NOT FORMING RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE WATCH COMMUNITY
A couple of these points are a bit contentious for me:
“ Settling for a Rolex you don’t want”
The buyer doesn’t control what they want without sizeable cashflow and considerable investment in the brand and even then they cant always get what they want, sometimes you just take whats available to you if you like it.
“Not forming relationships within the community”
Okay for me this is one big pile of garbage. The dealer/customer “relationship” is based on one thing and one thing alone, MONEY.
The “relationship” is formed by a customer going in regularly and buying anything to increase a purchase history perhaps with the same rep, this creates the “relationship” that dealers want and make no mistake about it.
You wont get that Daytona from a dealer based on your personal interaction with a Sales Rep no matter how good your chat is, the colour of your money is the language Rolex speaks.
Still have my 1st Rolex from 1990 and many more, GS, Zenith, Omegas and Tudors, never sold one of them, and never will. My kids will get it all, just as it should be 🙂
You’re a wise man
1. buy over retail
2. lock them in a safe
3. buy cause u wanna fit in
4. buy from a filthy flipper
5. be a dick/fake to your AD
6. buy over retail
How can I think for myself when these guys keep talking about the same watches?
why? if you really like the watch and can afford it then who cares what you pay for it.
Best advice yet
Splish splashing in the tub with my new subby I got last week..,...from the AD.......after a 3 week wait!
Preach. It’s amazing how the people are treating little machines as investment,
In 1974 i bought a Two Tone Datejust with silver linen dial for $350 a few years back i was offered $1,500 and thought maybe now is a good time to sell , today it's selling for 5,000 or more keep your watches .
It is up to each collector to determine what brand & models to collect. If you buy the watch you want to wear, wear it as long as it gives you enjoyment, and don't buy because of the hype on UA-cam, then you can't go wrong. Variety is the spice of life that makes the world go round! The new age truth that I think Mike really wanted to say but didn't, is that grey market dealers like The WatchBox are the new ADs! WatchBox offers a huge variety of brands and models to appeal to almost every collector, and the inventory changes on an almost daily basis. I can't wait to visit a WatchBox Boutique in the US this year.
Great tips Tim and Mike.
Watch collecting is a hobby not necessarily an investment motion.
Best,
Amintas
I really enjoy this show! Best regards from Brazil 🇧🇷
You guys are absolutely spot on with these points. It's unfortunate that so many people get caught up in the money conversation. You should buy the watch because you love it and connect with it not for what it's going to be worth. I'd also add that buying a luxury watch should be about impressing yourself and not others.
Brilliant episode guys with very sound sage advice. 👏🙏🥃
Really enjoy these Tim and Mike videos. Tim is the best at presentation and showmanship, and Mike is the best at having insightful things to say.
I hope to see both of you at watchtime ny this year. I saw Mike but missed Tim.
I started out of the gate big with my first purchase a grey market new platinum Daytona purchased in early 2015 for about £34k...since then I have added older Rolex gmts and submariners...love my Daytona and where it often
I’ve never made a mistake with Tim Mosso and Mike Manjos
good conversation guys. ~ JDS/CT
ABSOLUTE wisdom..... markets go up and down, buy the watch you want to WEAR... and that way, you can never go wrong!
It would help a great deal if the market could go back to healthier levels. The supply shortage is creating artificial demand, and the current values attract the wrong kind of people who have nothing to do with watch collectors. This vicious circle has to come to an end.
Bring back market wrap!
Someone better not grab my wrist tho
I miss Market Wrap!
A watch reseller telling me that the return on investment of a Rolex watch isn't financial is funny. I know whatchbox wants to buy extremely low and sell extremely high but c'mon. This comment is way too wacky in the reality of the watch world of today
Love those pictures in the background. Where can I buy these?
@@the1916companywatchreviews WB Lifestyle sounds great and I would be happy to be one of it's first customers.
@@thomasweingarten2725 Its the closest anyone will get to a real Rolex at Govberg!
ADs have professional models in stock. They keep them for interesting people. Always has been that way and still is. Even Joe Public has a shot now, if he asks for one of the less hot models, e.g. EXII
I wanted a Submariner date, because I watched it growing up in the 80s,90s. Since this was my first buy they wanted me to sell two tone sub like steel with date is extremly hard to get. I did wait for a year for a sub date, but on the date when I ordered I bought a date just for wife. Now Iam thinking of GMT to ad expand and build my collection.
