Great work Pete and your crew. I drove past the field back in April on the way home from the Kent & East Sussex railway and noticed then that not a lot appeared to have happened so hopefully it has a bright future.
Hi Steve. Like you at the K&ESR, where I work, I drove past this for years, wondering if salvation would arrive. The owners have even been on the Wealden Pullman train. I wondered where she had gone. Years ago as an Ensign supplier, I was offered first choice of the hundred so RMs, sitting at Purfeet. Reupholstered, recent full paint and a great AEC., … for not a lot. "But where could I keep it?" I said. I already had three Dennis fire engines. OH only if I had known. Hindsight's everything.
I really enjoyed this video. As a "geezer from the smoke", I remember with joy as a boy who used to travel on the route 123 from Ilford to Manor House on Saturdays to see my gran. Always got the upper deck front seats. Good old RM's.

Excellent recovery. I think those routemasters must have been in a lot of peoples past, me included. Something about them that makes them appealing. Well done.
My father was a driver in the Royal Engineers during WW2 from 1939 onwards. In the early 60s I remember going with him to the Chiswick bus dept for him to take his Public Vehicle test which he passed. He was then based at Mortlake garage and later used to drive RMs on the 96 bus route to Dartford and I remember seeing him parked up outside the Museum in Market street. England today seems like another world now, far removed from the country he and his comrades thought they had saved. 😢

This made me so happy and actually brought a sentimental tear to my eye. Until the age of 6 I lived in a British Leyland 600. Long before the New Age movement (I'm 45 now). The day my parents sold it and the new owners drove it away, I was inconsolable. Apparently it was to make it's way to Portugal, but I have no idea if it did or where it is now. My parents would take it to the odd fair and festival but it was mainly static whilst they built/converted our new home. after see that bus for about 30 years glad to see that someone is going to help her .i had a RF greenline single single deck in the early eighties was parked by crystal palace football ground then arenal fans smashed almost all the windows broke my heart i had to sell it was brought by a group of lads who converted it to a 5berth camper last postcard i got it it was in UAE
I drove these in service (an RML though) around 1985 ish - I drove the number 9 out of Stamford Brook - full route was Mortlake to Liverpool Street Station I only did it for a couple of years as I didn't want to drive the one man buses so transferred to the Underground maintenance. I'll never forget the fun I had during that time with my conductor Martin McGrory who lived in Brentford - happy days 😊
Absolutely brilliant, a nice success indeed, well done to you and all that have been involved to get 843 in your barn, safe and sound. Roll on the next upload 👍💪
Congratulations Pete and all of your friends & colleagues for getting her safe. Thank you so much for sharing this news and keeping us grateful followers up to date.👍🦉
Fantastic, another RM saved. I love these busses and have been the major mechanic on two RMAs airport busses used by BEA in the 60s. So glad to see you save her. As for towing the bus down slopes add a vehicle to the other end and use its brakes to slow the roll when needed. Bit like a tug of war you cant break her in half.
Fantastic news! I´ve been watching your channel for years, since before I moved over here! Best wishes from rural Spain from an old and retired petrol/diesel head (and former PSV driver).
It's such a refreshing change to see one of thease field/barn finds to finally get saved instead of being left to rot and vandalised. That could have been much worse
Oh geez, Pete. Now you've done it. I think you're going to have to unplug Compo's battery and hide him under a good hefty tarp for a week and hope he forgets. In his mind this Herculean effort was all directed by him, and all thanks to him was accomplished. Maybe if you drain his fluids all memory will be lost and when you wake him up, he'll see a "new" bus and just think you're as mad as he already thinks you are. One can hope. Truly an amazing effort and the beginning of a restoration that will definitely be worth watching. I had a bit of personal experience of that kind, many years ago. I bought a 28' (single-deck) school bus from an auction and had it towed. The garage it was towed to had a resident equivalent of Lord Barrington who loved working on International engines. Brilliant work, and inexpensive because I had tripped over a door lintel and gave the auctioneer a strange handshake. Everything went strangely well thereafter. Bizarre, but true.
