I've been a Harley dealership tech for 25 years. I keep watching these videos waiting for Doc to say something stupid or incorrect. I'm still waiting.....
Maybe you can answer this for me regarding a tuner. I have an 2009 Road King with Vance and Hines power duals, hi-output and screaming eagle high flow air intake. Is was tuned by Harley and ran fine. Now I just installed an S&S 551 cams, pushrods, lifters, oil pump with cam support plate. I tuned it with the V&H Fuelpack with their recommended mapping but is running rich on the rear cylinder and smoked out my left pipe. What should I do? Thank you in advance.
I bought a 2020 and had a stage 4 kit put in before I got it, with the Harley tuner. The check engine light was constantly coming on. The dealership service department could not figure out what to do, they told me the Harley tuner wasn’t designed for tuning for max power and they recommended I take it to a Dyno tuner. The Dyno tuner told me it was a waste of money to try and tune with the new Harley tuner. So basically Harley took money for an upgrade and tuner that they don’t allow you to use full power. If you go to a tuner that allows you to use full power they flag my warranty. A $5000 “gotcha”from HD. Thanks for the explanation of how they work, very informative.
Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. They have to show you proof that what you put on the bike is what caused the problem before they can deny the warranty and your also allowed to have your certified motorcycle mechanic look at it to not just Harley and also doc I do love watching you videos
Doc, that was the most informative explanation of tuners I've seen. You definitely have a knack for putting it in layman terms. Many thanks for your great videos. Always learn something watching them.
@@LiTLflor self learning and it tunes itself with wide band o2 sensors. You can tune out literally anything about the bike. It literally teaches itself how you ride and what fuel/air suits you best. Powervision is a close 2nd but it's limited in some areas. ThunderMax is a better option if you are BUILDING a monster. Cams, intake and exhaust get the PV. Doing compression heads and the full works get the TM.
2010 Superglide with a stage one only. I used a Fuel Pack with the Android App. It was super easy and took literally 4 minutes. It took a typically crappy running Harley and made it run smooth, and stronger.
This should be shown to future teachers. Amazing way to explain. Captivating, motivating. This shows again: you need to know what you’re talking about to make it understandable to others.
1st time watching g a video on tuners & especially THIS channel. If I was anywhere close to where he is located, I'd make the trip. He just comes off as THE master. The one you'd want to listen to, so you get it right. Respect!
Excellent advice! After initially changing to mild slip ons and the HD torque cam with the HD tuner I wasn't happy with the results. I did a lot of internet research and thought Thundermax might be the right solution. I ended up going to a local shop and he recommended the TTS tuner and explained why. I changed my setup to a D&D 2-1 pipe, Redshift 472 cam, bigger air cleaner, S&S manifold, etc and went with the recommended TTS tuner. The end result was a bike that runs great and suits my riding style. My takeaway was exactly what was suggested in this video, if you're changing your tune, talk to the person who will be doing the work, they know what works for them.
Very well explained! Thanks a lot! My 04 Heritage had 2 mufflers installed, that werent ment for this bike, as it didn't use the interference pipe. So it was running terrible. I got stock us mufflers without the catalyst. Bike ran, as it should! Now as i sold it and got a honda fury, which the previous owner had the Powercommander V pfofessionalky installed and which has been tuned on a dyno by a professinal tuner, this bike runs soft and smooth with very little fuel consumption. I got all the documents and diagrams. As I have no clue about all this stuff, i highly recommend, not to tinker like a Teenager on a moped, but go to a professional tuner and let them do the work!
I really enjoy hearing and seeing their guys with the exotic bikes. No doubt they are getting a lot out of their machines. I believe the design team contemplated most of what a bike could be subjected to by us consumers and planned accordingly. Here in Arizona, a guy could have a long walk if he needed help. Likewise, I have never asked a gunsmith to “improve” a firearm. Sometimes it is good to have dependability as a performance goal.
Hey Doc, I much appreciate your expertise and how you explain everything. I've got a 2021 Fat Bob 114 with Stage 2. I put a SP Concepts Big Bore 4.5 2 into 1 exhaust, K&N Intake and the Zipper 468 cam upgrade. I put the Thunder Max tuner into it and you answered a couple of questions I had. I''ll keep watching your videos and thanks.
