Just off the top of my head Oil/Gas industry, Barista, IT, Ski instructor and as a kid he tore another kid's ear off with a hockey stick. Man's multifaceted.
I feel like Kathleen and Cameron may have both mentioned working in the field as well, or at least tangential to it before? It's a pretty large industry (and larger at the time I'm sure)
Unironically love both 'Scryfall Roulette' and 'Stump the Experts' episodes. It's so much more fun/engaging than I would have expected, but each time I enjoy them more and more.
Here's something to do with Eye of Singularity: Play it with Dual Nature, a 4GG enchantment from Prophecy that says whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield, it's controller makes a token copy of it. Whenever a nontoken creature leaves the battlefield, exile all tokens with the same name as it. and when dual nature leaves the battlefield, exile all tokens created with it. With both of them in play, new creatures just don't get to exist.
Internet points to you, my friend! That is the jankiest, most Johnny-type random combo I have heard in a long time. Bring that to your local commander game an revel in your playgroups confusion.
I loved the conversation about the old solo-play challenges like Garruk and the Hydra lol. I’m a newer MTG player(started with Theros Beyond Death) but I remember watching Friday Nights and learning about those game modes and thinking they were really cool and interesting. I definitely remember the feeling of wishing I had gotten into Magic sooner lol
I’d say Time Spiral block has Alara beat in terms of innovation. It introduced both a special slot in packs and unique themed borders, something we get in every set now. It introduced Delve, has the first mention of Planeswalkers, was the first set to keyword Deathtouch, Lifelink, Reach, and Shroud. And it also did colored Artifacts before Alara, Sarcomite Myr. It also introduced Colorless non-artifacts, and while Scry wouldn’t be evergreen for awhile, it was the first time Scry had been used with that frequency that we see today.
Old man here that remembers old TTC and Ask A Judge! great segement! Loving Scryfall!! Its like everything I liked with crack a pack but less chaff cards. Gonna go back and hit some more of these now thanks guys
Multi-player magic was popular at this time, there just were not usually special rules people used for it so it was just magic but with more people. Also the 3 color guilds already existed long before Alara they were just called different things.
As a native Red Deerian who has moved back home after many years abroad, I've been pleasantly surprised to find great new places and groups for Magic here. Things do change, so come by sometime and give it another look.
I remember having a ton of fun playing standard during the Lorwyn/Alara time. I also was at a low-powered enough local environment that I wasn't running into Faeries or 5c control all that often.
I left a comment on the last Canlander FNPF about how I loved Wheeler and Robin talking about the old days of Canlander and just chatting while shuffling and how I want more content like that. "Tap Tap 100" Scryfall Roulette Edition is exactly that.
Shards of Alara got me back into Magic. My Naya deck is still my baby. Happy to hear some praise for that set, even if it didnt play super well. The flavor and world feel was on point. Really hope we go back some day
Under the original legend rule, you COULD cast a legendary if one of the same name is in play, it (the new one) would just be destroyed immediately. Clone would work the same way.
Seriously wondering: Should Commander bring back mana burn? Feels like that would attach a significant but not overwhelming cost to some rather dominant green/artifact ramp strategies... Guess I'll have to pester my playgroup to try this^^
I still have a text file that allows me to play solitaire Magic. The opponent is a list with dice rolls that gradually become more imposing so that you have to actually make an effort to win against it. I should play that format again. It was kind of fun.
So one thing Alara Block should get credit for and doesn't is that it was the first time that I know of where we had a Proto-Commander format officially pushed by WotC. In the fat pack boxes for either Alara Reborn or Conflux, they suggested playing a five way match where each person can only use cards in their Shard in their deck and then you tried to take out the two people across from you, while the person to your left and right were kind of allies because they also wanted one of your direct opponents dead. Never actually got to play it because my playgroup was only 4 people, but it could still be a fun time at some point for LRR to do.
To touch on that super brief scheme card we saw, I wonder if Archenemy could be worked to show up as a Monarch style effect in some future commander set. No idea what it would look like or how it would function, but it sounds neat.
I think they’ll do Archenemy cards with a set of commander precons, like what they did with Planechase this year. A little disappointed we didn’t get Archenemy: Elesh Norn with Phyrexia this year.
Garruk, Apex Predator sticks out as a Magic card to me because I was pulled in by M15's marketing campaign, I remember getting a Starter deck but I was too poor and knew nothing about my local scene to even think about playing!
