Hi, thank you for video, I have a question abouth 291 and 271 differences, both have same price and weigh, but 291 have 55cm piston and 3.80hp, 271 have 50cm andı 3.60, why both are exect same weight, is 271 more durable or better quality?
Interesting - around here the MS291 is about $50 more than the 271. As far as more durability - I've never owned a 291, so I'm not sure about that. I would imagine the quality of both saws is similar, as they're both home/ranch grade saws. I am really liking my new MS261 pro-grade saw. If you can swing it, it's much more bang for the buck - and lighter weight! ua-cam.com/video/6moK2c9OzZk/v-deo.html
You saw it! I never noticed it when running the saw in this video. I also never noticed it when editing the video. But a few days later, I noticed the saw was missing the cover screw. I had to go to my local Stihl dealer and get a replacement. Good eyes!
Great video chat. I never knew about that summer/winter baffle until GP's video this week, and now here it is again! Glad to see you got it up and running again. 👍😎👍
My MS 271 has finally started having a bit of an idle problem and havent needed to look into maintenance until recently but your video helped a lot! Thanks
Thanks 👍 I like to do my own maintenance when possible. This was certainly an easy saw to perform this maintenance on. Yes - the deer love our back yard.
Good evening Sir 👍😉 Please do have a good work habit to remove your expensive watch and rings ( you will be happy the day your deal fuel spill on the watch or electric shock spart on your ring ) 🙏🧐 Great maintenance video Sir 😉👍🧐 You have a better performance and less prone to freeze when it is cold with you new air filter Sir 👍🧐💪 You should grease also that roller bearing on the clutch ( crank shaft ) Great video Sir and great video of your deer Cheers 🍻👌😉
@@PurpleCollarLife Is it that important to know the time ??? Especially when you are doing fun stuff 👌😉 Human know the time, you just have to look for it. How come dogs, know when you will return from work ? 🧐😉👌 Food for thought Sir Cheers 🍻
Glad it's fixed,a saw that doesn't work is a major bummer! The old filter looked great, and when a spark arrestor is bad,you won't be able to see through it (for future reference). If an arrestor is clogged,it can easily be cleaned with a propane torch, there are videos that will show you how. Stay warm, and happy cutting!
Thanks! Based on how they looked (spark arrestor and fuel filter and air filter) - I'm guessing it was a fuel issue or the spark plug. But the plug didn't look too bad.
I know - I wish I knew exactly what the problem was. But I just wanted to get it all done to make sure that we eliminated whatever the issue was. I'm glad it's running good now!
@PurpleCollarLife thanks for the update,,but very odd. Carbs are set perfect from the factory and it's usually something clogging the carb, a tank vent, or just plain bad gas.
Chad, glad it came back to work! I went through both of mine a month ago… it’s great to have them in tip-top shape. Just curious… does your scrench not fit the spark plug?
Thanks! They're both running great now (MS271 and MS290 Farm Boss). The scrench does fit the spark plug - I just prefer the extension of the socket wrench when I'm working near my toolbox.
Awesome video Chad I have a 271 also and when I do a tune up on mine in the future I will consult your video. Really liked the music you played when it started running good again. Keep up the great work
I keep a toothbrush in my case to clean up the machine after use. Takes up little space and makes quick work of cleaning off sawdust, even in the narrow gaps.
This is a great tip! I tend to wear my toothbrush down to nothing before I replace it. But maybe I'll toss my 1/2 way worn one into the chainsaw case and treat myself to a new toothbrush early! :)
Probably not an issue with your newer looking saw but sometimes the fuel line itself can collapse thereby restricting fuel at full throttle. Especially if ethanol gas is used or especially if left in saw.
Very good video Chad. In the 5 years I've had my 271 Farm Boss I've not flipped the orange gate for winter mode. I have run the saw on sub 32 degree days without any noticeable issues. After watching your vid I've decided to try it and see if I can tell a difference.
I wonder too. I could have done one thing at a time and determined it that way -but I really just wanted to do everything I could to get it running. If I had to guess, it wasn't the spark arrestor for sure. It was clean. And the fuel filter looked clean, as well. The air filter looked clean - but since it was that felt kind - it's hard to tell. I'm guessing it was just the gas or the spark plug. I doubt that it was actually the coagulated bar and chain oil - but I suppose that may have played a role?
Thanks for the advice. I have never had one that was a problem (spark arrestor). And I thought that they needed to stay in to prevent potential forest fires?
I’d love to see a video on how to replace the fuel tank vent valve. I’ve looked all over UA-cam and haven’t found one on the ms271. It’s located on the top, back side of the fuel tank.
Were you able to get it started? Maybe it is just flooded? Mine got flooded today and saw a video in UA-cam where you put it on run instead of choke and put your knee on the saw. Then just keep pulling and around 15 or 20 pulls it starts. Basically forcing air to it.
Why does everyone replace spark plugs so often? In a car they last 100k miles or longer!
I think fuel injection and the fact that cars run on gasoline that isn't mixed with oil helps the spark plugs last longer.
Nice job, Chad. You've reminded me to switch my Stihl to winter mode! Cheers!
Right on! Thanks for watching!
I had no idear there was a summer and winter mode 😂
Glad we could show you something new! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I'm pretty sure you either had water in your gas tank or you just needed to switch it to winter mode
Thanks for watching!

