Thanks for triggering my OCD, I now must go and remove that clutch/ oil pump cover and clean my baby, but unlike you, I WILL clean the dirt from behind the plastic chain guide near the chain catcher before reinstalling the guide. 😂 Top job Erica, clear, concise and informative video as always.

I have three Stihl saws, the largest is a O29 Super Farm Boss. I keep them clean. One of the three are very old, and today they appear to have never been used. They get pressure washed after each use. I don't spray near the carb. Remember, if water can enter the oil and fuel tanks, oil and fuel can leak from them from within. Also, I never let any other person use any of my saws. My father always told me, "If you don't care and clean anything you own." no one else will'.

I'm a novice chainsaw repair guy. Hobby mostly. I watch you for Stihl, "The Greasy Shop Rag" for Husqvarna and "Leon's Chainsaw Parts and Repair" for Homlite. Thanks for your informative videos, you've helped me a lot over the past year or so.

The missing parts make me think it’s one of those “I tried to fix it, but made it worse” kind of things.

We don;'t run our saws often but when we do we run them hard. I "try" to do a spa day at least once a year, with a thorough break down and cleaning with each saw. Great no nonsense video with a ton of info.

I must admit, although I like the saws to be clean, all too often they are put away to cool an the day/task is done. And less cleaning occurs than was intended. I do need to consider compressed air, however it a tight basement walk path, trying to keep the debris contained is a challenge. Thank you for the video, Ericka.

Hello, I am an industrial mechanic and I find your video very interesting and informative it is almost a mechanics course. Every time I repaired a chain saw I always checked the maximum speed and adjusted the high speed mixture as a consequence, I didn't see you do this adjustment is there something I didn't understand? Thank you for your videos!

I’m pretty new to Stihl repair, and this channel has already helped me countless times. Hoping for some tips and tricks for my newest issue if anybody is feeling helpful. Customer returned a BR350 after 3days and the boss caved and gave them a new one, told me to refurb the old one. I found the piston, plug, and exhaust caked in carbon, but everything else is pristine - looks like they mixed in too much oil. New plug, cleaned spark arrestor and muffler. Idles great, but at WOT it hiccups a lil bit. Can I do anything to clean the carbon from the piston? Any other advice? Thanks so much for any advice y’all have for me.

I had 1 of those given to me, blown up. Looked brand new but no compression. Upon inspection it had a lot of dirt ingestion. Whether or not those had air filter problems I have no idea. It's filter was a twist lock type & it was filthy on the inside as well as the carb was. I wasn't about to rebuild it as the cost was more than half the replacement cost. Just a heads-up!

Thanks for sharing another great video. In an upcoming video could you show the end of the piston stop that goes into the spark plug hole - wonder if the end is hard rubber glued or wrapped around the piece of metal or if it is all metal. I usually use a piece of starter rope but the piston stop looks like it would be quicker to set in place and remove than trying to force a rope into the top of the piston. The condition of the saw is a good example of where some of the operators who have no investment in the tool they are using and no incentive to do proper maintenance so the owners (in this case probably the taxpayers of a municipality) don't have to repair or replace it prematurely but on the other hand good for business.
Will also offer you a suggestion for when you are picking dirt and crud out from a chainsaw and it lands on the work bench such as you did in this video. Rather than using a rag to wipe the crud into a garbage pail which tends to drive the crud into the work bench top and any cracks in it as you press down on the rag you might consider getting a dust pan and brush set such as the Rubbermaid FG6C0100 (just an example) where the brush clips into the pan handle and hang it under your work bench in easy reach. When the need arises you can then brush the dirt and crud into the dustpan and dump it into the garbage pail, give it a quick wipe if necessary and hang it back up. You could also set down a piece of cardboard or an old cookie baking sheet to place the saw on so the crud goes on top of it rather than the work bench - only suggestions for an easier way to keep your work bench area clean. Have a great day.

Hi Erica. At the 9 minute mark in the video, you said that you were taking it out to the door to spray it off and get it all cleaned up. Are you spraying it with some type of de-greaser or just using air? I have seen on another channel de-greaser used but I wasn't really sure if that was an OK thing to use.

Is there supposed to be nylon chain guide bumpers above the bar studs on the inside of the chain cover? I know on the MS290 there are four of them to help guide the chain in the chain case. Could be a possible reason for chain derailment?

Ah, most chainsaws do have a bit of sawdust and oil on them, it goes with the territory. On the other end of the spectrum we have people who clean the chainsaw chain and make youtube videos about how they clean their chainsaw chain, taking the anal retention to new levels. Each to their own.
