The exterior looks good. A mix of Evoque and instantly recognizable as a LR with some bits from the old Freelander 2/LR2. I like it a lot. The interior I'm not so sure. The black plastic feels drab. Clean design, but doesn't match the classy look of say the Q5 or GLK. If LR charges under $40k for this in North America, then I guess it is OK... Also fingers crossed the Ingenium (I still hate that name...and I thought Drive-E and SkyActiv was awkwardly named) would better the BMW N20 engine or if not, exceed the Ecoboost 2.0Ts. Those Ford engines might work in Economy cars, but unrefined and not as economical for a Premium make.
+David Whittaker I see your point and am relieved to hear that the "real" Disco will not be replaced. However, why the mixed up branding? I'm sure by continuing to use the Discovery moniker it is going to cause confusion in the market place.
This is replacing the Free Lander and is seen as a baby discovery and they are also using it as marketing to promote their new vehicle on the back of the Discovery brand. There will be no confusion with this.
Love it. The Freelander/LR2 needs a replacement and this is a big move forward, especially with it being the "entry" model in the entire Rover lineup. I love the no thrills interior. It is a Land Rover. No need for wanna be luxury. Great vehicle. Looking forward to testing one out myself.
I just spent £27k on a new top of the range XC70. It will wipe the floor with this Landrover. It is larger, hugely better built, handle better on and off road. I visited a Land Rover dealer : they wanted £48k with NO DISCOUNT for a Discovery Sport
STILL waiting for someone to give these a thorough off road test, not expecting miracles but it would be nice to see where it's "Capability" limits would lie.
Coming from Land Rover it will be a serious off road Vehicle but it will not be a hardcore Vehicle like the Mercedes G class or the Land Rover defender.
All these toys can't be a good thing in a Landy... We had a Disco 3 at our work recently - customer only had the car for 18 months, and in that time he'd spent over £12,000 replacing various parts that had failed... Worth noting that the car had a full main dealer / specialist service history... Hopefully they've improved the build quality since then!!!
I also had a Discovery and it broke my heart but My friends who have bought a more modern Vehicle never have problems. My wife has an Evoque and she never had any issues. I think they are over the problem phase and they have invested lots of resources into the new vehicles.
I've had the Discovery 4 for 3,5 yrs now and I've got 115.000 Kms on the clock. There have been no quality issues. No repairs. Nada.Zilch. Reliability pure. Despite this I pick up my new Discovery Sport at the end of February. By the way, where I live, in Austria the HSE (not HSE Luxury) without all extras cost € 63.000 after a 10% discount.
Cuchulain Hammilcar bighands69 Maybe they have turned a new leaf now, but we shall see how they are after 5/6 years... Hopefully the Discovery3 was the last with poor build quality. We have another Disco3 back for warranty work as the air suspension has failed! Bet it won't be cheap to fix...
Iain Murray Very frustrating for you. Let's hope the reliability issues belong to the past. As you say, time will tell. I hope the latest repairs aren't too expensive.
Cuchulain Hammilcar Thanks for your kind words - we shall soon find out as it's booked in with a specialist next week. I hope you enjoy your new Discovery Sport when it arrives :)
why do people continue to use millimeters instead of inches.....who wants to sit and count several hundred millimeters when you can just say four or five inches
You can buy a luxury suv from a company that also makes cars... and doesn't put their soul into their machine. Or you can buy a luxury suv from a company that ONLY and has ONLY ever made SUV's. SUV's that were FIRST on every continent, that have travelled to the ends of the Earth... and back. For yesterday. For today. For tomorrow. Forever. Land Rover. We love ours. Unique and quirky. Thanks LR and LR Cape Cod, Hyannis, MA.
I have gotten sick of my Discovery because of issues. But some people are saying that the new models are more reliable. Will wait and see. My daughter wants her own off road vehicle and this might do the trick but will wait.
juliadennehy:Admire your sentiment, sadly misplaced as it is. The only late model LR which could match your criteria would be a SWB Defender.I would put up a 1967 LWB Military issue Land Rover that could put any of the modern era LR's to shame. For ruggedness, simplicity, reliability and the ability to run on the most atrocious fuel, including 50% diesel, kerosene, J-fuel etc, without crapping it's self by the side of the road in some armpit area of the world. Granted, 70 mph max,(or thereabouts) but one can't have everything.::).
