    It’s impossible to know how a changed system will play out, and I think everyone has trepidation about that, but I think these reforms are good governance through-and-through. The worst part of the current system has been that each city council member also becomes administrator of a major city department. It’s ridiculous: it creates an admin who is the least informed people in the department, who has conflicts of interests (budgetary horse trading has resulted), who wants to “leave a mark” with a pet project, and who won’t be around long. Now, someone with experience in transportation will head PBOT.

    Watching this as I sit in a hotel in my hometown of Portland, visiting with the goal of possibly moving back. :) Thanks for the helpful content!! Yes, I've heard all about the homeless issues -- but coming from much, much bigger global cities since I moved away, it hasn't phased me too much on my visit. Sure, it's a lot for the size of the city. It's noticeable because it wasn't this bad before. Also - when you compare taxes to NYC and LA, don't forget that they *also* have sales tax, and the COL is much higher (a 1BD in Manhattan is going to be around $4000 comparably. Not, like, $2300 like it is in Slabtown or the Pearl).

    Excellent video capturing most reasons why no one should consider moving to Portland or its suburbs.

    Can you talk about how earthquakes impact houses around Portland? Does that mean older houses arent as safe? Are there building codes in place?

    • @livinginoregon
      @livinginoregon  5 місяців тому +2

      We don't have earthquakes strong enough or frequent enough to be a thing. Homes are required to be bolted to the foundation (straps for manufactured).

    • @richwhite594
      @richwhite594 27 днів тому

      You mean the buildings built many years ago that have experienced many earthquakes yet remain beautiful, or the new ones built to some of the strictest building codes in the nation? They are pretty safe.

    Thank so much for that info!
    On taxes does that mean one gets extra 3% in addition to the already high Oregon income taxes? (I am planning on moving here and getting a doctor job, so will defn be on the higher side of income but would love to save where I can)

      Don't do it. Seattle area much better if you insist on living in the PNW. See my comment above.

      Yes, and it will go up .8%. This however is not true of Washington or Clackamas county. Get in touch with us if you have more questions - www.portland.gov/revenue/personal-tax#:~:text=The%20Multnomah%20County%20Preschool%20for,and%20%24400%2C000%20for%20joint%20filers.

      Don't move into Multnomah county. People like myself have 2 choices, stay in Multnomah county and watch 40k vaporize a year in taxes (state tax, homeless tax, & pre-school tax) or simply move a few miles down the road. Portland voters love to eat the upper middle class and any smart money would move to support other local economies.

    You’re going to be paying more in taxes, and it sounds to me that your local politicians are trying to consolidate power, which is not necessarily a great thing, it leads to tyranny, but overall good video

    Portland, once THE place in the PNW. I left in 1997. If you come, please have at least $500K- $750K for a home, a job to support your new PNW-lifestyle, and know you will be taxed at every turn you make. I hope you like the sight of blue tarps, broken-down RVs, open-air drug use, and the smell of urine.

      Unfortunately you are correct. The type of people there is getting worse and worse too. A bunch of criminals and crazy people...very few smart/reasonable people who look and smell presentable. I need to get out ASAP.

    Homelessness, extreme drug use Consistently going into state of emergencies ( thanks to my city. You guys voted for this) poor management of the homeless community and instead of fixing the problem they’re just accommodating for it. Increased in crime, riots, little respect for small businesses in the area. People that don’t know how to drive in the rain even though we live in the PNW. if you can look over all that the PNW is beautiful lol 💀 some memorable hiking spots and the summers are beautiful. Also, it’s not my taste, but we also have a lot of strip clubs.😂😂

    The graffiti, garbage and sidewalk campers are horrible. Moved out in the early 2004. Best choice we did. Our old neighborhood has more violence since we escaped east country. Good luck Portland.
