Don't give up! Pick up that guitar!
Nah bro we all need a break and even when ur watching u can still be studying but if u ain't as good as remembering exactly what he does than slow the video down to help u write the licks down. Alot of times when we take a little break we comeback even better. So really u haven't gave up because ur still fascinated with guitar.
Man... I try to remind myself that most of us want to be awesome but it’s mainly competing with those who want to be awesome too. People want a great song rather than just being able to hear someone jam on a guitar. Cam is far beyond a ridiculous player, no doubt. Wish I could come close!
NEVER give up, what else is there but music ? NEVER give up, you gotta keep playing, how bad do you want it ? Well then go get it, it's yours!!!! NEVER give up.
Me also. Why would I go to all that trouble, time and gear when I can just listen to cameron play all the chops I've dreamed of. I just wish I could have realized before I wasted 40 years and a boxcar full of gear
I like the optimism of brits.
You call it a plateau, we call it a slump.
Yea and when I go fishing, I send out invitations and light the fire before I've even cast the first line ;)
Covid-19 self quarantine = discovering great vids like this 👍🏻
Ty Cameron. Im 48 and picked up the guitar again a few years ago. I come from a musical family. I have gone through some traumatic things in my life. My 3rd brain surgery last march.
My dad who put a guitar in my hand at 10 years old, put that fire back in me again. Guitar has been the best therapy that any hospital could have gave me. I credit you, Steve Stine. And Andy James for taking me to my third level of playing. I was stuck in a rut for years and quit. I always thought if we had you tube in the 80's it would have been the cats meow but i spent 4 hrs at a guitar center jamming on black friday and realized that isnt true. One either has it or they dont. It doesnt mean that one cant become a great player. They just have to work harder.
Times have changed. When i was in a music store in the 80's and i heard a shredder playing, i was in his face saying show me and show me more. Not today. They stand around watching acting scared or jelous. Sad.
Cameron, our time isnt gone until they close the casket. Peace and keep the leasons coming
Thanks Cam. I love lick #3. That's a really cool way to ascend. Thanks for sharing - always inspiring!
You are a magnificent guitar teacher kind sir. You sparked my love for guitar again. You always bring a fresh content and hope you'll keep it up. Thanks heaps !

You are one of the most talented guitar teacher, your technicality & simplicity is awesome
This dude kills it in these videos. Has helped me immensely as a newer guitar player. Thanks!
So good at demonstrating techniques. The best mate. You can feel it just by watching better than anybody else trying to teach moves
Love it. Keep on rockn
I appreciate your talent.
As always, thanks for sharing Cam. Quite a bit of the stuff you've shown I use as exercises to try to build speed and coordination, but this stuff being based on pentatonics, I might actually be able to incorporate into my own playing. Looking forward to spending a bit of time with this lesson and my guitar when the wife and kids give me some free time!
Awesome lesson.........your technique is flawless......great video....thanks!
Incredible lesson. Man I appreciate your videos. This is the kind of guitar I need to play. I'm getting closer. Thanks.

That is the awesomest Charvel Super Strat I've ever seen! Awesome silver Sparkle with black face and Rosewood board! I'm Jelly!
Best 14 year old guitar teacher I've ever seen!
Enjoying your vids, I'm improving a lot, thank you! (Side note: if I'd known you were tuned to Eb before I started trying to copy you that might have saved me an hour of confusion!)
Your guitar playing is what i wish mine will be one day, i always try to learn licks from your amazing improvised solos, Cheers =)
Thanks so much Yoni! Keep playing and learning the licks and riffs that inspire you to keep going. :)
Sick!

I used to watch your older videos, and looking at a relatively newer vid for me, I didn't think you could get any better but I was wrong. you really blow my hair back man. Well done, you, Cam

