I remember when this song came out. I was 10 years old and life was a bit simpler but still a struggle. All throughout my school years i was a loner....couldn't make friends to save my life. And thus....no one ever was to blame. Thanks to all who read this for letting me share this.

A lot of us... getting today's folks to open their ears and HEAR the beauty of The Righteous Brothers hit Unchained Melody, Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison... no autotune, no overdub, no tape mix... just talent, just ability, and a message. I hope they learn that even though modernity... the 80s and the wonderful things that electronics could do, for every crap track put out there were artists like Howard Jones who had a good message and a talent that really didn't need the electronics... they were just going with the flow of the day. Good music has no color, no sex, no age, no type. It is something universal. So I can feel the pain and wrongness of Strange Fruit, the beauty of The First Time (ever I saw your face) the longing of Unchained Melody, the sadness of I'm so lonesome I could cry, Coal miners daughter, I will always love you (dolly and Whitney's version) in dreams, me and Bobby Mcgee, names like Hank Williams sr. , patsy cline, Loretta Lynn, charley pride, etta James, the supremes, Billie Holliday, Sam cooke, al Green, Otis redding, big mama Thornton, willie Nelson, garth Brooks, Janis Joplin, the doors, Roy orbison, Evanescence, Eminem, Tupac, Phil Collins, George Clinton, Howard Jones, heart, led zeppelin, Tracy chapman...
I could type forever... if it is good and real and says something, it will be those things whether it is folk, country, bluegrass, blues, r&b, hip hop, soul, disco, rock, metal, electronic, black, white, old, new, ... good is universal and the more we embrace each other the wiser we become. I say turn it up brother, 1962 old white female says to 2024 fellow music lover... turn it up!

It's 1986, I'm 19yo, and it's the last song of the night at Park Ave in Milwaukee, on one of the Thursday night alt nights. I'm in a long black narrow skirt with a high slit and a cream colored vintage silk blouse and combat boots. I have a crush on the friend of a boy I had been dating, but we were more friends than anything. This song comes on and I would think it was kind of cheesy when couples at a punk/alt/goth type club would dance a slow dance, but when he asked me dance I didn't hesitate. We went out a few times after that. I don't really remember a whole lot about what we did or how long it lasted (not long, lol) I'm 56 now. But I can remember this little slice of my life as if I am there. I can picture him, I can even remember how to spell his last name, which is no small feat, Bajczyk. Such a beautiful, innocent, and pleasant memory. Thanks Howard, and thanks Jerry B.

Mine was Myrtle Beach. Graduation 1986. Her name was Julie Guarrino. Gorgeous young lady from Akron Ohio. Blazing red hair and delicate brown skin. We met. The vibes were instantaneous. The waves crashing on the beach….. The moonlight in her hair caressing her soft, warm, silky skin. We spent an entire week running, laughing, playing in the ocean and just really enjoying a life that was so simple and pure. Times then we’re just so much different than now. Our summer came to a close and we parted ways with sadness in our eyes. We stayed in touch but eventually lost contact. To this day I still think of her and that glorious summer and wonder if she does the same….

Now when I am driving to work as a teacher, (which I have been for the last 25 years) I sometimes recall moments like these and just smile to myself.

I'm feeling nostalgic. My father fought prostate, bone and brain cancer for 5 years. He grew tired😢. For three weeks he endured death. Died on hospice after 3 days.
He was my KING! THE KING OF KINGS TOOK MY KING!
I held him and said there was a crown waiting for you.
He died July 25th. He went in the hospital the day before my Birthday for 4 pints of blood and had multiple strokes after. He was ready. He introduced me to the word of God. He never knew his father. His father is in heaven. My father is in heaven. Bless everyone seeking. Faith is knowing 💯

Not exactly. The original version was on the Dream into Action album, which was released in the United States. This version was re-recorded with Phil Collins performing the drums, released on the US EP Action Replay, but the I'm sure this exact single was released worldwide, including in the UK. As far as I can tell, the album version was never released as a single.

When this song hit the radio in '86 I was 20, living at Myrtle Beach, and somehow met this beautiful, smart redheaded Canadian girl from Peterboro who was down on vacation.
We hit it off like mad; an exciting, magic connection that even now, some 36 years later, I remember with a hitch in my breath.
But, back then - there were complications - none the least that we lived so far apart, and were so young.
In time, of necessity, we moved on.
    No one was to blame.
Still though, and until the day I die, when I hear this song I'll briefly be 20 again, holding her, feeling that magic...
    Thanks, Howard.

I was from California, and she was from Georgia. When I got home from the cruise, this song would bring me to tears because I missed her. We met one more time, and then drifted apart. This song reminds me of the girl, I was madly in love with about the time this song came out. We rode the same bus home from school. I never had the guts to tell her what she meant to me... She was my best friend. The highlight of my day was riding that bus home and sitting next to her. I then had to move away across country. I carried her pic in my wallet for years and told everyone she was my girlfriend. I finally moved back when I was 21. Went to her work to finally ask her out. She just told me about how happy she was with this guy she just met. I never asked... now 30 years later we connect on Facebook. We are both married now. She has kids and looks like she has a happy life. Well we both finally admitted it.... we were both mad about each other. I am still mad about her... it's just too late. I wish I could go back and change things. My life would have been so much better. Having someone that actually loved me. One thing I will always have is the memory of this song and the memory of those bus rides home. Sidney, I will love you until the day I die... just wished you realized back then what you meant to me. I felt alive when we were together.... forever yours... ....

Or alternately i think things started going downhill when Micheal Jackson released bad and convinced a generation to be gang members, and criminals. Things were always different after that.

Great musician! My wife met him at a charity event in NYC. To say that he was a nice guy would be a huge understatement. Just a super, super nice human, no bs...a really
nice guy with tons of talent. People talk about folks who have a loving vibe and it is mostly hype. Not with this guy. You get the sense that he really, really loves people.

    • @victoria7t
      @victoria7t 4 роки тому +3

He really is just a beautiful human being inside and out and that that beauty has so much talent is just amazing. Hes such a unicorn. He was then and he is now. I was also fortunate enough to meet him without even trying to. It was in the mid eighties and he had a show but OMD was opening. I and my friend were sitting in the crowd and there was a spare seat to the right of me that I thought nothing of. I figured the person would show up in time for the show. Went out the corner of my eye I saw somebody sit down on thought OK they finally showed up and I turned around to see who it was just because I happen to be a friendly sort of person like that and it was Howard himself. He did that sometimes he would sit in the crowd to catch his own opening at that came before his turn on stage. He is does so very humble and kind and I feel so honored that I was able to think him. His songs common namely his song New Song, literally saved my life when I was in my teens. Is it not for that song or any of his music in general I wouldn't be her today.

There are a lot of '80s songs that take me back, but none do it in a way so overwhelmingly clear as this one. Just that opening rhythm and I can see the house I lived in in 1986, the girl I liked, my friends in the neighborhood, my young parents, the activities I did then, etc... Ah, to have a time machine.

Unrequited means the other does not share in the infatuation. So, no, this song is not about unrequited circumstances.. “and you want her, and she wants you”. Both people feel the same but cannot due to circumstances...like being married to someone else, having family, responsibilities.
I suppose one can stretch it to mean one not chosen if you ignore the lyrics to the refrain. It’s still the same that no one is to blame for unrequited feelings. Sucks about the same, maybe. But I think the situation where two people want each other and can’t is worse.