Great overview of tuners. I had read the ThunderMax tuner isn’t compatible with the RDRS system. I’d love to hear how these tuning companies will deal with the RDRS system in Harley’s.
I’ve been using my FP3 tuner for years now on my ‘16 Limited, tried auto tuning which would have worked had I had the chance to ride consistently to have all the blocks in green. Instead, I called V&H and gave them the specific details of what I’m running on my bike, ie: a VO2 Insight air cleaner, Power Duals with Destroyer oversized pipes along with the amount of lag in my throttle and the technician made me a customized map and sent it to my phone. I loaded it into my bike and now it runs like a beast! I’m extremely impressed with their continuous service they provide and not only after my original purchase, and how easy it was to get the performance out of my bike I desired! I’m happy you have included the FP3 in this video, but just wanted to comment that it’s not a buy and forget about any future help, the tech guys at Vance and Hines are there to help with any questions you have and service above and beyond many company’s products, esp if you’re like me that don’t want to mess the fuel, air ratios etc and just want to get the best out of their bike and enjoy riding! 9:07
@@jimmydiamond75 Yes, everything I asked him to include in the map he did, and it wasn’t like I had to pull teeth. Those tech guys know their stuff and are more than happy to work with you and my new “map” was done and I had it installed in my bike the same day. Now I’m not saying if you need something taken care of it will be done that quick, but I seriously doubt you’d have to wait more than a day!
Power vision with target tune. Went from 103 to FM 107 with level b heads to a s&s 124 and never had an issue or had to see a dyno. Simply get a base map and tune.
This Video should be posted on EVERY motorcycle / social media forum. It's a simple but very accurate description of what to do, what to use & what not to do or use.
I have a question. My dealership installed an aftermarket headpipe ( Tab 2-1-2 ) and Tab exhaust and of course I upgraded the air cleaner and they used the Screamin eagle pro tuner and also their tourqe cam.they are saying I don't need a dyno tune . what are your thoughts ? I don't need to squeeze out every little hp .
Wow! Finally a good overview of tuning. Your not trying to sell a product, just clear information. Now it's up to us on what level of tune fits pocketbook and riding style ..... thanks Doc.
For the DYI person, the DynoJet Powervision, ordered from Fuel Moto is the best way to go. They have many more bike, air cleaner/exhaust combo specific canned maps than the FP3. I ran the FP3 on my last two bikes & it's a great product. But not as robust as the Powervision & Fuel Moto gives an extra year of warranty & support is terrific. Just my opinion & experience.
I ran a Power Commander and FP3 on my FXDB and eventually went for the Powervision. When I bought my FXDLS the previous owner provided a TTS with it but still I cut the bs and went right for the Powervision this time like you said from FuelMoto. The unlimited map support alone is worth the money. PV is my goto recommendation for anybody regardless of how minimal they plan on going with their upgrades.
i had popping from a dealer after stage 1 aircleaner and screaming eagle mufflers touring ones not slashcut so i installed a powercommander 3 and dynaport had the map for me exact pipes downloaded it installed it and rode all day 1 pop been 6 years still runs great original sparkplugs too golden brown
You are an absolutely fantastic doctor. Very well explained. I ride 2019 slim in London England 🏴 now in know what to choose without voiding my warranty. Cheers
Thank you! Putting V&H eliminators on a 22 heritage classic, slip ons only and could not get a straight answer, even from V&H who tried to sell me their fuelpak, on if I had to map with only slip on mufflers added.
This is a FANTASTIC video and very cut and dry!!!!! I've had a ThunderMaxx on 2 of my Harley's and it never let me down. That's the only tunner I'll ever use. No matter you want to do with your bike that tunner can and will handle it....💯😎
I have a 21 Road Glide Special. My service advisor at Harley told me that the 114cu already has a high flow air cleaner therefore me upgrading to the screaming eagle heavy breather would not require a tune. The Harley dealer installed my Vance & Hines torquer 450 slip one and my screaming eagle heavy breather without a tune and actually my bike seems a little faster. What are your thoughts on this.
