The Chevrolet El Camino is a coupé utility vehicle that was produced by Chevrolet between 1959-60 and 1964-1987. Unlike a standard pickup truck, the El Camino was adapted from the standard two-door Chevrolet station wagon platform and integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body.
Introduced in the 1959 model year in response to the success of the Ford Ranchero coupé utility, its first run, based on the Biscayne's B-body, lasted only two years. Production resumed for the 1964-1977 model years based on the Chevelle platform, and continued for the 1978-1987 model years based on the GM G-body platform.
Although based on corresponding General Motors car lines, the vehicle is classified in the United States as a pickup.[1] GMC's badge engineered El Camino variant, the Sprint, was introduced for the 1971 model year. Renamed Caballero in 1978, it was also produced through the 1987 model year.
Chevrolet introduced a longer El Camino in 1968, based on the Chevelle station wagon/four-door sedan wheelbase (116 in (2,946 mm), overall length: 208 in (5,283 mm)); it also shared Chevelle Malibu exterior and interior trims. The interior was revamped including cloth and vinyl or all-vinyl bench seats and deep twist carpeting. All-vinyl Strato bucket seats and center console were an $111 option. Power front disc brakes and Positraction were optional. A new, high-performance Super Sport SS396 version was launched. The Turbo-Jet 396 was offered in 325 bhp (242 kW) or 350 bhp (260 kW) versions. Returning to the official options list for the first time since late 1966 was the 375 bhp (280 kW) L78. It had solid lifters, big-port heads, and an 800 cfm Holley four-barrel on a low-rise aluminum manifold. In 1968, the SS was a separate model (the "SS-396").
The 1969 models showed only minor changes, led by more-rounded front-end styling. For the first time, the Chevrolet 350 V8 was used in an El Camino. The Super Sport group included a 265 or 325 hp (198 or 242 kW) 396-cubic-inch V8 beneath a double-domed hood, along with a black-out grille displaying an SS emblem. More potent editions of the 396 engine, developing 350 or 375 hp (261 or 280 kW) also made the options list.
The 1970 models received sheet metal revisions that gave the bodies a more squared-up stance, and interiors were also redesigned. The new SS396, which actually displaced 402 cu in (6.6 L) (although all emblems read 396) was available. Chevrolet's largest and most-powerful engine of the time was also put into a select few El Caminos. The LS6 454 CID engine, rated at 450 hp (336 kW) and 500 lb⋅ft (678 N⋅m) of torque, gave the El Camino 1/4-mile times in the upper 13-second range at around 106 mph (171 km/h)

My dad won a 71 SS in black when I was a kid. He bought a raffle ticket at a drag race and his was pulled. We started racing Jr.Dragsters as kids and before we had a trailer we would haul it in the back of the el Camino. This kit and the go cart from the 60 Chevy will help me scratch build the jr. and I’ll be able to keep the memory in 1/25th scale.

A very nice build. Not to detract from your spot on color choices, or excellent detailing and the tight assembly - BUT that soap box racer is too cute. I'm getting this kit for the racer. Yea, I'm 76 Wednesday and I remember my "Derby Days". Thanks, Chris for another great Saturday morning (this is way better than those old black and white TV, Saturday cartoons).

My friend had the 454 el Camino in 1977, I think it was a 72, not positive, I had a 71 cuda, he pulled up next to me at our drinking spot and creased my car down the side, thanks drew, lol, I didn't care, too much, accidents happen, but those were cool cars, thanks for bringing back memories, good and bad. Life's short, try not to sweat the details, life goes on. ☮️

AMT did a killer job on this model. With the inside the heads showing detail and the engine block shows the pistons and cylinders. Would be great for a diorama in a shop getting work done. Me being a Chevy guy makes me like it even more. Love this kit, the possibilities are endless. As always Chris is making it look great.

Funny you said that, like that, Chris. I was going to say, you single handedly kept ModPodge in business, you know darn well all of us bought ModPodge because of you, LOL! Funny thing is though, when I first bought my bottle, I didn't think about there being gloss or matte finish, I grabbed a matte one oops, I went back and got gloss, I thru matte bottle away a long time ago! I really enjoyed building this kit. Fit and finish were excellent with one exception: the hood will not close once the air cleaner is installed. I had to remove the carburetor in order for the hood to close, but otherwise an awesome kit. Oh yeah, and I built it in the same colors as yours.😁

Built this kit in its original release without the Soap Box Derby racing car in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Still have it on display and I used the hood stripes from the AMT 1970 Chevelle SS454 on it.

Great color choice. I like it when a modeler goes astray from the box art. That shows the artistic ability of the modeler. Most anyone can follow the example of the art. As always a very good build to an excellent model. This one was made with very good detail. The soap box derby car was perfect.

Lovely work on one of my favourite 1:1 vehicles! I have the last release of this kit, the c.2015 improved-reissue (no more sink marques on B pillars).
I must enquire: How in the devil did you get the interior to cooperate? I boxed - & - shelved mine, as that interior assembly was sending me to an early grave! Seats and console fit perfectly, and the dashboard, etc., went together flawlessly, but those flippin' door cards refused to stay in place; the rear 'header' panels refused to stay seated long enough for a 'cold weld', and; the dashboard has too much slack at it mounting points at the door cards' slots.
I couldn't get that hot mess to align, and stay aligned, long enough for any adhesive/cold weld to set-up!
CA glue, Tamiya Green ('Extra Thin'), Bondene [sp], clear RTV silicone on conspicuous surfaces... nothing!
    What's your secret?

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  2 роки тому +2

I guess I didn't know there was supposed to be an issue with how it all fit together. I get lucky that way a lot of the time. I don't know there is supposed to be a problem so it just works out.
I use CA glue and activator for final assemblies.
Everything fit really nice. I did forget to shove that box up into the body far enough for the pics, which many have pointed out, but I show in the sub assembly process that it fits perfectly.

Just one question - at the end when you show everything build there seems to be quite big gap on one side between body and the box at the back of the car - also quite visible when looking at the car straight from the behind (like at 56:07). I raced the soap box Derby, I really don’t think the kits Soap Box Derby car is the same scale and the model Kit. In comparison in size to my parents cars, my SBD car was much bigger.

Hi, I have a question about acrylic paint. I bought some testors acrylic paint. And it's very thin, like water. How do I fix it?

No idea, make sure it's stirred well, other than that I'm not sure you can thicken paints already in a jar.

I don't know if anyone realizes that you pay more for Tamaya tape then you do for 3M tape for auto bodies. 3m makes the Tamaya tape. I bought a 60 yard roll of 3M tape at my local Napa for $35.00 Tamaya tape is about $6.00 per 10 yard roll.

I don't use Tamiya tape or 3M tape. Thanks for the tip though. :)
