you can definitely sound like ...And Justice For All without busting the bank
You can actually make a profit getting that sound.
Just dont play at all...
You can sound like and justice for all without leaving the house
You can hear bass on AJFA
On the remastered version
You forgot to put the Volume on 0 at Jason's Rig.
a real pity, as Jason's (hidden) playing on AJFA was great: ua-cam.com/video/u974znwnBj4/v-deo.html
@@johnwalliss Metallica has a bassist?!
unfunny
I came here just for these jokes
@@Josh-it6uy We know Newstead is amazing. That's the joke
How could you do this video and not play For Whom The Bell Tolls and Orion?
tglu87 cuz he played Anesthesia
I mean, he also said Burton’s Rick was jetglo, and that he didn’t gig with it because it was fragile. 1st, it was burgundy, and 2nd he didn’t gig it because of electrical issues.
@@davidpearson6346 he isnt wrong though.
Cliff didn't gig the ricky coz it and some guitars of james and kirk got stolen in 84-85
SgtD it was an alembic that was stolen, his Rickenbacker needed maintenance constantly because of the upgrades he had installed:
A Gibson Eb Mudbucker
A Seymour Duncan Jazz Pickup
And a Singlcoil stack right under the bridge pickup
This was a diy upgrade nightmare considering he had to get it all to work, but it did
I applaud you for actually playing anesthesia!
Also loved the my friend of misery jam.
Awesome to see the Bass getting the spotlight on this series! Now I hope if you could do this kind of variation with stuff like trying to sound like Flea or Steve Harris!
sound like flea:
Fender Active Flea Jazz Bass
GK Head and Cab
Fuzz
Auto wah
EQ
there you go
@@sakimiyu4169 Ahh that has a lot of potential, but I would still like to see their interpretation.
@@sakimiyu4169 switch out that Fender for a Modulus Flea.
@Fuji Oxford Andertons don't do Modulus
at least i think they don't
Mike Dirnt.
And credit to all, but Jason Newstead all the way for me, lockin’ it down like it needs to be.
Yeppp
Agreed.
Cliff left behind a bunch of future bass players in that generation. One heck of a legacy. As a teen that man blew my mind. Had to ask my dad for a bass and he got right on it. Thanks dad
Dont play bass guitar myself but a really enjoyable video to watch. The guy playing bass has served me many times in the shop and is just as enthusiastic doing that. An asset to Andertons
All of Jason's stuff up to and including the Load album was recorded on a spector NS-2 and a 1958 precision bass. The Sadowsky stuff didn't come in till Reload.
Who knew the bass guys would end up being the most entertaining ones at Andertons?
This was awesome, Cliff was one of the guys that made me want to play bass and he's one of my absolute favourite bassists of all time. He really opened my eyes to what the bass could do and he's also one of the guys that made me want to get a Rickenbacker (Edit: I now own one after buying it in the summer of 2020 and it’s still been my main bass since, and the one I play in a band with my friends)
A sounds like for the bass? I would love some more... Especially something for Peter Hook, Lou Barlow, even Carlos Dengler
PETER HOOK YES PLEASE.
Peter Hook: a small clone will get you most of the way there. EQ your amp bright, play in the upper register. Strum fairly hard.
Lou: loudness is key. Hit the front of your amp hard, dime the gain, play hard.
Dengler: Jazz bass, favour the neck pickup. Play with a pick. No effects. Think he generally played quite light strings and rarely changed them. Apparently not very interested in his equipment beyond the plainest functionality.
What about calling the series "Bass like........"
Hi cool guys \m/ Cliff and Jason, both mindblowing bass players.
Sadowsky is american brand btw
Oooooh yeahhhh looking forward to Justin Chancellor! (Hopefully, keeping my fingers crossed)
Theyll probaply get it as awfull as this one
@@ColinBoonstra honestly mate, I don't really care if it doesn't sound great these guys are really entertaining. plus, trying to get a sound as close to Cliff as possible is really difficult
@@maxgburton i mean ive done it with way cheaper gear then a Kemper wich was a dumb choice anyway but i get where you are coming from, if you dont believe me hit me up on facebook
@Colin Boonstra this one was NOT awful, it was awesome
and the closest bass that'll get Justin's tone would be a spector, with a whammy pedal, not sure bout amp tho
@@sakimiyu4169 if you're looking at the cliff aspect it was
How about a sound like Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy.
precision bass into a fender probably and a phase 90 or Micro Flanger for Waiting For An Alibi
Yay! More "sound like" for bass! Please do more of these!