I’ve tried all these products and nothing come close to TTS. Steve doesn’t get enough credit, these old Harley head just like you doc are gems. I’m sure y’all speak for hrs on HD tunning. I’m blessed to live in Compton.
I've had Power Commanders on HD's for years with no problem. I've never seen any of the issues with it you have noted. My latest build I used a TTS and yep, it is a much better tuner than the Power Commander, but like I said, never had a problem with the Power Commander and I've used it on 3 bikes so far without issues.
So correct me if I am incorrect here but basically what the doc stating that harley davidson ecm will shut down after year if PCV was installed fooling ecm?
Doc, I am still under warranty so I went with the SE Pro-Tuner. I did a stage I with the SE air intake, and Rinehart slip-ons. I loaded the generic Stage I, then used to VCI on a test ride, put the results back through the laptop software, its made some changes, I put it back to the bike, and it is running fantastic now, in fact I am shocked how well it is running. Also the V&H is tempting but only good for Stage I no tunes for Stage II.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637) is a United States federal law that governs warranties on consumer products. The Act also makes it illegal for companies to void a warranty or deny coverage under the warranty solely because an aftermarket or recycled part was used. An aftermarket part is defined as a part manufactured by a company other than the original vehicle manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
So you're saying, if I swapped my exhaust from stock to v&h short shots or big radius while keeping the stock air cleaner, I don't need to tune? Not even with an FP3? I have a 2019 sportster 48.
Think of your engine as a big air pump which is restricting suction with the use of a stock A/C. Just because you add some sound doesn't mean you're pulling in more air. Exhaust only will change scavenging and may even hurt performance, probably not much if any depending on type.
I bought a super tuner for my 2008 Fatboy 12 years ago and had the local HD shop Dyno with a 211 cam. 60k miles later and it still runs great. Best money I spent .
Good video. I have had the Harley tuner and the FP3 but in my experience, the best so far has been the Power Vision with a Fuel Moto map. Buyers be warned that the FP3 is fine for stage 1 but it has a very difficult time with stage 2 or higher...
Fuel pak 3 for me love it best part if you need assistance the vendor is only. Phone call away send them the map they tweak it you use it and enjoy the results.
yes .. they are great.. and like you said.. you can download map to your phone and since its a smart phone you can send them the map and info on bike . they tweak it, send it back and you can then flash your ECM with the tweaked map.. also it can hold a few Maps in memory..
The bad part is that is not stable. The values change to previous ones in a random base, and populate large tables is a very uncomfortable thing. Both is from my personal experience with the FP3 after I do a little biggest change in my bike. Now I need to purchase a PV-1 and all is more easy and works as expected to works
Doc , I have a 2013 FXDF 103 and a orange screamin eagle super tuner pro , screamin eagle air cleaner , Vance and Hines pipes and I think my idle is much to high , not happy the local tuner wont's $ 550 to tune it . I don't think so , my Evo is much easier , Quick Silver cab , points , 2 in to one S/ Steel pipes set and forget ( in the photo ) The Fat Bob is my first modern Harley and I'm not use to it yet . I sound like I'm complaining mybe I am , I was so excited when I bought it , I took the 1985 Evo out today and it said up yours and Died , flat battery and I live out in the country and yes I know . love your channel all the best from Down under
You didn't mention the option of using PowerVision to flash a tune to the ECM. The autotune feature is fantastic. My local Harley dealer used a PowerVision along with a dyno to tune my bike and it worked great. I've used PowerVision on two Harleys so far and I'm very pleased. Once the ECM is flashed, you take the unit off and don't have to use it again unless you change something, like a cam.
Agreed. I love mine on my 16 SGS. It's great for the person like me that cant afford to have all the upgrades done at once. A little here ,tweak, a little there ,tweak...
Not here to argue...I think Doc does a great job. I had a fi2000 EFI controller on my 08 FLHRC for +5 years and never had any issues. It increased performance but I wouldn't do it again. It wasn't a mistake...I just wouldn't do it again.
