- I wanted to share with you guys some little licks and hacks which improved my hybrid picking but will also serve as a technique booster. The goal of this lesson is to help you make your playing feel more effortless to make your style more dynamic. I didn't want to focus solely on lead playing either but also some more of the cleaner more melodic ideas seen towards the end of the video.
Inspirations for this lesson are Zakk Wylde, Nick Johnston, Rick Graham, Eddie Van Halen, Gus G, Jake E Lee, and Randy Rhoads.

I started playing guitar because of you.........in my 40's. Now I'm shredding shit I never thought possible..... and I still have a long way to go... it never ends!! You're my favorite player on UA-cam!!
Well done, what would the best way you suggest to someone like me, who know only few cowboy chords ? Thanks
I am left handed also, picking has always been an issue w me. I will try these techniques. Great video. Thank you.
Whats so crazy on say the zakk style pluck pick in Am pentonic is unless someone teaches it to you slow, your never gonna figure it out fast so trying to just pick licks like that up on your own is almost impossible , but once you get the idea, oh how it opens doors , so cool , thanks cameron such great teaching skills
That sounds so good man, I love these videos since I learn so much from them. I appreciate you for everything you do here!
I appreciate that!
Amazing playing, great guitar note choice/style etc. I'm literally going to learn this whole lesson.
Subbed 🤘
Congrats on 80k cam!
WOW. What a HUGELY helpful and genuinely AMAZING batch of instruction this is! I can tell from just the past couple hours that this is REALLY going to open up my playing in a really BIG way.
Thanks tons, mate! 👍👍
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very nice!, great stuff!, congrats on 80k!
Thanks, Cameron. I haven't tried to learn something truly new in quite a while, so I find myself playing the same stuff every time I pick up the guitar. So I'm working on this slowly and it's coming along (slowly) but I look forward to it becoming one of the natural things I do when I pick up an instrument. Thanks again !!
I've dabbled in hybrid a few times over the years. I like what you're doing and it really is helpful to get that speed and sounds. I've got a small blister on my middle finger just practicing that today...hopefully it toughens up! Thanks!
You are such a great player and excellent teacher. My best to you.
Sounds awesome! Thanks!
IMHO, this ranks among the Top 5 of REALLY helpful vids on UA-cam regarding hybrid picking. Lots of cool stuff to fool around/experiment with. Thank you and right on, dude! Great sound also, btw! :-)
Thanks a lot Marcus! 😊
Well done. I’m well impressed and inspired. Thanks !!
Very cool mate! Love it!
Duuuude nice licks, great playing and what a beautiful guitar. This orange crush just looks like a sunset.
Been waiting for a video like this! Thanks!! 👍
You're welcome!
Duuuuude... your channel is so good. I love your playing style. I've been playing for a long time, but took an extended break... you are definitely inspiring me to get serious again.
Okay. This is one of the first "I gotta incorporate this concept" videos I've seen in a while. I lean toward hybrid picking as is. Cool lines... and by the way, that roasted maple neck... nice!
Great lesson. Love that arpeggio trick👌
This man is pure inspiration
Wow coops..insane and so much to take on board thank you! Haven't heard much from Mr Rick Grahame recently...but that particular lick/pattern is much appreciated!!..cheers
He's been busy working with Charvel ;)
So great, thankyou 🙏👊 always great lesson 🔥🤟😎👊
Synchronization between my hands is where I have trouble when playing fast. Great channel BTW
Great lesson, I think I’m gonna find this one useful, thank you, keep em coming 👍🏻
Great licks, that alternate/hybrid picking is a really interesting technique! 👍
I've been playing for 5 months and didn't even know that hybrid picking existed ,but it's very interesting .Thank you Cam
Cam for president 🤟🤟 thank you
Hybrid picking really enhances the guitar sound. Especially when going fast. Never knew how to do it. Will work on it. Tnx.
Awesome video!! Thanks
Awesome dude!
Love the Aftershock reference - one of VH's most overlooked songs! My favorite song on that album.
Glad you liked it
Great video, glad I found you.Thanx
Another great lesson!
Picking is what I struggle with most. My right side was paralyzed years ago. Through a lot of work over many years I have been able to play again but alternate picking is hard for me but I can down pick pretty fast.
Good progress to you!
I'm in the same boat with both my hands, back in 2012 I watched in horror as both of my "mud hooks" rolled up into tight balls paralyzed frozen solid from vasculitis affecting my extremities.. after playing guitar since I was 6 the word "devastating" hardly covers how I felt... It's been a struggle, but I put in at least 4 hours everyday stretching my hands around the neck of the guitar is the only therapy that has worked getting my fingers to open up again... unable to grip a flatpick I switched to the thumbpick, so I keep playing finally after nine years I've found a therapy that works for my hands and my mind... keep on keeping on whatever works best for you!
