From Jaws (1975): When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

The irony in this scene is that Quint dies the same death that he describes in his Indianapolis Speech.
His friend Herbie Robinson had been bitten in half below the waist. Quint died by being bitten in half below the waist.

Sad scene we all know we loved Quint in a way believe it or not he was my favorite jaws character
Chief Brody did avenge Quint by shooting the air tank in the shark’s mouth which exploded the shark.

My grandfather let me watch this movie with him when I was 6 years old and then took me to the beach.

@@diegofavaratozfilms962 yes. Almost needed the brown swimming trunks. I later went on to become a certified diver for a few years but a minor shark attack ended my water days for good.
When you realize the true villain was that air tank that rolled onto quint’s hand
But then it redeemed itself when it blew up and killed the shark.

My parents still talk about how people gave standing ovations in theaters when the shark was killed. I've never seen a standing ovation in a theater. Really cool.
They clapped twice!! Everyone roared out of their seats when the shark was finally killed. They cheered. Then everyone sat back down and watched the end credits till it says.. "The End" then they would cheer and applaud again.
I remember seeing one during screening of Rocky IV in 1985!!! atmos was electric
The way Quint struggles and flails about while sliding right into the shark’s mouth is nightmare fuel 😳 just imagine the terror he must have felt in those moments
I mean Quint is this rugged, unshakable alpha male type character throughout the film, and to see him terrified and screaming for his life in that scene is just so crazy

Quint had survived the sharks after his ship was torpedoed in 1945, but would be killed by one in peacetime thirty years later.
What I find terrifying is that Quint was "the guy" to hunt sharks at Amity Island, and for Brody to see him devoured by the shark before his eyes, leaving him left alone in a sinking boat with the shark waiting for him, knowing he is next if he doesn't kill it. That's some kind of terror
What makes this scene so terrifying is the fact that there is NO music which makes the scene all the more realistic not to mention that it all happened so sudden and so fast! Shark lands on boat, boat tilts, Hoopers air tank causes Quint to lose his grip and he's to heavy for Brody to get a firm grasp and the rest is history in less than 2 minutes!!!!!! 😳😳
0:42 lets not forget the reason THIS is happening is because the giant fish outsmarted them for two days. The triumphant shot of Jaws dismantling the puny human's boat is awesome.
Which made Roy's ad-lib even better as Quint ignored his advice and ended up regretting it somewhat
The lack of music in this scene made the atmosphere all the more terrifying
The way he panics as he’s helplessly sliding towards the shark’s open mouth has always haunted me. Imagine being in that situation 😱
This was one of the craziest movie shark attacks ending with Roy Scheider truly being the underdog and how Bruce jumps up and takes down the transom and the Orca and how Quint meets a messed up end.
The shark (Bruce is not the actual name of the shark, it’s a production joke).

Quint was my favorite character simply because of his attitude, charisma, and his priorities. He may have been an asshole to Hooper but in the end he was the one who knew what he was doing and acted the way he did just because that’s the way he is. In the biggest moments his command was effective. And overtime got along with Hooper. Quint reminds me of my Poppop, he served in the US Coast Guard and knew just about anything there was know, the stories he tells are just as imaginable as Quint’s stories. Whether you were there or not he could describe them and he could just Depict them in your head. The ocean costal life that Quint lived is much similar to my Poppop. My Poppop is a great leader just like Quint! So sad the first time I had ever watched this movie that Quint’s name when translated to Spanish means “Fifth” (Quinto) meaning he would be the sharks fifth victim, is even more sad😢 RIP Quint. Fly high brother 🫡☝️☁️
I wasn't ready to see this film the first time I saw it as a 10 year old kid on VHS in the 90s. Quints death in particular is almost surreal and very disturbing. He's a guy who survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis where so many of his brothers in arms were eating alive by sharks only to meet the same fate years later as an older man. Basically Quint cheated death only for it to come back and claim him. His haterd for sharks and his determination to kill so many as some kind of revenge ended up to be his downfall.

Robert Shaw said in an interview in 1974, that he had to shoot his death scene 14 times!! Good God!

Quints death is by far the most horrible,I remember watching it as a 6 year old and many sleepless nights followed and thought that the sharks jaws where chewing on Quints belly even while the man was still alive and stabbing stabbing the shark himself (what strength)and finally it bites down, down even harder and kills him finally what a way to go there are so many scenarios I've heard heard people say about how he could have been safely away from the shark,horrifying
I was ten years old when I first saw this scene. I remember being froze in the movie theatre stunned. Had never seen something like this in a movie before.
0:03 - 0:24 Those old analogue sounds. Studios don’t seem to know how to make sounds this crisp anymore, or in many cases they forget about the smaller, cute sounds which make all the difference.
They don't even forget. They purposely forego it. They can easily make those sounds sound just as great, but they ignore those details because focus groups find newer generations have shorter attention spans, so they figure that you have to keep their attention with zingers and action and that moments like this would be monotonous and lose interest. And since that's money saved, it's money earned.

A sibling of mine took me to see this movie in the theatre when I was 9!
Why do I feel like most of this should've been offscreen so we didn't have to see this? I wish we were like Chief Brody (when he looks away).
What stuns me about the current remastered audio edition which this clip is from, is someone thought it was a good idea to change the sound effects of everything in this scene, Quint's death right up to the shark being destroyed, EVERYTHING in the audio has been changed and diluted from the original mono sound which was ten times better. It won the Oscar for BEST SOUND for god's sake! Thankfully i have the option of selecting the original mono 2.0 on the menu which i do everytime on my blu ray copy.

To an extent, Quint's death here is parallel to the saying "a good captain always goes down with his ship". He hunted sharks for a living and it seemed like fate that he was going to be eaten by a shark and that his boat would also go down with him.

If you think about it, if hooper didn't stay in hiding and retrieved his sharkspear this could have been an easy opening for him to poison the shark while it was above water
And even sadder, Robert Shaw the actor of Quint actually died in real life by a heart attack, I feel very bad, RIP for Robert

(The cage rises to the surface as Brody and Quint see that the cage is empty. The Chief stares down at the cage sadly as Quint stares at something swimming towards them. The shark arrives, opens its jaws and crushes the transom. Brody retreats inside, but Quint falls onto his back, the back of the boat about to be submerged. Brody hangs on to the steering wheel and Quint hangs on to a table as the floor tilts. One of Hooper's compressed air tanks rolls over Quint's hand, losing his grip)
(Quint) Aah!
(Brody reaches out his hand and Quint takes it, but due to the Chief's wet hand, the sea captain falls away from Brody's grasp. Quint slides down the boat, right into the shark's chomping jaws. Quint kicks his feet desperately, but the shark's teeth sink into the sea captain's legs)
(Quint) Aah!
(Brody catches himself on the doorway and watches in horror as the shark shakes Quint back and forth, the lower half of his body inside the shark's mouth. Brody looks away as the shark bites down Quint's abdomen, causing the sea captain to spit blood from his mouth before the shark drags Quint away. Brody backs away as the door suddenly closes)

Although this movie is great and this scene is horrific and scary (especially back in the day). It really doesnt make sense. The boat was not tilted in any kind of way that would have him slide at all (i get its just a movie)...but i think he had the advantage with his feel and legs kicking Bruce. In the position he was in he had the ability (and it really showed) that he could push off Bruce).
Again, its just a movie and i know, but it does eat away at me knowing he didnt have to die like that 😂😂😂

No overbearing music/soundtrack at this scene. Made it all the more horrible just hearing quint scream and then silence.
