    Can't stress enough how much of a difference the drive height adjustment can make; Can make a difference of the drive being able to boot only PS1 discs or both PS1 and PS2 as well as how fast it manages to do so. Along with how much or little noise it makes. In my experience there's a sweet spot where it's fast, reliable and rather quiet. The KHS-400C (Chinese knock-off) however seems to be pretty noisy no matter what.

    • @knerlington6904
      @knerlington6904 2 роки тому +1

      @@filevans Very easy to adjust. It's just a relatively small cog that you can turn clockwise or counter-clockwise. Problem is it's time consuming depending on how much you're comfortable with stripping the drive down while testing.

      Dang wish I had seen this comment before I tried to adjust the potentiometer on my 400B drive that was only reading PS1 discs. Now it reads no discs, hasn't for months. I just put a 400C in it today. I didn't understand why it wasn't reading anything before watching this video. Had no idea you had to flash new firmware for different model lasers in these things.

    I noticed when you opened the drive top I could see the laser cable looked worn, as if hit by the spinning disc over and over. Yet supposedly only the slims had that problem. I just bought a used slim from eBay and have already scratched one disc. That truly sucks. Not quite sure what to do. I used to have a fat model, but it was stolen. So I was going to give my PS2 games to my grandson along with a decent console. But I hate to think of ruining all my old pristine games. I wish there was a sure inexpensive fix.

    Dude thank you thank you thank you. I ordered the KHS400B laser since I have a SCPH-30001 model. I haven’t played this since Grand Theft Auto Vice City (my youngest brother played it for thousands of hours and the laser broke). I found the PS2 collecting dust so I took it apart and with your video, it works like new again. I sincerely appreciate you giving your advice to help fix these. May I suggest to make it easier for you and others, to unscrew the screws safely you’ll need a PH1 and PH000 for the backside and lid for the disc reader. That tiny screw on top of the laser was removed with a Torx T4. Thanks again for your help!

    I bought a refurbished PS2 with brand new lens (this exact one 400C) and my biggest issue is, if the disc is even slightly used specifically with Jak 1, 2 and 3. They all have issues before the main menu. Unless the disc is spotless from a new case, they don't want to work, yet in my 2002 Stock console from childhood, and an untouched PS2 slim, no issues. These lasers are either not as good as the stock versions or an adjustment didn't go right.

    I would not be surprised that all the KHS-400C laser lens modules you will find on ebay and other Ecommerce websites are all made in Shenzhen, China. Any major electronics company who have outsourced their manufacturing to China were most likely based and manufactured in Shenzhen due to its close proximity to Hong Kong given that it is a Special Administrative Region with access to foreign trade. Since Sony no longer supports the PS2, I would not be surprised if the Chinese Manufacturing firm that Sony outsourced its PS2 production to is still making them given how popular the PS2 was which is good news for us Retro Gamers.

Ordered another lens and it'll get a rewrite on the EEPROM to accept the lens (original is HD7, which is hard to find, the one I ordered is a Sony KHS-400C for the 50001 model, which is better than nothing).

    Got a "fat" SCPH-30001 that takes like 2 minutes to read the disc, I tried cleaning the laser but it did nothing. So I'm guessing I need to replace the laser. My main questions are:
    1. I have a really old soldering iron, from like the 1950s/1960s. It's so old it says "60 cycles" instead of "60Hz". Will this iron work?
    2. Also, when I had my PS2 apart, I adjusted the laser height gear (the white gear) and I'm not sure if I have it 100% in it's original factory position now. But I believe it's 99.99% near the original position (if it's off at all it's properly just a notch off). If I'm not in the original position, can this cause any problems?

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  3 роки тому

      For question one it is hard to say, but I would be more inclined to get a new temperature controlled soldering station. There is one made by a company called KSGER on Amazon and it is very good and also affordable.
      2. Regarding the gears, I think it is OK even if it is not in 100% the original position. The laser has a range of tolerance so even if you are off by a little bit it should still have no trouble with reading

    I’ve upgraded to the 400c in my fat ps2. However with the new laser it only reads music CDs, ps1 games and 5 of 30 of my ps2 DVD games and no Movie DVD. I’m thinking could it be the screw on the underside left one above where the solder is removed of the laser that needs turning clockwise a fraction? This according to another UA-camr adjusts the strength of the laser that reads DVD. Left one DVD laser strength, right one CD laser strength. Or is it just to do with that Lens changer needs running on it? That bit haven’t done yet as haven’t got MacBoot on a ps2 memory card.

