When I began making this video, it was intended as a record of the Anglia Square of 2024 compared to the future. However, just before releasing it on UA-cam I had to adapt it because well-developed plans for the future were dropped in February 2024. So the question now is - What Next for Anglia Square? Let me know in the comments.

This video was of much interest to me as a former resident of Eaton.
Thank you, I'm pleased you found it interesting.
My Dad lived in Leopold Close in the 1950's and as a small boy attended Unthank Collage on Newmarket Road ,located between Daniels Road and Leopold Road .The headmaster was a chap called Dudley Miller. Also in Eaton Village there was a sweet shop named Otterways .
Thank you - it's always great to get additional details which might prompt someone else's memory.
Another fantastic video
Thank you, glad you liked it!
I bought a moped from this woolies!!
I had no idea they sold them!
Excellent informative video as ever John. You have a knack of finding some amazing archive photos - ! 😊
Thank you Simon - there are some good ones aren't there. I doubt those sheep would survive in the present day!
Thanks very much for the video. I lived in Poplar Avenue, just off the Newmarket Road from 1943-1945. I was quite young then! Google maps still refuse to cover it. I remember a unit of US tanks taking a wrong turning into the cul-de-sac. The commander thought he was turning into Bluebell Road. They are had to go into reverse! It all quite frightened me. More memories, but for another day.
That's a great story, thank you for adding it - it's the sort of thing which might prompt a memory for someone else.
Super stuff as always John. Not strictly related to the content, but I was struck by the NCFC kit (@2:11). Some players have left side blue and others right side blue on their tops. Is this genuine or just an artefact of the colourization, does anybody know?
That's very interesting (and observant!) Wikipedia makes reference to this, but doesn't offer any explanation. My explanation for what it's worth - some platers were wearing their shirts inside out!
♥️
Thank you!
I was looking forward to seeing this one, particularly as I did the long walk too! Newmarket Road has kept much of its historical tree-lined identity, which is lovely except for the abundance of trees making it very difficult to find the houses we were searching for! Oh dear, the village sign! They were obviously struggling for ideas! Btw, I didn't hear any buzzing on my laptop but you should perhaps consider seeking advice about improving the quality of the sound. I know we need to improve our sound quality when we go out and about. A very enjoyable video, well-researched and presented. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment, and your help in putting this video together. Yes, the explanation behind the village sign leaves something to be desired! Sound wise, I can only think of upgrading the microphone, but I'll try a few tweaks before doing that!
Another great video! I was just thinking in a 100 years won't it be cool is someone used your videos and pictures to show how it looks now to how it will look in 2124 ! Pretty cool to think of X
It would be lovely to think of such a thing happening - maybe by that time they could convert it to three dimensions!
Superb video, John. I attended Town Close school between 1987 - 1993 and spent many days walking up the Newmarket road to get to the playing fields. I was always fascinated by the many different styles of houses. There really is so much history in this part of the city.
That's quite a walk along main roads! It's a very interesting area.
Always amazing videos!
Glad you like them!
I liked the old Images John of what is now for many just a route out of Norwich. Hope you enjoyed your Walk, looking forward to the next Video.
Thank you Dave - 3 weeks time....!
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks John...nice to know when you publish. Dave, do you walk or drive to compare the route after you have watched the video ? I wish I was young enough to be able to walk and take it all in ! 😅
@@MrJohn768 I walk depending on where it is, my wife and I are walkers so walk whenever we can. I have just had a knee replacement, so it has limited me a bit.
@@MrJohn768 Walking you get to see so much more. and can stop as long as you like at a point. I am 71 myself now.
@davegoldsmith4020 I am the same age and I love to walk 🚶♀️🚶♂️ although I have a serious operation too...but here we go ....chin up and carry on regardless!! We have our good friend here to give all this wonderful information about things to keep us informed..Thanks John 👍
I love this content but the audio is absolutely terrible! How come the buzzing is back? I live in Norwich and can help if you need :)
Thanks, I wasn't aware the buzzing had returned. I know you mentioned it on a previous video - have you changed the device on which you're listening? I was advised how to deal with it (through audio levels) and I've reduced it to 90%, which is as far as I dare go to avoid having to shout! Thanks for offering to help - any advice gratefully received!
Sounds ok to me, there is a feint buzzing but didn't notice until I saw this comment.