Hi, great video as always. I just had a quick question since this video is a little older. I bought a 2023 Fatboy a few months ago and would like to add some slip-ons(most likely Vance & Hines) and wanted to confirm the 10% “adjustment “ and not needing a tuner for just the Slip-On upgrade. Thanks in advance.
You are correct. The video is old and motors have gotten much bigger. I wrestle with this question. With the Cat in the header a muffler change should not effect. But tuners across the nation are finding any change to the new Harley’s need a tune. Especially if you purchase outside the SE products….Doc
I removed my Cat~Converter, put on V&H Twin Slash slip-ons, stage #1 & a PC~5 and it starts great & has for 6 years now! You have some good info, but it is not always correct!
Great video. You mentioned if only replacing the muffler and not air filter a tune is not required. When you say muffler, is that considered a slip on? Does a full exhaust system without a air filter require a tuner? Thank you!
Exhaust changed everything. Lately I have been conversing with other tuners. Changing mufflers only is allowing more air to be drawn in. Ie in the past a 107 and a 114 had the same air cleaner and filter. So if a 107 changes mufflers and this allows more air to be drawn in ( as if it was a 114) then the theory of muffler only = no tune goes out the window! I am recommending at least a Stage 1 download with just muffler change….Doc
Vance Burks I have some street cannons on my 2019 CV O Rd. guide the street cannons are nice mufflers straight through nice exhaust sound but not very loud the good mufflers but if you want louder you may Want to go in a different direction
Personally they're sub-standard at best. I "HAD" them in a 18 RGS with a Screamin Eagle Stage 3 build with FuelMoto Jackpot headers. Sound wise...I thought they sucked. Performance wise...eh. I used them plus the Pro Street tuner to stay in warranty and I got 114.3ft lb torque and 105hp. I just came out of factory warranty and installed the Vance & Hines Torquer 450 muffler and Zippers Redshift 468 cam and had it tuned using PowerVision. My numbers changed big time. I'm now pulling 134.97 lbs torque and 118hp. The Street Cannons are a Ford Pinto vs the V&H which are a Ford Mustang GT.
Of course, the parts counter told me that I had to buy the tuner even though I was only doing slip ons. He told me that the 2024 Street Bob already has a (stock) high air flow intake. Thus, if I do slip ons, I must also tune. I really wonder if he was trying to just sell me a tuner. And if he was just blowing smoke?
Thank you Doc, it’s about time someone explained these tuners in a way most of us can understand. Is it true that after my bike is Dyno Tuned there is no need to touch anymore unless I get more work done to the motor. Rob in Australia
What Bolt-Ons are you running? I have True Duals front to back and a Ram A/C.. Unsure of going the Fi2000r route or if I have to go up to the more expensive ones because of the True Duals. I do not intend to do anything further to the 01 Road King motor.
Doc Harley I'm grateful that you make these videos I'm just learning I'm not really mechanical Savvy LOL I have a 2004 883 Sportster XL it has the eagle to exhaust gas box 007 air breather do I have to get a tuner for my bike it's carbureted I'm just learning thank you can a bike be ridden like this
If you bought it used it may already have a carb jet kit. If you installed the exhaust I would find a local independent shop that will order a Dyna-jet kit and install it for you…..Doc
great video doc......i just put my thunder max on my 2007 road king custom.... over the years i have added true duel rinehearts , 50 mm throttle body.... 110 converstion kit, and screaming eagle heavy breather.....they did not have my exact map so i called thudermax and they recommended map 810.... the only thing i had trouble with was when it asked me if i had automatic compression releases (ARS)... i said no...... ... i hope i did it right but i was thinking about bringing it to you all to double check.... i seems to idle a little higher then before ... but as you said the more you ride it better it will get... thanks again for the great video
At the 2:15 mark he does start to address the issue of adding exhaust and an air cleaner. He then talks about needing a turner. However, I believe there is a less expensive option that he omits and that is the dealer downloading a possible map directly to the ECM. This is usually less costly than buying a tuner if H-D has created a map for the particular exhaust and air cleaner that you are using. Not sure why Doc didn't elaborate on this option.
