Thanks so much for this video. I live at the Old Santa Lucia pub on Yarmouth Road (the buildings are houses not apartments incidentally) and so I was attracted to watch when it came up on my Facebook. And then I was amazed to see you have referenced my book The Great Thorpe Railway Diaster 1874 (Pen and Sword Books 2021) thank you for doing that. Good luck with future videos.
Hi John, what a fantastic video, so interesting. Just found your super channel and subbed with pleasure. Looking forward to seeing other videos and new ones also.
Thank you Andreas, I try to get a new one done every two weeks, and put it out on alternate Thursdays. You might like to follow "Lost Norwich" on facebook.
I love your historical videos, so much of Norwich was lost post WW2. Thanks for recording and all your hard work and research. Please keep up your great work. Thank you.
Thank you yet again for these videos, John. I didn't realise there used to be a greyhound track in Thorpe St. Andrew. I can vaguely remember the one on the ring road in Hellesdon and the one in Sprowston though.
I love this area of Thorpe St Andrew, with the views of the river. It's such a shame the old thatched church was demolished, although the current church and its surrounding area are very attractive - when visible! Another fantastic video, so well researched and narrated. Btw, I saw the comments about the music - I know Lucy also finds it difficult to attain the right balance.
Thank you. I think the issue with music is that different people hear the overall audio in different ways and some would find music a distraction, which is the last thing I would want. So in a few videos time (having got a couple already done) I will try without music and see how it goes.
Thank you for another fascinating look-back on old Norwich. Just thinking of those gold painted pillar boxes, I seem to remember that they weren't painted gold by Royal Mail but by independent actors who incidentally were well organised and did it one night in one swift swoop. Royal Mail took a very dim view of the stunt, and said it'd cost thousands to put right. Why the box in your video remains gold is a bit of a mystery.
Great video as always. I will visit Carey's Meadow soon, lived here most of my life but didn't know about it, so thank you for that! I would question however if that photo of the St Lucia hotel at 3:36 was taken in 1992, perhaps that M reg (1994-5) Volkswagen Corrado teleported back in time? I must confess I enjoy car spotting in these videos almost as much as learning the history. Thanks for doing these videos and I look forward to the next one!
Thanks very much for your comment. As Captain Mainwaring would say "Well done, I was waiting to see who's spot that". Seriously that was very observant of you. I've checked and you're right. It was my mistake, and it was 1999. Thanks for pointing it out 👍
My Dad went to school with Pat Hagg who was the Landlord of the Buck. When on holidays to Norwich in the 80’s we went to the Buck for a few, there was Pat’s Great Dane lounging by the fire. Lovely.
In the early 60s, I went to Langley Junior and as we weren't aware of the purpose of the gazebo, we called it the witch's house - ! Well, we were only about eight years old - ! 😁
John, PLEASE can you turn the music down/off? Very difficult for us with hairing impairment to hear what you're saying. Thank you. Great video as usual.
Thanks Steve. Message received loud and clear, even if sadly the video wasn't. I have tried to keep music to a low volume but it's difficult to get it right. I have two future videos in the can with music but will exclude any music from the third one, and see if that works better. I appreciate you pointing it out.
There's a lot of information in this one! A shame the thatched church was demolished. Hopefully someone at Broadland D.C. will watch this video and do something about the bushes obscuring the gazebo. Thanks, John.
Absolutely love your videos, but a bit of constructive criticism... the music is unnecessary. Maybe if it was alot more of a lower volume in contrast to your voice over. Keep em coming though!
Thanks Ross, always happy to get constructive criticism. I have heard that one before, and have reduced the background music significantly from some early videos. But I'll certainly take your comment into account, so thank you for it.
@@Analoguebubblebath89 thanks! But I will be taking music off in a couple of videos time, as it can be difficult for people with hearing problems. Sorry but it'll be just my voice, a cure for insomnia!
Someone painted a load of post boxes Gold in Norwich one night, maybe this is one the PO missed repainting red. Although this one is unused, and was previously Black with gold highlighting.

Would love to see you carry on down the road a bit further, just till you pass my house!
Maybe one day!
Fantastic as always. Lived on Thorpe Road as a toddler and remember The Narrows and many other buildings featured. Got confirmed at The church in 1963
Thanks Theo, glad it brought back some memories.
Woooow the Yarmouth road is so amazing and beautiful. All the video is amazing. Enjoyed it
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Smashing video, John. Thanks…👏👏👏
Thank you John
Great video John - like the way you compare past and present side by side - so interesting 👌🏻
Thanks very much Edward, glad you liked it. That comparison has always fascinated me!

Thank you very much for commenting. Your book really made the stories of those involved so real, and it was a very powerful read.
Just keep them coming please. Absolutely loving the videos and they MUST be preserved for years to come. Without history where would we be?
Thank you Graham. History gives us perspective. 👍
All the very best.
Thanks for another fascinating video.
Thank you Adrian.
Great stuff yet again John, fascinating...
I try! Thanks Tim 😀
Another interesting and educational video. Keep them coming!
Thank you Thom 👍

Lovely video. I never knew about one of the Krays dying in Thorpe! I wonder what the story was behind that? Keep the videos coming :)
Thanks Andrew, here's a bit more of the story. www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/sep/23/davidpallister?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

Thanks Geoff, I suspect the bushes are on private land, so it's up to the owner, but you never know!
Is the shop "Denham" where McCarthy's 24hr cafe used to be back in the 70's (and probably earlier)?
I'm afraid I don't know that, but someone might, and might reply here.
I'm afraid not. Mac's cafe was almost opposite the entrance to the Old Hall - there are now 4 townhouses on the site.
Interesting, so what happened to the Buck in, was it converted, is it empty, no longer there?
The Buck still stands, but I don't know what it's future might be.

Thank you for all your support with your comments and interesting additional info across the videos. I appreciate them.
We love the content in the videos, but really the "music" nothing to enhance the program, rather an distraction, if not annoyance
