Learn to do it all yourself because even after paying the dealer inflated fees you cannot trust that it was all done correctly or even at all.
Outstanding video..no fluff..no bullshit..just pertinent information..well done..thanks
Thank you... glad it helped
Thank you for the video, it is really helpful. You have a talent at explaining things in an easy way and I really like that you also give some background as to why and how some things work or need to be done!

Another excellent and highly informative tutorial, thank you. I assume the down thumbs are all from Harley dealers who want to sell us genuine H-D primary chain slack measuring tools at 75 quid a pop...
That coat hanger trick is a game changer
Who would thumbs down this video? It’s great. Keep it up!
Great bent coathanger tip Del, nice one. Don't know about the Dyna but on the Sportster you check the clutch cable free play by pulling the cable out of the lever rather than moving the clutch lever itself, which is the way I always used to do it too ;)
Great video but I have an 07 Dyna & 07 Softail, neither have a primary inspection plate. Do I have to open the case?
Automatic self adjuster mate, upgraded since the 1450..! nothing to adjust for you.
@@Moonfleet41 Thank you!
If I'm having problems getting into neutral, do I need to adjust Clutch again? I put a brand new Barnett Clutch in my Harley-Davidson in last few months, maybe 600 miles since new Clutch
Great video Delboy, and happy that you mentioned my home state of Western Australia.
Glad you enjoyed it mate, and what a beautiful place you live!
Have a 2008 sportster 1200 runs great all of sudden it only goes 20 mph I can still switch gears but it dont make a difference. Any info would be much appreciated thank you.
Whats up everyone , I have a question so i adjusted my clutch and now the bikes feels like its getting held back just feels super slow and i hear a slight rattle. Anyone know what could be the reason bike was riding perfect before adjustment i just wanted to check it since i was already there for a fluid change.
I tried adjusting my clutch on my 99 road king , when I go to adjust clutch cable , it’s not wanting to tighten up, Help! Please
So, you had the chain at 7/8" wanted 5/8", so you went up on the teeth one click? So up takes slack OUT of the primary?? Thanks
What an awesome video that was! I’m not a Harley owner, but the manner in which this was presented, was super enjoyable to watch. Cheers mate!
I just installed a compensator delete and removed and put back on my clutch to do so. I try and start the bike up she runs but the clutch just completely engages the lever is has all play. I did change the primary fluid as well. I loosened the clutch cable under the boot halfway and check the clutch but the threaded bolt you said that should freely turn does not I rotate it left and right and it’s hitting plates I believe
Excellent video. I like the wire hanger tool that you made.
Great video!!! When I try to torque my hub lock but the entire clutch basket spins. I tried putting in 1st gear and still spins and turns engine
I can't get my jam nut broke. Put it in first, just rolled the bike. Put the brake on and I feel like I'm fixing to break something. What to do?
Did u ever figure it out cuz I’m having same problem
@garrettharrison4365 no I did not but 4 years later and no problems yet
after adjusting my clutch cable, soon i ride my bike few miles my clutch lever starts to get all wobbly lots of slack and cant change gear what can it be.
What happens if u went the wrong way on the clutch adjustment screw!! Can it be fixed
I kept wanting to turn my head and cough everytime you pushed on that chain
Yea I am one of those that says "What the HECK is lightly seated" great job explaining.
Hey Delboy, I have a 1997 Heritage Soft Tail. Clutch is acting oddly. When I let the clutch out it begins engaging too early. It begins to engage at less than one half inch release. The bike is creeping and down shifting feels very sticky. Recently changed all fluids and adjusted clutch per the usual specs. Can't seem to figure this out. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might look first. Experienced mechanic, not afraid to dig in. Thank you in advance for any help. Aaron In The U.S.A. East Coast :) P.S. Bike has 49,000 on it, very well maintained.
Hi Aaron, check the freeplay at your lever, you need a minimum of 3mm gap between the clevice joint and the lever itself where the cable crosses, if you've any more than that, then you could be failing to pull the clutch open enough leading to the drag you're experiencing... it could be that your cable has stretched if it's the original one, alternatively you could leave a little less freeplay on the clutch pack adjustment... if you're any more than 1/2 turn then tha's also leaving a little too much slack... finally, if your plates are contaminated with burnt oil, or moisture content from condensation, it could be getting a bit stuck together... so if both adjustments don't help, then drop the plates out, measure them for tolerance (in your manual), and makes sure they're flat and not warped... hope that helps!
Grub screw on mine comes fully out, what do you think is a reason?