I know you're talking about newer bikes, but I have a big shot by Arlen Ness on a 2000 road glide Doc, and have had it on there for 8 9 years no issues whatsoever. And if I'm not mistaken I'm limited on choices with a 21-year-old bike. Or at least I was at the time of purchase but I'm very happy with it
Great video. I got a cracked ecm on my Buell. Need to swap old tune on to new ecm. Leaning towards the bluetooth one for my Buell and android phone. Vs the "wire"or sending for a custom ecm. Plus can get real world riding data on the bluetooth.
My California dealer fully honored my extended warranty with the V&H FuelPak, after a major electronics failure in my 2016 FXDB. I asked if the tuner will change the warranty, they said, emphatically, no. Nice thing about the Y&H, is you can switch back to the factory ECM tune, at will.
Doc, I put a set of Tailgunner slip ons on my 2021 Fat Bob. They sound great. I understand that the bike doesn't need a tune. However, because they are unbaffled, does not getting the bike tuned have any effect on my warranty? Thank you for your time!
Happy the rules state If a part causes damage, the warranty will not cover. So if your unbaffled aftermarket mufflers went beyond the factory air fuel perimeters, then yes. I would pay a dyno operator to check with wideband sensors. Show you the results and discuss the options….Doc
Wish i was back in Charleston, Low Country is the Best Shop i've been to and after i left i managed a few up here and i think i did well, but now that i'm retired, not happy with the Dealer group dealers
Also you need to call and ask your performance parts company and ask them what tuner works best with their product. Example: Rhinehart recommends Power Vision... and man does it work!!!! Bottom Line have it Dyno Tuned
I got a harley tuner with slip on pipes on my 2021 RGS harley mapped it as a stage1.. this week i plan on installing some head pipes do I need it tuned again?
I went with the ThunderMax....the cost of the TTS system plus to get the local dyno expert to tune my bike was very close to the cost of the ThunderMax. I did my research and installed it myself. No dyno required, and it is always searching for the correct fuel/air mixture for whatever conditions or altitude I'm at. From riding Beartooth Highway (14,000 ft) or on the coast it is in tune as opposed to the TTS where it "was in tune" the day you had it installed.
Hey Doc, I purchased a Fuel Pak 3 tuner from Vance and Hines. I went through a few combinations and right now I am back to the stock Harley tune, 2007 Electra Glide. Funny thing is the odometer reading went from the actual miles of approximately 53,000 miles to a random 25,000 odometer reading. have you ever heard of this happening?
I have a 2011 tri glide with a stage one kit it was on it when I bought it I would like to have a little more torque I'm thinking of the se255 cam do I need a tuner
Fool me once Shame on you Fool me twice Shame on me Fool me three times Its time to Change brands. I'm starting to rethink getting an aftermarket exhaust. If the exhaust didn't look so hideous on my Fat Bob I wouldn't worry about changing it out. I like the Vance & Hines Slash cut short shots. They look & sound Awesome!
Warranty makes zero difference. Unless they proof your changes caused the issue they have to cover it. FTC slapped Harleys hand for deceptive warranty as they should. Failure analysis has distinctive failure Moses that are identifiable. This warranty is only as good as your dealership. This is why I only buy bikes from Family owned dealerships and avoid corporate owned Harley dealers. Bottom line since the FTC slapped Harleys hands with their warranty policies applications the game has changed.
V&H FP3 can Reflash to the OEM tune. Had one on a Street 750. Used the V&H Map. S/O Muffler and Stage 1 Intake. Dyno'd at 70 HP and 58 Trq at the wheel. My 1200 Custom, Slip On mufflers and Stage 1 Intake. Dyno'd at 78HP and 78 Trq at wheel. Using a FP3 Map
I get a kick out of these m8’s. guys spending huge money on kits but if it’s got a Harley tuner top speed is only 110 mph 😆 Mine is twin cam is limited at 160 mph with power vision
Jeff Helm My TC was limited at 115 from factory. the power vision raised it to 160 mph. Not sure if the limit came from dyno jet or fuel Moto who I bought the powervision from. Are you saying a fp3 takes the limit of the m8 ? Because I heard you can’t override the m8 ECM. Don’t know if that’s true.
