Lived in the PDX area since 75 and your assessment is pretty darn good imho. But you left out the fact that the entire area has nightmarish traffic.Portland has always had its share of homelessness, but it used to be concentrated just off the Burnside bridge area. Now there are homeless camps EVERYWHERE in the city. The outskirts and suburbs around Portland don’t really tolerate the campers,so anyone thinking about moving here,I would recommend visiting first.

Sounds like all the major cities are encountering the homeless population boom. It got really bad here in LA over the past years but surrounding suburbs are having a hard time combatting the overflow of LA.

I moved from Las Vegas Nevada to Milwaukie, Oregon in 2012. I lived in Milwaukie for 11 years. My partner passed away and I decided to make a change and I moved out to happy Valley. I was not happy and happy Valley is so far away from anything and you have to drive to every store anything you wanna go to After two years living there, I moved back to Milwaukie and I can be at any store. I wanna be at or any pub or restaurant in just a few minutes. I moved into the brand new HenleyPlace apartment homes, which are absolutely beautiful and I am totally happy to be back in Milwaukie where I can walk anywhere I wanna go in just a few minutes. living in Milwaukie, you can find homes anywhere from seven or $800,000 to over millions of dollars on the river. It’s a beautiful area to discover in Oregon and now that I’ve been here 14 years I will never move anywhere else. Lake Oswego and West linn are wonderful but it is so hard to get anywhere from that area. Anywhere in the southwest side of the river is almost impossible to get anywhere to none of the roads go through. They don’t connect. It’s all constantly changing streets and going different directions and once you go to the west side, you can’t come back to the east side the same way. It’s craziness to get anywhere in the west side on the east side all the streets are north south, east and west.

Good video. I grew up in Laurelhurst, but have lived in Happy Valley for the last 30 years. Both are great places to live; I miss the old Craftsman style homes of Laurelhurst and the shopping on Hawthorne, but Happy Valley is great for being close to Portland without the crime and crowds.

Currently in Atlanta. Definitely prefer the west side. I haven't decided between the north (e.g. near the Japanese Garden) or south (perhaps a house in the hills or by Tyron). I'd love a midcentury modern house (like a Rummer) where i can walk out to forest trails and have a short commute to coffee shops, good gyms, and Powell's Books.

It’s super expensive to live in the city of Portland. The reason there are so many people living in their cars is because nobody can afford an apartment on a $15-20/hr salary. I was fortunate to buy my home in Estacada before prices jumped but it’s getting busy out here too. For me it’s worth the drive. I’m surrounded by forest but it’s definitely not as convenient.
Lol when I first moved here it took me a couple weeks to figure out the grid system. I still need a GPS most of the time to get around and I’ve been here 10 years lol. If you’re looking to work at OHSU just know you are going to have to pay for parking or you can take Trimet.

Central East side Portland beyond 205 is very liveable if the west side suburbs are too sleepy for you, or inner SE is too expensive for you. The David Douglas School District is fantastic. People familiar with the East Bay Area in CA will find themselves at home here. More diversity than west side and closer to all the cool stuff in inner SE. The federal government just approved a $20 million upgrade to 122nd street to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians. It's only a matter of time before the various car dealerships are rezoned into mixed-use housing and small business. It's a little rough, but Portland's crime rate is lower than Oakland's and the houses are 50% the cost, larger and in better condition.
Also, the houses in inner SE might be cuter, but the spaces are much smaller AND my friends in inner SE get their cars broken into far more often. The trade off is that cool stuff is more walkable there, but I'm hopeful that more redevelopment is done here to create a stronger sense of a neighborhood.
With Portland recently changing their city charter to have their council members district-oriented instead of at-large, there will be more pressure for elected officials to make major infrastructure changes to improve this community.
That said, there are still neighborhoods to avoid. Avoid anywhere near a bottle drop, areas around major streets. Look towards areas near schools, and meet with the neighbors around a house you might want to get the full scoop.

If you make under $60k a year you can't comfortably afford to live here and if you make over $120k your paying a marginal state and local income tax of over 13.5% which is higher than california new york or any other tax area in america paired with the 2nd highest property tax rate in nation, in a city with homes significantly above the national average. With that said instead move to Vancouver, WA or a Seattle suburb if you like the pnw, in regard to seattle though more expensive, wages are substantially more and you can actually keep most of your income well living in a first class city If you can find a job in Vancouver, WA there is absolutely no need to move to the desolate south known as portland, you pay 0% income tax, with wages that are the exact same, and have the ability to drive 5-10 mins to shopping center at the border to avoid almost all sales tax, oh and your paying about half the property tax in Vancouver too, generally better schools, absolutely only a fraction of the crime, and best of all you are allowed to call yourself a Washingtonian which warrants a bit more respect than saying your from its metaphorical slacker little brother oregon
