@@bad2dabohn1992 when Hooper runs down the ladder and John Williams music takes off to start the shark hunt it is just so fabulous . The film takes flight. It reaches another level
1:47 the suspense building up, with the music playing, as the shark's slowly swimming towards them with the fin breaking the surface just gives me goosebumps like always.
1:48 This here is one of the greatest villain introductions ever on screen! I know the shark has appeared a couple of times before this, but when this music plays and Bruce begins approaching, I get chills all the way up my spine!! The villain has come to challenge the heroes, in the same way as Dracula, after he claimed a number of victims. As Bruce circles the boat, it's his way of saying "Alright, you fools. You've brought it on yourselves!" Bruce is done hiding. He WANTS them to see him! It's at this point the heroes know that the battle has begun and they must stop him, even if it means sinking to the bottom of the sea!
Yeah the build up of the shark to this point throughout the film has led to this moment and makes the actual confrontation of what they’re facing “a 25 ft 3 ton great white with malice and will” all the more powerful and threatening,
I completely agree! Jaws is my favorite movie of all time and I consider it a work of perfection!! Bruce is one of my favorite movie villains of all time as well! He's not a maniacal mad scientist or a crazed slasher villain with an arbitrary motive! He's just an animal with an overwhelming instinct to devour! He has no empathy, no reasoning, and no feelings whatsoever!
Edited with what they had. It was supposed to go down way differently, but due to issues they had to change things up. Show less of the shark, build tension. What came of it shows why Speilberg is one of the masters - he made gold with what he could do.
I hate when people try to create fake “facts” about movies to somehow make the scene “better” in their eyes. Usually it’s centered around wanting an actor’s reaction to be genuine or real, like it would somehow validate the scene. It’s called ACTING you big doofus. and the scene of Roy jumping back and walking would have been different takes done over several days.
@@JetConvoy Fyi. Roy's famous reaction shot was filmed two weeks after the shark surfacing. People seem to think that what they're watching is one continuous moment. When they shoot his reaction shot the shark isnt even involved
@ Universal please keep flooding us with the 4k clips this film is almost 50 years old but the suspense and longevity is timeless!! There wouldn’t be a shark week without Jaws🦈
When it first aired on TV, the "with yourself" was removed. I recall it vividly because I taped it with an audio cassette recorder and listened to the movie endlessly. They also changed "Foreground my ass" to "Foreground my eye!"
I can't marvel enough at the way Spielberg edits John Williams music into his films. That harpsicord rake at 2:10 when you see the full size of the shark for the first time is epic no matter how many times you watch this.
Spielberg was smart to only suggest the shark until well over half the move was done. Makes the firs view that much scarier. I saw it in the theater when it first came out, and the entire audience jumped out of its collective skin.
Jaws is a masterpiece. One of the all-time great films in cinematic history, and in my opinion, Spielberg's best. It lacks the syrupy sentimentality common to many of his later movies.
The fact that Robert Mattey's mechanical shark barely worked actually helped Jaws work so well as a horror movie. As a shark, Bruce is supposed to be elusive and mysterious. A massive predator that can strike out of nowhere with ferocity. It's a good thing that the shark is rarely seen because it really escalates the tension.
JAWS is not a Horror movie. Not even close. It's an adventure movie and Spielberg directed it as such. Spielberg himself made it very clear that Jaws is not a Horror movie.
Bruce was never scheduled to be used for the beach scenes though. They were all filmed May to early July 1974. Bruce was not scheduled to be used until the Orca based scenes. The shark is hidden in the first half of the film on purpose. The very first shark incident filmed was the pier/holiday roast scene. This was filmed in late May, in just 3 ft of water. They never had any intention of using Bruce for it. Far more of Bruce was supposed to be shown during the Orca scenes but not for the beach scenes. The first half of Jaws was filmed more or less on schedule. It was the Orca based scenes where it all went wrong. 👍
@@lyndoncmp5751 If I remember correctly, they were originally planning to show the shark in full when it attacks Alex Kintner (there's a photo where you see the shark launch its head out to eat him) but they thought that was too disturbing
The elusiveness of the shark was in the script it was not a result of it not working. The use of the barrels without seeing the shark was in the screenplay
Jaws is one my favorite childhood movies ever. I wasn’t even scared of the shark or the movie itself. Spielberg did a fantastic job directing this movie 47 years ago
Everyone talks about Brody’s reaction to seeing the shark for the first time, but not enough people talk about Quint’s reaction. This guy has been through so much (as we find out later in the film), to the point that nothing could surprise him. But look at his face at 1:57. He’s clearly at a loss for words. As an audience member, this is when we know that this is not gonna be a walk in the park, when the seasoned professional looks thunderstruck by a creature he’s had so much experience hunting over the years.
Great observation. I can’t figure out whether he’s phased by the sharks’s size. Or whether he’s excited, even turned on, by his biggest challenge yet. If he’s phased, he shakes it off pretty quick. And gets straight into war mode