Great video, question do you have to return after you install an external breather? I have stage 1 kit screamin eagle tuner with Rinehart slip-ons. Thanks
For us it would be great if you returned for 3 pulls with a wideband monitoring to confirm a change. Mine ran better. So I recommend this mod before tuning….Doc
well i got the fuel pak 3 from Vance and Hines, no prob installing it, did have to call them a couple times to get all the parameters added. but it works very well no more bucking at low speed or when i let up on the gas.
Got a FP3 on my 2012 fxdc v&h big radius 2/2 SE heavy breather…Runs like a freaking champ! Now it will never be like taking it to a true Dyno there’s just no substitute for that. But the tuners will get you about 80% of the way there… The screaming Eagle seems to only one to fly to EPA standards unless maybe it’s the pro. The other issue is this, the guy who Dyno’s your bike gives you a lifetime warranty, which is great if you decide to change your pipes out a year or two from now he just take it right back to him and re-dyno it. The problem is that the warranty is of him, if anything were to happen to him so he passed away in six months well there goes your Dyno warranty. Now you have to find another Dyno place and spend another 5-$600. (independent dyno place, individual)
Well. I for one understand them. If you use a tuner that will change the signals from the HD system you don´t know what will happend to the bike in the long run. So HD don´t want ppl coming in saying something is wrong with their "stock" Harley... It´s just comon sence for a Company. Protect your Product.
This was a required action forced on Harley when the Obama administration's EPA sued them. They got backed into a corner and had to agree to this practice as part of the settlement. I think John Maxwell explained it pretty good on one of his videos.
Just ordered sp concepts 2-1 lane splitters today for my 17 street bob Fxdb Stock air cleaner and everything else stock. I have the old screaming eagle pro street tuner that hooks into laptop. Should I attempt to tune it regardless? Or will the new pipes be ok. Thanks for your time. Great video.

Thank you for your time and support. Your build looks like a lot of fun to ride….Doc
So they’re actual mechanics is what you’re saying. Not this sell out
@@jimmydiamond75 Yes, everything I asked him to include in the map he did, and it wasn’t like I had to pull teeth.
In my humble opinion, they can believe your tune is close but in fact a custom dyno tune can deliver a better ride…Doc
This is by FAR the best HD ECM/ECU tuner vid on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing your knowledge sir!💯🏍🔥🦾
Wow, thanks!....Doc
Wow! Finally a good overview of tuning. Your not trying to sell a product, just clear information. Now it's up to us on what level of tune fits pocketbook and riding style ..... thanks Doc.
As everyone on here says, the BEST comparison of all these tuners anywhere. Thank you.
Agreed! PV on my FXLRS and honestly a litt;e annoyed they didn't mention it on this video especially considering it's neck and neck with the FP3
i had popping from a dealer after stage 1 aircleaner and screaming eagle mufflers touring ones not slashcut so i installed a powercommander 3 and dynaport had the map for me exact pipes downloaded it installed it and rode all day 1 pop been 6 years still runs great original sparkplugs too golden brown
By far the best tuner I use us the power vision 💪
My Roadglide just hit 10 years. I’m going Thundermax!!
This could be a good move for you. read the instructions and remember to accept the modifications the ThunderMax makes....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson okay! Thanks Doc!
Great information delivered in a no nonsense easy to understand format. Wish I had a local dealership that believed in this approach.
That's what I am up against
I’ve tried all these products and nothing come close to TTS. Steve doesn’t get enough credit, these old Harley head just like you doc are gems. I’m sure y’all speak for hrs on HD tunning. I’m blessed to live in Compton.
I agree with your choice. No warrenty..No problem.....best results...Doc
Great advice , Doc , thanks . I don’t think I’m going to mess with mine for now . I don’t feel ready to open a can of worms .
Excellent video presented by an amiable knowledgeable, gifted teacher and communicator.
