Its pure magic how Howard Jones makes the synths fade in and out as one melody intertwines with another. Even after so many years, I can still hear each single melody as they weave in and out of one another, slowly fading back into that "distant hum" .. and finally into pure nothingness. So hauntingly beautiful. I'll never hear another song like this.. ever..
Just been on to Howards website. On it he says: "Buddhism is teaching me that to nurture a deep respect for others and oneself is the reason for practicing, and that this is the only way to feel truly happy". Kindness = happiness 🙂
You made me choke when I realised it was also 40 years ago I first saw him at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall - where the hell has all that time gone!
Love this song. When I listen to this song, I feel like I have escaped the present day and am living in the 80s again. How I miss those days... It touches me and carries me away in my thoughts of joy, happiness and also melancholy. There was a time when there was nothing at al Nothing at all, just a distant hum There was a being and he lived on his own He had no one to talk to, and nothing to do He drew up the plans, learnt to work with his hands A million years passed by and his work was done And his words were these... Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see Hope you find it, hope you find it Hope you find me in you So she had built her elaborate home With it's ups and it's downs, its rains and its sun She decided that her work was done, time to have fun and she found a game to play Then as part of the game She completely forgot where she'd hidden herself And she spent the rest of her time Trying to find the parts Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see Hope you find it, hope you find it Hope you find me in you There was a time when there was nothing at all, nothing at all Just a distant hum
I am 37 aswell, I can remember owning the single on vinyl and the instrumental wason the b-side. This is definately my favorite HJ song. I haven't listened to this song in years, but as soon as the music began it gave me chills. It's so cool how somthing a simple as a song can make you feel like you are a teenager again. All the respect in the world to Mr. Jones. Thank you for the music of childhood which became the memories of adulthood.
This is so haunting and beautiful lyrically with an exquiste melody. Howard always inspires me and he has a rare gift of being a poet who can express divine truths through his music. WONDERFUL!! Tony.
"There was a time when there was nothing at all... nothing at all... Just a distant hum..." What a lyric 💫 What a song, so deep and mysterious. I've always loved it.
I remember lying on my bed with this spinning on the record player while reading the lyric insert being blown away by this song!! That was 30 years ago for me! And yet this song still stands amazingly well!
aramanth exactly. he & this album changed my life. became a vegetarian and cut my hair in a mohawk. it's almost a religious experience listening to him for me. Love HoJo!!
Amaranth.. It was written once upon a time that there is for sure nothing new under the sun. That is to say anymore.. What was, what is, will be forever in this present world because after all, there is nothing new under the sun inso much you found it 30 years later. I believe one of my favorite Artists, Sting , named an album ''Nothing like the Sun.'' as all dots for sure connect in reality and balance and opposition but the question remains..I remember when this song came out in my youth and I glanced it over at the time but really the song or message is everlasting, and enduring and a simple encouragement to where I remain to stand just like you 30 years later in discovery of fact... ''Hope you find IT'''..It's really a timeless song and questions and challenges YOU, the listener and to ponder truth in your life. My undying hope that IT fulfills itself by the declaration and brilliance of the original message or what many call a simple retroactive song and do so pass by again in a historical fashion by my testimony here. In conclusion, I say the meaning, and the key to the song stands true to this very day. I would like to think that Howard originally meant it to be just that.
Oh My God, my favourite video/tune of all time, it's so haunting, makes me think about the Big Bang, the Higgs Bosun, all that stuff we try to understand, and the words are still appropriate today, trying to make sense of it all. Gives me hairs on the back of my neck, I love it!
this has to be one of the greatest songs off all time this has followed me through my life, I still play this on my HIFI & its sounds as good as it did back in the 80s Howard Jones ***** thanks you have made my day putting this vid on youtube
Howard played this one on the Esbjerg 80´s festival last year and did well... I was amazed by his still great voice. I feel very lucky to have seen him perform live, i grew up in the 80´s and was a great fan .... Simply great!!
I saw him at the NEC, Birmingham, mid 80's. He did a 2 hour set for a new live video he was releasing. Best concert I have ever been to and I have been to quite a few. The sound, lights, dancing was exceptional. Great memories. Love Howard !!
Thank you *very* much for posting this hauntingly beautiful song and its magnificent video! What memories this brings back! And its so good to be able to enjoy it again - bravo to you!
Howard performed this at a concert here in Colorado Springs, CO back in 2005. It was an AMAZING performance. This song is transcendental and inspiring for some reason. One of Howard's best by far!
Beautiful music. My favourite Howard Jones track. I remember him playing "Hide and Seek" live on Top of the Pops. A calculated risk perhaps, but the performance was simply spellbinding 🧡
He was also brave enough to play an acoustic version of this wonderful and complex song in front of an audience of 70,000+ at "Live Aid" in July 1985. It's an extraordinary, performance, fortunately preserved on video for generations who weren't even born then.
This song was an inspiration to me when I was in college. I bought some crappy keyboards and learned it by ear. It proved to be a great tutor for me regarding music theory. Wonderful chord progressions and melody. And then there are the lyrics... This is my favorite song from Human's Lib. Which was a strong album throughout.
Saw him at the Here & Now concert at Minehead last year (Nov 2007). The bloke has not aged. His voice is the same and his music is still fresh. Well done mate.
Saw/heard him at Esbjerg Rock-festival DK 10 days ago, a great honor to watch him live after all theese years! I tell you, I´ve found everything I need! Howard, thanks for giving so much to all of us!! Love from DK
Saw Howard Jones @ the Glasgow Apollo in the early 80s. Great concert - always enjoyed this song - interesting lyrics - that mean so many different things to so many people. Thanks for sharing!!
Classic Howard Jones, reflective & philosophical. Very deep & beautiful music. Excellent video production makes this presentation superb.. Thanks for posting this great footage.
I'm 37 years old and with all the music going on today and the day to day rush i just feel like i'm much older - not in it. This song remind me of the great time of the 80's, walking to the local disco club, feeling young and so a live !! Those old times were the best, everything was much more naive. I think everyone who was a teenager during the 80's will know what i mean. Thanks for posting this great song.
Heard this fantastic song yesterday and I hadn't heard it for at least 20 years. How great is this and how brilliant was Howard Jones! Ahh 80's memories lol
I've been seeking this piece for years. Because I remembered at my youth neither the title of this song nor artist. Only specific mood. And I was even beginning to think that this magic melody was nothing but my dream. But it was real. Than you, Howard.
+3stefany What a joy that must have been to find it after all these years. It's a beautiful song, I hope it's as good as you remembered. I hope you find it....