The acting in a word is amazing! Additionally, the camera angles and choice of shots (editing) are impeccable. Lastly, the soundtrack by Mr. John Williams is perfect and moves the film along. "Jaws" in my book is among the greatest films ever made!
One of my favorite scenes of all time, in particular the excerpt from 2:08 to 2:24; the shot of the shark under the boat and the three of them watching in awe coupled with the music, and that little exchange between Hooper and Quint.
The bantering between these 3 is endless, timeless and legendary.Like enemies and then the best of friends that sound freaked u amazing at times when Jaws was around it's perfectly done.Brody is right they needed a bigger boat Orca to small,Hooper it's a 20 footer,Quint no 25,3 tonnes of him
When Dreyfuss stands up and races down the ladder and the music takes off to start the shark hunt.. oh man!. Shivers every time and I've seen this movie hundreds of times. They absolutely nailed it. A classic
And Hooper can't take much abuse any longer with Quint. So bossy i get that everyday at Home, Play and Work sometimes how much i can take it any longer in life thru the good and bad.And Brody says why don't we drive him to Shore instead of him taking us out to Sea
I love how Shaw calmly says, "25....three tons on him." Brody and even Hooper were blown away but Quint, with a lifetime at sea, reacted differently. Robert Shaw did an amazing job expressing expertise and knowledge as Quint.
‘ 2:29 I love how Quint and Hooper jump into action because this is what they do, and Brody is wondering if they lost their minds. You can see it on his face. 😂’
No one has ever recaptured the suspense like Spielberg. Also, he understood the secret to the film wasn’t playing his hand, and revealing the monster at every turn. He kept the shark “under wraps” till the last act. To make up for that, he really fleshed out the characters and made audiences care about their journey and fates.
The fact they didn't reveal the shark until the third act was in the script. It was not a function of the shark not working. It was a function of good writing.
@@roquefortfiles No - when the shark kept breaking down Spielberg realized he had to make the best of that problem and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise to keep the shark hidden for as long as possible was great.
@@roquefortfiles then Spielberg has been lying for the last 48 years he always says "oh I got lucky when the shark didn't work it forced me to go the classic suspense route where the monster that you don't see is scarier I wanted the audience to imagine just how big this shark is and I was able to do that because the damn thing kept breaking down it never worked when we wanted it to work" - this is what Spielberg has said hundreds of times since 1975 so he must be a liar saying this to make himself look brilliant which he was and is.
No. No entirely!! The shark not working had nothing to do with when it shows up in the movie. Its "Big reveal" in the chum scene in the third act of the film (Here) was in the script. It had nothing to do with the fact that it kept breaking down. The shark being kept "Under wraps" until the third act was a function of GOOD WRITING and a testament to how good the script was. They kept it off screen to ratchet up the tension. The fact that "Bruce" barely worked had nothing to do with where it was shown or revealed in the story. It finally shows up in the third act because Carl Gottlieb wrote it that way. And Steven only agreed to do the film if the shark was not fully revealed until the third act. @@moviesgalore9947
it was both, they both had written the harks big reveal to be in the third act, but they wanted the shark to appear more times then it actually did but it kept breaking down so Spielberg did what any master does and worked with what he got and instead focussed constructing the atmosphere to bolster the sharks presence,
Fun facts: 1) Roy Scheider’s “bigger boat” line was actually an ad lib. Like most classic cinema, it worked so well that Spielberg left it in. It also explains why Robert Shaw is looking at him kind of perplexed. 2) They nicknamed the shark “Bruce” after Spielberg’s lawyer 3) Robert Shaw actually got drunk for the Indianapolis monologue, but was so intoxicated that he couldn’t do it. He thought that being drunk for the scene might improve the performance.
I read that after a few test showings, audiences were still screaming overtop of him dropping that line - so Spielberg re-edited it to put a few more seconds of space in between after he first sees it.
I've seen this movie many times. Even though I know the plot, there are scenes such as this that are still thrilling and suspenseful. Terrific acting by these seasoned performers, and the timing of everything in this scene is perfect.
Pretty close to that big but never as one that big ever been officially recorded. The biggest great white that was verified was 19 ft 6 in. Most of the great whites that were supposed to be like 20 plus feet were actually 17 ft or so. Deep blue is somewhere between 18 and 20 ft. There are claims of great whites over 20 ft but none have been accurately measured.
Not two weeks ago, I saw a video about a great white that big; 25ft! TRUE, they didn't get a measuring tape on it, but it was almost as big as the boat they were on! 32ft! I'd attach the video, but I don't remember the name. (I've been binge watching African Lions all weekend. No idea why these Jaws clips popped up! But I've loved the movie since I saw it in the theater!)
When i was young, I viewed the premiere with my parents at a drive-in on Cape Cod. The next day, we went to a popular beach. Nobody entered the water. People were actually telling their children to not even go wading. Everyone was scared to death.

