I hate this song and and have done since 82 . To me it it just signified the end of life as I knew it at 16. Never ever has there been a band that can influence so many people and bring them absolute joy like The Jam did. Still not over it 40 yrs later.
Hard to put into words how much I love this. I remember watching it go out live on Channel 4... my 10 year old mind was totally blown - we didn't have a video recorder so it was all about the moment.. It was years before I saw it again.. Far from my favourite Jam song but this live version just totally slays. As I get older the Jam mean more and more to me. I love the Beatles, Stones, Who, Smiths and countless other English bands - but for me personally the Jam are the greatest band ever.
Bizarrely, I was about to post, it's far from my favourite Jam track too, only it captures their swagger and energy. Sadly, too few decent videos of them. Love loads of bands, but Sound Effects and Setting Sons, will always, be in my top 5 albums. Timeless genius !
@@saphyhair5135 I think you come to love something musical at the time it is right for you. That wild rush of love of for a band/artists is so great. Enjoy it:)
Have to be one of if not the greatest 3 pieces in the history of music each one great but together amazing have to say Bruce was always my favourite phenomenal bassist
The greatest band of my little life. But the Jam made me feel BIG. What I owe this band can never be repaid....ever. Weller added so much more meaning to my life. No, really he did.
+leejoliver ....And an absolutely top bloke! Met him at the London Bass Guitar Show a few years ago, very approachable and got a signed poster from him :-D
@@tetedepoulet8651 Yeah... many people take Foxton's bass arrangements for granted... I think Weller did the right thing by breaking up The Jam if he felt like it was the genuine thing to do at that time but Foxton deserves all the praise that sometimes he doesn't get. He is the best bass player of the punk/post-punk era, a power trio simply doesn't sustain itself without a perfect bass player... it doesn't have the luxury to have a crappy bass player. Just watch Weller playing The Jam's songs nowadays: it's lifeless. His band is great playing tunes from The Style Council and his solo career but that's it... The Jam doesn't work without Foxton and Buckler and it deserves to be acknowledged. Weller was able to sing, experiment with his guitar and shine on The Jam because he had two excelent musicians maintaining it all.
This was bonfire night in '82 and the first Tube (and unfortunately the best they did!) Always thought when Weller sings '..lived to long in the shadows of sadness' and almost bowed out, that he meant it. Saw them in Poole on the 27th, emotional times...Glenn J
Yes, I remember it well. I set my tape recorder up in front of the telly and told my parents to stay out of the room for an hour. I wanted to shout and sing but couldn't as I wanted to record it. Went out that night to a bonfire on the estate and kept playing in on my ghetto blaster. I always thought it was a poor idea to start with Ghosts though. Difficult to get to velocity after that. And the program cut when Precious was into it's final swing.
One of the best songs ever don't make music like this today outstanding group the best around and still can give stunning performances brilliant Godbless to them love hugs and kisses foreverxxxx
We have went from this to the fuckin’ X-Factor!?! The world has been in steady decline for centuries, and now we are doomed, because we don’t have artists like this who care enough to speak truth to power. While this was a farewell song, they left behind a catalogue of anthems that endure. Not bad for three lads from Woking.
Paul Weller was the real deal. Someone who's talent far exceeded the hype. For me he made the right decision to end the jam when he did. Quitting while you are at the top is always the best way to go out. After all there is only one way to go from there. Like Bowie he needed to constantly reinvent himself to stay motivated.
The context of this is that they're splitting up something like 6 weeks later and they know it.... in some ways it's all the more astonishing because... why bother? Especially Buckler and Foxton....They have nothing to prove but everything to prove... It must have been painful to do this show. However from 1:37 on-wards when they hit the middle eight it just shifts up a gear.. and never gives up. It's a telepathic thing, but they TRANSCEND here. The gasp at the end from Foxton - out of breath..insane. ON LIVE TV! Unreal.. Never bettered IMO.
Always surprised that Bruce and Rick happy to sign this off as the last single rather than Solid Bond. Weller basically saying he has lost passion and unhappy with the band…maybe they didn’t have a choice. Fantastic live track and particularly like the spoken last outro verse…wake me with your amphetamine blast etc etc 💥
Wake me up with your amphetamine blast Take me by the collar, throw me out into the world Rock me gently and send me dreaming of something tender I was brought here to pay homage To the Beat Surrender
Great single, but this performance shows what an underrated vocalist Bruce Foxton is. His vocals are much strong than Paul Weller's on this performance.
Jeff Featherstone i totally disagree..Bruce is a great bassist and may have a good voice but definitely not better than Paul Weller's. Even as a solo artist, Mr. Weller has a powerful massive soulful voice that complements his personality & good looks!
Wake me up with your amphetamine blast Take me by the collar, throw me out into the world Rock me gently and send me dreaming of something tender I was brought here to pay homage To the Beat Surrender
You rarely see such passion these days
Gotta love Bruce... stomping and dancing round the stage and pumping out funky, fluid and joyous bass lines. What a star!
Agreed. Brilliant playing as always and incredible here. Looks the dapper chap too
Wingman
Absolutely the best foxton was the Man
Foxton was the bass beast.
A mate of mine met Bruce walking his dogs near his home last year. Had a chat, he still plays with Paul every now and again apparently.

