Another great example of wood turning. Making a beautiful bowl out of what many people would describe as firewood
Thank you very much David!
Beautiful bowl Doug... I guess you could say it's a real "hard ash" bowl😊 great job
It sure is! Thank you Skip
Wow I love the grooves we can see when you show us up close. Nice shavings shot! It’s satisfying watching the wood come off. Piece of Ash lol Mixy Mixy! I like how you show us all the spots you put the resin! Good tips!
Thank you Robin, not sure what I did wrong this should have aired at midnight and it was still set to Private this morning, oh well maybe next time
That was a grain pattern that needed to come out and show itself off... great piece, Doug.👊💨
You got that right! Thank you Ben
So much beauty and character in this one!
Thanks again K,
I love leaving the pith in, letting it naturally crack then fill with resin. Shows the wood’s movement and adds character imo. Very nice bowl.
Thank you Kathy, well I hope it doesn't crack anymore,
Love the character of your "ash" bow! I can see it on the Thanksgiving table full of fruits and flowers! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Lynda, You are so welcome!
No, filled with pop corn for the game. 🍗🍗
That came out really nice, Doug! Love the spalting!
Thank you Billy
Always cool to see a pro create. something out of a chunk of wood Thanks Doug. 👍
Thank You Robert
Beautiful bowl with fantastic grain patterns. I hope you turn more ash.👍👍
Thank you Thank you, I'll have to go dig through the wood pile outside and see if I can find anymore

Another nice bowl 👍👍👍 it's got it's own natural beauty. Lots of info on the resin chipping, makes sense, talking about the "feel" of the tool. Thanks for the time and the video. Have a great week.
Thank You Scott, I've been asked multiple times how it's done, it's really hard to say so I just thought I would show it, I hope it helps
It's a great bowl Doug! I enjoyed the shot looking past the rim seeing the shop. I really liked that!
Thank you Clayton
Just Wonderful Bowl. Cheers Doug 👍 big thumbs-up
Thank you Thank you Glad you enjoyed it
most excellent! We have ash standing dead ll over the place. i keep wishing people would get them cut while the wood is still good. i keep watching and listening for it to happen. Lovely bowl Doug.
Thank you Douggie, I do have another standing half dead wood, the main part of it is dead but new branches have grown out of it from the lower section
That looks amazing Doug! 👏 👏👍👍

Thank you Eric, I think so too!
It may be just a bowl, but it is a beautiful bowl. The colors in the grain and the defects in the wood are great.
Thank you Jean
Doug wonderful bowl as always. Would have loved to see more of the midnight purple, but all good nonetheless. Hope all is well good sir with you and the family. Hope the garden is coming along well and the puppies are well also.
Really nice. The resin is very subtle but gives it a nice highlight. 👍🏽

Thank you so much 😀
Nice bowl! Beautiful colors!
Thank you Linda! Cheers!
Reminds me of the classic:
Is your lathe running?
Better go catch it then!😂
Thank you , I am sure it has a bad bearing, I will bolt the new lathe when I get it to the floor
you keep on crushing it.
Gorgeous! As always!
Thank you Thank you Amy
Beautiful work, stunning piece of art ❤
Thank you so much Maddie 😀
💜💙 beautiful bowl, great work!
Thank you Jennifer! 😊
Really nice! You have a very nice piece of ash!
Thank you so much 😊
Nice big bowl, Doug. Love turning ash. It's always been cooperative for me. Ever since I heard Richard Raffan instruct to "let the wood come to the tool" that chip out or tear out stopped for me. Once I learned to keep the pressure down on the tool rest I felt that next level of understanding. You described it well for resin.
Right on, Thank you Jay, I've been asked multiple times how it's done, it's really hard to say so I just thought I would show it,
@PohlBarnProductions You explained well and the fact is a good portion is just people trying until they get the feel for the clean cut.
DOUG THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOLEDGE
you are very welcome Larry, thanks again for watching
Beautiful bowl Doug
Thank you kindly Glenn
Nice job on the ash bowl..I like the flat open design.. ☺️👍

