    I used to have an old VW camper bus, it leaked oil like a sieve. I replaced the engine and tweaked it with aftermarket header and exhaust system. It would lift the front end off the ground on take off after all the mods were done. I had to sell it because my wife was afraid to drive it, I on the other hand loved it. To this day that was one of the worst decisions I believe I ever made. I always loved the original VW smell.... Good memories

      And for some reason my car has that oil smell, well at least I know it still has oil in it!

      John, thanks a bunch for nice note, turns out this was only the beginning, "Timothy is working on the bug" has become a typical response from my wife when someone is asking where am I! But everyone loves the bug and it's a blast to drive, well worth the effort. You got a bug or getting one?

    Looks amazing 👏 😍. As a child my mother had a 1976 super beetle, hers was also yellow and when she had it restored painted it blue also. I loved that car and it started my wanting of VW beetles. They're great cars and I think everyone should at least have the opportunity to drive one sometime in their life

      I was never a beetle owner or driver until inheriting the 72 Super.
      Like you it has grown on me, am pretty protective of it.
      Now living in an apartment and its a pretty frequent that a resident has bug stories to share with me, there's lot's of goodness around these bugs and feeling more like the right thing to have saved it.

      I spent a lot of time on UA-cam learning how to do many steps, my goal was to embed clips of key things learned / tops and tricks that also tried to make the video interesting. Although it is a somewhat simple car, it does require you to learn lots of auto skills AND patience!!! If I never see a soldering iron again...

      Jordan, recently I was looking a utube vid of a vw get together and was amazed how many are still out there and in really good and tricked out shape, although you might have to settle for a garage find, but if you do, good luck on the save, these little bugs get a lot of attention that I did not see coming.

      Glad you liked it Mario! Turns out the engine case has been a bit too stressed over the last 300k miles, so we replaced it with a new one and added a well balanced fly wheel, 125 rockers, filter and V1 zinc oil, purring like a kitten and driving that air conditioner with no issues.

      Mr G, if I could do it all over again, would do a bunch of things different. For those here that have done restores before, they got a lot of knowledge just cannot get any other way than from jumping in. I hope you do it and find some items in the video that point you in the right directions. When we drive it here in Fort Lauderdale, it gets waves, stares, smiles and conversations at red lights, who knew? Adding larger cylinders, 125 rockers, oil filter, and air conditioning is paying off!

Enjoy your beetle, am going to post a video here soon on the electric trunk latch I used to replace the glove box puller than to date I cannot get to work that you might like to install on your bug. Thanks for the kind note and take care.

    My Dad (who passed last Dec) had 2 bugs he commuted to work nightly as we grew up. My mother learned how to drive a stick shift in the late 60's which a rare thing for a lady and this ended up being my brothers first car when he got his Driver's License. That thing had slotted chrome rims, the best stereo Alpine system w/ Kenwood speakers and was a super clean car b/c my family kept all their vehicles in mint condition. People to this day will comment on social media about his car. Unfortunately, he was the family member that lost his battle w/ cancer at 35 years old (w/ a 3 year old son at the time). My mom lost her battle in '08, but my dad went to the ripe old age of 85! Love you "Pops!" I bought one and currently started back restoring after a 2 year layoff b/c of personal reason. I want to dedicate it when finish to them all!!! This story touched my soul and made me smile b/c we have many pictures of our younger days w/ that old bug! I hope to finish this (in Florida) by Winter's end. Wish me luck and great job to these family members from past and present!!! :)

      Hey Keith, sorry to be delayed on this response. Along my labor of love of this restore, I constantly asked my departed owners "what would you do" for paint, not staying stock on this or that, should I spend for X, on and on, they were with my whether they wanted to or not. You know, probably not, but in spirit and my heart their memory is kept alive, until the bug hit the streets. Now there is a whole other chapter, people just love the bugs, so my departed family members get the love, not me, its for them. They gotta be happy with that outcome. For some reason they loved their bug, and now I do!!!
      I wish you tons of enjoyment, greasy hands, busted knuckles and googling Samba on your journey and destination for your bug.
      It is well worth it when you want to take a drive.
      You will be someone in your bug, when you get into your other daily driver you will be invisible/just another car, such an odd thing this bug world is.
      What part of Florida?
      Am near Miami.

He spent 5 weeks on Kauai handling claims for Iniki in 92. He was treated extremely well while there. Being a west coast family Hawaii has given us wonderful lifelong memories and I wanted to keep his/that memory on the car.

    I have a 1973 Super Beetle and want to restore it like this except I am going to leave mine the original yellow color because in my state it is a big process to get the color changed on the registration and title and cost a $90 retitling fee so I am going to keep it the same color. I just have to get it running first I am a mechanic and have no clue what’s wrong with it lol.

    • @CapnTimbo
      @CapnTimbo  4 роки тому +1

      Ha, when I took in the title it had the wrong year and the guy at the DMV was pretty cool since they cannot look up the VIN for much. He pretty much asked me what to put on the title when doing the transferring, and done! I think we Google the weight and some other stuff. I hope you DMV will be flexible.

    The 1962 bug was the first bug to have a gas gauge. Before than you had to check your gas tank with a torch in your hand. Sometimes things got pretty hairy.

    • @CapnTimbo
      @CapnTimbo  3 роки тому

      I saw a 72 yesterday where the previous owner closed up the external filler and redid a filler inside the trunk, the owner uses a dip stick. In my case spent a lot of time calibrating the gauge and bench testing as much as I could, am about 3 gallons off such that it reads more than there, would rather the other way round, but if under 1/4 time to fill, so far with that mental adjustment am ok, the speedomoter is off by 5 MPH using GPS, feel like gauge wise bug is dialed in.

    Out here in the West we cut the front and back ends off the Bug. Cut and twist the front end suspension. Get a thick gage piece of sheet metal for a skid plate. Buy a tri mill exhaust for starters and end up having a heck of a lot more fun than driving and old stock Bug around. But now days old VWs are getting hard to find. Bajas in their day was the way to go.