#1 mistake: buying any Rolex, unless you are an insider with connections who can get one at the AD for list price.
or you could be smart and you bought a preowned Rolex before it was so fashionable and therefore paid a discount to list price.
@@timeisahumanconstruct9251 Okay, that’s nice… but what does a “smart” person do in 2022?
@@LaurenceJanus one should what for the impending global economic crash
I owe several Rolexes, omegas, JLCs, and many more Seiko’s. I bought them all without much fuss about waiting for the inventory or trying so hard building relationships with ADs. I once read a book that says poor people talk about brand names (often the founders’ names), while wealthy build their own brands. If buying lux watches feels like buying a nice jacket or a pair of nice shoes, you truly can afford the watches. You need not chase the trend or temporary market euphoria. Otherwise, you are trying too hard.
Nice insight.
Mike is back! But the question remains: is he back in Philly or in Connecticut?
Where ever he is, he finally has his grail, the gmt meteorite!
@@timeisahumanconstruct9251 did not know that. I’ve been waiting for the white gold gmt Pepsi for over 2 years from my local AD.
So agree on #6- the importance of building a relationship with your AD, and being friendly
Agree with buying and holding to enjoy, but so many have bought the rise not loving the watch but thinking they could make big $$$ short term. Their "love" of Rolex will disappear as quickly as this still heavily overheated market.
the problem is nth! (unless u are willing to pay 2x, 3x)
The reality of all this is… if you are a common person don’t watch this video because Rolex will not sell you anything. If you are a collector and have a good AD relationship buy what they offer. If you are a celebrity, sports, movies, politics etc. you don’t have a problem ask which watch you need Rolex will provide.
I don’t know if you can call yourself a watch collector only collecting Rolex. It‘ s just like you call yourself a record collector just having records of ZZ Top.
I have never had any desire to be called or considered to be a “watch collector”. Is that like a “Stamp Collector” or “Coin Collector”? I envision them constantly buying and selling to make their “Collection” what they want. (And that’s fine). I buy a watch to wear. If I were a watch “Collector” (like coins or stamps) it would seem that at some point it would be reasonable to have multiple Brands of watches. If you don’t “Collect”, but only buy to wear, and it turns out what you like to wear watches from the same brand, then that’s you. (And that’s ok too)

Don’t panic sell and buy more Rolex and FP Journe from The Watchbox.
Christ I hate flippers. They ruin it for everyone. They make it impossible for anyone else to enjoy what they truly want to spend their hard earned dollars on.
the problem for me with the hold the price will come back is
a, that assumes nothing changes with regards desirability. Always a risk
b, a brand new Daytona now might be 5 years old when the market reaches 50k again but only for a 2027 Daytona. a five year old Daytona may never reach 50k again. then factor in inflation and it's possibly even worse..
I'm big into old motorcycles and everyone assumed they would just keep going up year on year. but they have peaked as the market has moved on. only a few select models have proven a long-term investment. with the advent of electric vehicles I strongly suspect Ferrari et al will go the same way over the next decade or so...
lol Trust me Daytona steel watches will be over 100k in 2027. dont compare motorcycles to Luxury watches (art). just look at history prices on watches over 50years
I still do not understand why you have to prove you are a worthy of any product before they sell to you "and you only". I do like couple pieces from Rolex but having to essentially beg and AD to "put you on the list" and even being humiliated (couldn't think of a better word) by being made to buy some other piece before you "deserve" the one you really want is beyond me.
Rolex has become the lemming brand. Ask your friend why she/he bought another brand and compare that answer with your Rolex fan. Now, ask them what about that movement or design “hooked” them. “Uhh, cuz…it’s my Roly!”
I justify most of my our ashes over a 30 year timeline … pretty much everything’s affordable🤣. Just kidding, point taken.
No sunglasses!? This man is an imposter.