@@phillvisnaw1037 I thought about a thumb pick. I bought a Pick Clip that holds the pick to the thumb but I'm not used to it yet. The pick clip was designed by Chris Broderick. I hope it gets easier for you. It's painful sometimes to play so I need a long warm up time.
@@brpadington I heard that! Hey about the thumbpick I've tried them all not sure what pick clip is though so I'll be googling it.. my thumbs change though out the day where most mornings the damn picks are projectiles shooting off across the room and night they pinch off the circulatory so it's hard to find consistency especially in thumbpick industry... Currently I'm diggin' these Zookies M-20s with 20% angled tip.. I tried their M-30 but the tip angle was too extreme.. the idea is that angle is striking the strings at ergonomically comfy location for the hand ot maybe the wrist. I don't know how it works but it does.. ohh yeah if you struggle with the pick flying off try using hair jell so run the right hand through the hair style you admire most & wallah! Thumbpick stayed all the way through "a Wildwood Flower" picking like a wild man on crack! I don't have a clue what works for anyone else but I'm sure proud of my hair jell hack! Keep on picking it will get better!
@@phillvisnaw1037 Damn. Your experience would be very devastating. It’s like a dancer who can’t use her legs or a fine artist who can no longer see well enough. It’s great though, that you were able to start playing again after a lot of dedicated self physical therapy.
I’ve been dealing with something similar, where chronic severe pain has basically caused me to stop playing guitar due to carpel tunnel and arthritic type of pain and locking up of joints when I play for more than just a couple of minutes. The same occurs with my legs and walking. I can push through but pay for it.
Exercise doesn’t seem to help, though I know it’s a double edged sword. A body requires movement, yet the more I exercise the more I hurt. There’s seems to be a fine line. Reading comments like yours are inspiring though; being reminded that others have experienced something similar and were able to fight through it.
Dude I learn so well from you!
Got this. Thank you Cameron.
This is a great video. Thanks for the various snippets of playing styles and for sharing some cool licks in the process. I like how you demonstrate things slowly at first.
I’m also a leftie but ended up learning on a right handed guitar. Maybe that’s why I’m much better with my picking hand and suck at picking. I have a lot of trouble building up speed and improving my picking accuracy. It’s as if no matter how much time I dedicate to picking (even alternate picking) and making sure I’m following proper technique, my body won’t comply.
I’m sure most of this has to do with the chronic pain and arthritis I’ve been dealing with for over twenty years now (currently 41). My muscles, joints and ligaments basically seize up (like a motor running low on oil). Regardless of how little pressure I use and how many different picking angles I’ve tried, it’s as if my nerves just don’t want to move quickly (like how your hands feel in the cold). I suppose if I had to come up with words to best describe this sensation, they’d be: “tight, non lubricated, achy, lactic acid, carpel tunnel”. The same also happens when I type, draw or write.
Anyway, my intent is not to complain, but to see if maybe anyone reading this has dealt with something similar. And if so, how you were able to minimize the tightness and discomfort, and improve your picking speed after years of having plateaued far too early and at a much lower bpm than most guitarists. Thanks to anyone willing to share some tips or experiences.
Very nice ! Like it !!!
Thanks for all the videos trying to help everyone, you’re appreciated Cam!
Feeling a little dry on knowledge, time to soak up some these ideas! And congrats on 80k Cam, u deserve it👍
Thanks good stuff!
Tasty sound! Very good video and guitar!🎸🤟🏼
Awesome mate..!
i've been wanting to learn hybrid picking recently. great timing my dude!
Glad I could help!
Awesome!
Another great video!
Perfect video, as I am a lefty with picking issues like some others in the comments. Didn't know so many other leftys played righty. I do miss half-step down tuning, but I can't put down this double locked down dark amber in standard.
you are a great player and you do great videos!!!! Nice guitar, I am also a big fan of Jake E Lee
Lol, watched one video, was wtf this kid...then at 2:11 slapped subscribe like some judge on America got talent 😊🤘 Super cool licks 👍 Thank you!
I live in a poor country but l like watching channal for you, you are may ldol,I'm from Vietnam
I was confused at first as people have different definitions of "hybrid picking". I always learned hybrid picking to be a combination of alternate picking and economy picking. Here you are using finger style picking in combination with alternate picking -- very interesting. Would take a long time to master...thanks for the video!
Combining alternate picking and economy picking doesn't really have a name but hybrid picking specifically involves using one or more fingers with a plectrum simultaneously. :)
Excellent
pictures of that guitar don't do it justice. What a beauty
So true
Thank you, Just subscribed :)
Cool lesson i like the technique videos
Did you say "that's what she said?"...lol! This is the best explanation for hybrid picking I've seen, thank you so much!
cool technique! I wish you were able to do the ghosted fretboard dots like Scott Paul Johnson does, makes learning so much easier!