Thank you Thank you Mike
Great bowl!
Thank you Kathy
I wasn't sure if she was a beach or a birch but she sure was a fine piece of Ash
LOL I love it and I am so gonna pin it to the top !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again for watching
Very nice the grain is nice.
Thank you Thank you David
Very nice Doug, I have some Olive Ash that I got when it was taken down in my local church yard ( Big )
Thank you Thank you Doug
I was surprised that the bark on that big ol' piece of ash didn't have any bite! LOL I was seriously expecting you to show off you battle wounds! But it looks awesome even without the blood sacrifice!
the bark was pretty rotten, the bugs killed it off long before I took it down, Thanks again for watching
very nice Doug!
Thank you Thank you Rick
Lovely bowl Doug. Beautiful colour and the purple in the bug holes makes a nice contrast 😀
Yes it does! Thank you Thank you
Beautiful bowl, Doug put a lot of fruit in that. ❤ 😂
Thank You Randy
Great piece, Brother👍
Thank you kindly Steve
Morning Doug, it's just a bowl but it's a beautifully turned rustic bowl. I like it alot.😘😘 Hope you & Barb are doing ok, do
you have anymore furbabies to show us.💖💖🐕🐕
Thanks so much Ellen, we are doing great thank you,
*Doug, some wood is real hard and some wood is real soft... so that would make the difference when working with different types of wood. Maybe that is why some woodworkers only use certain types of wood as well... but you are willing to put your hand at all types of wood, to experiment and have fun trying. 🙂🙂.nz*
Thank you Andrea, it's just wood to me, I just never experienced some of the grabbing like it was doing or how long it took me to sand it
Good looking bowl. I use CA to fill in cracks, sometimes I will mix up some resin if they are very big.
Right on, Thank you Harry, for the most part the CA doesn't work right for me, I did use it but it wasn't enough to bother filming
Sounds like the speed of the lathe and the chipout issue are basically a Catch-22 situation.
You have to spin fast to get a good, smooth cut, but that means the piece will tend to wobble even worse. But slowing down the RPM means you don't get a good, smooth cut. The whole idea is to round the piece down so you can minimize the wobble as much as possible, but that takes finesse, I am guessing.
It's a balancing act.
In any case, another very excellent job. You're quite the artist with the lathe.
Thank you Liam, I think the speed and chip out are related,
Definitely an awesome bowl! Ya ash is hard I went through a dozen scroll saw blades on one box.
Thank You Ron, yes it is !
Hi Dougggggg!!!!
Hey Robin !!!!!
Very nice Doug
Thank you Dennis
Turned out realy well Doug.Rather like cobber.🤠
Thank you Thank you Daryl
💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you Connie
Nice bowl 👍I have a lot of ash in my yard 😢
Thank you Jim
Nice bowl. Personally not a big fan of ash (coloring) but its a nice bowl, good job
Nice.
Thank you Amber
GooD)))))))
Thanks again Meront
Nice! Seems like you coulda shaped the outside then used uv resin to fill any holes/voids since you removed the majority of the resin. 😊
Thank you Normagene, I did use UV resin and I filmed it but I have no clue where that footage went
@@PohlBarnProductions I did hear you say that but I meant right from the start…why not shape it then use uv resin to fill any of the holes/voids. Instead of using so much resin at the start which it looked like 90+% was turned off. Or did it just have way to many cracks/voids? It just seemed like a lot of resin just went to waste. 🤔
well the UV doesn't cure all that good once you color it, only on the top, the light needs to penetrate it, and it can not if it's colored, and I have limited UV, but Supplied with Resin, I was also trying to fill as much into the cracks as I could so the inside turn would be done
It would be a shallow bowl without the pith. Turned out good.
Thank you Rick, yeah I thought about taking it out and came to the same conclusion
Doug that pressure pot that you have from Harbor Freight, under what name they sale it cause I can't find it and my daughter want to start turning now that I can't so I going to guide her thru the lathe from my wheel chair.
Hey Carlos, if you couldn't find it here it is, www.harborfreight.com/2-1-2-half-gallon-pressure-paint-tank-66839.html If that wasn't what you were asking I then misunderstood,
That is exactly what I was asking, thank you so much again, she is now another of your fans
Outstanding job Doug as usual. Could you tell me what gouge your using? I've been using carbide but would like to learn how to use gouges.
Thank you Steve, I am using a Carter and Son's 5/8 Bowl Gouge,
Thanks for the quick response Doug. You sir make it look easy and I especially loved this one because you explained your moving slow with epoxy. @@PohlBarnProductions
it is what it is I guess, I know it's not easy and I forced myself to learn because the carbide cutter are pricey and dull quickly with the resin, or the mica powders in the resin.
Hey, I just had an idea....can you work in Ash ash? as in burnt wood? Take the Ash shavings and burn them a bit, put them in a bowl, then add some resin? Maybe a light colored resin for the contrast? Or have you already done that in the past? I know you have used resin shavings......
Cool idea! Thank You for watching
That came out beautiful, Doug. From start to finish. How many hours were you on the lathe? ~Kevin
Thank you Buddy, maybe 3 total hours of working on it, over night for the resin pour and the most time was spent on sanding that hard wood !
Thank you for answering my question. Have a great week, Doug. ~Kevin
No problem Kevin,
Ash is TOUGH to hollow out. I made the mistake of doing my first turn on purple heart and my second on ash. I almost gave up after those two.
Thank you Jen, nice to see you making comments again !
You know when wood splinters and it all spreads out and stuff? What would happen if you put that in resin and turned it?
I've done one with the shaving from wood before, I colored the shavings with dye, it was pretty cool looking
@@PohlBarnProductions I was thinking like the ripped up end of a stump, like when a car runs into a tree or something
oh the splintered end, I've done a couple of those too
👍#825
Thank you
Are you avoiding the fire wood pile ?!!!
Thank You Carlos, actually this piece just bypassed the wood pile, the rest of it is in there someplace
@@PohlBarnProductions It is an awesome piece, like all of yours.
Whatever has happened to your friend Kim T? Will she ever be back? Thank you Doug!
So the answer to the question of How do you cut Resin is:
High (1,000+) RPM's and Slow, Gentle Cuts and Practice! Practice!! Practice!!!
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
Pretty Much, Thanks again for watching
Are you up early, or late, like me?
this was suppose to air at midnight my time, seems I didn't save it right, my bladder had me up early and I checked on it and set it to public
That's a nice bowl, Doug. Sorry, but it's just not one of my favorites. It was good to see content from you again.
Bill
I understand, Thank You Bill
