I love Norwich. I was based 16 miles away at RAF Coltishall, and settled just outside of the city at Wymondham on the Thetford road
We have enjoyed Norwich too. Thanks for watching and the comment. Cheers Chris and Jess.
Yay! I'm from Norwich and most people from the UK don't even know it exists 😆So it's great to see you guys enjoying your visit.
We love it and are excited to explore more. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers Chris and Jess.
An excellent vlog, thank you. You covered the Cathedral very well with the mixture of still and movie images. You must return sometime and take advantage of the free tours available for all visitors. If you visit on a Saturday lunchtime or Tuesday afternoon you may be welcomed by us, Steve & Di.
Dear friend, that is just so wonderful. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It would be just wonderful if we happened to meet you all there! 🤍 Jess x
Nelson was a local (ish) boy. Went to school in Norwich. A great day trip out for you is to his home village of Burnham Thorpe, just a few miles inland from the North Norfolk coast. Great pub there much unchanged from Nelson’s time which serves some very good food. Nelson held a party in the pub in1793 to celebrate being appointed captain to a ship of the line. Hasn’t changed much since then.
Thanks for the info! We appreciated you taking the time to comment and watch our video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Another great video guys, I'm really enjoying discovering things about my country through your channel. Glad you're enjoying the UK so far. 🇺🇲🤝🏻🇬🇧
Thank you! We're so glad to have you follow along on our fun. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Norwich really is a BEAUTIFUL small city!.I have enjoyed many a pint in the Adam and Eve.Im glad you had a good time.I hope you got to experience Elm hill!.And a wonderful montage Jess and the gang👍👍
Thank you for your support! 🤍 Jess x
Thank you, amazing structurs built without modern tools and equipment.
It is truly astonishing! Thank you for your comment. 🤍 Jess x
I often encourage Americans visiting the UK to head up the eastern side, through Essex (where I now live) up to Suffolk and on to Norwich, Cromer and the beautiful Broads and coast. But no, most are heading up to York and places like that - understandable but they're missing out.
So it was great to see this pop up. I went to University in Norwich, spent many a rowdy night in the Adam and Eve, walked and cycled those streets so many times.
As to pronouncing the name . . . the real locals will say 'Naarch'. True story:
I was on my first teaching practice in a school on the Norwich outskirts. On Monday morning the class had to write a little diary of what they had done during the weekend. (This is a deadly dull activity since most children never do anything remotely interesting at the weekend.) But anyway, they were all writing away when a little girl came up to me and asked how to spell the word 'sharpen'.
I wrote it out neatly in her spelling book, she copied it out three times, and then went back to her desk.
At the end of the session, some of the children volunteered to stand up and read their diaries out, and I picked that one little girl as I was curious why she was using the word 'sharpen'. Had she sharpened her pencils? Had her dad sharpened an axe or something?
She cleared her throat.
"On Sat'dy oi went sharpen in Naarch."
Thank you for the recommendation. We have that on our much visit list. Appreciate your time watching and leaving a comment. 🤍 Jess x
😂😂😂😂
The "wonky" buildings are like that because they are hundreds of years old. Of course, they were built square, but timbers have warped and joints have moved over that time. Very good editing BTW. Thank you.
Plus they were just "built" and were not blueprinted and drawn out. If the timbers weren't straight were not straight.
Thank you! I love all the architecture here it makes my heart so happy. I love creating videos for you all to enjoy. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. 🤍 Jess x
Thankyou for your lovely effort.
Lovely. Been to Norwich but dont recall much about the cathedral. However, your vid tour was excellent and instructive and brought out the beauties of the Town & Church's architecture.
Thank you for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Town? How dare you! LOL!
Thanks to the link for this video from your "other" Norwich video.
I am pleased you seem to be enjoying your stay in the UK. We'd love you to returm once you have gone back to the USA.
But the Cathedral! Your video reminded me of my visit there, quite some time ago!
Your still photographs were REALLY good.
I'm so glad you were able to find it and enjoy the video. It was such a beautiful cathedral, and we love sharing it.
Thank you for all the love and support! 🤍 Jess x
Fun fact, the font is made from copper vat(s?) that came out of the Caleys chocolate factory. Caleys is still sold in Norridge and they have a hot chocolate cafe near the market square. And yes, it is delicious!
