Stihl MS271 is my first chainsaw. I've never use a chainsaw before and after 50 hours of use; it feels natural. I use a friend chainsaw and realize how good the Stilh chainsaw is!
I bought a 271 in 2021. I have had a lot of trouble starting it. I bought this very expensive saw so I would not have starting issues like I have had with the no name saws I had been using. The no name saws when they gave me issues starting were still better then this Stihl 271. I am not very happy that I spent this much money and still have the same starting issues. When I take it back to the Stihl dealer local I am always told that it was only flooded.
Sell the stihl go buy a husqvarna 455 rancher I've had mine for 15 yrs.or more, very rarely does it take more than one pull to start. You just pull the choke button which automatically turns the kill switch on, you dont have to fool around with different settings. Plus when you run it out of gas after refueling all you have to do is pump the primer to get gas back in your carb, Not endlessly crank on it . Lastly it will take a 24 inch bar, and has better fuel/oil caps, a decompression button, adjustable oiler, and metal clutch cover/sideplate. ( make sure to unlock your chain brake before taking the sideplate off ) It also screams on top end compared to a ms 271. Tractor supply has the 455 on sale for 450.00 right now, Huskys are just easier to start especially in cold weather. I have freinds with the ms271, I'm sawing while they crank on theirs, secretly wishing they had bought a husky.
This is my first chainsaw, got it two years ago. I maybe use it 2 to 3 times a year. About the chain brake and running in high idle. After owning the saw for a year, a tree fell into in my neighbor property, it was a very cold day (single digits), i tried to run my saw but it kept shutting off when i put into normal idle. I got frustrated and left it in high idle with the brake. I went inside thinking the saw needed to warm up after a few minutes, it shut off. Went back outside, smelled a burning plastic smell. Tried to pull the rope and it was stuck. Learned the hard way. Took my saw back to the store and see what could be done. Called Stihl, explained to the rep what happened and what I have done. The rep kindly replaced the saw for being honest about the situation, normally they would not replace the saw. Lesson learned. Great saw.
I have four other Stihl saws. Two pole saws and two demolition saws. Stihl seems to use better parts for their fuel lines, carb diaphragms and shaft seals, so they keep running long after the cheaper saws need maintenance. They all start right up. Some of them are quite old, but I've never had to work on any of them. So I had a job about six weeks ago that needed to be done right away and my only working regular chainsaw was too small. I have an old 60cc saw, but was waiting on parts to ressurrect it. So I bought an MS271. I've had other saws with similar starting procedures, so I was aware of it, but the new 271 gave me the devil's own time getting started the first time. I tried every trick I knew and eventually gave up for the day. The next morning it started right up with the same procedure, and has started up easily ever since. It cuts well, maybe as well as the old 60cc Sears/Poulan from the '80s. We'll find out when I get it rebuilt.
I bought my first Stihl chainsaw in 1993. An 029 Farmboss. It continues to perform well. Just purchased a 271 yesterday, ran it today. Great saw! Appreciate the refresher course with your video.
I got my first Stihl in about 1996 when I worked in a small engine shop,it was an 028 Super that was made in 1985 and I still run it today.I currently have an MS 171,an 021,028,MS 271,and an MS 460. I really like my Stihls!!!
First new saw was 028 Super 30 years ago. Well maintained and runs and looks great. Clean saws then store in cases. Motomix is excellent choice when storing OPE.
Dude! What a great video! Just picked up this specific saw today cause huge wind storm last knocked down two trees in my back yard and my little electric limb trimmer was not going to cut it with these big trees. This is my first Stihl. After reading through the manual thoroughly and watching this video, I feel ready to rip and saw. Thank you!
Majority of the fire service runs Stihl, when i started as a volunteer was my first experience using them and I just bought my own this year…awesome video thank you
Great video! Thank you. Just bought my first Stihl. Bought our property 26 years ago. Bought a home lite 16 inch at that time. Have trimmed a lot of trees and cut a mountain of firewood with that little guy. Has always started and run flawlessly. That being said, I had no idea what I was missing until I bought the 271. Can’t wait to get out and make a pile of chips !
Bought an MS 250 about 10 years ago after an ice storm took down some large limbs in our yard. It's been a great little saw. We now own about 60 acres of land, and have MANY more trees, some will need to come down, much firewood to cut...so, I just bought the MS 271 to give me the ability to take care of larger stuff as needed. I used it just for a little bit about a month ago, but looking forward to putting it through its paces.
That’s amazing. This is also my second saw and the ms170 was also my first. I’m literally speechless. But I can still type. Or should I say, stihl type.
About 4 years ago I finally got tired of dealing with, pulls a lot chainsaws, better known as Poulan. I broke down and spent the extra money on a Stihl ms271. Best brand ever.
First saw was an old pioneer holiday next was a stil 034,next 029farm boss(still running like a champ) and just got a MS271 about 2years ago great saw as well………the 034 is in saw heaven
The reason why I switched from Stihl to huskies is exactly because huskies just start immediately... My actual 550xp starts way easier than my former MS261.
Just bought my 1st new Stihl 2 days ago. I've had used old ones but never a brand new one. The MS271 is a power house for sure. Great saw with a 20" bar use fresh ethanol free fuel and quality saw oil and it'll last me a lifetime
Be careful with that. If you forget to “undo” winter mode you can do some damage. We have found that down to 32°F you are fine without changing the shutter. When do you flip yours?
My first saw was a Husqvarna 385xp. It was a beast. Running a290 now. About to get a271 this week. I would like to get something more than a weekend warrior model but with all the choices I don’t know. We have 6 acres in central Texas and I run pretty hard most of the time. Any suggestions would help ❤
I seen a review where this person showed how the sprocket melted around it,because he didn't release the brake at full throttle. I have owned stihl products for years and I have tried other brands just because I felt like wasting money i guess. My wife asked me what I wanted for my 70th birthday and said I want a stihl ms 271 chainsaw. I have a 170 and before I had retired i bought a new stihl chainsaw and for the life of me can't remember the size. In fact I only got to use it once and sold it.
I'm pretty sure my farm boss I just bought has a 16" bar. I really want to swap it to a 20" bar. Should I be able to simply swap that out with no problem?
I know a man that was a logger and the chain got him across the top of his leg it was nasty big scar and a different man that he was cutting up high above his head on a small branch and caught him up the forehead and left a nasty scar. Chaps are a good idea and head protection cause there is always the unexpected that happens. I was 12 when I ran a giant bow saw and I was not even strong enough to carry it far but the weight of it was good enough to cut for me.
I bought a Ms 250c for 100$ bought it's dying gonna buy a 271 in probably in a week or so. I converted the flywheel and chain tensioner to a standard 250.
I have heard rumors does the 271 have and adjustable oiler. And will the 261 clutch cover fit on a 271 I just bought mine yesterday trying to upgrade it a little bit. Thanks
Husqvarna 455 rancher is the better saw, especially if you want to put a 24 inch bar on it. Either husky will start better than the stihl. The 455 has more options than the 450.
Great video buddy nobody knows how long non ethanol or ethanol free fuel really lasts we know ethanol fuel is 30 days what's your opinion take care my friend 😊
Even with a fuel treatment fuel still loses its firepower, I personally try to keep it under 3 months and have had no problems. There are so many factors that can change the outcome.
If my says are not being used for over a month or two, I would remove all the gasoline mixture and put in tru - fuel and run the saw five minutes or so then allow it to cool off totally and loosen the chain which releases the tension Off the tip of the bar and clutch.
I have only bought Sthil saws and this saw is the worse saw I have ever owned. I have a MS 270C and it is by far a better saw than the 271. The 271 boggs and it is less than a year old. It has done this since the day I bought it. TOO MUCH EPA CRAP
Stihl MS271 is my first chainsaw. I've never use a chainsaw before and after 50 hours of use; it feels natural. I use a friend chainsaw and realize how good the Stilh chainsaw is!
The difference is real for sure