Looks like one of the engine cover screws is loose... you can see it bouncing around while cutting

Wait - I didn't see GPs video about it! He stole my idea! :)
Well, I'm pretty dense...I need to hear something 4 or 5 times before finally sinks in so It's probably for the best!
😉😄🤣
Great video - looks like the deer are thankful - enjoy the journey - cheers
Thanks 👍
Why didn’t my 271 farm boss come with the “farm boss bar”?
Great question! My 290 came with the farm boss bar, my 271 came with it, and I added a 20 inch bar and they gave me a Farm Boss bar for that one too.
My MS 271 has finally started having a bit of an idle problem and havent needed to look into maintenance until recently but your video helped a lot! Thanks
Glad to help.
Glad you were able to.get.it.fixed! Great video for people doing their own Maintenance! Thise Deer were having a Hay day!
Thanks 👍 I like to do my own maintenance when possible. This was certainly an easy saw to perform this maintenance on. Yes - the deer love our back yard.
I haven't done any of this since I bought my saw 4.5 years ago.... I guess I'm due!!!! Thanks for the video Chad!
No problem! It's a nice rainy day activity.
I'm about to tradeup to a farm boss. Thank you.
Have fun! Thanks for watching.

Guessing your gas was bad as nothing else looked vary bad at all.
Ended up that it needed to go to the shop. They were able to adjust the carburetor and it made all the difference!

Runs like a champ! 👍😎🪚🔧🪵 Great work!
Yes it does!

Cool, thanks!
Good meeting you at Messick's a few weeks ago!! Finally found your channel!
Welcome aboard!
my 170 was doing that I just went an bought a new carb the carb is super cheap an Bing runs like new
Thanks for sharing!

Looks like that chain is a bit dull lol instead of chips it looks like it's throwing more like sawdust.
That chain could certainly use a touch up. I was just glad it was not dying out any more! :) I'll sharpen it up for some real cutting.
That fuel filter went in easy, i never get ghat lucky lol. Great job.
Thanks! It's the first time I've ever replaced the fuel filter in a saw. I thought maybe they're always that easy. :)
Might want to clean screen on your carburetor, still sounds boggy.
Thanks - it's running great now. It actually needed a better carburetor cleanout. My Stihl dealership fixed it up in less than an hour.
Great video...thanks. Time to tune up the farm boss! Orange gate for winter mode...who knew!
Thanks for watching. I didn’t know it until about a year ago.
Probably not an issue with your newer looking saw but sometimes the fuel line itself can collapse thereby restricting fuel at full throttle. Especially if ethanol gas is used or especially if left in saw.
It's pretty new, but I did replace that fuel line. They're inexpensive and easy to do. I do always avoid using any Ethanol gasoline.
Thank you for the information. Now I'll have do it myself next time
Glad that it was helpful!
Nice work
Thanks for the visit
The orange bar oil is the best it don't gel up it gets thicker but when the saw warms up the case warms the oil tank.
I agree. I like the orange bottle of Stihl bar and chain oil better than the grey bottle

Let us know! I do think it warms up more quickly in "winter mode".
I’ve had good success with Tru Fuel as well. It’s a little cheaper as well.
Thanks for the info! Is that something you buy at a local hardware store? I don't know if I've ever seen it at the Stihl dealer near our house.
Good information. Wonder what the problem was?

No problem 👍
Take the spark arrestor out, soon after the warranty expires.
Thanks for the advice. I have never had one that was a problem (spark arrestor). And I thought that they needed to stay in to prevent potential forest fires?
Thanks for the vid, mine needs a 5 year tune up as well.
Glad it helped

Great suggestion! I've never had to replace mine. Do they clog over time?
@@PurpleCollarLife yes, it causes them to bog down. And, you can never get the carb adjusted out.
Good job, fun to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work, Chad. I'm glad you got it off the deadlined list.
Me too! Thanks for watching! I hope you're doing okay.
Doing good! Just trapped in the house with all this rain here. At least I can watch you working in snow! :) Thanks for checking

Great video! Looks like a fine saw
It is!
Easy fix!
It was!
Great video, thanks!
Glad it helped!
Good fix! The tune up did the trick!
Runs great!
does the plug come pre-gapped ?
You should always check the gap to make sure it's right for your application. In my case, the gap was correct for this saw straight out of the box.
Well done maintenance video.
Thanks! It was easy.
My ms271, won’t start need help. Thank you anyone out there
Hopefully you get some feedback! Are you getting spark at the spark plug? Have you changed ou the fuel filter in the tank?
Purple Collar Life I did all that still not start

Peter Fider no. But clean the carb now it work but sound kind bad
😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻✌🥇
Thanks!
Nice job on the tuneup
Thanks, Larry! It's still running great.
Glad you got it up and running