That is something that we did not know. Thanks for the info. Cheers, Chris
Another great video. I love Norwich and used to visit quite frequently as my parents had a boat that they kept of the Norfolk Broads back in the 90's & early 2000's. Have had a few drinks in the Adam & Eve pub which I always enjoyed visiting.
Very cool! Thank you for your continued support on the channel. 🤍 Jess x
Love all your footage, commentary and sound track. Fantastic editing. Really enjoyed it. Thank you.
Thank you so glad you enjoyed it. Editing is not the easiest, but I love it. Always working to improve my skills. Appreciate your time watching and leaving a comment on our video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Norwich is lovely, i had 2 holidays on the Broads and you can sail right into the town and moore the night, some great shops.
Please take a weeked and go to Chester, it's very diffrent and you can walk the Roman wall, also find out what a ROW is, amazing.
Fab, thank you for the recommendation! Will definitely look into that. We appreciate your support on our channel. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Hiya. Bit of trivia - the Dukes of Norfolk have been the only remaining Catholic members of the English Aristocracy. This state of affairs is known as 'recusancy'. Ironically, it's said Duke who's responsible for organising State occasions, such as Coronations, Funerals and the State Opening of Parliament.
Don't forget to shield your dog from all the bangs and noise this evening/tonight. Stay safe. All the best to you.
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing that bit of trivia. Absolutely appreciate your comment and support on our channel. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Norfolk is wonderful.
Glad you enjoyed my home City. There are lots of beautiful places to visit in East Anglia, and they normally aren't to crowded.
We loved it and look forward to returning to explore even more. Thank you for your comment and for watching our video. 🤍 Jess x
Excellent video, I have never explored the cathedral in such depth, thank you.👍
Glad you enjoyed it, we did as well. Cheers, Chris
The 'w' in Norwich is silent here (we say Norrich). You've almost got it. Grew up near here. In the summer we used to do the ghost boat tour which was good fun. There are lots of mediaeval cobbled streets in Norwich and it is the home of Coleman's mustard (my favourite). Also a lot of mediaeval churches (Henry VIII's wreckers didn't really bother to come out to Norfolk much) survive. As teenagers of course, we were mainly interested in the shops and night life!
Was the home of Colman's until the site closed in 2020. 😢
Thank you for the wonderful information! We love exploring and allowing our kids to see some lovely history that the UK has to offer. Thank you for watching and commenting. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
The last arch you walked through, is now the music room for the school, I've done lots of work on the cathedral roofs, fun fact if you walk to the roof of music room, engraved in the stone are people's names , where they where held prisoners through the centuries , lovely to see shame the general public won't see summer time , you should go have a picnic in the ground stunning , and norwich with its history, has so many films made there from netflix to mega films , you wou be surprised and thanks for another lovely video
Wow, how cool! I truly appreciate your time watching and sharing more about Norwich! Cheers 🤍 Jess x
I don't know if it was explained but when Norwich Cathedral was built a canal was constructed from Pull's Ferry to the construction site (down Ferry Lane). Stone from France was brought up the river Wensum and then up the canal. Timber was also brought in this way. It was the easiest way to transport heavy loads at that time. The arch of the Pull's Ferry building spanned the canal.
It definitely was and was so cool to learn. Thank you for watching and sharing with us. We appreciate your time! Cheers 🤍 Jess & family x
Norwich is one of my favourite cathedrals. It's so light and there's so much to see. The w in Norwich is silent. Heretics were burned in medieval times and Lollards were considered to be heretics.
I agree Norwich Cathedral is quite spectacular! I can't wait to return and explore even more. Thank you for sharing with us! 🤍 Jess x
Lovely video as Usual, I wish I had seen so many beautiful places in england as you have and I am english. At least I can see them on your videos. Please keep making them I really enjoy them.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! We're so happy to have you enjoy our channel. 🤍 Jess x
Thanks for our day out in Norwich today, thoroughly enjoyable, although there is much more to see. Edith Cavell is a 'modern day' English martyr, and part of her education took place here in Peterborough. There is a tendency these days to romanticize her name to Ca-Vell. Her contemporaries would have known her as Nurse Cavl. A true heroine, and I too have made a pilgrimage to her grave. It will soon be surrounded by Poppies as Armistice Day, 11th November, approaches. Please be sure and wear yours as honorary Britons.
