Gita mam I'm so excited to learn this hack which served as a game changer in my kitchen work.we Bengalis also do use coconut in our various dishes, though not daily, but quite often,it adds a certain melodious dimension to our special cuisines; my family also enjoys coconut chutney regularly in breakfast for a loving south indian texture, but scraping coconut was a nightmare to me and I had to depend on my domestic help for this difficult task. But now I'm free of that stress and feeling glad and accomplished. The entire credit goes to u and only u.I have always been a great admirer of u for those practical, sustainable and what we call today a minimalist approach of ur lessons;my heartiest regards, stay safe, happy and productive.

Thank you for showing this trick! For people like me, who live abroad, have a tough time finding freshly grated coconut. I made the regular coconut chutney yesterday. It was so delicious and fresh. Glad I came across your video. I was always aching to find an effective way to grating the flesh but never knew about this trick till I saw your video.

Gita dear, I'm from Australia married to a German: we're both mad about Indian food n cooking! I embarked on your site by accident and am impressed to be able to grate coconut in my mixie. I wouldn't be able to handle the two authentic Indian graters! Buying frozen grated coconut from gourmet outlets is expensive but now I can produce my own at a fraction of the cost. Gratefully, thank you so very much. I've subscribed to your site and look forward to learning lots n lots more from you!

Thank you very much, Gita madam! I was tired of buying frozen shredded coconut from the shop. I was also tired of searching for odd contraptions on Amazon that claim to grate the fastest. I will certainly be switching to buying whole coconuts now that I know how to grate it easily. Thank you again.

Yes Madam, my mom uses the same technique and i learnt it from her. My mom however never deshells the coconut and slices the coconut bits when its inside the shell ( after breaking it into half ofcourse, which my dad helps her with). And then grinds these bits in the mixie.I found it easy as well, though I'm not a huge fan of coconuts. I also remember my mom giving this little tip to my grandmom many years ago. Thanks for sharing this tip/ technique with everyone.

Wow ! You should file a patent for this technology !
Seriously, this has been a problem that has vexed me all my life in Europe. I got a tabletop grater from India of the kind that you showed in the video and it lasted just 1 week. The other fearsome device "arumamanai" which my grandmother used to use is certainly not for amateurs like me - I will scrape off my palm instead of the coconut. But then she eschewed all the mixies and grinders and claimed that things tasted better when done manually - be it scraping coconut using the "arumamanai" or using the "aattukall". As a kid, I was fascinated by the dexterity with which these older ladies manipulated these devices and used to spend endless hours gazing at them labouring with them.
The freeze, extract from shell, grind technique you have showed never occurred to me and I thank you once again for this valuable tip.
Your clearly explained videos are a boon, not only to me but to many others. I have referred your videos to my British and French friends at work and they love it. Also, your English is spoken slowly and clearly and that helps immensely for people here who don't easily grasp Indian English.
Romba romba thanks from Strasbourg, France.

Do you live in Madras? My parents live in Madras too although we are "PalBrams" from Kerala. The cuisine at home is heavily influenced by Kerala and coconut is used a lot. Also the language I speak is neither Tamil nor Malayalam but a delicious mixture of the two. I guess you would have seen Kamalahasan's masterpiece Michael Madana Kamaraj where he makes a fairly good attempt at that dialect.
You ought to convince your husband and come and visit us here in Strasbourg. Lot less hectic than Paris with no shortage of sights to see.
      Once again, great videos !
      Cheers

We can even thaw coconut in room temperature water. Just take out the coconut from freezer and put it in water covered in a plastic cover for about 10mins. Then using a blunt knife itself we can remove the coconut from its shell. We have been doing this method from years and it has never failed. It'll save both time and the risk of a sharp knife.

Hi aunty very helpful demonstration thank you
I would like to suggest that you freeze the coconut in an ice tray with small cubes. And once they frozen then take them out of ice tray same way we remove ice & put them all in a zip lock freezer bag.
This way you only take 1 or 2 pieces of it as you need & do not need to thaw the whole batch.
Thank you so much for all your recipes I love them all. Only found your first recipe yesterday & subscribed straight away 🤗

Thank you so much Auntie for this , I am married in a Telugu family so coconut has become part of my cooking , but I didn’t know how to remove the coconut from it’s shell and hence ( I have the standing scraper but find it tiresome to do the scraping so frequently) . This way is the easiest, scoop out and grind it😍😍😍Thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