I had some people telling me to tighten the screw in until plate raises slightly the release it back just till the plate settles again. That aint how the shop manual says to do it. Your was is more correct in my opinion
Great explanation Del! I now feel brave enough to do it myself! 😂
This guys a legend so easy after you do it once 🤙🤙😜
Lots of "tutorials" on UA-cam, but yours provide thoroughly detailed explanations, whereas the others are vague, or worse, involve lame attempts at standup comedy. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.
You're very welcome, and thank you for the kind feedback.
TO ADJUST THE CLUTCH OF THE 103 ROAD KING IS THE SAME AS 114? THANK YOU
29 thumbs down...who's the idiots,...these are great tutorials..thanks for sharing Del.
There will always be Thumbdowners brother...and Harley's will always have haters..!
Hey Delroy.. thank you for the informative video, appreciate it.
Hey bro, got a question for you . I just had Harley-Davidson install a brand new clutch hub assembly, unfortunately looks like they reused the pressure plate, the grub screw and the adjuster screw from the old clutch assembly ,also the inside of the ring gear is a blue color by the rivets. it looks burnt ? (Looks exactly like my old one that had 30,000 miles on)is that normal from the factory or should that be shiny please help, just paid $485 for a new clutch assembly,I hope I didn't get taken thank you in advance.
The Harley main dealer will have given you an itemized bill im sure, every part replaced will have been listed and priced on there, and also any labour charges... if they charged you for a pressure plate, then it should be in there, if you suspect it's not, then maybe ask them and explain your concerns..! and if you have a suspicion that they are not being honest, then maybe ask to see the old parts they took out.!!
I guess not removing the entire cover completely so don't have to replace gasket?

Yet another real useful 'how to' for the H.D'ers Del. The bike is looking sweet as, Hope you enjoying clocking up the miles. Awrabesht to you both from me & all the clan bro. Chat soon. 😉💙🤘
Hi Al, yes indeed mate, 200miles over the weekend, just shakin' it all down, no squeaks, no leaks and singing like a jay bird... mission accomplished! Have a great week mate, love n' hugs to the clan, D&Px
Thanks, I happened to own a Dayna super Glyde custom
Allen keys are different. What if I use a short one? It will have less weight to fall on.
Subscribed and impressed. I'm working on my dyna in the states. I really like that set of tools you had with the interchangable bits and the Tee handle. -nick the bloke from across the pond
Hi Nick, great to hear from you Sir, glad you enjoy the content, have a great day and ride safe!
whats the brand of the T-handle torque wrench do you use? Thanks. First Harley Dyna yesterday. Thanks for the awesome videos......
Congratulations on the new Dyna, have fun with it... This is the torque wrench :- www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/Wiha-Torque-T-Handle-ST-Plus-TorqueVario-Set-29234?search=Torque%20vario%20st&description=true
👍🏻Clearly explained, Will done.
Thanks a lot
Hi my man , do you have an answer for me ? Trying to fit heinz nano 3 in 1rears on my 2014 softail slim . My OEM wires are Violet , Black , white and green .. what is what ? Can’t find anything 😅😅
All those aftermarket units come with random different wiring, and just to make it more fun.. they give you no wiring diagram either.. i get this all the time with things like tail lights and indicators.. even Bates style headlights.... So what i do is touch each of the wires against a spare bike battery and see what lights up.. then label them with some masking tape and a pen.. if it helps you make a start, the black wires are usually earth (ground), so touch that on the battery earth terminal, then the colour wires in turn on the live terminal, and note down which wire lights what..! Hope that helps.. Good luck. Del.
I was just looking a videos on repairing my bike and upkeep and your video was phenomenal on explaining and your "chain measure" was outstanding. Thank you.
.
On question I have. Where did you get thst torque with the red handle. If you can steer me in the right direction.
.
At An thanks and ride safe.
Thank you for your kind words Frank, here is a link to the "Torque Vario" Torque Wrench :- www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/Wiha-Torque-T-Handle-ST-Plus-TorqueVario-Set-29234?search=Torque%20vario%20st&description=true
I installed an elitemototech clutch lever on my fxdls, now with it adjusted every time I put it in 1st gear it lunges and stalls...isn't engaging right for some reason
Does the lever disengage the clutch fully? Is it too close to the bar to start with and not pulling in far enough? This is a potential problem with aftermarket levers, specially those where the owner wants them closer tot he bar for easier reach... if you try putting your factory lever back on for a moment, then test it to see if it engages safely and normally, if it does, then the lever design is the problem.
Well explained video bruv. And I must say she looks good. A defo BIG change from before. Every time I look at it I see something I didn't notice before. Ride safe and enjoy the sunshine
Thanks Ray, im really proud of the bike, it was awesome last weekend just getting out for 200 miles and shaking it all down, no issues, no leaks, and it was riding better and better as the hours went by.. Feels good to have a bike i customised myself, and something that stands out from the catalogue bikes..!