Where was Chris's cap, did he forget to take it? xx
PS. Just the right time of year to visit the American War Cemetery, at Madeley near Cambridge!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful information. Love learning for you all. It means so much to us to get to take you a long with us, and you all share more insight. Thank you for all your support 🤍 Jess x
I am glad you enjoyed your trip to the Adam and Eve and the Cathedral. I live in Norwich and I am sure your friends told you that there is much more to see. You can take a guided tour of the Cathedral ( one of my friends is a volunteer guide). You just missed the beer festival!!
It was fab! I'm so glad you enjoyed watching us explore more of your beautiful country. Thank you for watching and leaving us a comment. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
A haunted pub in England? Never! 😂😉
Haha, right.. Nothing over here is. 😆
Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Lovely vlog ...your friend can't half talk...😅...sweet ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Only been to Norwich on one occassion, the market was very good. Thanks for this Interesting
Hopefully, we can enjoy the market there soon. Thank you for your comment and for watching our video. 🤍 Jess x
The best way for non locals to think of pronouncing Norwich, is that it rhymes with porridge
That is a great way to think of it. Cheers, Chris
I'm surprised that it wasn't suggested that you walk down Elm Hill which leads to the cathedral. It's a famously beautiful medieval street. Strangers' Hall (only open Wednesdays and Sundays) is also a lovely place, a fascinating mixture of periods and styles.
Nelson is often considered to be England's greatest hero and is also known as The Norfolk Hero since he was born in the area. Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London, commemorates him: he was killed by a sniper at the decisive sea Battle of Trafalgar against Napoleon whilst on the deck of his flag ship, The Victory. This great ship is still open to the public in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard and it is worth a trip there, perhaps by train, since the Harbour Station, Portsmouth, is right next to this fantastic site which contains such famous historic ships as Henry VIII's Mary Rose, dredged up from the bottom of the Solent, and The Warrior, the world's first iron fighting ship.
My favourite cathedral is Ely, also in East Anglia. The town is very pretty too and contains the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, who led us into a Civil War which resulted in the execution of the king and the establishment of a republic. (It only lasted 20years: when Cromwell died, we wanted our monarchy back.)
Most definitely, but we only had a day to spend in beautiful Norwich that time. We have a couple more tips planned. We have friends that live there, so we will be back very soon! Thank you for all your wonderful recommendations and insight. We appreciate your kindness and time sharing with us. We love Ely Cathedral as well! Have a lovely day! Cheers 🤍 Jess & family x
Hi. Found your channel thanks to the UA-cam algorithm (Probably due to watching videos of jets at Lakenheath). I live in Norwich. If you haven’t already I recommend visiting the 2nd Air Division Memorial Library which is dedicated to American servicemen who served in Norfolk and Suffolk during WWII.
We are so glad you are here, friend. Thank you so much, and we are so thankful for youtube's algorithm! We have not been , but it has been recommended to us numerous times, so it is a must-see on our list. We definitely appreciate your recommendation and your time. We hope you have a lovely week. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Thank you, thank you, for visiting my home town.
I knew you would like it.
Some cathedral eh?
😊
Yes, it's such a beautiful city! Can't wait to go back and explore even more. I can't believe the Cathedral only requests donations no fee to enter and enjoy. More and more of the UK/ England has exceeded my expectations. Thank you for your comment and support. 🤍 Jess x
@DaydreamersBarn
Once upon a time they used to say that Norwich had a pub for each day of the year, and a church for every Sunday.
There are some fantastic examples of churches in Norwich.
Next time you go, look for St Peter Mancroft, next to the market, and there are several pubs around there too. 😀
@andrewjones1649 Fab, I definitely will do! Thanks, friend 🤍 Jess x
lol funny to see you guys go to Norwich - I live here! And also your pronunciation of Norwich…
We enjoyed it and plan on going again. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Chris and Jess.
Beautiful video.