My sound is fine. I would not have noticed it if it had not been pointed out. I suppose if you mounted what every you are using to record onto a padded surface might just remove the slight verbration. But, I am fine with it as it is. 👍
Hello Noswim... would you be able to try watching on TV? Be a shame not to be able to enjoy watching at its best ... regards
It shounds like a grounding problem. Almost as if a mic has not been inserted quite enough.
Another excellent vid
Thanks very much, glad you liked it😊
Thank you John for all your time and effort. Newmarket rd and Eaton still seem to retain their historical look.
Thank you Martin. Yes you're right, there haven't been very many changes....but I still couldn't find that house in the snow!
I've lived in Norwich for a very long time John, but your wonderful videos show me a Norwich that I never knew existed and as I walk around, I see it with new eyes. Thank you so much.
Thank you Peter for such a kind comment.
I use to live on Eaton Street opposite the delivery entrance for Roy's/waitrose. A bit noisy at time about it was a nice place. It was even better when there was a bakery in the row of shops 😂
Thanks for your comment. Yes, a bakery there must have been very convenient!
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich it was. I think that was the first place I had seen or tried the bacon&cheese puffs. They were lovely from there.
Can't beat local bakers!
I lived over the other side of the bridge on Intwood Road. The enemy! Haha But that row of shops was great, Ron Greens for sweats, comics and stink bombs, Miles Bikes to get you bike sorted, the bakery for all kinds of goodness and the original Chinese take away too. And the cut through from the Red Lion car park into Roys, the department store, the ciggy shop, the chenmist and the supermarket.
@@GuyMiddletons I remember the corner shop and have vague memories of Mike's bikes.
Good News! Another Lost Norwich video. Thanks John.
Thank you Adrian!
My Mum had a Saturday job in Woolies' Rampant Horse Street branch in the mid 60s. I also bought my first record there and, like you John, I still have it! Your videos are a great insight into a great city. Thank you.
Thanks very much for your comment - glad I'm not the only one to keep their first record!
oh no, the audio issues are back :(
Really? I haven't changed anything since I was helped to minimise that annoying buzz....hope it didn't spoil the video for you.
Remember going to the cinema in the late 50's with my Mum (I was too young to go on my own) and we saw "Reach For The Stars" (The film about Douglas Bader) and The Dambusters
Brilliant! Thanks for the detail.
Brilliant, as always. How long does it take to research for one of these videos? Have you ever done one which included the Orford Cellar? Hope you are keeping well?
Thanks George, yes all well thank you, hope you are too. At the moment I'm doing a new video every three weeks, which fits in quite nicely. In terms of the Orford Cellar, it features briefly in a very early video I did entitled Lost Norwich - Pubs. Maybe also in one entitled Music Venues, but I'm not sure....
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich ThanksJohn, I'll find those and have a look. All good here, thank you. Take care
👍
Excellent ! Thank you, John...really enjoyed that. As to dating that photo from the cars, well, I am going to go with a Mini, a Morris and a Humber - but I can date the photo as 2nd June 1962 from the nasturtium beds !! 😃 😀 😄
Thanks very much, much amused by your precision!
Would love to see you carry on down the road a bit further, just till you pass my house!
Maybe one day!
I found this so fascinating. I immediately watched it through again! Poor old Thomas Browne, kept inside a shed, labelled as art. Thank goodness they released him from that hideous construction! What a fabulous photo of the escaped cattle relaxing on the grass outside St. Peter Mancroft Church! The old nighttime view was so charming. I wanted to step inside the photograph and walk along the illuminated street. Ooh, I used to love going into Snob! Great picture of the old White Horse pub. Haha, the piece of land in the experiment became a carpark! The newly renovated Hay Hill looks so much better than before. It's so nice to see some greenery, although I do have fond memories of the old water feature outside C & A overflowing with bubbles! Thanks for a brilliant vlog ❤
Thank you for paying attention to remember so many things to write about. Apparently you could walk through the shed to see Sir TB . The White Horse pub would have been an experience. Thanks for watching.
Fascinating as ever, keep 'em coming.
Thank you Robert.
Lambert's on the corner of White Lion St. was one of the best retailers of virtually every 's smoking requisite' you could imagine in the 70s. A wonderful shop with the smell of so many loose tobaccos - ! 😊 Such a shame that the name on the front of the George & Dragon was chiselled off. It was part of the history of the building and such wanton vandalism should be illegal - ! 😮
A lovely description of Lamberts, thank you Simon.
Great video John. I well remember sitting on the grass below the statue of Sir Thomas Browne in the early 70’s whilst the aroma of another type of grass wafted around before sloping off to Just Johns deli in White Lion Street for a chunk of cheesecake. Things seemed a lot more relaxed then.
