If Graham has not seen "The Night of the Doctor", he needs to right now. Perhaps the best 7 minutes of doctor who there is. Such a good blend of old and new who, and all on UA-cam.
The art for the Eighth Doctor isn't actually from his TV special it's from his brief appearance in The Day of the Doctor right before he regenerates into the War Doctor to end the war between the time Lords and the Daleks.
@@DraconicWFI generally didn't mind Moff's run as much as others, and had a lot harder time with RTDs modern pop culture references that never age well. But I'm doing a rewatch and genuinely enjoying a lot of stuff that bothered me, so I just think me from ten years ago didn't have enough to worry about and got mad about TV more haha
I honestly think Capaldi's third season is as good as the show's been during the revival era, and I think it's a shame that so many people had bailed out by then. Nardole and Bill are great companions, and the Doctor as a slightly burned out ex-punk uni lecturer fits Capaldi way more than the neo-Pertwee vibe Moffat clearly intended early on.
@DraconicWF say what you will about Moffat as showrunner, he is one of the best writers NuWho has had. Soo many episodes that hit as quintessential doctor who episodes have Moffat as a wring credit. Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Blink, Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, and that's not mentioning any Smith or Capaldi episodes, where I think he did some of his best work, like Eleventh Hour, Heaven Sent, Day of the Doctor, Time of the Doctor, and I could go on.
I've had a lot of trouble getting in to Jodie Whittaker's run, which really bums me out since I absolutely adore basically every line she says. A note on the Family of Blood (discussed at 25:00). They absolutely could have been killed prior to the end of that story; the doctor decided to hide because they had very little of their natural life span left, and he really wasn't in the mood to be committing any more atrocities. Around 28:30. The card that you're looking for is Grasp of fate. The flavor text is “And I suppose, if it’s one last chance to say it, Rose Tyler…” Around 1:07:00 I'm sure graham has found out by now, but the regular printing of Cyberman Patrol uses an older look for the cybermen
The Eight Doctor is also on point in terms of flavor. Eight lost his memory briefly in the movie (milling cards) and regained them later. But as Graham mentioned, Eight has a big and long history in the Audio Dramas and a long book series. It became kind of a running joke that Eight has temporary amnesia a lot, which I feel like his card captures very well, even though I don't believe they were able to use this part of the IP, just the stuff aired by the BBC
Using stuff from other stuff to make game rules probably would be pretty safe, but I think you are on to something with why his art and flavour text is a reference to the short where he regenerates into the War Doctor... good catch!
The 8th doctor in particular is based on the short episode “Night of the Doctor” and the audio dramas during the time war (they technically don’t have the rights to the TV movie), and 8’s schtick during the war is that he refused to fight, doing his best to live up to the name “Doctor”. Hence the reanimator-like effect. Then he is mortally wounded and needs to regenerate, and asks the Sisterhood of Karn (who are not fans of the Colorless Planeswalker but instead a religious group of Time Lords) to regenerate into “a warrior” because he’s just fed up with the whole time war and plans on ending it. So he regenerates into the War Doctor, does some war crimes (“Doctor No More”) , and then regenerates into 9. This is why John Hurt doesn’t get a number, and why Eccleston’s Doctor suffers from PTSD (notably in “Dalek”)
@@gaz-l621to paraphrase Gavin from Twitter, there wasn't enough space and the audio stuff would've opened a rabbit hole of references. I don't exactly agree, but an 8th doctor companion was extremely low on the priorities since a very small fraction of fans will be impacted by the choice to not include one. It sucks, but it was never gonna happen.
@@gaz-l621personally I would have preferred Charley, but yea, they were name-dropped but they still decided more classic references were more important than a single 8th doctor companion.
I just finished Capaldi having dropped at the end of Smith, and I have to say Capaldi is my favorite doctor, you should definitely go back and check him out Graham.
I am really glad I wasn't the only one who had an almost visceral reaction to reading "when Ryan attacks" :P. Great review, looking forward to nicknames soon :).
The creativity of the pertwee era did not suffer at all due to the increase of earth episodes. Also it was partially budgetary but also the writers for 2 wrote the writers for 3 into a corner for having the doctor be stuck on earth.
God, i loved this episode because of it being a confluence of Graham reacting for a first time with the appropriate background knowledge and Wheeler being fresh to it all. Hope that theres another one with the rest of the cards!
My favourite "The thing that lets us do the thing" in Doctor Who is when the Master turns the TARDIS into a Paradox Machine. "But wouldnt that cause a paradox?" "yes, thats what the paradox machine is for"
Great episode! Some random nitpicks and trivia for the comment gods: -The family of blood aren't immortal, it's actually the opposite. They are extremely short lived but they absorb life force to extend their lives. They were trying to get to the Doctor because they knew the energy of a Time Lord would make them effectively immortal. The Doctor's punishments for them were kind of an evil genie style "oh you want to live forever, huh? Be careful what you wish for!" thing, where he granted them pseudo-immortality at the cost of their freedom. -An addition to the points about Donna: I'm pretty sure she wasn't supposed to be a companion at all. She was there for a one-off episode, and then didn't go with the Doctor, but their chemistry was so good that she got brought back in a later season as the companion. -One of my favorite quotes (from 11) describing the broken chameleon circuit: "Every time the TARDIS materializes in a new location, within the first nanosecond of landing, it analyzes its surroundings, calculates a twelve-dimensional data map of everything within a thousand mile radius, and determines which outer shell would blend in best with the environment. And then it disguises itself as a police telephone box from 1963." -The perception filter was first introduced (for DW at least) by the 10th Doctor. It is very similar to the "Somebody Else's Problem Field" from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and basically makes you not pay attention to the TARDIS because it probably isn't relevant to you on a subconscious level. -The Sonic Screwdriver does whatever the writer needs it to do EXCEPT work on wood. Also, the sonic has been doing plot contrivances since at least the third doctor, to the point that they stopped using it for a few doctors because it was too much of a crutch. -The Eighth Doctor card isn't depicting a scene from the movie. It is from a mini-sode they put out before the 50th anniversary showing his regeneration into the War Doctor. This version of 8 is in the middle of the Time War. -While, as I understand it, not completely mended, the rift between Eccleston and Doctor Who has actually since healed enough that he has started doing audio-content and it is probably why he was able to get a card. -The Fugitive Doctor is from an arc from 13 where we learn that the Doctor was secretly the first Time Lord with infinite regenerations and a black-ops agent for Gallifrey before getting their mind wiped and turning into the First Doctor. 13 meets this pre-mind-wipe version of the Doctor, and all in all it kind of contradicts everything previously established about the setting (even more than usual) and undercuts the Doctor's character a bit, so it is very unpopular. It also happens to be an extension of a fan theory from the classic era that a young Chris Chibnall (the showrunner for 13) wrote many angry letters to the BBC in support of, which has gotten him a lot of flack.
I think the 8th Doctor movie didn't make it to the decks, but 8th still can appear because of his regeneration (the moment after the one depicted on his card) into The War Doctor in the 50th anniversary minisode "The Night of the Doctor"
The first episode of the revival really set the tone of the series for new fans, and does it's job as a jumping on point perfectly. Evil store mannequins are coming to kill you, exactly as campy as it needed to be!
13: 20 The weird thing about all the fake Mona Lisas is that just being on canvas should have been enough of a clue, as the actual Mona Lisa is painted on a wood panel.
Funny meme deck coined by Gavin Verhey himself: The War Doctor + Ryan Sinclair and 98 lands. Cast Ryan Sinclair, pass. Cast The War Doctor, then attack with Ryan. Ryan will exile your library, and assuming you kept a hand of 7 and drew one card a turn since the beginning of the game, put 87 time counters on The War Doctor. Next turn, you can blast someone for 87 damage using The War Doctor's triggered ability.
The Third Doctor is intensely more rough and tumble than the First and Second, and the art is incredibly appropriate seeing as it's from The Sea Devils, just as he has a sword fight with The Master (which is only halfway through that serial so not even close to the climax).
The release notes for blink are great. To quote: "People often assume that Sagas are a strict progression from top to bottom, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey . . . stuff. That is, the rules support chapter abilities that appear to be out of order, like those on Blink. The first ability triggers when the first and third lore counters are added. The last ability triggers when the second and fourth lore counters are placed on it."