Wow. Utterly amazing. I don't remember this song. I didn't hear too much that wasn't on top 40 back then. I really regret missing out on so much great music, but at least I can listen to it now.
Great video clip and song, I went to see Howard live at Melbourne, Australia in 1985. He was brilliant then and still is now. Thank you so much for putting this up. I have used my son's log on so I hope he doesn't mind me using it to write comments. I just had to. :-)

I was not much into 80s music at the time, but Howard was a revelation, and this creation is a masterpiece, thank you Howard.
First saw Mr Jones 40 years ago at the NEC Birmingham,,so we decided to see him at the Symphony hall 16/10/2023..still amazing thank you..
You made me choke when I realised it was also 40 years ago I first saw him at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall - where the hell has all that time gone!
I think I was there, if he had a mime artist on stage it was the same concert
Wow! This song & sound takes my breath away. The 80s had such great artists, composer and acts! Like this one. Amazing!
Love this song. When I listen to this song, I feel like I have escaped the present day and am living in the 80s again. How I miss those days... It touches me and carries me away in my thoughts of joy, happiness and also melancholy.
There was a time when there was nothing at al
Nothing at all, just a distant hum

A million years passed by and his work was done
And his words were these...
Hope you find it in everything,

Hope you find it in everything,

Hope you find it, hope you find it
Hope you find me in you
So she had built her elaborate home
With it's ups and it's downs,
its rains and its sun
She decided that her work was done,
time to have fun
and she found a game to play
Then as part of the game
She completely forgot where she'd hidden herself
And she spent the rest of her time
Trying to find the parts
Hope you find it in everything,
everything that you see
Hope you find it in everything,
everything that you see
Hope you find it, hope you find it
Hope you find me in you
There was a time when there was nothing at all, nothing at all
Just a distant hum
I feel the exact same way when i hear this song. 😢

Hi All, one of the `forgotten songs` of the 80`s. The intro is exactly as I imagined the video to look like when I first heard it being played on the Radio...Moonscapes and panoramic earth-scaping is the perfect imagery for this tune. Great track.