I never realized how much Bruce Foxton really contributed with those vocals and amazing bass.
Bruce's vocals were underrated for sure absolute boss tune
Happy 40th Birthday to this sublime tune!! 🎁🎈
I’m now 54 and this still blows me away. 🧨🎤🎸🥁❤️
Bruce holds this one together, phenomenal bass and backing vocals
these three lads were soooo tight ,add a bit of brass and backing ,brilliant!

Agree. They spoke for a generation and inspired us, like no other. Fcukin love The Jam.
I get that totally, lots of punks ended up being what they said they hated, not Weller. And I write Coolest Guitarist Ever on all my Jam comments now.
this is the very definition of a 3 piece band ...perfection i'd say ...love to see them get together again
Unbelievably extraordinary performance and very bittersweet in their story. 3 wonderful musicians.
In another universe they stayed together and became the biggest band in the world and changed the face of music and created a better world ....
What a band! One of Britains All Time Best!
Sums my life up....thank you Paul for putting it into lyrics...god bless you👍❤
I remember dancing to this at my school disco in Stoke. Best band ever.
Such talent and passion! Love BF’s bass lines!
The best band ever how can 3 men make such a beautiful sound my youth in 3 minutes 😍
Bruce is fucking great on this. What an amazing band.
Broke my heart when they broke upStill my very favourite
Foxton was such a great bassist/musician/foil to Weller....top class
Did you go to the gig yesterday fooman65 ?
john boy no, what gig was that?
The celebration of The Jam, Echo Arena, Liverpool.
john boy oh sorry, no I didn't, was working
fooman65 No, I just wondered. From your comments I guess your a big fan of The Jam as well.
"It's our new single..." and their LAST single - a great way to go out on top! #1
I love all of you for even being here! Thank God above for you....big big love.
Great song, great performance, and THAT is how you play a bass guitar !
as fresh today as it was back then
ended it right for the fans! leave it there in the capsule of our youth...the rest is history
Well said, couldn’t agree more.
A timeless capsule. Flawless body of work.

Did Weller break up the band because Foxton was just too cool?
I still feel The Jam had their best years ahead of them but fair play to Weller for preserving the legacy subsequently.
They broke up way too soon
Another brilliant composition by Mr. Paul Weller! Great band...Britain's Best & Finest!!!👍🏼
Foxton is absolute class.
I'm with you, never missed a beat
This was bonfire night in '82 and the first Tube (and unfortunately the best they did!) Always thought when Weller sings '..lived to long in the shadows of sadness' and almost bowed out, that he meant it. Saw them in Poole on the 27th, emotional times...Glenn J
It was the only Tube they did. Their split was announced just a few days before.