I bought a used Dyna that needs the fluids changed & these adjustments. I'm much more confident to be able to service it right. Thanks!
Great to hear mate, congratulations on your first repair project, am sure you'll agree, it's great to take care of your bike personally, gives you a greater pride of ownership!
Does that not leave more of a belly in the bottom end of that chain?
New subscriber, enjoying your vids ! Learning lots of tricks
Thank you, welcome aboard, we're glad to hear you enjoy the videos!
very good video, well explained ... there is still something to learn. keep it up
That did not work for my clutch adjustment. As soon as I felt resistance I backed it off and locked it down. When I tried to tighten the clutch lever with the cable adjuster it never gave me any lever all the way out. I had to turn the allen key in a lot before I got any lever at all. Is my clutch just too worn?
Not necessarily, but the plates could be contaminated, so it could be a good opportunity to drop the plates out and give them a good clean and then re-install them all with fresh oil and see how it feels, good luck with it mate.
Thanks for this one! I need to get this done on mine too.
Appreciate ur information I’m gonna adjust my clutch again thanks stay blessed my brother
Glad to be of help, hope it goes for you brother...
I want to thank you very much for your help I appreciateYour information but very helpful
I am having a hard time finding a T handle torque tool can you help... I'm in Colorado. ....
Not for ship to America, I have links for Europe, but if you look them up 'Wiha Torque Vario', there may be a supplier in the lower 48 that can help...
Another great video. Thanks for your time.
Thanks so much for your videos ! great and respect for share it. Could you please describe the full tool, torque on the 6"38 minutes (with the 11/16 drive socket who incluse a 7/32 allen inside for fix the clutch nut) ? incredible home made tool ? (is not the WIHA TORQUE)
Hi Regis. There is no allen inside there, it's just a socket on the end of the Wiha Torque Wrench !
@@Moonfleet41 Oh Ok :😅😂 thanks so much for reply 🙏 and films you're a great artist ! Respect 🙏
Great video sir! Quick question, can I adjust the cable only or do I have to adjust the Hub also?
On your service interval adjusting the clutch pack is to re-set the freeplay in the plates so they have enough room to expand when the clutch gets hot... this is nothing to do with the cable adjustment, you can set all the slack you want in your cable, but if the hub adjustment is not correct, it can still heat up and start to slip under pressure so you must do 'both' each time that service interval comes... hope that helps.
it was good, wish the measurements in foot pounds or both
If the clutch is set too loose, will that set the friction zone of the clutch lever closer to the grip? Mine is that way right now and I want to be able to shift with just 2 fingers.
No it shouldn't affect it, if it's too loose though, it will slip in cold weather, or whent he bike is stone cold, which could lead to premature wear.
you know if the last owner saw the transformation of the bike ?
Don't think so buddy.. he's not a UA-cam guy..!
Question???
I have 2008 Harley Davidson Softail. My manual says 1 quart when changing primary, but if I go on the videos it’s full at 22 ozs. When looking in wil hen refilling I stopped the level right when fluid starts touching the plate ..???? Any info would be appreciated
Thanks
Hi Jackson, to go with the level at the plates is correct... the quantity of 1 quart is only a reliable amount to put in, provided the insides of the case are bone dry as any residue inside the case that hasn't drained out, will lead to a slight overfill... and a lot of oil clings to the internals... even if you let it drain overnight, it will still be wet inside, so always go with the level unless you're re-building it from dry.
Delboy's Garage
Thanks I was pretty sure by watching your video I was correct, but doesn’t hurt to ask and make sure. Thanks fir the awesome videos they really help me and are very knowledgeable!
Again.... "What do you do if you don't have the proper tool," is what I love most about your channel, my friend. Improvise, adapt and overcome. I'm glad that even though you're getting a lot of the proper tools, you're still teaching us how to figure it out if we don't. Thanks again, sir.
Said that right brother, need a tool, make a tool!... maybe in the hope that it will motivate more people to get involved in maintenance when they haven't got the money to buy special tools, as that is often the biggest bar from getting involved! Have a great week buddy, ride safe...
It's almost time to service my bike before taking it out for a great season of ride and your videos has been very helpful and informative and given me the confidence to service my own bike! Thank you.
Great video, took the fear out of doing it myself.
Good info here, Thank You!
I really appreciate your Harley videos . The info you provide is like money in my pocket... Along with my Service Manual, your videos provide me the confidence to learn more about wrenching on my bikes.
One thing Mate, sometimes you get to talking fast, and I have a difficult time understanding you accent. I am from the States, and speak Texan. Thanks again and, keep up the Good Work!
Hi any idea for harley-davidson v-rod gear box oil
Fantastic video. Great info.
