I was one of a group, under the guidance of the late Michael Howells, who painted the backdrop. We got the job and had 3 days to produce and psint the whole thing. We did it but didn't sleep for 3 days. I delivered all the painted flats to the location and fell asleep in the van going around Shepherds Bush roundabout @ 6am. When we woz young!!@

2023, & I am an old guy, in Canada, and suddenly a new fan of this song. Thanks to UA-cam, am able to view several old tapes of Style Council & Weller performing this song over the years.
This version is by far the CLEAREST where we can hear the genius of the lyrics matched to rhythms . Like so many here overseas, I don't understand why the group did not get more play at the time. Of course we knew of the song and their other UK hits, but it was mainly played in dance clubs.
And now, thanks to archives & UA-cam, it's fascinating to learn details of what led up to Style Council, details of the band members lives, and where they are at today.

This song is a masterpiece. I´m a guy from Vienna, was 20 and at the military then. Unbelievable, how the British bands delivered during the 80ies. So independent, talented, creative and cool. Real musicians, real bands, real enthusiasm. No computers, no fucking effects, no people as part of the show - and nobody knows, what´s their role and why they are here. If I think of 80ies music, more than 50% of the songs I remember, are from bands like Style Council.Paul Weller is a genius and was a great influencer of British music during these times.

Mass unemployment in Britain in the early 1980s lead to people forming bands to make money. Hence the Second British Invasion was born. All part of Thatcher's plan. Great music, though!

British musicians were definitely using computers and effects for music production, even in the 1980s. Don't blame the technology for the blandness of modern music when the issue is a lack of creativity and an industry that chooses to churn out derivative, overproduced garbage rather than take risks.

Music is such a powerful medium it can bring a motion of highs and lows and memories of good times and bad. This song takes me back to the 80s no stress no thoughts of the future just living for the day and enjoying myself.

For me they'll never be another decade like the '80's.
It was exciting as I was young and life wasn't so serious.
For those of us who were there we were lucky.
Those who weren't born then missed a hell of a time to be alive.

The 80s were pretty great. Aside from the, y'know, ever present fear of nuclear annihilation. I always thought the decadent 80s mentality was more nihilistic than carefree. We were really just having as much fun as we could while riding the bomb down.

I was half in mind, I was half in need
And as the rain came down
I dropped to my knees and I prayed
I said, "Oh heavenly thing, please cleanse my soul
I've seen all on offer and I'm not impressed at all"
I was halfway home, I was half insane
And every shop window I looked in just looked the same
I said, "Now send me a sign to save my life
'Cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in
    These days of mine"
You see it's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you
That I know as much as the day I was born
And though I wasn't asked, I might as well stay
And promise myself each and every day
That when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
But to shout to the top
Well we're gonna shout to the top
We're gonna shout to the top
We're gonna shout to the top
Hey, we're gonna shout to the top
You see it's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you
That I know as much as the day I was born
And though I wasn't asked, I might as well stay
And promise myself each and every day
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
So when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
But to shout to the top (shout)
Well, we're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
And when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
But to shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
Hey, yeah, shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
    Shout to the top (shout)
    Shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
We're gonna shout to the top (shout)