The music is absolutely spine tingling. Every little nuance of it. Every little moment of action has nuance and feeling. The build up to the main theme starting up is just spine tingling. The big reveal on the full size of the shark with the music full blast is pure cinema.

Fun fact: when Jaws was first test-screened, everyone in the audience was so startled by the shark's appearance that they were still screaming when Schneider said: "You’re gonna need a bigger boat." Speilberg didn’t want real audiences to miss the line, so he & the editors extended the scene enough for people to settle back down and start paying attention again after seeing the shark; he also raised the volume of Schneider's voice for good measure.

It's absolutely mind blowing how good this movie is. The most perfectly directed and edited film in cinema history.

@@casesoutherland4175 I consider the shark an antihero. It's not trying to do anything other than survive; humans are unlucky to be a prey source.
Edited with what they had. It was supposed to go down way differently, but due to issues they had to change things up. Show less of the shark, build tension. What came of it shows why Speilberg is one of the masters - he made gold with what he could do.

Now knowing the real life tension between Dreyfuss and Shaw you see how seamless the tension between Hooper and Quint came so naturally.
this is the most perfectly cast movie in film history. inclusive of the music, the location.. Everything about this movie is PERFECT!!!
Could not agree more!!
👍

Keep your thoughts to yourself
The amount of storytelling in five minutes here is unreal. Easily my favorite scene in movie history.
Very well spoken, and absolutely right!
Great observation. I can’t figure out whether he’s phased by the sharks’s size. Or whether he’s excited, even turned on, by his biggest challenge yet. If he’s phased, he shakes it off pretty quick. And gets straight into war mode

But every Time, i ask myself where is the caudal fin...
After all these decades I've only just now come to appreciate the name of the boat in light of the relationship between Orca and Sharks
The cinematography and acting made it good. John Williams made it a classic.
Love Quints reaction when Brody backs into the cabin, like wtf is wrong with you🤣
The bantering between these 3 is endless, timeless and legendary.Like enemies and then the best of friends that sound freaked u amazing at times when Jaws was around it's perfectly done.Brody is right they needed a bigger boat Orca to small,Hooper it's a 20 footer,Quint no 25,3 tonnes of him
When Dreyfuss stands up and races down the ladder and the music takes off to start the shark hunt.. oh man!. Shivers every time and I've seen this movie hundreds of times. They absolutely nailed it. A classic
No line seemed contrived, which is why the characters seem so authentic and relatable
everything abnout this movie is perfect, the timing the music, the direction, it's just perfect!!!!
@@moviesgalore9947
it was both, they both had written the harks big reveal to be in the third act, but they wanted the shark to appear more times then it actually did

@charleskandrut7022 3 tons of it.
Fun facts:
1) Roy Scheider’s “bigger boat” line was actually an ad lib. Like most classic cinema, it worked so well that Spielberg left it in. It also explains why Robert Shaw is looking at him kind of perplexed.
2) They nicknamed the shark “Bruce” after Spielberg’s lawyer
3) Robert Shaw actually got drunk for the Indianapolis monologue, but was so intoxicated that he couldn’t do it.
1:16 I just love the look on Brody’s face when he saw Bruce 😂😂😂😂😂😂

What adds to this movie is realism, sharks this size do exist, and can go dark side, oceans are terrifying and beautiful at the same time.