You left us all in suspense where this bus was going to end up. 😄Nothing but ball breaking videos involving this bus. Pleased it all worked out as you negotiated it to be thus far.
So good to see this bus getting rescued. myself and my twin brother both used to drive RMs in the 80s. At the time i would not have believed how nostalgic the feelings would become, just being glad to climb down at the end of a shift. I would love to get behind the wheel again one day. good luck with the project .
I've driven past this old girl many many times over the years in its rural resting place and often wondered what would become of it after sitting idle for so many years. I'm 'tickled pink' to discover your channel and find something that I've actually seen in the flesh so to speak.
Having restored rm 2671 so glad your saving another one bit of a nightmare charging the emergency brake back up on them , sad life people have to wreck stuff like this
I drove the guy arab Lancashire United Transport. Brilliant buses. PSV 1 back in the day...A conductor first year at 20, then into driving instructions at 21...9 years lots of changes in buses 9ver those years...but a great job and decent money with plenty of overtime..Great video cheers 🍻
i just really can not understand why people wont either give away or sell for cheap to people who is willing to restore and care for the vehicle instead of just leaving it out there to rot away. they claim they will do it, they will restore it, but days turn into weeks, weeks into months, then 1-2 decades later, the vehicle remains in the same spot, untouched since the day it was left there years prior, everyone knows the day they get around to work on it wont ever come, yet they refuse to hand it over to someone who everyone knows will actually work on it and care for it. nice to see the bus is finally being taken care of after all the years it has been left to rot. and vandals really piss me off as well, society is way to lenient on them.
Kind of remembers me of when once thought to myself: "Uh, it won't hurt if I just left the car unlocked for a minute in front of my own house, I'll be back in no time..." And then a tramp sat in it smoking and burning the carpet.
I reckon if you live long enough you will rescue every Routemaster ever made or at least made certain that every one made contributed at least one part to the ones which remain….and so…they all do live!
Great job and these vandals make me sick , all the hard work you had done too. I have been a bus driver for 32 years and our buses get their windows smashed quite often and besides the criminal damage they are causing it puts passengers at risk too . Well done and keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing.

after see that bus for about 30 years glad to see that someone is going to help her .i had a RF greenline single single deck in the early eighties was parked by crystal palace football ground then arenal fans smashed almost all the windows broke my heart i had to sell it was brought by a group of lads who converted it to a 5berth camper last postcard i got it it was in UAE
👍👍
I could smell the clutch in that quad burning all the way from Canada.
😂😂😂 she’s alright
I drove these in service (an RML though) around 1985 ish - I drove the number 9 out of Stamford Brook - full route was Mortlake to Liverpool Street Station I only did it for a couple of years as I didn't want to drive the one man buses so transferred to the Underground maintenance. I'll never forget the fun I had during that time with my conductor Martin McGrory who lived in Brentford - happy days 😊
👍👍❤️❤️
Absolutely brilliant, a nice success indeed, well done to you and all that have been involved to get 843 in your barn, safe and sound. Roll on the next upload 👍💪
Thanks 👍
"damn hippies!" tbh, I am amazed at how good condition it is all in - the wiring looked really good for years in a field. Obvs built well
Yep, they are very resilient
Congratulations Pete and all of your friends & colleagues for getting her safe. Thank you so much for sharing this news and keeping us grateful followers up to date.👍🦉
👍👍
Fantastic, another RM saved. I love these busses and have been the major mechanic on two RMAs airport busses used by BEA in the 60s. So glad to see you save her. As for towing the bus down slopes add a vehicle to the other end and use its brakes to slow the roll when needed. Bit like a tug of war you cant break her in half.
👍👍👍
Awesome work, well done to everyone involved. Now to look forward to a restoration!
👍👍👍
Fantastic news! I´ve been watching your channel for years, since before I moved over here! Best wishes from rural Spain from an old and retired petrol/diesel head (and former PSV driver).