Very cool indeed 👍
Your sound is very badlands sounding. Love it
Hey Matee!!!! High Five!
I'm Left Handed too but I play the guitar right handed too! I guess the extra dexterity in my left hand does help a lot !
You are a true badass my friend keep it up brother. 🤘
Nice!
your the man
Hybrid picking is a blast! In your experience, do you find that it also helps you keep timing better than economy picking (due to the hands feeling more like a pianist than a speed-bump-counter)?
very cool brother Cameron
Awesome lesson! Stuff I’ve been doing for years but nice to see a different take on picking styles to do it.
Edit: I should probably expand on my comment: I started guitar when I was around 10 (I’m 50 now and still shredding, don’t judge me lol), but also after 6 years of classical piano training (yeah, I was one of those annoying musical prodigy kids). So music theory was already in my DNA. My chording hand was ok, not my strongest suit on guitar, but what I did spend a CRAZY amount of time on because I loved it so much, was PICKING. So while others practiced solo patterns and chord progressions, I was practicing every known picking style out there… and what I lacked in finger dexterity on my fingerboard hand, I somehow compensated on my picking hand. Now, 40 years later, there is no solo or chord strum that I can’t do fairly well merely by over compensation on the picking hand. I will never be great at a lot of style because I’ve limited my fingerboard hand practicing but on the flip side, I am able to play super wonky rhythms and solos merely by crazy picking techniques. I may do a video series on what I mean someday if I’m ever inclined enough or bored enough to do it. Videos like yours are important for players to watch as it doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves.
💥 Zak Got That From. 🎸Billy Gibbons💥
Guitarra Linda!
great tips for a beginner like me
Sort of a cool take on travis picking
Great lesson Cameron. Going to be trying these. I have that exact guitar model as well but another color. Does this work for you with regularly clipped nails?
Cheers! It's more like regularly bit nails but yeah, it works fine
Cameron, Like the chordal thing at the end and like your channel here in the middle of
of United States, on an electric guitar my opinion is use every finger available.
Hybrid picking is where its at on electric and relaxing your right hand.
There are many many things you can do with hybrid playing that are impossible to do with a pick. I'm on the Country Music HWY in Eastern KY. and there are many a banjo bro!
Been playing music for 40 years it's great that you do "The King" (Sir Edward Van Halen RIP) so well.
Heard Wolf's song on FM rock station yesterday and teared up while driving at a red light..
Being an older player I love what you are doing bro...
Really kind comment thank you so much!! :)
@@CameronCooper Saw Van Halen in 1979 when there was festival seating. Me and my bandmates where right up front about 10 people back it was mind blowing when Eddie did his 30 minute solo! They were building human piramids standing on each other's shoulders and then falling into the crowd. My drummer, other guitar player and I left the concert with our minds blown! I wish I could visit UK and England cause there are good people there like you bro! Keep on rocking Cam!
im in the same position I'm a lefty playing on a right hander and I'm struggling with picking efficiently thx for the advice
That’s a dope guitar
the alternate hybird picking sounds like some Buckethead stuff!
as always, your playing is just 👀
That is so cool... I'm a lefty too but play the guitar right handed. The reason... I began back when I was 8 playing the violin in school. They would not allow me to play it left handed. Only right handed. When one is a member of an orchestra it requires uniformity. Everyone playing the same way... all the bows going the same way and such. Just FYI.
Loving your lessons more and more. Seriously considering reaching out for some Skype lessons. 🤔
Steve Morse is also left handed but plays a right handed guitar. I attended one of his guitar clinics a hundred years ago and he said the most logical thing ever... that you want your strong hand to do the fretting because it is by far the harder part... where as it used to be the easier part.. in the olden days you would hold a chord shape with your weak hand and finger pick the hell out of the strings with your strong hand... it's totally different today, and you've done it right. Cheers!
Cheers Steve! I'm actually ambidexterous oddly enough. My most nimble hand is my left and my strongest is my right
@@CameronCooper I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous 😀. It’s ok I’m old enough to make this joke 😂
That's what she said!
Oh my! I'm getting better already
My left hand is much slower than my right...its annoying, love these tips Cam 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Kiss guitarist Ace frehley used this hybrid picking on the kiss 1979 single I was made for loving you
Hi, Cam. Great lesson, as always. I recall you saying this particular DK24 was your favorite guitar (I think). Is that still the case?
Cheers! It's the amber DK24 FR which is my favourite.