Tuas aulas são muito boas cara , parabéns ! 🎸🎸🇧🇷🇧🇷🤘
Great video Cameron ! ! Excellent playing . . . . . . phrasing is spot on. It was a joy to watch and I've played with some of the best (back in the day). I've been on a plateau for years now. I have a lot of great equipment and have somehow allowed my plateau to override my love for playing. Arrrrrg ! ! ! Ugggggg ! ! ! Thwaaaaaap ! ! ! ! For this great video you get a Thumbs up and a scribe my brother ! !
Your style of picking is all I wanna learn.
love ya cam. your amazing. please please when you teach use a standard tuning so its easier for the majority to follow along. i would utilize your lessons much more often! stay awesome. forever a sub!!
For me, old guy brought up on Clapton etc., lick #3 is the most lyrical and does not require massive speed to sound great. Thank you kindly!.
Thanks Cam for preventing me from giving up entirely. I came close to selling off my stuff and taking up a new hobby. You’ve inspired me to try again. You are a brilliant guitar player. I would give almost anything to play like you.
Wouldn't we all I been for 50 years and if I could play that one run I'd feel accomplished
Dame ! Looks easy ... But when I try it - it is very hard. Great job!
This is gonna come in handy when i get my new kramer the 84 next week!! Thanks my man, great as always.
Awesome Julian! I hope you enjoy the licks and the new axe. :)
God like tone and great playing.
Really appreciate that thank you so much! :)
@@CameronCooper love the videos. And I think i want to go buy charvel now.
Someone actually teaching licks that are useful and can be used in different soloing situations and can be used all over the fretboard thanks cam
Would love to see a tutorial for what you played from 0:28 - 0:32! Killer stuff, as always!
I see that we have a mutual love of Charvel and EVH guitars!!! I can never have too many Charvels, lol.
I've seen your playing progress mate from when i 1st subscribed to your channel when you had around 1k subscribers now you're on 18k... Awesome from your fellow UK Fan 😉👍🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks so much Dave! It's been a lot of work but I will be doing an awful lot more! :)
Damn brother, I know you don't have a clue who I am, but you have helped me more than you could possibly fathom, so glad you are doing what you are doing... THANK YOU
Really appreciate the comment Greg!! Thanks so much! :)
You're not THE Greg Easter are you? 🤪🤪🤣
I'm not sure if u already have but can u make a lesson on those arpeggios u played at the start. Love ur videos man
cool guitar!
Dude you’re awesome! Really digging these lick lessons! 🤘🏼
Great video. Clear and straight forward. Great player and nice lad too. Restored my faith that it still is Great Britain. I want a Charvel but not sure I could live with this finish. Sorry dude. Keep up the good work.
Thanks a lot Jason, really appreciate it! Thankfully Charvel offer a huge range of finishes on their guitars. The Super Stock So Cal I am playing in this video is actually discontinued. :)
@Mike Smith Great stuff! I know you'll love it!
Super tasty intro!!
Thank you! ;)
DOOD these are totally useful!!!!!!
Your #3 there seems to be creating a bridge between the minor pentatonic and the melodic minor. Very cool.
Any Aldrich/Sykes inspired lessons coming down the chute? Two of my biggest hero's!
Nice playing and tips. For those playing along wondering why your guitar sounds different... the tuning is dropped by a semitone :) Eb,Ab,Db,Gb,Bb,Eb
Excellent channel. I'm getting frustrated: if only you could also teach these magical set of notes you put between each lick :)
Your playing is so clean.. Many Hours? Very good
Holy SMOKES, good buddy, can you take it easy? For f*ck sake you're melting my brain with these licks
One thing to get out of a plateau is just Richie Blackmore it lol just play off of feel and go nuts. Video tape it so u remember the licks and riffs later , learning other people's songs and techniques is great but coming up with ur own songs and sounds is alot of fun ... doing this really got me playing outside the box.
You have the coolest looking guitars and you can play the shit out of them!
Those 1st few things you mentioned, yes ,yes and oh yes....
I wanted to learn guitar. But after seeing this at 49, i realized I just don't have the time. Your talent is great.
You can do it!! It does take time and sacrifice to get there
These remind me of the first descending pentatonic run I learned in the 70s from Led Zeppelin “good Times bad Times” The triplets after the break I’m sure you know what I mean and the EB string Ascension is similar to “rock you like a hurricane” you’re right that’s guys have been doing this and when I was learning to play almost everything was minor pentatonic we were doing Judas Priest, iron maiden, scorpions, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc. etc. Van Halen mixed it up a bit and then Randy Rhoads and of course Malmsteen he baffled most of us because after you play “free bird” or “flirting with disaster” 200 times this stuff is second nature but a very good lesson for people starting out in this generation of altered tunings 7 & 8 string guitars, arpeggios major, minor and harmonic minor and of course the modes many of the better sounding kids today have at least a basic grasp of theory, would’ve killed to have this kind of info back then
Amazing playing and tone!! What are you playing thru??