Thank you very much! We appreciate your kindness and support. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Just don’t have a night out in Norwich especially prince of wales road on a Friday/Saturday night absolute carnage, I talk from many years experience very medieval behaviour like our castle 😂 but welcome to my city
Thanks for the advice, watching and commenting. Cheers, Chris and Jess.
sunk Many a pint in the Adam and Eve , as I live in Norwich
Nice. Thank you for your time watching and sharing with us. Cheers 🤍 Jess & family x
Another bit of history, lot's of films made around the Maids Head Hotel, probably very notably the classic 'The Go-Between'. Filmed in Norwich and Norfolk. It's a bit of a romance/drama (one for the ladies perhaps) but has a beautiful message. ua-cam.com/video/3U_OI0HRG40/v-deo.html
Lovely, thank you for sharing this with us, friend! 🤍 Jess x
I live - and grew up - just around the corner from Norwich, in North Lincolnshire. I can`t believe I`ve never been to that city. In fact, I don`t believe I have not been to that city - even having absolutely no recollection of the place as seen in this video. It is quite inconceivable that I have not been there, and yet how is it that I am unable to remember such a place ?
It's definitely a beautiful city. Well, I haven't been to a place here that I don't like or think it beautiful. Hopefully, you get to visit Norwich soon. Thank you for your comment and for watching our videos. 🤍 Jess x
Scunthorpe, in North Lincolnshire, is about 140 miles from Norwich. Mostly single carriageway roads; not an easy journey, even without queues at Sutton Bridge!
Close enough Jess. Norwich is pronounce Norrich. The W is silent..... Now that is a *real* English pub! Most historical places forbid flash photography Jess, as hundreds of intense flashes over time would eventually begin to fade the colour of paintings, stained glass, etc.....We are fortunate to have all this history here Jess. There is a large private school in a small rural town about 10 miles from me, which recently celebrated it's 500th year.....
It's just so wonderful reading your comment. Yes, I agree we want to save the history for all that come after us to enjoy. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for watching our video. Cheers 🤍 Jess
Norr-ich
Most people actually say it like NORRIDGE
Thank you so much! 🤍 Jess x
Pull's Ferry is owned by Norwich Division of Girlguiding. Many years ago our Guides camped in Norwich. When booking the campsite we were asked if we wanted to book Pull's Ferry. We were rather confused as to why we would need a ferry!
Oldest pub in the city? would you Adam and Eve it!?😉
Great photos of the cathedral btw!
Haha, good one! Thank you, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Of course it's true, they know the names of the people they burnt
Very interesting! Thanks for the insight. We appreciate your taking the time to watch and comment. Have a great evening! Cheers 🤍 Jess x
GREGORY CALENDAR ADOPTION.....1578 TO 1752 ENGLAND
Thank you for your comment. Cheers 🤍 Jess
It’s Nor-itch
Thanks, friend! 🤍 Jess x
You know it’s ‘Norrich’ / ignore the ’w’!
Thank you for the insight. 🤍 Jess x
Norwich : Adam and Eve pub was used as a tavern when the cathedral was built ,pulls ferry was once a canal that was used to transport the stones to build the cathedral it’s now cathedral walk were you walked . The weather vain on top of the spire is the size of a donkey ! Peregrine falcons nest on the spire every year.
Suggest you take a walk along riverside walk left at pulls ferry and head all the way to Elm hill ( look it up ) 😊
Fantastic information, thank you, friend! Appreciated your support and time watching our video. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Hello. Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos and hearing your opinions on living here in the UK.
I've just watched your video regarding your trip to Norwich and absolutely agree with you that it's a beautiful city and has plenty going for it from the history to the shopping. But my main reason for contacting you is to recommend if you have the time is to return to Norwich in the run up to Christmas and especially the cathedral as the used to have a Christmas Market in the grounds and in the cloisters of the cathedral and its really worth a visit but check before you go because it was probably about three maybe four years since I went and it's in December but the actual dates in December may vary from year to year so double check if you decide to go.
But as I stated earlier, I love your posts, and you and your husband seem such nice people and I'd like to wish you well with everything thing you guys do.
Regards
Kevin and Angela
Kevin and Angela,
We're so glad you are enjoying the channel! I can't wait to experience a proper Christmas market. Thank you for taking the time to share! Hope you have a wonderful day! 🤍 Jess & Chris