I wonder when LR's marketing bubble will burst? I bought my new Freelander 2 GS less than 6 years ago for £20k. They're now offering me a lower spec model in the guise of a Discovery Sport for £34k. And yet, it still has the same engine and same terrain response. Panels are a different shape and it now synchs better with my iPhone but I'm struggling to see where all the extra cost is coming from. The ever- upward pricing and luxury statements of LR vehicles will eventually catch them out with nothing at the lower end of the market representing good value for money rather than trading on a 'designer label'.
My opinion is to go for a Toyota Land cruiser because it is considered one of the best off road vehicles ever built it will easily compete with a Range rover or full Discovery. And they start at about 40k as well. They can go anywhere and in africa they along with the Hilux are the best off roaders. Now if you are not an off road person but just want something with off road capabilities then go for the Subaru forester for about 23K. What are your reasons for buying.
bighands69 Why would the two Toyota products be the best 'off-roaders' in Africa? Have you ever driven a Unimog? Africa abounds with old 4X4 vehicles and when push comes to shove, it's the driving skills of the operator which denotes the "best". Sorry to inform you, but Toyota Land Cruisers are rust buckets.
arriviste2020 Unimog? That is a full blown truck not a car and not comparable to 4x4. If you really want to go down that route we could start talking about tractors.
bighands69 Yes, a Unimog, made by Mercedes. A wide variety of models and specs. are available. People use them for anything and everything. However, not great top speed on a metalled / concrete road. All personal choice really.
bighands69 It's to replace a Range Rover (2009 model) and a Golf R32 in one car....school run, long drives ski-ing etc...no real off road bar rugby field but we like an elevated driving position....The Rangie is too big for Central London. This Discovery, I've just found out, won't be available with its new engine for another 18 months....SQ5 I think it is!!!! btw, had a Land Cruiser in Jo'burg - great great car but no fun on the road and slow with a cheap interior.
Protector of the Republic Erm, it doesnt have to be futuristic, the materials used for the center console look like they came straight out of a Mistubishi mirage.
***** Umm...no they don't. Have you even been in a Range Rover/Land Rover? Have you even touched their materials? They make some of the nicest interiors in the world. The materials look way better than those from a Mirage (but in a subtle way), and more importantly, feel 100 times better when you touch them.
Always fascinated by approach and departure angles. Assuming the idea is to not scrape your car, surely the higher angle of the two effectively becomes irrelevant.
i hear breaks down, check engine light, and requires service with a scan tool because a sensor got wet. I wonder what happens when the computer gets wet when it goes through flood waters...
Leider nützt das Panoramadach wieder nur denen die hinten sitzen und öffnen kann man es auch wieder nicht. :-( Somit ist der Discovery bei mir durchgefallen. Ich hoffe, das es beim neuen GLC oder GLE funktioniert.
All you people crying about the interior. You do get that this is basically the most base model Land Rover there is, from what I can gather. If you want all the doo dads buy a Range. It's an adventure vehicle, it is supposed to be a little bit utilitarian.
James T Kirk The interior is actually very nice as well, if people actually bothered to go look at a real one rather than viewing a UA-cam video. Much more pleasant than the boring German competition
A shame LR fell so much behind in Audio- GPS and interactive devices ! I think the offroad capabilities aren't a big selling point anymore, these times seem over....and then they put this 20 year old engine in it....sooo disappointing!
Wow, another Land Rover product that's indistinguishable from all the rest. Also, "It will pretty much get you out of any situation you find yourself in" Hmmm, ignoring the fact that it got stuck then? Terrain response ≠ off-roader
But when it snows and everyone is trapped in their house and the trains aren't running. The only cars you see on the road are Land Rovers. And they're not even struggling.
crossovers are selling well though. Did this video and stats not prove that it is more than capable off road. Isn't the discovery a real off roader. Maybe now this is out the way they can make a new defender. But how could a defender work in todays society. You can't make it glamorous. You might as well just keep the defender and make minimal updates ( like they've been doing). Its a perfect offroader already. what more can they do
They are hardly competing with an 80s Defender with this. in the same way they are not competing with a Fordson Major tractor which I would prefer to your sluggish unreliable D90 non turbo
Well their primary market are wealthy suburbanites who want to drop their kids off at school every day and drive to the beach or the ski field on the weekend, so yeah, not much use for real adventuring.
