    Since wheels are rotating, it means they create a gyroscopic effect. A gyroscopic effect is what makes it difficult to twist and turn a rotating object (also one of the reasons why bikes become more stable at higher speeds). Now, the more rotating weight, the higher the gyroscopic effect is. Changing to carbon wheels shaves off so much rotating mass, and thus exponentially decreasing the gyroscopic effect which makes it exponentially easier to lean your bike into a corner, as well as get it back up and flick it into the opposite direction. If you just shave regular weight off of a bike, all you do is change the mass of the body that moves, but it has no effect on the gyroscopic counteraction that the wheels create. That's why it makes such a huge difference, and why people invest in carbon as well as forged aluminium wheels etc. It also means acceleration and braking is increased since you don't have to spin up as much weight - but the greatest difference happens in the cornering ability of the bike for sure - as well as the unsprung mass itself helps with braking and handling bumps and all maneuvers that have an impact on the shock and forks (which is almost everything you do on the bike). An expensive mod for sure, but quite possibly the most rewarding mod out of the box that exists.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 5 років тому +4

      Haven't ridden a bike with steering damper yet. Does it affect the flickability and low speed handling, or is it a gradual mechanic that only reacts when extreme movement occurs (such as vibrations or tank slapper as you say)?. I've considered getting one just to prevent potential tank slappers, but I don't wanna do it if it compromises the flickability and nimbleness of a bike in any way

      Where are you finding a $30 steering damper?

    • @HeroRR
      @HeroRR  5 років тому +5

      @@Real_MisterSir It depends on the Steering Stabilizer... not sure where one would get one for $30, I think he meant $300. Ohlins is the best steering stabilizer hands down. But they are pricey and can be difficult to mount. Scotts and GPR are cheaper and easier to mount, but not as good as Ohlins. Some bikes, such as my CBR600RR have OEM electronic Steering Dampers. The way these work is that they are basically OFF under 20 MPH but once you reach that speed where on counter steering matters the electronic stabilizer stiffens up. This gives you high speed stability, along with low speed ease of use. I'm not sure how the other ones really work as I have no personal experience owning one. My friend had one though... a scotts... and I found it difficult to move the bars at lower speeds compared to my bike. There was an adjustment knob on it though.

    Plus one on the Scott-oiler. It is brilliant. My previous bike (Series I Ducati Superlight, in semi race trim, Dynojetted and ridden HARD, sed occasionally for racing) had an Aluminium rear sprocket installed in 1999, and I did not touch the chain or its adjustment AT ALL (OK, OK, I had to during tire changes of course) for 25K kilometers. When I got rid of the bike in 2015 the new owner who lived across the street from me had it for another 4 years and never touched the chain either.
    That 1999 chain was the last one I bought. My current bike (bought in 1994) got a new chain in 1995 and in 1998 and then it got a scott oiler and since then it never wore out a chain again...
    It's frugal too: If I had to estimate a bottle of oil easily lasts somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50K if the oiler is properly adjusted.
    Scott Oilers are THE thing to have if you ask me...

  • @rockintigger
    @rockintigger 5 років тому +10

    Sorry mate, but I have to disagree with your 6th mod "Scott oilers". :-( Todays bikes have O or X ring chains which means the rollers are sealed, so the only reason you would
    oil the chain is to stop it going rusty on the outside. And if you don't have it set up right, you are throwing oil all over your rear tyre, "not a good idea"
    I have a V Strom. "granted only the 650" but it's just coming up to 34,000 mls. on the original chain. I rest my case. Totally agree with the rest of the mods.

    • @HeroRR
      @HeroRR  5 років тому

      Thanks for the input! I never used one before but i heard some people raving about them. I heard there’s an adjuster you have to set extremely low and you want it on the outside so it doesn’t get on your tire.

      @Pianissimo1970 5 років тому +1

      That may be true, but the o-rings still need lubrication, friction is the horse powers worst enemy, and if u dont lubricate ur chain u'r o-rings will crumble. Beside that, the rollers inside the link are not protected with o-ring

    • @tougerider1827
      @tougerider1827 5 років тому

      I have used a Scottoiler extensively. I only replaced one chain in the 100,000+km I used it. It kept the chain in primo condition and made for one less thing to worry about.
      One big benefit rarely mentioned is the reduction in friction over the long term. Notice how your bike rides smoother and rolls further after a chain lubing? The Scottoiler ALWAYS feels like that.
      Downside, it can be messy and the oil needs to be fed to the rollers for best effect. Applying straight to the outer side of the rear sprocket worked best for me. Still got oil on the rear rim and some fine misting on the tyre but that never seemed to bother the tyre's traction.
      From personal experience, great mod! Thoroughly recommended. Disappointed you recommend a product you've not used yourself though. There are other auto oilers out there...

    Some of these mods go back decades.
    Some RD250LC / RD350LC / Suzuki GT250 X7 owners were replacing their heavy cast wheels with lighter spoked (wire) wheels for track racing and road because this saved a few pounds of unsprung weight, even lighter if they used alloy rims. Cast wheels are the heaviest wheels you can fit on any bike.
    Scott oilers have been around since the 1970's, though oil bath and gaitered fully enclosed chains last the longest.
    Dyno Tune has also been around since the 1970's though originally for cars. Same reasons as for bikes today, OEM settings are generic, never ideal.
    I had braided brake hoses on my 1977 Suzuki GT550B. It gave a massive improvement to the effectiveness and feel of the front brake system. A very old school mod indeed.
    Other simple mods are:
    Filling all the cable feed in holes on the bike's Molex (the industry name for the multiple connector blocks) electric system with silicon sealant to prevent water rotting the wire in the connector terminal. If one lives in an area notorious for rain (Seattle, Wales, Manchester, etc.) it'll save much misery a few years down the road.
    Tuning the front fork oil to suit the rider's weight. Lower weight oil if the rider is light, higher weight oil if the rider is heavy. If your bike nose dives easily when braking then the fork oil is too low a weight. Fork oil is also colour coded (5W is red, 20W is green, etc.). Fork oil can be mixed in ratios to give intermediate weights. There are tables for doing this. Racers do this.