    Very nice & informative video ... Many thanks for sharing, man ... I have an 30004R PS2, which is one of my fav consoles. Although the laser lens still works, someday it will need to be replaced. A couple of questions, if i may (my PS2 is "chipped", BTW, if it makes any difference): A) Does your method make calibrating the new laser unnecessary? Or i misunderstood? Because calibrating those suckers is a major PITA, plus needs special equipment e.t.c. B) If the original Laser fails, can anyone take the unit to a specialist, together with the chinese replacement lens, in order to "copy" the calibration parameters of the original lens to the replacement? Or the replacement unit needs to be calibrated onboard the console? Anyways, thanks in advance & sorry if i asked anything stupid above XD ... Cheers

    I have a 20 year old SCPH-30004R of my childhood, one of the most unreliable about laser. I bought the original Sony new old stock KHS400C, and tried for 3 days to adjust the screws for calibration. There was no way to get satisfactory results. I was able to achieve perfect reading of single layer DVD5 games, or dual layer DVD9 games, both were impossible. The height of the laser for the two types of discs is totally opposite, higher for single layers and much much lower for dual layers, with no meeting point. At this point i think there is some other problem on the motherboard, or with some laser controller, i don't know. Now i think i'll take a model with a more reliable laser.

    When I swapped the old sensor for the new one I forgot to move the screw on the front to the new one. I ran the lens changer on the FMCB memory card and it would read CD only and it was really really slow. DVD games would error. I took it apart again and realized the previously mentioned screw I missed and after that it read CDs instantly but still not DVDs. I ran the lens changer again and I adjusted the top right screw on the rail and after a few extremely minor turns to adjust height of the lens, it read a DVD game and instantly too. So now it’s fully restored. So for those having issues please just hook it up to a tv with the lid off and just keep making minor adjustments and of course be sure to have lens changer or else it won’t work at all

It seems the 50000 models are the ones I've seen with the corruption issue as well. What's interesting is it uses a different version of the eeprom chip called the "dragon". It has the same settings programmed, though, so I'm not sure where the issue lies. One of the tips he pointed out in this video is to save the lenschanger app onto your fmcb memory card before backing up the eeprom settings. This way, you don't mix it up with another consoles settings in case you are repairing multiple systems. I'd like to know more about the risks involved when rewriting the eeprom.

    Hey thanks a lot for this video! I’m trying to fix my SCPH-30001R that originally came with (I think) the KHS-400R. Right now, the worm screw does not move for me at all. The laser comes on, the disc spins, and the screen shows “loading disc” indefinitely (never get a read error message, just stays on “loading disc”).
    Does this sound like it needs a new laser assembly? Or might it actually be the worm screw motor that needs replacing?
    I’ve bought a McBoot memory card from China that I’m waiting on to get here just in case I need to replace the laser

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  3 роки тому +1

      So if I understand correctly, the laser doesn’t move up and down along the track? It spins but the laser stays in place? You can try adjusting the small black screw on the laser - if this screw is too tight then the laser can’t move on the rails. It might be the worm screw but it’s fairly uncommon for those to fail

    • @stephenmogensen4073
      @stephenmogensen4073 3 роки тому

      @Long Island Retro Gaming Yea not only did the laser not move at all, but looking at the worm screw when I inserted a disc, the worm screw itself was not moving at all. This repair actually became a lot more complicated on me last night unfortunately. Somehow in my repair efforts, the eject button and entire ejection mechanism stopped working on me altogether all of a sudden. In googling the issue, I found out that it could be a blown fuse. When more fully disassembling the PS2 to get to the motherboard to take a look, I noticed that the worm screw ribbon cable was disconnected. It's possible that I disconnected it accidentally during disassembly, but I'm thinking more likely it was already disconnected, and that would explain the behavior I was seeing. No idea how that could have happened though, it's super strange.
      Anyway, so now I can't test because of this new issue lol. It turns out that the PS11 fuse on my v5 board was indeed blown, so now I've got to solder a replacement for that component, reassemble the PS2 making sure all ribbon cables are reconnected properly, and hopefully it will finally be working! But it'll be a while before I can test that theory while I wait for this replacement component to take the slow journey over here from China.

    Okay, so I replaced the laser. Went smooth until I turned the console on and put in a disc. It won't even read it. I loaded up GTA:VC and it won't boot, won't even flash a "Reading Disc" or something. As I took a closer look by opening it up, it will spin the disc for a half a second only to stop, and then the PS2 menu loads. @@LIRetroGaming yes it did move up and down. It was making an electrical buzzing sound. And re-installed the original laser and that one is working just as it did before, only reading CDs and moving normally.
      I think I messed up the de-soldering. Used to much heat and pressure and I think I damaged the board when I was trying to remove the soldering point.
      I ordered a new laser and some desoldering braid, I read up on soldering and apparently it's not so easy, it's important to have the correct heat setting not above 370 degrees celcius and to use a desolder braid in between of the correct size, apply some heat on it the heat transfers down through melts the point and the point is absorbed by the braid, also should not keep the soldering iron for to long over the board so not to damage it.