To answer Serge, they’ve made cards templated to function in multiplayer since OG Legends. Just because EDH didn’t exist didn’t mean they didn’t consider multiplayer.
So I actually have a memory of Phyrexian Metamorph. In a large commander game I was against a whole host of decks around 2016 including a Sliver Overlord. He plays Overlord, passes, and I play Metamorph, copy his overlord, activate its second effect and steal his, sac mine to the legend rule. Dude concedes on the spot around turn 4-5.
About the spell Rebound. Are there any self targeting spells that deal you massive amounts of damage or make you lose the game on the next turn? This might work as a kill combo spell. I mean there are ways to give bad creatures to opposing players so why not give them bad spell effects too?
@@RLKC8 What about something that says something like ''target oponent takes 5 damage you lose the game the next turn''? Would that work with rebound? I mean a card of this type? Where you do something to an oponent but something bad happens to you. Will that swap the effects? You take 5 damage and the oponent loses the game instead? I am not sure if a card like this exists so i am just speculating.
Rebound doesn't change the owner of the spell, so you would still lose the game if you redirected it. There is a similar deck that relies on Sudden Substitution to exchange ownership of cards like Pact of Negation.
So, y'all are misremembering the old legend rule (it's pretty common that people understand it this way) - here's the text from the Fourth Edition rulebook: "Legends are considered creatures except that there may be only one legend of the same name in play at a time. If a second legend of the same name is brought into play, it's immediately buried. If more than one legend of the same name is brought into play at the same time, all of them are buried." So you could play legendary permanents, they would just immediately be destroyed without the ability to regenerate them.
I'm lucky enough to be in these guys' wheelhouse in my community, except I'm literally the only one so I always make these references or pull old trivia out of my butt and all these millennials out here give me the crazy eye. I remember recently trying to tell them about how oppressive Jund was during Alara standard and pulling up evidence and still not be believed because all these youngsters only have 2020 Magic as reference points. What I'm trying to say is this vod makes me feel seen and I really appreciate it.
I love LRR, but I'm sad every time one of the guys from Alberta disparages my home province because their experiences while living there were negative. 😥 Sure, if they didn't find a place to belong and be happy in the prevailing culture or industries, then I'm glad they all moved to a place where they found the life they want. 🥰 I just wish they'd stop making it sound as though JUST LIVING in Alberta is miserable. The Red Deer comments really hurt and prompted me to write this comment, as it's my hometown and I was happy growing up here. ✌ P.S. Happy Pride Month all
*crew pops off about classic Juggernaut*....*Flashback to Shevam on TTC a few years ago saying how this art was so racist it makes his blood boil* ... that's a big oof pal.
Late to the comment but I looked it up, Shivam says thst Juggernaut is reductive and racist and to his credit the why of why he thinks this is sound. However what is a bit reductive of his statement is that he closely connects it to the Indian root of what Juggernaut or rather Jagannath means. The word Juggernaut is in English since the 13th century and got its own meaning which arguably can be seen as either totally racist since it is a misconception of what actually happened in India or as its own thing that grew out of legends. Personally I find both a bit reductive and think we should be able to interpret it either way. Also with a word that has ober 700 years of history it is a bit strange to say it didn't create a history of its own.
I like Scryfall Roulette episodes, they're the Magic equivalent of a sports podcast doing a "Let's Remember Some Guys" episode.
Can I recommend "Shivam and Wheeler Love Magic"? Literally Shivam and Wheeler talking about cards they love from every Magic set
Wheeler’s memory is waning as I definitely have a “lands in the front party in the back” button
Genuinely made a CK order to try to get that button and was devastated to not receive it. Reprint lands in front, party in the back!
This is a weird theme for a north 100 episode but im here for it
I swear, every time I learn more about Serge I’m left more confused than I started. He worked in Oil/Gas? What?
Every time Serge says "I used to work as a..." it always ends with something different than I've heard before.
Just off the top of my head Oil/Gas industry, Barista, IT, Ski instructor and as a kid he tore another kid's ear off with a hockey stick. Man's multifaceted.
Living embodiment of the “you don’t know how much violence it took for me to become this gentle” quote
I feel like Kathleen and Cameron may have both mentioned working in the field as well, or at least tangential to it before? It's a pretty large industry (and larger at the time I'm sure)
Although, "I'm sad and living in Red Deer" is redundant.
Unironically love both 'Scryfall Roulette' and 'Stump the Experts' episodes. It's so much more fun/engaging than I would have expected, but each time I enjoy them more and more.

