Thank you for all your support with your comments and interesting additional info across the videos. I appreciate them.
There was also a club called Peoples behind Anglia Square somewhere and I remember seeing Odessey and Rose Royce there.
I love Odyssey and Rose Royce, but never saw them there.
Excellent.
Thank you!
I love these. Please keep making them. They make me feel closer to my grandparents who are now gone
Thank you, that is such a kind comment. Much appreciated.
The toilets in Tombland were always full of pervy old men in the 70's!
This brings back so many memories. I lived on Colman Road, very near Jenny Lind and had a broken arm plastered there around 1968. Also, 2 of my sons were born in the Norfolk and Norwich. Lastly, my father passed away in Priscilla Lodge.
Thank you, I might have been in Jenny Lind at the same time!
Which building used to be Boswells resturant? They also had a nightclub above the resturant but I can't remember its name. Probably just Boswells...
@@flatulentcat1947 it was number 24, and the nightclub was Hy's.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thank you
I'd forgotten all about the The Noverre. Very intimate little cinema which showed slightly, Arty films.
That sums it up nicely!
There was a toilet on the corner of Bishops gate as you come through the the Cathedral close gates
Thank you for adding that one!
Every time you mention Zaks, my mouth starts to water.
Zaks zaks zaks 😃
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Cheers for that John... 🤤🤤🤤
Love all your videos John. Can I just mention that I usually get a humming noise on the sound. Not sure why, but I don't get it on any other You Tube videos? I watch via the You Tube app on my Sky Q box and my TV. Not sure if anybody else has this humming sound issue?
Thanks for your comment. I'm afraid there is a slight hum, which I have done my best to minimise on recent videos (with advice from a helpful subscriber) but it is still there. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything more I can do about it.
Nice video mate! Do you have any information on city of Norwich school during ww2?? I’ve been told a bomb was dropped on/near the school, but never been able to find any decent sources.
Sorry I’m a bit late by the way lmao
Thank you. I hadn't heard that, but my dad was at the school at that time. I'm seeing him tomorrow, so I will ask!
@ thank you, I go to cns right now, and have been very curious in the history of the school!!
@CiaranHague My dad was there from 1943 to 1948, but I'm afraid he has no knowledge of any bomb during the war. However, this map suggests there might well have been. www.invisibleworks.co.uk/the-norwich-bomb-map-digitised/ I had a chat with my dad about his memories of the school, which were as follows. Some snippets that may be of interest….each year group was divided into L and S groups. L for Latin, S for Science. The school kept pigs, feeding them with the leftovers from awful school meals. Pupils had to take meals to teachers who were sitting out on the lawn at the front. Once a jam roly poly was accidentally spilt on the floor, and the pupil picked it up, put it back in the dish and gave it to the teacher! This lawn is now the car park at the front. Pupils weren't allowed to walk on, unless they were delivering food presumably. The computer room next to the main entrance was the hall. The playing fields were superb, six full size football pitches, two hockey pitches, cricket and running track. In the war, they had shelters on the playing field, a corridor with seats each side. Other than that he doesn't remember anything at school that would have been different because of the war. Some members of staff he can remember…Dingy Bell (Physics) , Tommy Tout (RE) Mr R W Jackson was headteacher, who also taught Latin. Thank you for your interest in my channel Ciaran.
@ thank you mate! This is very cool, interesting to see how different it is today compared to back in the day, I’ve learnt a lot about Norwich from you, you’ve been a big help thank you!
Hi John. I'm currently working my way randomly through all of your videos and reliving my childhood/youth. Excellent videos and hugely entertaining. Do you do requests? Bit cheeky I know, but I'd love to see a detailed visit to St. Benedicts, and/or Colman road from Unthank road junction to Earlham road juntion. Keep up the good work and thank you for all you do for us home sick ex pats and everyone else.