Tudor big block baby

So easy to fall into this talking from experience. Self restraint is key but Rolex don’t make it easy 😂
The first mistake is collecting Rolexes to begin with. I accept that to be a serious watch collector, you need at least 1 rolex, due to it's significance of influence and pop culture. But they aren't art pieces. They really aren't that special, and they really have no flex value, at least not in my eyes.
The first mistake is buying a Rolex without having it properly authenticated.
Is he back in Philly? Hopefully he says somwthing relatable, something about football for example. Stay relatable bois! Woo!
No back in Philly, no Giants but still cannot pronounce Jaeger correctly, so it is undoubtedly Manjos!
I see what you did here with the "don't settle" spiel, cause you want disillusioned punters to come to your place to spend a hefty premium to get what they want, clever tactic. The days as a first time customer could walk in and choose whatever he wanted is long gone. You can request for a model line you want but don't expect to get the exact model you desire. If the AD calls you, just say yes please and buy whatever they can offer you, that's how you build a relationship. Down the line you may finally get your grail watch if you're a persistent good customer., and remember this: the AD gives you their watch plus a wad full of cash every time you walk out with a Rolex, so be grateful for whatever you receive.
Not buying Rolex anymore. Fed up with ADs and Rolex treating Rolex owners like dirt. And not buying twice the price from grey market resellers acting like
drug traffickers.
Myth Buster #1: Get over spending big money on your first watch. Never in the entire history of the world have you not been able to buy a watch that you want until very recent times in a post-pandemic world. Do not believe these snake oil salesmen. This time will soon pass, once consumer spending patterns return to a state of normalcy ( in the not so distance future), you will find any Rolex you want from the AD or boutique at list. Patience is the long game, don’t buy into this non-sense watch dealers are promoting.
Tim post haircut 💇♂️ 😁
Pre or post haircut looks the same.
Agree with everything except the last point. Don’t need/want to kiss some guys ass to get a hunk of metal. Do I want to know them and at least have a small relationship? Sure, but no more than any other casual acquaintance I know. Also have to consider most ADs are not as knowledgeable and passionate as you guys. Most of the people I’ve met at ADs don’t particularly care for the product or know it well. I run circles around them in terms of info/knowledge.
Not every man is comfortable wearing pink and baby blue. Respect due
but that is not red, it's pink.......but he owns it!!
Are sales of Rolex falling off? Prices going down? This talk makes me apprehensive about buying Rolex right now.
Go to any AD around the world ask for a Rolex and you’ll see for yourself if their sales are falling off
Found the flipper
@@omarion07 Picked up Datejust from 1994 at an auction this week for 2200GBP, box & papers. Saw Steel Daytonas selling for 23-25K, back to prices from 2020. So just wondering what is going on as marketing pitch in this video is screeching...
No way. A watch is jewelry. The $50k Daytona goes back to $50k. Don’t bet on it. Watches typically go to 50% of retail. They aren’t for making money. The Ferrari reference is ridiculous Tim. There was a time when a Ferrari Daytona was 200, then it went to a million, THEN it went back down! Especially with Rolex, they are NOT limited like a Ferrari
Biggest mistake buying a rolex; not buying an Omega
👍🥂
Jesus Christ nothing triggers trolls more than the word “Rolex”… they’re attracted to it like flies on shît.
Myth #5: My kids will love and wear the watch that I pass down. This is completely false. Although there are rarely exceptions to the rule, I do not see young people today wearing old Pop’s watch. The styles and trends change, they’re vintage and are difficult to service correctly from a population slowly dying off, or most young people simply do not care at all. Also, if it was something nice, nobody wants to be that ostentatious person wearing something loud, nor risk getting mugged for wearing it. Case in point, I don’t know any young people on the Watchbox, nor Hodinkee wearing their old man’s watch!
Buy the Rolex that no else is buying. Go for a Cellini.
But its still a Rolex
@@BobbyDazzler888 Man, you deep.
You buy the Rolex at the boutique. The minute the warranty runs out, they won't sell you any part, or your reasonably priced Watchrepairer. Ironic I will only consider a Bubbleback. The modern watches are overpriced cnc spit out watches. Don't overlook gold watches. Modern Rolexes will eventually go way down in price, but you will have gold melt value.
the #1 mistake is getting a rolex in the first place
Whole lot of nothing.
Dont believe the hype.