well, the Discovery sport has better wading depth than the Defender, better side angle abilities and is actually great to drive on the raod, the seat actually moves back far enough for tall people and you have room for your elbows so they are not baging into the widow frame, oh and it actually has a great heater, so yes, you keep driving your defender with ear muffs on and a heacy coat as you freeze
There were other journalist that got their Land Rovers stuck, they also went over terrain that's protected and might get sued, it will be interesting to see how that turns out.
Fannar Freyr Exactly. Plus, as you can see in the begging of the video the "off-roading" was just a dirt road and I mean, I've driven 2wd station wagon in those type of roads -.-
For an LR you will need to come up with the extra 10 to 15k to buy it. This not intended to be any type of LR vehicle. What it is doing is replacing the Freelander.
A Freelander is the LR2 in the US... Thats what I'm saying I'd rather have this vehicles predecessor, I like the LR2/Freelander considerably more. *facepalm*
FantomLightning If you want an old school manual then you will need to buy a Defender. Having a manual in a vehicle like this offers no real benefits. This vehicle like the Freelander/LR is not a hardcore off road vehicle and it will handle any type of off road for its class with the new gear selector.
Damn, you're even more off the mark than the last time... I never said I wanted a manual, how you got that from me talking about the selector for the auto is unknown to me... I'm talking about the fact that they went from a normal "lever" type gear selector in the LR2 to the rotary selector they did in the DS. What are you even talking about in the last paragraph? You go from talking about a manual, to what I can only assume is the "Terrain Response" that you're talking about with the reference to handling off road. I understand exactly what the LR2 and Discovery Sport are, my qualms have nothing to do with it's off road capability. Your lack of comprehension is slightly disturbing.
Exterior is pretty nice.....interior not so much. Way to "basic" for such a premium vehicle......the interior alone would keep me from buying this vehicle. A shame.
"best in class off road performance"?! hahaha the Cherokee Trailhawk will rip this to shreds, for a cheaper price and a much more premium interior, better HP, geometric angles, low-range 2 speed transfer case and a true lockable rear axle. and all that fully loaded for about $41K CAD. not sure about USD or other.
Noutros modelos ESQUECEM-SE. SÃO UNS IDIOTAS.
Wow, what a job being a motoring journalist. All they do is quote manufactory stats and talk crap. I wonder if they get paid well for this? Its a shame we have to listen. I have never learnt anything from these people. Jeez what a job., I am a auto tech and get paid very little for putting the cars back on the road after these guys have finished fucking with them. I know I can't spell, so don't bother......
Tim Jones: you are an Auto Tech but get paid very little money,.....are you serious? You either work for 'Pep Boy's' or a similar organization, or have questionable skill levels.Either way, there is something very wrong about yours statement.
What a down grade from the original discovery. Great sell them a freelander & make them think their getting something more. Which is merely going on the image the old discovery gave. Don't be fooled people this is a blinged up freelander. Forgot to mention that this also now makes the range rover more of a premium car which is what land rover intended. Toyota watch this space I'm moving in. (When I'm finished with my discovery 3 that is).
This vehicle replaces the Freelander, not the discovery. This is the Discovery Sport, just like you have a RR Sport. New discovery will come within 2 years.
I don't understand why vehicle manufacturers keep trying to push the idea that these little AWD minivan/crossover looking things as off road capable vehicles, the people that buy these things don't offroad so why try so hard, why not just show how many soccer balls you can fit in it or how many groceries it can fit or how easy it is to put a carseat in it maybe show how fast you can wipe shit from a poopy diaper off the floor mats LOL!!!
Respect to the cameraman. He must have been freezing his rocks off!
I choose this over any x3 all day every day
Amazing machine, the technology in it is phenomenal! Looks very good too :)
The front looks great, better even than the evoque imo
If I were to buy one, I'd probably wait for the new engines to come out first. Probably smoother and more economical.
Wat have this in 2024 and this comment aged badly! 😂
I gotta said that I like it... the dasboard is simple, it looks a little outdated, but it is practical... good for an adventure vehicle... I like it!!
i like it....and really impressed with the 7 seat option..good work LR .. hi from australia