Best band in the world, always.
I've first listen to this band this week, and was impressed by the huge amount of good music they've made!
You know that mate
Foxton is a tower of power 👊👊
No band ever been on the planet like them ! Amen
This song is even better played live. Fantastic video.
Back in the day we knew this was the end of The Jam, such a shame!
Hello Friday! Great live version of Beat Surrender...
Breathtaking.
DAMN! Paul is on passionomatic FIRE! and the pounding bass of Rick is slamming!
Sawdust Caesar Rick is the drummer.....Bruce on bass
Be nice, maybe he meant the bass drum.
Absolutely categorically fucking awesome.
This is it, Weller's finest 3 minutes. It only sounds half an inch of the record!! Incredible. LIKE
how can one man influence so much music and fashion . complete skill and fire
I had this whole set on vhs. Recorded off TV. It’s great to see again.
So good I had to watch it twice.!
It guts me that while singing this, they were aware that they were splitting
Bruce n Rick were devastated.
He told them in July 82, he wanted out
Legends at their best...
love the quote ? sing it like you already own it.... the young fans in the crowd singing it before it was officially released
I envy these kids so much!
Brilliant version! Also love the audience reaction
A mighty and triumphant end to The Jam but also a song that points strongly towards Wellers next move
One of the best songs ever don't make music like this today outstanding group the best around and still can give stunning performances brilliant Godbless to them love hugs and kisses foreverxxxx
Saw them live many times, great band, I thought my life had ended when they called it a day.
Agree, with every word.
i hear you...gutted necer got into anything Weller did post Jam.
Their last single and their best.

Exactly right. Modern pop music is just bland soulless pap mainly designed to make money.
Jams goodbye to all that.
A fine band and a fine book.
Always thought they had a couple more albums in em, fair play to Weller bowed out with their best!!!
So gutted when they split in '82. But in retrospect, PW was absolutely spot on. Great vid. Thanks.
So much better than a version on TOTP when Weller is without guitar…this is incredible.
Thank you!
Much beloved in old g New Orleans!

Maybe not the best comparison...
ポールウエラーに憧れた高校生時代。ほんとカッコよかった。
The jam really were the best
only contemporary band i bought really loved the sixties pet sounds, et al The Jam Brilliant
The intensity of this LIVE Performance is OFF THE CHARTS ! Now thats HOW You Perform on STAGE with TALENT !
+Jerome Lange I saw the Jam in '78 at The Whiskey in L.A. a very tight band, they were great
I bet that show was off the hook ! My GF saw The Jam at Perkins Palace, June 82. I later saw The Style Council in L.A.

Tear to my eye knowing this was the end
Bruce foxton is the best bass player to grace the earth
Now more than ever mates! KTF!
Bruce at 1:48, now that's a bass player.
Two of their best singles were their first and last. :-)
Absolute Beast Weller
Bruce Foxton..👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Weller on top form 🔥
3:02 Stone cold fox!
fuckin brilliant
The jam proved from nothing if you give it u get it back and they did give it
That's Gordan Ramsey in the crowd and no one can convince me otherwise.
oh yes the nuts.
The background singers remind me of the Jamacian ladies in the video for Costello's "Everyday I write the book"
mikebott think they were called afrodisiak.
gordon mathers Indeed, they also worked with Elvis Costello, Madness, Billy Bragg.. Karen Wheeler went on to be in Soul 2 Soul in the late 80s.
For me, not since the days of the Jam ,has Wellar retained the passion he had in these days.
Anyone know what he is singing in the Ad Lib bit at the end? 3 mins int o the song
Bruce is kicking seven shades of crap out of this.
The End..
Foxton.
Bruce Foxton
Bruce Foxton has eyelashes I have to pay 8 bucks a tube for. #lifeisunfair
Age may wither him. but he will remain eternally fashionable.Has PW ever looked poorly dressed?
oi oi mr weller sexy man still to this day
Pre Small faces
Fucking adverts - | don't want to see 'Dave's Warehouse' before Weller
one of those 2 at the back...afrodiziak,,,is quite famous you know ;)
you see weller at the later jam gigs. wot energy. he mustve burnt himself oot.
What is the lad on keyboards called?

How many inches deep do you want your toms Mr. Buckler?
“Yes.”
The year was 1982.
A couple sexy young brits in in front row. That makes this even better, the way they are ogling Paul Weller et all.