I really enjoy your series "All About the Bass", now I have another MUST WATCH! Thanks
How about a “Sound like Mark King” episode ? I bet Nathan knows a thing or two about that😁
Well done guys! Don't forget the Suicidal Tendencies for Trujillo!
xeniousAR he really made their sound. His work in Infectious Grooves was spot on.
@@kiltymacbagpipe I loves me some Infectious Grooves!
The plague that makes your booty move.
Not that there was audible bass all the time... The first sound was authentic until the Wah came in!
Mac Crazy It sounds too saturated or something. Cliff's wah was more of a top boost while maintaining some clarity.
Didn't Cliff use a standard guitar wah? Bass ones are probably tuned differently.
@@rkan665 yea the dry tone is similar in volume as without the wah and the wah sits kinda on top, this one seems to suck away everything thats there
@@Tehstroyer Yeah, he used a normal Morley Power Wah... Nice thing but I prefer my Bad Horsie II :-D
To be fair, crybabys are s lot different to Morley wahs. And the bass crybaby is actually a low pass filter not a wah (bandpass)
You forgot to crank the bass amp volume up so high that it tears down the building
@@ammarD he's talking about cliff, the bass was a huge part of the band until 1986
@@maxjudge020 I just love people that take every single Joke seriously.
@@ammarD how is that even a joke
You guys nailed it absolutely at it was a pure pleasure to watch!
Sadowsky has nothing to do with Germany. Roger has been building instruments in New York City since day one.
It's not even german name lol
I guess he mixed it up with Sandberg🤔
Was thinking the same
Loving all the comments about using an air guitar to achieve the And Justice For All sounds! Well funny!
On a serious note I still maintain hearing Cliff Burton's bass live is the best bass sound I have ever heard. Of course purely personal to me but I just loved it and (as yet) have never heard any better and count myself lucky I managed to see him live.
Sound Like Metallica (Bass) = Get a Kemper
On a side note: Cliff's Rickenbacker was reportedly very heavily Modified. He changed pick-ups and even had an additional guitar pick-up somewhere in the bridge area.
It really sounds like metallica indeed, especially since in 99% of the video, we're not hearing any bass being played at all
cripple horse that’s how Metallica did it. 😅
I’m a bit of a gear head that’s a new sound but it’s not an old sound. It sounds like rob not cliff
Love this idea to compete with Rabea and Matt although Matt often plays bass when its needed which is also great! Any chance of you two doing a video comparing all the low end basses of one type say a Precision bass, between Squier CV and Sire and a few others its hard to know which one to get especially for the online shoppers who dont have all these basses in stores near them
Regarding Cliff, there was some misinformation:
Joined ‘82, played on Kill ‘Em All (1983), Ride The Lightning (1984) and Master Of Puppets (1986), died in 1987 in a buss accident in Sweden.
He used a mid 70s BurgundyGlo Rickenbacker loaded with a Gibson mudbucker, Seymour Duncan hot stack J and a hot Seymour Duncan Strat pickup under the bridge in place of the string mutes. He later switched to the Aria Pro II due to electrical malfunctions in the Rick after all his modifications. He used various amps, most notably Sunn O))) and Mesa Boogie, and his pedal board most famously featured a Morley power fuzz wah, a TS808, Biff Muff Pi and a CS-2
It was a rickenbacker 4001 and he wasn’t worried about it breaking on tour it did break due to the strat guitar pickup under the bridge but luckily he was endorsed by the Japanese company Aria and got the black and gold aria pro 2 used on master of puppets
Literally been waiting ages for a sound like for bass
Robert Trujillo is a goddamn monster on Bass. Highly versatile and basically perfect rhythm, I've legit never seen the dude mess up live unless it was him trying to crab walk.
What made Cliff Burton so amazing was his versatility is musical styles from Blues, Jazz, Classical, Rock, and of course metal. I LOVE his Chorus work on the albums RTL and MOP, you can tell he didn't play to a metronome and was very clearly free-styling in the choruses, look specifically at Creeping Death to see what I mean, it's such a tragedy to have lost him so early and before he could even peak as a musician. He knew when to go hard and when to dial it back(Look at the verse riff of Master Of Puppets and Battery)
And goddamn Jason's Newsted's stage presence is hardly rivaled even to this day. The dude sounded like the Devil on top of being a very consistent player.
This would have been fun to do the whole, in the store looking for gear thing. Do the whole sounds like experience.