I hope you are now rewarded with a glorious summer to enjoy that beast.
Thank you my friend, i hope so too.!
Thanks brother 🤟 Gonna do it now
Is the clutch adjustment screw just a Harley thing? I didn't have anything like this on any of my bikes (250r, CBR500r, VFR800).
Not to be funny, but what is a grub screw?
I have a 1997 wide glide. Adjusted clutch and new fluid. The problem I'm having is with the motorcycle in 1st gear and at idle in a stop, i can shift into neutral or any other gear. I can only shift into neutral and all the gears with the motorcycle engine off. The motorcycle runs fine when rolling down the road. What could be the problem?
Possibly too much primary oil, or perhaps the oil is too thick ? did you use gear oil?...do you have it adjusted correctly with sufficient free play in the clutch pack and the cable? if none of those things, then looking deeper you may have wear notches in the clutch basket that could be hanging the plates up and preventing free movement!
@Moonfleet41 tell me more about the notches in the clutch basket? I'm not afraid to open up the primary and investigate
Absolute quality as always. Invaluable info and always interesting to watch and see how it's done. Thank you. Please keep them coming !
Cheers Jez, thanks for the support mate!
Спасибо за видео! В России и соседних странах американские мотоциклы становятся всё популярнее! Приезжайте к нам на рождество!
Very helpful video. Thanks man!
Most welcome mate, Glad it helped!
My clutch feels worse than before not sure. Now I can’t ride my bike at all… I have a 2000 fxds
All I can say mate is clearly you've done something wrong, perhaps go through the video again WITHOUT SKIPPING, and take care to perform EVERY step exactly as I did and your clutch should be fine. It's easy to miss something so it's always worth a second look... good luck with it.
@@Moonfleet41 ok will do.
Great vid Del. Everything explained really well
If I put a new clutch in and I adjusted it, but it still seems too tight that I put the clutch in wrong
I don't understand what you mean by "Too tight" !
You have a talent at explaining things in an easy way, I like the way you let the Allen wrench fall to set it than tighten.Thank you
He is the Best,on youtube, any indy or dealership.
Great video, thanks
What's the torque tool you use called? I'm trying to find one.
Hi Dave.. it's one of there mate..
www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/index.php?route=product/search&search=Torque%20Vario%20ST&description=true
How do you adjust one a 2006 fat boy screaming eagle cvo. I dont have that adjustment screw on mine. Totally different
No need to worry yourself with clutch adjustment on your CVO Joseph, being hydraulic they are self adjusting, just maintain the fluid in the bar reservoir !
@@Moonfleet41 ok. Thank you so much. I was wondering why mines looked different.
Nice Job Mate...easy pisey
Best video I have watched on the subject. Thank you. I’ll subscribe.
great Vlog thanks going to help a lot
Great video, just need 🎤 for more audio volume.
great vid Del, Im loving the Dyna...great bike
Thanks Dave.. i loved making these three videos, Harley's a such a joy to service..!
Hi Del,
Nice in depth video of the Harley clutch adjustment.
Does the triumph bonneville needs clutch adjustment besides the free play on the lever on the handlebars?
Is there adjustment to be done on the clutch itself like on the dyna?
Reason why i ask is because is found sometimes when i ride along and change gear. The gear doesn't always clicks in directly by the throw of the gear shifter. But i feel it clicking in by the last mm movement of the clutch lever when letting go the clutch after shifting??
And i was thinking this behavior maybe could be clutch related??
Grtz
Dieter
Great content , thankyou
Dynamite Brother
Thanks bro for the feeling of this adjustment, we’ll explained
Well done...explanation was well presented for the layman. I'ma 40 yr Ford tech....this was plain and simple...Thanks!
What size is the Alan key.
Thank you for taking the time to make this and explaining it so well
Do you awake this adjustment when engine hot? Like after a ride?
COLD... always cold, this clearance adjustment is to give you a heat expansion space.. so if the motor was hot, the space would expand when it cools down..
GREAT EXPLANATION
Check out the HD clutch adjustment tool from Matco, it’s awesome, I do a lot of clutches so it’s handy.
Very good videos, obviously very experienced and knowledgeable, thanks so much, my shop manual mentions cleaning the lifter filter screen when doing an oil change / service, what is your opinion on this ? I've never looked at mine !
What size wrench do you need to brake that lock nut loose? How many degrees is the offset in your wrench?
Love your videos very informative and precise built my 1999 Harley Davidson from scratch an now can tackle on the maintenance part as well.... THANK YOU!
Does this have to be done before installing a new clutch cable?!
It's not relevant mate, the two adjustments are not related.
very good video
Love your videos, question on the table when adjusting clutch does it matter if your in gear or neutral