Wow, thank you!…..Doc
I've had Power Commanders on HD's for years with no problem. I've never seen any of the issues with it you have noted. My latest build I used a TTS and yep, it is a much better tuner than the Power Commander, but like I said, never had a problem with the Power Commander and I've used it on 3 bikes so far without issues.
He is selling the Harley product. In other words he is full of the ---------.
@@semperfipar1299 what part of this video was he selling the Harley products? The only part I saw was if your still under warranty !!
Good news on your successful tuning…Doc
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637) is a United States federal law that governs warranties on consumer products. The Act also makes it illegal for companies to void a warranty or deny coverage under the warranty solely because an aftermarket or recycled part was used. An aftermarket part is defined as a part manufactured by a company other than the original vehicle manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
Quoted several times but irrelevant in real life…..Doc
Thanks Doc , You are a really big help for us green horns. Thank you!
I have a 2011 Ultra Classic with no changes and it runs perfectly. What can I say?
If it's not broken, doesn't need fixing.
This is the best and simplest explanation of EFI and aftermarket tuners i have seen. Thanx, Triumph and Guzzi owner (Ex Harley owner..)
So you're saying, if I swapped my exhaust from stock to v&h short shots or big radius while keeping the stock air cleaner, I don't need to tune? Not even with an FP3? I have a 2019 sportster 48.
aDRIAN pAMINTUAN Yes.
As long as your ok with the decel pop you will get then ya dont need one.
Thanks for sharing....Doc
Thanks Doc. Great information as always. Stock works just fine for me. Plus a little extra chrome here and there.
Thanks for this, Doc! Just ordered a Thundermax for my 22 Road Glide ST
Good video. I have had the Harley tuner and the FP3 but in my experience, the best so far has been the Power Vision with a Fuel Moto map. Buyers be warned that the FP3 is fine for stage 1 but it has a very difficult time with stage 2 or higher...
Just put new header pipes with stock exhaust. Great information on stock 103..
I’m glad you found the information useful…Doc
Powervision is the best out there. Can only be beat by a tuner and his dyno.
yeah i was kinda surprised he didnt talk about PV.. arguably in the top 2 tuners on the market
Yup.. im a power vision guy..
Thundermax is the best by far.
Power Vision beat out my experienced dealership dyno guy using a Harley Race Tuner. Thanks Fuel Moto.
Very informative and interesting video! Thank you Doc!
I'm glad you found it helpful. ….Doc
FP3 is a good product, but V&H tech support is terrible.
sounds good for d.i.y noob like me
Doc , I have a 2013 FXDF 103 and a orange screamin eagle super tuner pro , screamin eagle air cleaner , Vance and Hines pipes and I think my idle is much to high , not happy the local tuner wont's $ 550 to tune it . I don't think so , my Evo is much easier , Quick Silver cab , points , 2 in to one S/ Steel pipes set and forget ( in the photo ) The Fat Bob is my first modern Harley and I'm not use to it yet . I sound like I'm complaining mybe I am , I was so excited when I bought it , I took the 1985 Evo out today and it said up yours and Died , flat battery and I live out in the country and yes I know . love your channel all the best from Down under
Doc , Thanks for breaking it down for me and the rest of us weekend warriors! Lol
Thank you so much for this great video. Just bought a 2020 Low Rider S and put Vance & Hines mufflers on it. So glad to hear I don't need a tune!
On my 04 ultra I use the vision love it
This is the year and bike I have, it works good you say?
You didn't mention the option of using PowerVision to flash a tune to the ECM. The autotune feature is fantastic. My local Harley dealer used a PowerVision along with a dyno to tune my bike and it worked great. I've used PowerVision on two Harleys so far and I'm very pleased. Once the ECM is flashed, you take the unit off and don't have to use it again unless you change something, like a cam.
Which power vision? Do they still sell the powervision?
Another great video Doc! I feel that the Fuelpak is the way to go for 90% of DIY riders.
Agreed.
I love mine on my 16 SGS.
It's great for the person like me that cant afford to have all the upgrades done at once. A little here ,tweak, a little there ,tweak...
Dynojet power vision much more features....