Thanks for your support
It's such a refreshing change to see one of thease field/barn finds to finally get saved instead of being left to rot and vandalised. That could have been much worse
👍👍👍
👍👍
I miss seeing compo lol Pete’s awful needs to share limelight with compo lol
@@PeteAndHisBus when you said quad bike I thought you were doubling up Compo to shift the RM
You left us all in suspense where this bus was going to end up. 😄Nothing but ball breaking videos involving this bus. Pleased it all worked out as you negotiated it to be thus far.
👍👍👍
Great video, good job there are people like you out there. Good luck with it all.
Thanks 👍
So good to see this bus getting rescued. myself and my twin brother both used to drive RMs in the 80s. At the time i would not have believed how nostalgic the feelings would become, just being glad to climb down at the end of a shift. I would love to get behind the wheel again one day. good luck with the project .
Thanks for watching
In the 60s and 70s, Lisbon also had this type of bus in service; they were Leyland, painted green.
👍👍
I love that you are saving her!
👍👍
You are my heroes! Maneuvering a double-decker bus in tight spaces and on slopes must be a thing in itself. Glad my hobby is an old Land Rover ☺☺
I’ve got a series 3 which I adore! But ya gotta love a good bud 😂😜
Well done Pete and your team definitely needed to be out of that field 👍👍 Fantastic video as always 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
I've driven past this old girl many many times over the years in its rural resting place and often wondered what would become of it after sitting idle for so many years. I'm 'tickled pink' to discover your channel and find something that I've actually seen in the flesh so to speak.
❤️❤️👍👍
5:27 the satisfaction of it coming to life again
Great isn’t it!!
Having restored rm 2671 so glad your saving another one bit of a nightmare charging the emergency brake back up on them , sad life people have to wreck stuff like this
Very sad indeed! 👍
Fantastic work. Well done Pete and team 😊
Many thanks!
Don't often go up that road, always look for it,then forgot you got it going, well done.
Im sorry I’ve made the e scenery somewhat dull but it’s better for her really 😜👍
Wow, what a story!!
👍👍
I drove the guy arab Lancashire United Transport. Brilliant buses. PSV 1 back in the day...A conductor first year at 20, then into driving instructions at 21...9 years lots of changes in buses 9ver those years...but a great job and decent money with plenty of overtime..Great video cheers 🍻
👍👍
Great video, thank you , keep up the good work 👍🇬🇧❤️
It's really nice watching how your keeping these great buses alive, wishing you all the best 👍 🇬🇧❤️
Thanks 👍
👍
Bravo.I spent a fair bit of my childhood travelling in a bus like that. Glad you have saved her.
👍👍
i just really can not understand why people wont either give away or sell for cheap to people who is willing to restore and care for the vehicle instead of just leaving it out there to rot away.
they claim they will do it, they will restore it, but days turn into weeks, weeks into months, then 1-2 decades later, the vehicle remains in the same spot, untouched since the day it was left there years prior, everyone knows the day they get around to work on it wont ever come, yet they refuse to hand it over to someone who everyone knows will actually work on it and care for it.
nice to see the bus is finally being taken care of after all the years it has been left to rot.
and vandals really piss me off as well, society is way to lenient on them.
Thanks for watching
Madness, seeing a UA-cam video of an old bus I’ve driven past for as long as i can remember. Such a small weird world.
Haha cool
Kind of remembers me of when once thought to myself: "Uh, it won't hurt if I just left the car unlocked for a minute in front of my own house, I'll be back in no time..." And then a tramp sat in it smoking and burning the carpet.
😂😂
WHAT A LABOUR OF LOVE, THIS MUST BE FOR YOU GUYS, LITERALLY.
👍👍😂😂
I reckon if you live long enough you will rescue every Routemaster ever made or at least made certain that every one made contributed at least one part to the ones which remain….and so…they all do live!
😂😂
Great job and these vandals make me sick , all the hard work you had done too.
I have been a bus driver for 32 years and our buses get their windows smashed quite often and besides the criminal damage they are causing it puts passengers at risk too .
Well done and keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching 👍
Another one that's going to be saved
👍👍
Fantastic work Pete. Another RM saved. Looking forward to the videos ahead
Thanks 👍