11:25 AFAIK Roger Sadowsky's shop is based in NYC, and have a Japanese line of instruments called Metro... Besides Warwick, the first famous "turbo-Fender" German brand coming to my mind is Sandberg, and they can look similar-ish. Funny story is there was an article on Bass Player circa 1996 when he was talking about his Sadowsky basses, saying that he bought a stock of 8 or so, made waterproof for him (he said he sweated a lot) and if memory serves me well he mentioned testing them immerging them into a pool of water, lol 😆
Anyway, what's curious is that he also had a trusted vintage specs P bass (58/59?) that made it to a lot of recording sessions for the Load/Reload era. You can spot an old sunburst P in studio footage from around November 95.
How can you know nothing about Metallica?
Seriously how??
They're probably one of the biggest bands in history
First time on this channel and this is about the only video I can stomach, the guy on the left literally makes me cringe on the inside which I didn't think was humanly possible.
first bass player in metallica was Ron mcgovney
Cliff joined A bit later
Waited for this for soooooo much
Your Cliff bass tone was bad sorry. The best gear are amp< tube screamer ts8
That's funny, my first ever bass (excluding the duct tape bass my unrelated brother gave me to learn on) was an Aria Pro II and I never once knew Metallica used them.
Best way is getting a Spector Legend bass and a good fender Rumble amp and you can pretty much get Cliffs tone out of Spector alone, I played one and got even a Rick Tone out of it as well as Les Claypools and John Entwistles Buzzard Bass tones, also Jason used Spector and Alembic while with metallica too, can't believe they weren't even mentioned
Love how you didn’t mention AJFA, truly nailed the sound on that one
what were the settings for cliff's rig ????
I'd love to see Chris Wolstenholme (Muse) covered, especially his usual live tone nowadays!
His live tone is just something else, so thick and punchy, just unbelievable!
Worth mentioning that among Rob's Jazz basses is Jaco Pastorius' Bass of Doom
got me chills that bass play, stunning!
Best andertons upload evah!
The Morecombe and Wise of bass playing. Totally brilliant. More clean Rickenbacker tones please (sound like Geddy Lee) the sound is monumental. Cant wait for the Christmas special.
I really hope this side of things doesn't end up in the same hole as the guitar "Sound Like" where they keep trying to replicate the same boring tones over and over again, and failing at the ones that are actually somewhat unique and warrant an actual video. As a bass player I feel this series has a dangerous possibility of getting stale fast, so please lads, pick the sounds well, even if it means more infrequent episodes.
Thanks
Your Prince cover was better. On a side note there were actually 4 bass players, Ron McGovney on their first demo, and then Bob Rock played on St Anger. But I get why they weren't included.
Ron McGovney technically came before Cliff Burton so Metallica had 4 bassists in total. You can hear McGovney on early demos but by the time Kill 'Em All was recorded, they had Cliff Burton. Same sort of deal with how Kirk Hammett was in Exodus but then he left by the time Bonded by Blood was recorded and was recorded on Kill 'Em All, replacing Dave Mustaine who could be heard on the early Metallica demos.
Spector basses were used primarily on the Black Album tracks. He switched to using Sadowsky basses during that tour because moisture did not cause the electonics on the Sadowsky basses to fail during the live shows.
Cliff used a Morley Power Wah Boost
As soon as the friend of misery jam came in I was hooked. Super entertaining to watch and listen too 🤘
Sound like Al Cisneros from Sleep/OM.
I will not stop commenting this until you do it
nice, finally a bass version of this series!
Now that was an awesome sound like video!! hella fun guys nice work . :)
FINALLY A BASS SOUNDS LIKE
Some cool suggestions would be:
Krist novoselic of nirvana
Colin greenwood of radiohead
Geezer butler of black sabbath
Justin chancellor of tool
Flea from rhcp
was Royal Blood not a bass sound like? well technically not cos it's a bass sounding like a guitar
I wanna see them do N.I.B if they do geezer
My dude! Absolutely KILLING Anesthesia!!
From the man , Cliff, on what he uses.
ua-cam.com/video/Dxaut6XsM_E/v-deo.htmlsi=MNl6UFjmJYrfE5a0
2:09 Pretty close, Kill 'Em All is 1983
*would love a mudvayne one* please at least 30 minutes toooo!!!!
Br br deng
BR BR DENG!
Br Br DENG!
