The Cadillac Commercial Chassis is a chassis that was built by the Cadillac division of General Motors. Produced from 1931 to 1979, the Commercial Chassis was constructed as an incomplete vehicle intended for use by coachbuilders for final assembly and fitment of bodywork. Produced on the D platform (exclusive to Cadillac) throughout its entire production, the Commercial Chassis was initially derived from the Series 355, shifting to the Series 75 from 1936 onward.
Coinciding with a change in design regulations and the downsizing of Cadillac sedans, the Commercial Chassis was phased out as a distinct product line. The professional car basis would be continued by the Series 75 and successor flagship Cadillac sedans to current production.
The Cadillac Commercial Chassis is perhaps most famous as the basis for the Ectomobile in the 1984 film Ghostbusters and its sequels, Ghostbusters II (1989) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). Ecto Ecto 1 Ecto 2
The Cadillac Commercial Chassis is a variant of the GM D-body specifically developed for professional car use; most applications included funeral coaches (hearses), ambulances, and combination cars. In contrast to the Cadillac 75 (a factory-built limousine), the Commercial Chassis was designed with a heavier-duty frame; to improve access to the rear cargo area, the rear frame rails were positioned lower than a standard D-body.
Produced by Cadillac as an "incomplete vehicle", the rolling chassis was fitted with no bodywork aft of the dashboard. While fitted with all road controls and front body trim (and air conditioning, if specified), all bodywork from the dashboard rearward was completed by coachbuilders using the chassis as a basis for a completed vehicle; to aid body fabrication, front door shells and rear quarter panels were shipped to the coachbuilders (separate from the chassis).
Before World War II, the Commercial Chassis used the longest wheelbase of any GM sedan-based vehicle, ranging up to 165 inches in 1940. During the 1950s and 1960s, the chassis used a 156-inch wheelbase

One of my favorite features of this kit that carries over from the Ecto 1 that no one ever talks about is the steering wheel. It's molded with one of those stitch on vinyl covers that were popular in the 80s and 90s. And being separate from the column, can be used on the Revell Monogram 59 for an added detail.

AMT did make a Cannonball Run Ambulance back in 81/82 when the movie came out. They had a whole series. The Ambulance, the Hawaiian Tropic Malibu and the Lmaborghini Countach. I think that was all of them. The Ambulance was the closest to real van, but was a couple years newer than the film van and had the wrong grille. It was based on the the Ram van kit that's been around the block a few times.

Station Wagon mod time! Only missed opportunity IMO, is that they didn't mod the front bumper to have transparent lenses for the headlights. That bumper was on the new chrome part tree, so they could've done it.

When I did the Surf Shark kit I glued the fins on like you did. I later regretted doing that. With those fins in place it made it difficult to apply BMF to the window frames. Other than that, it was a fun and easy build to do. I built mine as an in service ambulance. I wish that I could have had the stretcher for that build.

We had these ambulances when I was in Marine Boot Camp, they were operated by the Navy and were just painted Navy gray, as this model is not that detailed I would just paint it in the Navy gray scheme with their markings. Just a simple build.

I'm enjoying this build - it's a simple kit that with the right attention to detail it can look really nice. It'd be good to see it next to Ecto-1 and the Surf Shark wagon that came out a couple of years ago. Maybe a hearse is a bit too morbid but possibly the 3D printing companies or resin casters might do a modified interior for that.

MPC did the Transcon Medivac Cannonball Run van in the early '80s, but the kit was the newer facellifted version of the Dodge van. But it can be combined with earlier MPC Dodge van kits for an accurate replica - just not cheaply unless Round 2 backdates the van and gets the licensing like you mention. It may happen, but licensing is very pricey these days.