Thank you, great feedback. It's funny, with St Benedicts and Colman Road are on my list, but I haven't done them yet because they are partially covered in other videos. For St Benedicts, check out one on trams, and for Colman Road, check out 1930s ring road. But I have more on both, so can definitely do them at some stage.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Yes, I've watched those already, thanks again.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Hi Again John. I've just popped in to say that I've finished watching all of your videos so far. I think what you're doing is amazing and your knowledge of our fine city, is incredible. I look forward to any new videos you produce in the future. Thank you for all you do and your continued hard work. It really is, very much appreciated.
That's amazing to have watched all videos! Thank you. Future ones will be out every third Thursday! @flatulentcat1947
It's a shame you missed out the second hand record stores. Perhaps in another video.
Thank you, good idea....but I can only think of two....I'll give it more thought!
Thank you John, great to see so much lost history.
Thanks very much. 👍
Paul Simon played the Mischief? Who knew. Loved knowing some of the legend that have played in various haunts. Great video.
Maybe he was inspired to write Bridge Over Troubled Water when looking down from Fye Bridge 😃
Nicely done. Keep it up.
Thanks very much!
Love your posts but one request from me, please increase the time each image is show if possible as I often find I’m only just orienting myself as to where the image is/what changes have taken place before the image disappears. Thanks again and keep them coming 👍
Thanks very much for your feedback. It's a dilemma that I have struggled with- trying to get the balance between keeping momentum with achieving easy comprehension for viewers. I certainly take your point and will do my best to get that balance right.
I used to go fishing under Cringleford bridge. We'd paddle under the bridge to get to the other side which was always private land.
Thanks for sharing your memories. It all helps to create a fuller picture for viewers who read the comments.
Such as shame that much of our city is now characterless boxes. Most of detest the 60's concrete box building, so why planners think we want new ones, but just with cladding on them, is beyond me.
Fair comment, thank you. I think buildings are not meant to last these days.
Well researched and a delight to watch. You also have the ideal voice for your commentaries!
Ha ha, thank you- I have been accused of sending viewers to sleep!
Such a waste of a massive space that they aren't developing it now. It really is a blight on Norwich which is otherwise a really nice city. Yet right in it's center is this grotty grey slum. I'd rather they develop housing there than keep bulldozing and concreting over the countryside as they seem hell bent on doing everywhere around Norfolk now.
Absolutely, and hopefully we will see progress sooner rather than later.
The building between the Free Library and Dukes Palace PH was No.4 Duke Street the black & white picture shows it clearly with two steps up to the door and the path sloping down towards the river. The picture of the “present day equivalent” is in fact on the other side of Duke Street, it has no steps and the path slops in the opposite direction to the left is Charing Cross. In 1965 I started work in the Eastern Electricity Boards, Norwich District drawing office of the engineering department which was situated inside No.4 Duke Street and before WWII was the original offices of the Norwich Corporation Electricity Department including the very same drawing office which my Dad had worked in before the war had started.
Very interesting, thank you for pointing this out. I can see exactly the point you make. I'll go back and look at the source material. Thanks for the other interesting personal details you've provided.
Amazing john really enjoyed that, thank you so much
Thank you Richard, glad you liked it!
THank you so interesting
Thank you, my pleasure!
Interesting as always John. Thank you 🙏
Many thanks Donna!
At 06:02 I can see just to the right of the end of St Giles church the second building along (after the white one) on the lefthand side of St Giles St where I lived from October 1976 to April 1977. My bedsit was the top righthand window. How strange to see it again but from an angle I never saw it. I walked from there to my ghastly clerical job in Norwich Union. I left Norwich at the end of the summer to go to Durham University.
That's great! Maybe you were in that window....
What a fascinating view at the beginning of your video! It was a great idea to ask the question and reveal the answer at the end. I admire the lengths you go to get the present-day shot as near as possible to where the historic photo was taken. Interestingly, sometimes the present view looks virtually the same as before and sometimes totally different. Thanks for another well-researched and enjoyable video.
Thank you, yes I love that first shot! To get the current shot as accurately as possible is fun, but rather time consuming!