They are starting at 30k in the UK and an X5 in the UK starts at about 42k.
The front looks good... shame about the rear end. The dash also looks kind of dated.
Exactly what I thought when I first saw it.
Handsome front, Fast and the furious 1 rear.
Yes

Whoa… Did he say its SHORTER than a Q5 but still has 7 seats!?!? Ok I have to see this for myself.
It's built on the Evoque platform, which is built on the Freelander platform. So it's just a re bodied Freelander, which is nearly 20 years old.
I just spent £27k on a new top of the range XC70. It will wipe the floor with this Landrover. It is larger, hugely better built, handle better on and off road. I visited a Land Rover dealer : they wanted £48k with NO DISCOUNT for a Discovery Sport
How do you think the reliability will be in this one ?? Better than previous one hopes !
if I want to cross the river, I should choose the mud mode of traction? or rocks?
super review
Do you get one of those jumpers with it.
Bad call if you do.

Pause the video at 2:52 ; does anyone else see an element of Mitsubishi Outlander? Just me?
Great car will suit a lot of people. I would have the interior in black though.

The x5 also has the 7 seat option.
but is much longer. 4.9m
notyetnamed89 The third row on an X5 is a joke. Not even fit for kids.
bobrown I never saw it :)
There is an X7 coming out in 2018 though with a proper third row. GL competitor.
9 SPEED AUTO!!!
Fuck me! Just a while ago, 6 was more than enough. Should get good mileage.
They're desperate to get the most they can out of the dinosaur ICE engine.
Won't be long now until ICE engines are history.
Nice sweater!
For me this and the Volvo XC60 are the best on they category
Subaru Forester is also a serious option for people as well. The Land Rover Discover sport will offer more ground clearance.
The usual Land Rover excellence. Now,about the price.....:)
it's either this or the SQ5....any thoughts? (£45k budget)

Unimog?
That is a full blown truck not a car and not comparable to 4x4. If you really want to go down that route we could start talking about tractors.

Yes, a Unimog, made by Mercedes. A wide variety of models and specs. are available. People use them for anything and everything. However, not great top speed on a metalled / concrete road. All personal choice really.

And of course UK market is not getting the petrol Si4 engine.....because LR is treating British people like children who can only be given one option.
Interior looks terrible for being a premium vehicle.
No it doesn't. It looks nice, clean and simple, both inside and out. Not overcrowded futuristic shit like most current cars look.
Protector of the Republic Erm, it doesnt have to be futuristic, the materials used for the center console look like they came straight out of a Mistubishi mirage.