You seem fairly relaxed now Martin!
This is where all the goths and emos used to congregate in the mid 2000s. 'Going up the Haymarket?'
I've not heard that expression. Sounds like the Haymarket had a significance which passed me by!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich you weren't part of the emo scene of 2002-2005? I am surprised! 😂
You know me too well! @@lukewolsey
What was the reasoning behind building C&A and Topshop? Both are contenders for most visually offensive buildings in the city centre!
Or the card factory shop opposite. Yuck. At least Primark seems to have been redone in a reasonably nice way.
No idea! But I can't disagree with you! Next in particular is ugly in my eyes.
Another very interesting video of the history of that area but just think about the money the Council has SPENT there & other places like Castle Meadow & St Steven’s that in my opinion hasn’t been worth what it cost.
I have no idea how much h this cost, but I do feel it's an improvement on what was there before.
I remember the makeshift shed. You could walk through it right next to the statue. Had my first pub beer in Backs.
Thanks for that information.
Interesting as usual. I really like the the recent changes. Lovely and leafy with places to sit and the gentle sound of water 👍🏻
Thank you. Your description sums it up nicely.
When I was at the Art School in the Sixties, Back's in the Haymarket was a favoured venue (among many others!) for us and for the UEA people. There was a front entrance, and another at the back which was a passageway out into one of the lanes behind. When the police were in action on catching pot smokers etc., they came rushing in the front, and everyone rushed out the back. Next raid around, and the process was reversed. Back's management took a very dim view of it all.
Thank you so much for adding those details. Helps to bring it all to life.
Ah, so the brain has been removed? An urban planning lobotomy....🧐
.... somebody had to say it! 😝
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich It was irresistible! 🤡
Great piece John! As someone has already pointed out I do recall the waterfall foaming! It’s incredible to see the constant changes over the years. It seems as though the City Council could never really decide what they ought to do with the Haymarket. The latest iteration looks nice but for how long?
Thanks Kevin, hopefully for a while....but on the day I took my photos, the day after it had opened, there was already rubbish strewn about.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich It’s no surprise. Some people are far too busy, important and entitled to dispose of their rubbish. It’s always someone else’s job/fault/problem.
Sad but true@@kevintracey4644
Dad thinks the picture @1:22 might have been late 60s early 70s. He remembers the have picnic lunches on the green when he and grandparents would travel to the city for a day's shop
@@ElizabethHastings-r4j fantastic, thanks so much.
Yes i remember Saturday mornings making our way down to C&A an TopShop back in the 80's grabbing a bottle fairy liquid on the way and adding it to the fountain.
Lots of confessions on here today!🤣
I'm afraid I was guilty of squirting fairy liquid into the older water feature. Gravity took the suds to Littleworths doors and shoppers wading through the suds. As kids we thought it hilarious 😂
It's great of you to confess! It's gone down in legend, so I don't think you need have any regrets!
Hooligan!

I used to love going "Up the city" when I was little ❤
Up the city - a phrase which should never be lost!
We used to go 'up the city' even though we had to go down Ketts Hill to get there!
Ah, nice one! 😂@@stevecampbell9686
Interesting video John, I think poor old Sir Thomas Browne is holding his confused head, trying to understand why this area has had so much money spent on it, Looking back at the nice green grass photo with Peter Mancroft in the background is much better than the recent versions of concrete expanses. Trees, grass, seating, would make a nice change in the city centre, taking into account you only have to walk up to the forum to see another mass area of concrete.
I often think the same about Sir Thomas Browne, who probably never dreamed he'd end up in front of McDonald's. But it is the highest point of the hill and allows him to look down on what's below. Personally I like this new in carnation, but I understand what you're saying.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich We passed the area the day the fencing came down, there were so many office types in nice new hard hats, and bright shiny Daglo overalls you would not believe. the current incarnation of the area looks ok at the moment. but i noticed the steps were wet close to the water features, the wind had caught the spray. How will that be in the winter weather, you also mentioned the soap in the water feature back in the C&A days, and what happened with that. Let's hope people enjoy the area, next summer will tell. Looking forward to your next Video as always
Thanks Dave, yes I understand there are so.e complaints about people slipping. We must wait and see!
Another great video. :)
Thank you!
Excellent John! A Saturday lunch drink in the George and a wander round the city- and watching the bubbles after the lads dumped detergent in the the water feature , happy days 😊