There are some really interesting design elements to these cards, completely aside from the flavour wins, there are some interesting spaces to build or tweak decks.
Never cared for the Who series. It was just that show that was on every Sunday and just sorted skipped over. Felt even too nerdy for me lol. But hey, I'll listen to whatever you say on TTC. :^)
I left Magic in 2017 in part because I didn't like where the gameplay was going - The goofy changes, the constant new card bans. It just wasn't fun. Even when the game returned to the plane that got me into magic - Theros - I was tempted but still didn't play. This....may have me at least come back as a casual player again. The flavor wins. The play lines. all of it is just impeccably well done.
I sometimes wonder what Jodie Whittaker's run on Doctor Who would've been like had they had a showrunner who actually cared more about the franchise than Chris Chibnall.
Tennant's saga is actually the girl in the fireplace. Blink is in the villain deck. And while there isn't a saga for the impossible planet we did get a card for it, The Beast, Deathless Prince

This is mainly because the rights to the TV Movie are murky at best, and held not solely by the BBC.
Um Actually is from the night of the doctor, a short prequel to the day of the doctor that shows the events you described
Capaldi absolutely carried his era. Some of the best monologues in the series, along with arguably the best episode of the series in Heaven Sent.

that was so good.
Doctor Who rewatch podcast when?
Jace has enormous ears
I left Magic in 2017 in part because I didn't like where the gameplay was going - The goofy changes, the constant new card bans. It just wasn't fun. Even when the game returned to the plane that got me into magic - Theros - I was tempted but still didn't play. This....may have me at least come back as a casual player again. The flavor wins. The play lines. all of it is just impeccably well done.

Do a second look. There's so much missing.

Witiker may not have been the best writing, but I did like how it was very lgbtq+. I should find the season 2 episodes.
I sometimes wonder what Jodie Whittaker's run on Doctor Who would've been like had they had a showrunner who actually cared more about the franchise than Chris Chibnall.
I think Chris did care, his strengths just didn't work well as show runner and his methods ultimately hurt more than helped.
Really, Graham? The umbrella was the most memorable part of the Sixth Doctor's outfit? The umbrella. Really. ... okay...
I'm so shocked Tennant is the angels and not the impossible planet/the satan pit. Maybe I don't know what the fans actually like though
Tennant's saga is actually the girl in the fireplace. Blink is in the villain deck. And while there isn't a saga for the impossible planet we did get a card for it, The Beast, Deathless Prince
