    I used to have an old VW camper bus, it leaked oil like a sieve. I replaced the engine and tweaked it with aftermarket header and exhaust system. It would lift the front end off the ground on take off after all the mods were done. I had to sell it because my wife was afraid to drive it, I on the other hand loved it. To this day that was one of the worst decisions I believe I ever made. I always loved the original VW smell.... Good memories

      And for some reason my car has that oil smell, well at least I know it still has oil in it!

      I spent a lot of time on UA-cam learning how to do many steps, my goal was to embed clips of key things learned / tops and tricks that also tried to make the video interesting. Although it is a somewhat simple car, it does require you to learn lots of auto skills AND patience!!! If I never see a soldering iron again...

      John, thanks a bunch for nice note, turns out this was only the beginning, "Timothy is working on the bug" has become a typical response from my wife when someone is asking where am I! But everyone loves the bug and it's a blast to drive, well worth the effort. You got a bug or getting one?

    Looks amazing 👏 😍. As a child my mother had a 1976 super beetle, hers was also yellow and when she had it restored painted it blue also. I loved that car and it started my wanting of VW beetles. They're great cars and I think everyone should at least have the opportunity to drive one sometime in their life

      I was never a beetle owner or driver until inheriting the 72 Super.
      Like you it has grown on me, am pretty protective of it.
      Now living in an apartment and its a pretty frequent that a resident has bug stories to share with me, there's lot's of goodness around these bugs and feeling more like the right thing to have saved it.

    Really no rust?
    Nothing to weld?
    The last beetle at this condition I did see 25 years ago. Unbelievable find.
    Congrats from Germany
    It's a 1302, super beetle they call the 1303
    1302 is the best version they ever did produce.
    Personally I would swap to 1600ccm and the latest rack and pinion steering you will find at a 1303

      I have to thank my brother and son who were previous owners and did excellent car care. It fell to me to honor their efforts, I never could have pulled off the metal work. Then things really changed... I fell in love with the bug, as do a lot of people that see it, and we have plans to take it with us wherever we go, staying in the family for the foreseeable future and on me to keep it rust free, challenge accepted.

    O M G. do you have detail videos? I just resurrected my 72 super from 10 years of storage. (parents bought it a month before they got married in '72. sold it to me for 2 dollars.) and thinking it may be a good project for the middle schooler and i to spiff some things up on it. ✌

    The 1962 bug was the first bug to have a gas gauge. Before than you had to check your gas tank with a torch in your hand. Sometimes things got pretty hairy.

    • @CapnTimbo
      @CapnTimbo  3 роки тому

      I saw a 72 yesterday where the previous owner closed up the external filler and redid a filler inside the trunk, the owner uses a dip stick. In my case spent a lot of time calibrating the gauge and bench testing as much as I could, am about 3 gallons off such that it reads more than there, would rather the other way round, but if under 1/4 time to fill, so far with that mental adjustment am ok, the speedomoter is off by 5 MPH using GPS, feel like gauge wise bug is dialed in.

      After close inspection there was very little rust, reasons, garaged a lot of its life, very good undercoating, lots of love and care by our family owners. If there was a lot of the bug rust, I would never have got this done, something for someone with great metal and welding skills and the tools.

    I love this video. I done know anything about restoring a beetle however I’ve always wanted to. I had the opportunity to purchase a’73 super beetle. It’s in rough shape but I think I’ll be ok. Want to know if the 72 and 73 are the same vehicles. If not have you done anything on a 73 SB.

    • @CapnTimbo
      @CapnTimbo  4 роки тому

      Ricola, I knew nothing about beetles when I inherited it. I have seen on VW videos that 73 had some minor changes on the beetle that mostly look cosmetic on the interior and maybe the front shield was more curved. The improved the front end suspension on the 73, the 72 being known for the super beetle shimmy that would develop from one part going bad and taking the rest with it. Suppliers today are using better materials for the bushings. If you do work on a bug, read the reviews and try to get the better parts as they probably last longer, but also fit better, fit seems to be an issue with various parts. Get ready to bend or press a few things. One thing is for sure, I know every nut and bolt on this car now!

    I had a 69 blue bug when I was 18 and I loved it! I had to get a daily driver and the new owner got in an accident with it and smushed it. I can't wait to get another blue bug like yours again to share with my son!

      Jordan, recently I was looking a utube vid of a vw get together and was amazed how many are still out there and in really good and tricked out shape, although you might have to settle for a garage find, but if you do, good luck on the save, these little bugs get a lot of attention that I did not see coming.

      Funny story, the car spent most of its life in Seatle, my older brother spent 4 weeks in Kauai after Iniki doing insurance stuff and brought back the sticker, the funny thing is there is an earlier post here from a DJ at that radio station at the same time my brother was there.

      Thank you for the kind words, there is a little bit more to the story, I inherited the car from my son when he passed and did not know what to do with it, not a car rebuild guy. My wife and I were on Maui and I was walking and happened across a rebuilt 66 in a parking lot and was curious. Eventually found the owner working in a restaurant and he motived me to rebuild the car. 2 years ago in Maui I found him again and let him know he was my inspiration. Hey quick question I have a 1970 VW bug that I am restoring and I was wondering how you got the driver seat out. I got the passenger seat out no problem but the driver side seat is refusing to move it goes forward a little bit then stops as it is about to come off. Anyway advice on how to get it out fully?

    • @CapnTimbo
      @CapnTimbo  3 роки тому +1

      Funny you should ask, I just pulled it a couple days ago.
      In the inside of the driver seat right rail by the shifter and and just behind the slide adjustment handle, and you will want a flashlight, is a piece of spring metal on the underside of the rail keeping the slider from coming.
      If you have two people this works best, one person takes a regular screwdriver and press down on the metal keeper on the end towards the back seat, you will see that it will push down, then another person is on the driver door side and pulls on the slider release and moves the seat forward to clear that keeper. If one person when try to slide the seat the screwdriver tends to slip off, but if you keep at it you can get the seat to clear enough to then go to the driver side and slide it the rest of the way off. Passenger side way easier...