hey i saw you guys in iceland
Title reads Off-Road Review, majority of the video is spent on snow covered (but paved) roads. Thanks...
Leider nützt das Panoramadach wieder nur denen die hinten sitzen und öffnen kann man es auch wieder nicht. :-( Somit ist der Discovery bei mir durchgefallen. Ich hoffe, das es beim neuen GLC oder GLE funktioniert.
Evoque with 3rd row seating.
good looking car! I hope they progressed in terms of quality, because that's where they fall way back, compared with the Germans.
Where is the off-road?
what's the name of the song?
Exposes the X3 as the ugly spud it is. Very clever that it looks big, but isn't.
They are all boring urban tractors only used for dropping the kids off at school & towing the boat anyway.
***** It's not a range rover. It is a land rover.
Matthew Sharpe Enjoy your Miata and one friend.
Much more pleasant than the boring German competition
looks like the pulled the interior out of base model honda civic
What were you expecting for 30K. Did you think it would look like a Range Rover.
bighands69 No, but even a Ford Kuga has an interior that doesn't look as cheap as this and it's £10,000 cheaper.
Billy Johnson
The interior of this car is a class above Fords how you could even compare them is mind boggling.
bighands69 I said "looks".
if you want perfect interiors go for mercer s class
I GUESS YOU HAVE TO EXPLORE BEFORE YOU DISCOVER. Get it? Because it looks like an explorer HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
....mmmnm....nice jumper....:)
There is no Landrover clues in the interior, this is a ford
A shame LR fell so much behind in Audio- GPS and interactive devices ! I think the offroad capabilities aren't a big selling point anymore, these times seem over....and then they put this 20 year old engine in it....sooo disappointing!
wont be long until you see this car on a recovery truck like the rest of the new landrover range
Wow, another Land Rover product that's indistinguishable from all the rest.
Also, "It will pretty much get you out of any situation you find yourself in"
Hmmm, ignoring the fact that it got stuck then?
Terrain response ≠ off-roader
so pretty :o
"I will take my Land Rover off road" said no LR owner ever
Ever. Plus millions of Land Rover owners take their cars off road, ever heard of the defender, or the series3,2 or 1
But when it snows and everyone is trapped in their house and the trains aren't running. The only cars you see on the road are Land Rovers. And they're not even struggling.
What a dumb comment, sorry to say !!
arkhsm ford
In reference to Nikita Ind.
TheYBGOON The only cars you see on the road are actually Subaru's, ahem.
A bigger evoque... meh. Dont get me wrong i like the styling but id prefer it if it was a real off roader. Not a crossover pretending to be one.
crossovers are selling well though.

£35k for a 2.1 litre diesel?! Not cheap, is it?
land rover have lost their ways, its now just a massive heavy wallowing lump, ill have an 80s Defender over this any day, rugged, tough and light
They are hardly competing with an 80s Defender with this. in the same way they are not competing with a Fordson Major tractor which I would prefer to your sluggish unreliable D90 non turbo

great car though
Heavy car!
Lol, they got stuck, they couldn't get out. They had to abandon these. Nothing will beat Iceland.
Ummm....

Fannar Freyr Exactly. Plus, as you can see in the begging of the video the "off-roading" was just a dirt road and I mean, I've driven 2wd station wagon in those type of roads -.-
Yes yes yes, all very good, departure angles blah, wadding depth blah, will it be RELIABLE?!! Land Rovers biggest problem.
That's what I said
So, a stupid gear selector, and either a solid roof, or glass panorama that doesn't open... I'd much rather have an LR2...

I understand exactly what the LR2 and Discovery Sport are, my qualms have nothing to do with it's off road capability. Your lack of comprehension is slightly disturbing.
bighands69 A manual is very beneficial in off road conditions.
He lost the "Discovery" soul. It looks more a "Freelander" updated.
Exterior is pretty nice.....interior not so much. Way to "basic" for such a premium vehicle......the interior alone would keep me from buying this vehicle. A shame.
C'era piu' bisogno di una nuova Defender che una nuova Freelander.Mah !!
SÃO UNS IDIOTAS.
no digital display. come on land rover wake up
Wow, what a job being a motoring journalist.
This is only really a preview as he had said and we will need to wait until it is released before we find out more.
Tim Jones: you are an Auto Tech but get paid very little money,.....are you serious? You either work for 'Pep Boy's' or a similar organization, or have questionable skill levels.Either way, there is something very wrong about yours statement.
Tt556(f
nice car but damn slow even for diesel.
Just looks like a messed up 2014 Ford Escape....
'''''''
Why does the USA only get the sh*t gas engine? We want 44 mpg diesels!
Just pick a mercedes g class
puny vehicle
Maybe vary the pitch of your voice a bit..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
that wash rubbish that was not offroad in iceland next time take the car into Þórsmörk at winter time then you are off road for real
Land Rover really fucked up the interior design with this Disco sport...
I'm sorry. I can't take a guy seriously who talks as improperly as he does.
"Bofe of voze fings"
Ugh... Shudder. Like nails down a blackboard.
Looks dreadful