Eye of Singularity *IS* actually pretty good in commander, it's a hoser card against treasures and tokens.
Can we just get more hour+ long podcasts with Wheeler, Serge, and Nelson talking about magic cards or MTG in general? Please? Pretty Please!?!?
Probably my favorite topic, either this or Stump the Expert

Love a good Tap Tap 100 episode
This is my favorite North North Concede episode
As someone who used to live in Red Deer, and knows the LGS's there (and the ones no longer there), I'm so sorry, Serge
As a native Red Deerian who has moved back home after many years abroad, I've been pleasantly surprised to find great new places and groups for Magic here. Things do change, so come by sometime and give it another look.
I love these! Your guys' knowledge of cards is pretty amazing every time.
Enjoyed another Scryfall Roulette! Keep ‘em comin’ fellas!
I remember having a ton of fun playing standard during the Lorwyn/Alara time. I also was at a low-powered enough local environment that I wasn't running into Faeries or 5c control all that often.
Now Bestial Menace would have given all of those creatures keywords at least
Love all the fond reminiscence. Favourite episode in a long time.
Love these TTC's!!! Most those cards discussed I've come across in my bulk cards.
Love the Wheeler!
Also, Serge, do tell us more of those "oil and gas" days. 😄
Scry'm ready to Fall in love with this episode. Platonically of course.
Nice to see more North100 content on this channel!
I left a comment on the last Canlander FNPF about how I loved Wheeler and Robin talking about the old days of Canlander and just chatting while shuffling and how I want more content like that. "Tap Tap 100" Scryfall Roulette Edition is exactly that.

I love Eye of Singularity in commander. It doesn't specify non-token, so it prevents people from sand-bagging treasures, or amassing token armies.
Under the original legend rule, you COULD cast a legendary if one of the same name is in play, it (the new one) would just be destroyed immediately. Clone would work the same way.
Yeah the original legend rule was "first one wins," then it became "nobody wins," and now it's "legends for everybody!".
Yeah you are mentioning the second legend rule, rather than the original
I think Nelly was in the Friday Nights episodes for Theroes where Kathleen did the Heros Path for the original Theros block.
Yes, I recall it distinctly.
with the North 100 boys taking over, i hope there's an upcoming N100 with Graham, Kathleen, and Cameron!
Seriously wondering: Should Commander bring back mana burn?
Feels like that would attach a significant but not overwhelming cost to some rather dominant green/artifact ramp strategies...
Guess I'll have to pester my playgroup to try this^^
that yurlok tho
Serge and I share a love of Modern Mill, and sometimes you do hold that crab back for value!
I still have a text file that allows me to play solitaire Magic. The opponent is a list with dice rolls that gradually become more imposing so that you have to actually make an effort to win against it. I should play that format again. It was kind of fun.

We’ve had exactly 2 new Kithkin since Eventide. I really wish they were more common in Magic.
To touch on that super brief scheme card we saw, I wonder if Archenemy could be worked to show up as a Monarch style effect in some future commander set. No idea what it would look like or how it would function, but it sounds neat.
Maybe some kind of battle x planeswalker mixed with tempted by the ring and initiative
I _loved_ Alara limited. Didn't much care for Standard because of the absolute dominance of Jund, but draft was always fun and interesting.
To answer Serge, they’ve made cards templated to function in multiplayer since OG Legends. Just because EDH didn’t exist didn’t mean they didn’t consider multiplayer.
The last card was worth the wait, that was a great one.
Wow surge and I have both the same magic timeline
It took me way too long to realize this wasn't North 100

You could rebound someone trying to kill you with Damnable Pact?
If a spell can only target you, and legally can’t target an opponent, you can’t redirect that spell to an opponent
@@RLKC8 What about something that says something like ''target oponent takes 5 damage you lose the game the next turn''? Would that work with rebound? I mean a card of this type? @@moooseman3 Thanks, now i somewhat get how this works.
This is just north100 this episode
good episode

Eye of Singularity plus Spy Kit is a non-legendary creature boardwipe, so it's got that going for it
That intro must've been a complete nightmare to render. I'd expect it to be hell on compression but it looks so good.
Just made a mono white commander deck with kithkin tribal flavoring. would love to see your kithkin deck if availible.
Garruk, Apex Predator is actually the most monetarily valuable Garruk card, likely cuz he's from 2015 and has (effectively) never been reprinted
I started playing in Onslaught and new players make me feel older every year.
42:40 Serge when Alpha printing
I used your link and got a sticker, not a button. It said "Untap-Upkeep-Boardwipe" /shrug
Card Kingdom typically puts in some random stickers as well, the buttons unfortunately aren't always in stock so it's not guaranteed you'll get one
@@Paranundrox not a problem. I'm more than happy to support in any small way that I can :)
many cards I did not know
Y’all should just go ahead and do a set tier list. Curiously there don’t seem to be a lot of them out there.
I really want one that says button please
Gentlemen, may I bring up Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut... which turns all of your creatures into that OG juggernaut.

Ah yes, twobrid
Comet 🐕is favorite card.
Sees video audible gasp* yeee
I'm so glad wheeler shares my love of alara
where canlander?
please keep making these until you've done every card
At least Eye of Singularity hoses token decks in highlander formats
Hey wait a second this isn't North 100
Will this filler episode be the Fly episode of Breaking Bad