BrewCityRider FuelPack sucks. Seen it burn up too many cylinders
@@@richardedwin5980 any one of them will do that when ya dont know how to use them properly.
gaknskk this is true but I've seen more problems on bikes using the FuelPack than I have using say TTS, PowerVision etc
Not here to argue...I think Doc does a great job. I had a fi2000 EFI controller on my 08 FLHRC for +5 years and never had any issues. It increased performance but I wouldn't do it again. It wasn't a mistake...I just wouldn't do it again.
Thanks for sharing your experience...Doc
Hey Doc thanks for the information it was great learned a little bit more about the tuners
Doc, I'd love to see some info on what a 'license tune' (Dynojet) is and what wide band O2 sensors can do and narrow band sensors *can't* do.
Thanks for the Video suggestion 👍…..Doc
This is why I like CV Carbs, less headaches!
Less power too
I agree, Doc is informative and well spoken. Easy to understand. There is also this-.. "Magnusson-Moss Act". Then there is the EPA.
Doc, thanks for the good teaching.
Ok, thanks for the quick reply.
I removed my Cat~Converter, put on V&H Twin Slash slip-ons, stage #1 & a PC~5 and it starts great & has for 6 years now! You have some good info, but it is not always correct!
How much do you ride? That’s probably why you haven’t had a issue 7 years and only ride it 15 times ? Just saying

Thanks for the quick reply!
Great video! I like to hear more about the 4.5 screamingeagle street canons please!
If you want more information. Check out Steve’s explanation at GMR Performance videos. He tunes daily on a dyno. He has facts….Doc
Thank you Doc, it’s about time someone explained these tuners in a way most of us can understand. Is it true that after my bike is Dyno Tuned there is no need to touch anymore unless I get more work done to the motor. Rob in Australia
I've got a 03 Harley don't have an O2 sensor on I have a Cobra FI tuner and it works just fine I've had it on there since 2003
What Bolt-Ons are you running? I have True Duals front to back and a Ram A/C.. Unsure of going the Fi2000r route or if I have to go up to the more expensive ones because of the True Duals. I do not intend to do anything further to the 01 Road King motor.

great video doc......i just put my thunder max on my 2007 road king custom.... over the years i have added true duel rinehearts , 50 mm throttle body....
Just adding slips ons and air. Should I just have the dealer re map?
That was clearly covered in in the video.
Emil George people just don't pay attention
Or at least I was at the time of purchase but I'm very happy with it
Glad the bike is running well. Thanks ~ Doc
Excellent explanation, thank you!
Great video. I got a cracked ecm on my Buell. Need to swap old tune on to new ecm. Leaning towards the bluetooth one for my Buell and android phone. Vs the "wire"or sending for a custom ecm. Plus can get real world riding data on the bluetooth.
The biggest issue I have with Bluetooth is the loss of connection. Just when you think you got some great data on the road….you didn’t……Doc
Always informative and much appreciated. Thanks again doc.
I remember the days when you could spend 500 bucks on a set of pipes an air cleaner and some jets, i miss carburetors
Just leave it stock & enjoy the ride !

YES...Changing exhaust has the largest influence on a Harley motor, especially the header....Doc
Yes but never a smaller number….Doc

LMAO, 160mph on a Harley. That'll be the day!
Fred I didn’t say it will go 160 I said it’s limited at 160 mph. But it will go much faster than 112 mph that the m8’s are limited at.
dude, w/ the FP3 you can turn off that limiter. I walk on stock M8's all the time....the look on their face is priceless!
Jeff Helm
My TC was limited at 115 from factory. the power vision raised it to 160 mph.
Thanks

"Black Flagging" customers motorcycles, one more way that Harley is destroying it's customer base.
Well. I for one understand them. If you use a tuner that will change the signals from the HD system you don´t know what will happend to the bike in the long run. So HD don´t want ppl coming in saying something is wrong with their "stock" Harley... It´s just comon sence for a Company. Protect your Product.
None HD tuner that is..
This was a required action forced on Harley when the Obama administration's EPA sued them. They got backed into a corner and had to agree to this practice as part of the settlement. I think John Maxwell explained it pretty good on one of his videos.
