The Lick That Changed Everything (for Me)

- There are so many licks that have helped me advance over the years but none of them had the same effect as this one - in the style of Steve Vai. One of my biggest influences on the guitar. Finding out about him was the moment my guitar playing accelerated and took off. My favourite albums by him are Passion and Warfare (of course) and The Story of Light. :)
That’s a damn good Vai impression, dude!
Oh my god! Ben, fancy seeing you here! Thanks so much for getting in touch, I love your channel. 😀
Cameron Cooper well thankee kindly my man!!!
Ben Eller And You Know Who Taught Steve 🤔 Joe 💥 🎸💥
Yeah dude, I got the Vai vibe too!! 💯
Britain's Got Talent we have a winner!
movelater Haha Simon Cowell hates guitar players. ;)
@@CameronCooper because he can't play? 😁
what i like about this idea is that it helps you get out of the E minor pentatonic/aeolian thing many rock/metal players are stuck in.
Mainly because it’s mostly an E Major Pentatonic lick. 😉
Yes .. exactly.! U can branch off in so many different directions
That tone is a fkn eargasm
Nice playing Cameron, thanks for sharing.... I've really enjoyed seeing you grow as a person and as a guitarist over the past few years... Keep up the great work!
Outstanding playing, you make it look effortless.
You're a really good teacher. Really appreciate all your videos. Thank you.

We need more of that!!!!!!!....please!!!!!
Love your coarse tone, it's got a nice bite! Thanks for the video.
Nice job man you nailed the sound for sure.
superb song and tutorial - I enjoyed very much !
Omg whats so cool is after you run it a few times , im starting to be able to flow around the neck finding notes in E thats fits , so cool i can see how this will open doors around the whole fretboard, ive been stuck in minor pentonic for so long , so desperate to break free of same paterns and sounds
Great sounding and playing!!!
I have that same exact guitar! I love it!
Awesome lick. Thanks for sharing.
NEARLY 100K VIEWS! Can't believe the response of this video! :)
You are awesome on guitar! Cool lick as well. I love Vai!
Beautiful playing graceful yet hits hard. Live the pinch harmonics
OUTSTANDING! Definitely hear some George Lynch "Paris is Burning" in that lick! Great job dude!!
TY for sharing your knowledge. Your awesome
You are amazing ! I subscribed after 10 seconds.... basically you add the 2nd and you get that awesome Eadd9 arpeggio .....Love it!
Thank you thank you thank you so much! I’ve been trying to expand my finger work and this is so helpful! Your teaching is great! Also wanted to get into a little bit of neo-soul type playing! If you do any of that genre at all, a video would be soooo appreciated!!
that is a great lick, thank you! going to see Steve Vai tonight in Tel Aviv!
Dude your tone is filthy awesome. Nice
NICE MR. YOUNG MAN. KEEP UP YOUR GREAT PLAYING.
You are one hell of a good passionate player. Your dad deserves a huge damn hug and trip to wherever he wants to go , with you together. I taught my son too. But he kept going. Drumming 30 years I finally stopped and picked up guitar and keys more and just recently started learning leads. I've worked hard but have a long way to go. But seeing my son doing so well off the practice he put in makes me feel great. I hope all is well you both.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment. Really appreciate it. :)
Worthy indeed man. Killer chops man😎
Wonderfully executed

Loved this lick on the jemini vid eleven years ago! Good to see it back!
Man if I can learn this I’ll be so satisfied.. I will feel like I’ve gone to my next level. great video and teaching is clear soon as I get time to play tomorrow I’m gonna to take a leap and try.
Bruce Kelly Awesome Bruce! I hope this lick really helps you. 😀
Cameron Cooper hell yes finally had time to sit with guitar and I got it down so far up to the part where you end on low e 9th fret! What level would you say this is? Like if I can learn this what other types or level of song do you think is attainable that I might on my head thought wasn’t attainable until I found your video you were right this does improve speed opens eyes to fretboard more and gives you notes from all over to kind of
Hear what that area is like this was very helpful I’m sure everyone who watched this and was in the first few months of guitar was like ooohhh wow.
YayI learned the whole thing! But I could still never do it in d or another key you did lol .. got a lot to learn I guess. Now I’m working on the timing of this lick though. Again thanks for this video and I’ll be watching your others great player great guitar. Having little trouble with the 4d-7a hammer on pull off to 4a but for now I’m just picking each note til I can get the hammer on down I’m ok with pull offs and hammer ones til it’s to a different string.. but maybe I need to crank the amp up to maybe I’m not hearing the note well because of that.
At a point where I've hit yet another flight of stairs and refuse to climb. Haven't touched my guitar in over a week. I needed to see this.
Tonal Blasphemy I'm glad this video helped you. :)
5:12 “You pull of really hard”. So that’s your secret of strengthening your hands for these licks! Okay, I know...I know. That’s enough of my childish sarcastic remarks. Seriously though, VERY well played!
fantastic
Very nice!
Flawless!!
Beautiful cam, Vai my favourite guitarist of all time, I vere towards others, satchel, EVH Gary moore but I always come back to vai, pick out a you tube video of vai's windows to the soul by Van hadren it is beautiful.
As always Cameron, thank u!
You're welcome! Thanks very much! :)
Awesome!
Carmeron...I Can See You Don't Have a Law Degree... Bravo Well Done 💥 🎸💥
Good one...!!!👍
Cameron Cooper! I started to check out your videos this morning. The one thing I would and will say, that takes you leaps above the rest that are attempting to teach guitar, is that you actually FEEL what you are playing. No matter who's riffs or songs you are playing or showcasing, you are in the moment of the music, while so many others are just playing it.... Your method of teaching is outstanding young man! Please, keep up the good work!..... Lastly, are you in your own band? Own studio creating? I would like to see YOUR own music on here. If you do, please forgive my ignorance and point them out to me.... I am sure your own blues riffs would be killer!!!!! Looking forward to hearing much more from you!
Jim B Hi Jim! Thank you very much for your comments on my teaching I really appreciate it. Definitely one of the kindest comments I have received. If you check my recent videos you'll see that I have uploaded two demos of original tracks. I received some very positive feedback and I'd love to hear what you think. ;)
Wow man it sounds Huge!!!👽
Yeah Steve uses a lot of arpeggiated chords to start his build ups. They do sound amazing and create a good mood to build from.
Vai is not my cup of tea but i give him all the respect in the world for his skills especially his work with Frank Zappa. I've taught many young players over the years and i made a lot of mistakes early on by only teaching one style (my preferred) but i started to learn that whatever brings you to the game with passion is fine by me. So if a student wanted to learn Vai then I'd teach him or her how to start learning to play like him. I could never play Vai's style myself nor did i care to but i l found i loved it when my students came to each lesson very excited to show me what they had learned. Always remember that there are literally hundreds of styles to play and at the end of the day whatever helps your students love learning to play the guitar IS the correct way to teach. You've got many years of playing ahead of you so when a student comes to you wanting to play the blues, jazz, or any other style than your own it's okay even if you don't know how to play a certain style you can still teach them how to learn for themselves. Great video and always keep on learning no matter what
Bruceolee That's a really kind comment. I want to carry on teaching as much as I can. I think what's really important when learning the guitar is the student's understanding of the fretboard itself and how to get around it. And when learning it's about knowing how you learn best. Thank you so much. 😀
Very impressed bud
Very nice work..
Thanks so much :)
Are you a fan of Andy LaRocque?
Awww Steve Vai 😍😍😍