I have a question. I recently got a charvel pro mod HSS sassafras guitar and so today I tried lowering the brigdge pick up cause it was too high for me. So when I did, I noticed that the pick up is slightly title and not inline with the strings and guitar. Is that common amongst other charvels ? or is something faulty?
That's a common thing in most guitars. Not a fault in my eyes. Some of my guitars are like that and they still sound great, don't worry about it :)
Very nice you play with gusto with technique beyond belief. Watching your Guitar Progress video I noticed you playing on the Edwards lp custom and I have been looking at the same model and the other japanese lp single cuts Burneys and Grecos anyway before I pull the trigger, what's your opinion on the Edwards? I've played around with the other Japanese-based guitar makers but never Edwards, how does it feel or better yet how does it compare to the Gibson Les Paul is the question?
Any information from you would be great, I shouldn't be asking you seeing that I gleamed lots from the video I just watched.. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You break it down nicely, well done!
Hi Phil, the Edwards aren't my guitars and not played them in a while but as a Les Paul copy they're amazing! If you were to blindfold me, I would think I was playing a Gibson. If the white one I have been seen using on the channel had a Gibson badge on it, it would most likely retail for over £3,500. Great guitar! But since Les Pauls aren't the guitar for me and I don't look good with one, I never use them aha
Hey thanks man for the advice I appreciate the Japanese lawsuits and the legit models before and after. It's the attention to detail that grabbed my attention back in the eighties.
I'll be watching your videos to get out of the ruts that plaque my imagination thanks again!
lol thats what she said, clever! they do say that too!
Nice! As a player of nearly 40 years, I’m always looking for new ideas and methods to improve my picking hand techniques. I like your method of teaching where you don’t make it feel like a long mundane lesson, but rather just “hey, here’s this cool picking technique, and this is how I do it” straight to the point without all the extra BS.
Oh and Ozzy guitarists have always been the best of the best! (Well Except for the guy that’s on the new record, I won’t mention his name, but you know, the guy with the big top hat that used to play with a band that rhymes with Buns & Hoses ? . Yeah I’m still at a huge loss as to who made the decision (Sharon?) to allow this guy to TRY to fill a guitar God’s shoes, to which he fails miserably! Sorry for the rant, but he’s out of his league… nowhere near the same ballpark. I’ll take it all back and retract, if someone would prove me wrong and post an example of him playing something amazing for even a few seconds… I’ll wait
brent mason double stops 👊🏻
As always a great upload & really interesting lesson! As a leftie did you learn to play like that from the start and do you lament not playing the other way round? My daughter is left handed and I'm tempted to start teaching her as if she's right handed as it makes things a heck of a lot easier.
Thanks a lot! I got my first guitar and never thought about my lefthandedness. I just cracked on with learning what I enjoyed and never felt hindered. I certainly don't regret learning right handed because I can play the guitars I love and they're much more widly available. By nature, I am actually quite ambidexterous so I might actually have been able to learn it the other way too.
@@CameronCooper I think Eric Gales also frets with his primary hand and has the lightning fast legato technique - I think it definitely gives you guys a unique playing style. If you ever learn the with your other hand make sure to go full Michael Angelo Batio: massive 80s perm and a quad neck guitar 😂
@@CameronCooper Joe Perry is also left handed and plays right handed. A little side note, I hit the like and it went from999 to 1K. Congratulations on clearing 80K!
Gee might just grab the axe n try these tks man. Count me as a new subscriber
Cameron ist a nice Teatcher🎼🎸✨
Thank you Cameron 🎻🎶
Elliott Easton does tons of hybrid picking in his classic solos. He played in country bands before he was in the Cars.
that DK looks like its first time being played. How are you cleaning the maple fretboard?
I cleaned it with window cleaner and kitchen towel. Just to spite those who hate that all my guitars are filthy
Being left handed and playing right handed is awesome! Think Steve Morse... 😁
Loads of players are like that. We have the advantage aha
Which model guitar is this and do you suggest buying it ?
Bit of a late comment but have you got any experience with kramer barettas? I'm thinking of getting the baretta vintage for my birthday soon 😀
Kramers are okay from the ones I have tried but you get more guitar for your money with a Charvel.
Did I hear a that's what she said reference 🤣
Nice lesson by the way cam, brilliant !
It slipped out. And thank you!
@@CameronCooper It slipped out.. Thats what He said.
@@ParanormalResponse you got my other subtle joke as well damn!
First off... great lesson, thank you. On another note... I really like the Charvel line with the roasted maple necks, but I have read that some people are complaining about the neck warping and similar issues. Have you had an issues with the neck? Warping, flaking, smell, etc...?
Thanks! No complaints with the neck at all. Just a shame the lush smell of roasted maple fades after a lot of use.
@@CameronCooper Ok cool, thanks again.