Excellent video
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Excellent video John - super start to 2025 . I very much look forward to what else you put together for us this year. Happy new year John, happy videoing and best wishes x
Thank you Hayley, and Happy New Year to you!
Another excellent video John. An interesting take on the presentation. 😊
Thank you very much Simon, much appreciated!
Good stuff John, and I like the addition of the dots on the maps to show the photo location. I love these time scales because it's my nanny and grandad's time when they were younger.
Thank you Luke, glad the dots helped! I felt that might be necessary when photos were "dotted" all over the city! I think it's always interesting to consider past generations living within the photos.
Excellent as usual. Thank you.
Thank you 👍
Great video John 👍
Thank you Patrick thumb
Excellent presentation as ever. Proud to say I managed to supress my instinct and say St. James Hill, and with a bit of help from Google Earth, found the spot exactly. St. Peter Mancroft, the castle, Jarrolds and the Catholic catethdral helped ;-)
That's brilliant, well done Jonathan!
John, another excellent production and a great way to start 2025. Looking forward to your next piece. Thank you.
Thanks Kevin, Happy New Year!
There are 5 thatched buildings in the city.
Six I think: Pykerell's House: Located at 1 Rosemary Lane, NR3 3AF Thatched cottage: Located in St Swithin's Alley, NR2 4TX The Hermitage: Located at 52-54 Bishopgate, NR1 4AA Britons Arms: Located at 9 Elm Hill, NR3 1HN Weaver's Cottage: Located at 2-4 Lion and Castle Yard, NR1 3JT Waring's Lifestore: Located at 20 Westlegate, NR1 3LR
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks for that, I thought that I might be missing one. I enjoyed the film anyway.
@@TheClive1949 thank you, glad you liked it. It gives me an idea for another video maybe - about thatched buildings!
Cracking video as always John - I walked down Stepping Lane on Tuesday.
Not many people walk up Stepping Lane!@@martinthirkettle599
The view from the 35th Norwich Sea Scout hut brought back happy memories of my cub and scouting youth, the money-raising events held with garden fates hot dogs cooking in the Dell, and jumble sales. Thanks, Mr Atkins for another great post.
Thanks for your comment, and for sharing your memories!
Happy New Year John, and thanks for the first video of 2025.This was another of your videos where I saw the odd old photo but knew where the photo was taken even though they had totally changed.
Thank you Dave, it's always good when we can recognise things 90 years on! Happy New Year!
Amazing and audio sounds superb 🙏✌️🙌
Thank you so much! 👍
Thank you John. I really look forward to each instalment
Thanks very much Martin, much appreciated 👍
Brilliantly put together video. Well done.
Thank you Richard, glad you liked it!
Very interesting, thanks for this John.
Thank you Steve, glad you found it interesting 👍
What a great start to 2025 John! A thoroughly enjoyable and relatable video as always, thank you 🙂
Thanks very much indeed, really glad you liked it!
Love your videos John Whilst these videos are a superb resource today, just imagine what you're creating for future generations! Brilliant! Keep up the excellent work. 👍
Thank you very much Jon, really appreciate your comment 👍
That is so true !
Thanks for another fascinating video. As ever so much and, sometimes, so little has changed. Looking forward to seeing more interesting content in 2025. Hoping that The Festive Season was enjoyable.
Thanks Adrian, glad you enjoyed it. Happy New Year!
@ 🍺 Cheers, John.
You've done it again John! I was going for a quick visit to the City today to pick up a few odds and ends, now I'm going to have to wander about all day seeking out all these places! Thanks for posting and thanks for all your hard work and research. 😊
Thank you Peter, enjoy your day, and see how many of these locations you can find!
Thank you. How interesting.
Many thanks - glad you liked it.
Norwich already has a bond street😀
Very true!
I never realised how ugly metal railing everywhere looks until I saw these comparison pictures with how the streets used to look.
That's an interesting thought - thanks for your comment!
