    In this episode, we hear about the introduction of Rolex's Oyster case in the 1920s and the innovations that followed (like the Deep Sea Special and Sea-Dweller), the military's use of Rolex's water-resistant timepieces for their durability and accuracy, and more.

    Watchbox should definitely offer Mike's "uniform" in its gift shop.

    The Giants won last week. Mike and his outfit are back in Philly. Watchbox's resident polymath is guiding the conversation. We're almost back to normal, except for the Giants. Great show, guys.

      Nothing was better than Market Wrap with Mike. He was always back in Philly or in Connecticut and we always heard about the NY football Giants.

      Thank you, Thomas! We have more in the pipeline. I met with Mike this week to plan another inventory-driven show and a separate one that I'll be shooting with Jack regarding the most influential Rolex models.

    Another brilliant video from Tim and Mike. Thank you so much. I learnt a lot. Your commitment to high quality content like this is really appreciated. Do you drink the whiskey after the sessions is finished?

      Thanks Jonathan! It's actually water in tinted glasses so we don't get dry throats or need to stop the take for a drink. We shoot these videos too early in the day for malt liquor!

    Great discussion. I think many watch people under estimate the attraction of Rolex to women. Rolex are long term supporters of many women and their endeavours.
    Every time I am in my local AD there are women buying Rolex watches. The range of women's models/sizes is quite extensive.
    I think the whole side of the business seems not to be highlighted by many watch channels etc. Women are big buyers of Rolex and increasingly so.

    The 5512 is to the 6583 in the late 50's that the New Pelagos is to the BB58.

      One reason why "Rolex" generally doesn't appear on those watches. This year marks 100 years since Mussolini took power in Italy, and I'm pretty sure neither Rolex nor Panerai are going to mark the occasion.

    Didn't Panarai make the sandwich dials?

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews Рік тому +1

      For a period, Panerai did make the dials for its watches. I believe that later 3646 production models relied on Rolex for nearly the entire watch.

    Love the historical perspective gents. Both educational and entertaining. Rolex’s fascination with depth, speed, flying, exploring and racing seems to have guided their design language for their sports watches. They lost the space race, fell behind in auto racing, and shunned timing trains. The one area that they can say that they dominated in was/is in water sports. That Oyster case keeps paying dividends.

    Wish modern Rolex dive watches had as much dial text as the Rolex Deep Sea Special. Rolex history is a bit odd: A German founder by way of London? Not sure I follow.

    Didn't Rolex copy Blancpain's rotating bezel diver watch design?

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews Рік тому +2

      No. Rolex had watches with rotating timing bezels long before the FF, and the Sub was developed concurrently with the Blancpain. Rolex and Blancpain both developed rotating dive bezels independently in 1953. Unless I'm mistaken, the FF did have an advantage in that its bezel was unidirectional like a modern diver.

    I'll never understand where these guys get their assumptions. I know a lot of people who own a Yacht Master or YM 2. And they all either own a sailboat or motor yacht, or love sailing and watersports. Why people keep repeating over and over that wearers of these references don't have a boat or go near water is mind boggling. Pure ignorance on display....the Yacht Master line appeals to a certain kind of person. That's the truth of the matter.

      I know over 10 people who own one them. None of them sail. That’s not enough to make a conclusion, it’s an anecdote but I suspect that it is the minority who do.