The sound of Dig
Gonna be that guy for a sec. Cliffs Rickenbacker had a Gibson mudbucker in the neck and a Duncan Jazz stack in the bridge as well as having a Duncan stacked strat pickup in place of the foam mute, he retired if after the electronics failing so an Epiphone EB-3 would be closer than a stock rickenbacker, he never used a TS-9 he used a big muff Pi and later a TS-808 but never a TS-9.
Great video! You need to do more of these along with the history lessons.
I've wanted this for a long time
Makes sense as their live rigs are now 100% AxeFX. Saw them live a couple of times and Robert is frustratingly quiet in the live mix. I don't get why you have such a talented guy in your band and then don't let people hear him. Good video, more please!
I saw a vid about cliffs rig. He had a guitar pickup in the Ricky. It was hidden how bad ass. It was a single coil size humbucker
a Gibson mudbucker in the neck and there was a pickup under the bridge
I dont think you guys understand how amazing this video is
Purple rain power!!! nice one lads!
Cliffs bass was heavily modified and it was having issues with the touring life thats why he replaced it was due to all the mods
Cliff was NOT the first bassist for Metallica.. Ron McGoveny was he Recorded “Hit The Lights” for there first appearance on the compilation album “Metal Massacre” but Cliff was the BEST bassist they ever had. !!!
Please do same with Gun’s n roses!!
to get Duff's sound use a Fender Duff McKagan P Bass or an Aerodyne Jazz bass, plug into a Fender Bassman head and cab, throw in a booster for more distorted tones and use a chorus for sweet child o mine
Do a Motörhead/Lemmy bass sound like video please!!!!!!!
Pretty sure I've jammed with Lee at a open mic in watford held by Martin renshaw
My Friend of Misery is THE most underrated Metallica track. I know the sound is close, but not exact, but I'd say Newstead's tone on the track was a bit more punchy. But, loved you playing it!!
You guys should do one of these about Rush!!
if I am not mistaken, Cliff changed rickenbacker because the number of customizations (pickups) he did on it caused the bass to underperform :)
Finally! More sounds like on bass!
Just turn it down really low in the mix.
Awesome guys!
Well that ''Cliff'' tone was certainly something
That second bass is gorgeous
*Serious question, how do you get cliffs clean tone?*
Use a compressor and the neck pickup, to start
TheNirclex: Canal Morido first get an Aria bass with an MB-1 or MB-2 pickup, if there’s two pickups --> neck = 100% bridge = 75% tone 70%. Simple right? Now that you have that get a cranked Ampeg SVT with 1x15 and 8x10 cabs. Usually he would go DI into the board from his amp but sometimes you would find him micing it up, usually with a SM57. Almost forgot he 1 pickup config... crank it all except keep tone at 75%. Pretty simple guide... I will be back soon with some sound samples from this guide with this exact setup, just like cliffs. I hope you mean by his clean tone most of his MOP stuff cause that’s with the Aria and imo his best tone and best writing is there, though earlier songs don’t leave stuff lacking. I’m super board right now but I could tell you that my Aria bass was 700 shipped from Japan and it’s good :D
I don’t think cliff used the wah that much in anesthesia
Should be called 'How To Destroy: That Was Just Your Life'.
Anesthesia tone was really good
Seen Metallica over the years with Cliff, Jason & Rob & yes Cliff was THE man!
That wah was a trainwreck
Bullshit! it was a masterpiece
Love the energy boys, good video
Do Rex Brown
Great fun guys! Absolutely love it! 😀👍
Great video. Andertons should definitely stock Sadowsky basses and Morley pedals.
Don't forget Rob's work with Suicidal Tendencies and The Infectious Grooves
How dare did I miss this?
Don't you just love it when people don't know what they're on about and can't be arsed researching before they make a video.Holy fuck, it's like the Chuckle Brothers do Metallica.
Great fun vid guys, nice one
YES!!! A SOUND LIKE BASS EPISODE!!!
This is a really good way to show how important bass was to punctuating their sound. And I'm a guitar player lol
Cliff Burton and "Anesthesia (PullingTeeth)" in particular is the reason I am a bass player today. Master of Puppets is a master class with regards to the bass. Cliff was amazing. Jason Newsted is great too. I liked Trujillo with Suicidal Tendencies, but not so much with Metallica. Also I am glad you are doing Sounds Like for the bass. Why should Rabea and Matt have all the fun?
Finally a bass sound like. Thats great!
very good video but in the Jason demonstration they would have put the pedals that he uses live, the flanger and other pedals that are not very well understood, to achieve that aggression;))