Thank you I bought a 271 recently. Your video helps with the basic parts and how to start it. I'll definitely practice this week.

Awesome. And it’s a real saw!
Nice video. This is my second Saw, my first being a ms 170. I actually was forcing the switch up thank you for the video brother
Don’t worry it’s a common mistake on the switch. Glad we can help
Are you enjoying the power of the 271?
That’s amazing. This is also my second saw and the ms170 was also my first. I’m literally speechless. But I can still type. Or should I say, stihl type.
Been using an 028 forever. Bought the Farm Boss last year. Very happy with it
About 4 years ago I finally got tired of dealing with, pulls a lot chainsaws, better known as Poulan. I broke down and spent the extra money on a Stihl ms271. Best brand ever.
Just got a Farm Boss today! Wow, so light, but so powerful! Love it!
You forgot to mention the summer/winter shutter when you had the cover off
Great overview. Looking forward to using my 271
From a MS271 owner great video
What size starter rope?

Great video… useful information as always. Thank you.

Don’t forget the summer/winter slide out.
Be careful with that. If you forget to “undo” winter mode you can do some damage. We have found that down to 32°F you are fine without changing the shutter.
When do you flip yours?
Thank You!!! Great Tutorial!!

Sounds like the 500i would be the right saw for you.
Can I put a 24" bar on one of those? It came with 20". Cutting large diameter trees is a pain with it.
The ms 271 will not take a 24 bar, a husqvarna 455 rancher will though.
How do you clean the carburetor
By removing it and opening it up, using carb cleaner, replacing gaskets and diaphragms and reassembling. Taking care to clean inlet screen and jets.
Thanks Great Video
Really enjoy my 271
Great video, thanx.

Former stihl guy here. The over engineered gas/oil flip caps, turned me into a husky fan. I sure miss the old stihls.
How do you like the new Husqvarna flip caps?
Another great video!! 😎👍🏼👍🏼
Love the encouragement.
Great video. No BS.
I'm pretty sure my farm boss I just bought has a 16" bar. I really want to swap it to a 20" bar. Should I be able to simply swap that out with no problem?
Nice video! We just did a video about a problem we’re having with our 271.
Yeah that saw has a fuel problem. How long had it sat? Almost sounds internal carb. Hopefully you didn’t let your MS271 down.
Those funnels be nice but its to bad they don't have caps for them so you don't have to take them on and off all the time

Not yet
@@3116Cat it’s a step in price. But weight vs 250 is the right there and power is 1hp more. It will run a 20”
I'm gonna buy stihl 271 probably tonight it's new but used
I have heard rumors does the 271 have and adjustable oiler. And will the 261 clutch cover fit on a 271 I just bought mine yesterday trying to upgrade it a little bit. Thanks
First time owning a stihl saw I’ve owned husqi and homelite
Who is better husqvarna 450 or stihl 271 ?
Husqvarna 455 rancher is the better saw, especially if you want to put a 24 inch bar on it. Either husky will start better than the stihl. The 455 has more options than the 450.

I agree the 271 sounds bogged down compared to a husky 455 on top end.