    That "direct to the calipers feel" you got with braided steel brake lines is for real. Rubber brake lines will flex a bit when you apply braking pressure and your brakes may feel a bit spongy, but the braided steel lines will not do that so they feel more firm and connected to the brake calipers. You can really feel a big difference on cars/trucks when you swap to steel braided brake lines.

I was surprised that the Venhill lines I've got coming were essentially the same price as the OEM ones that Kawasaki sells. Not to mention the fact that I was able to get them in red with black metal at the ends which should look a lot cooler.
      From what I can tell, the rear brakes are somewhat debatable, some people like them and some people don't.

Combined with correctly setup suspension , and even big cc sport tourers can carve very well . You don't even have to choose carbon , any set of lighter weight wheels will be beneficial to your ride . 3 more good ones i've personally done to my zzr600 that i absolutely recommend to anyone
    Clock swap: I did it because i moved from uk to germany and needed km/h on my clock so i got a digital clock with cable input not only is it a lot more clear (the lettering on the analogue clock seems a bit small for me) but it looks cool at about 60% the size of the original so i've added 2 more clocks either side (temp since it wasnt on the main clock and voltage because reasons) £50 for all 3 so definately worth it thinking about setting up an arduino powered shift light since there is room for it too.
    hydraulic clutch: so much smoother and because of the cylinder ratio its actually alot easier to pull now, probably not a problem for most people but because i have heavy springs it made things alot better for me so maybe more for cruisers, also it took all the cable roughness out and i dont worry about it snapping, i went with the really cheap ebay units which took some creative fitting just because of how my engine casing is but it will fit fine for pretty much any bike, the one downside for me was bleeding it was a pain in the neck and its stroke length seems to be only just long enough to disengage the clutch. all in for me was £40 (15 for hydraulic 10 for hose 15 for new levers) you need to get atleast a left lever with a cylinder on it for obvious reasons but vs the £300 all in one branded unit it's a no brainer.
    steering damper: the only reason i got one is because it looked cool, i wanted a radial but realistically your only real option is a bar type. i would recommend getting a full adjustable since you can loosen it off to the point it basically does nothing and is just there for looks however mine is adjusted about halfway and it does make a small (good) difference when hitting crap in the road. mine was £20 without the bracket (the bracket alone is like £50 @_@) so i made the bracket myself
    there 3 reasonably priced effective mods that will make a noticable difference without breaking the bank

    Triumph Sprint 1050 Ist Rider here.
    Many Triumph motorcycles come with an open ECU.
    Means that you don't need a auto tune or Dyno shop. Just TuneECU software (freeware) and a PC with USB.
    I have tuned a map myself and the bike runs a lot smoother now. The stock A/F Ratio was average at 13.8-14.2
    Lowered that down to 12.12 - 12.85
    More fuel injected...more actual power.
    ....cost of this modification ... $15 for for ECU to USB adaptor
    Eliminate the original cat and either straight pipe it or get a high flow cat.
    On my Triumph I went with a high flow cat to pass inspection but well worth it
    $129
    Change the sprocket on to either get more acceleration or better fuel economy.
    Around $30 for a set.
    I went more (theoretical) speed.
    So my highway RPMs dropped.
    Since engine speed is now less at 75mp/h then before I use less gas.
    Acceleration speed has not decreased significantly for me to notice. Since I don't full throttle and clutch drop it...lol
    Sure I might me slower then before but like I said I notice no difference. Maybe 1 second difference from 0-100mph...lol
    Clean out the air and fuel filter.
    Better yet get a air filter that allows more air. And a bad gas filter will not perform as it should and make the fuel pump work harder or even under heavy load the engine will hesitate because of lack of proper fuel being injected.
    Get good oil and keep the oil filter fresh.
    These friction on internal parts means more power (at least better running engine).
    These might not all be mods per say but you can always these parts with better performing ones then stock

  • @OranjVooDoo
    @OranjVooDoo 5 років тому

    Show me an engine that has been run on open exhaust and air cleaner that has blown up for those exact mods. I do agree that a tune can make those mods more useful, or make a stock bike more engaging. But really, this caution is like putting stickers on a swing arm to go faster. Modern fuel injection, even without oxygen sensors, can accommodate for more airflow gain than any stage 1 bolt on can provide. More fluid throttle response is way more fun, no doubt, but engine damage?

    A great mod, is replacing the Lead battery, with a Lithium one.
    But Ultra/Super-Capacitors, maybe even lighter than Lithium batteries. But I only recommend them, if you use your motorcycle every day, because capacitors have a very high self discharge rate, meaning, after a few days of sitting, the voltage may drop too low, to crank your engine. But if you leave them connected to an external charger, or you run your bike every day, so it's charging system will keep them top up. Then the self-discharge shouldn't be a problem. Maybe even with the parasitic drain of that Scorpio Security system, and it's great that system tells you what the "battery" charge is. So you can use that, to monitor the capacitors.
    Also. Capacitors have extremely low electrical resistance, compared to batteries, meaning, they can crank an engine quick & easily, and they charge very quickly. But Capacitors can't store the same amount of energy, as batteries, in the same size. So if you're used to using the battery, with the engine off, powering lights, a radio, or something. Then you will need more capacitors wired in parallel, then what can fit in the original battery space, to store the same amount of energy, as a battery.
    With all this stated. Super\Ultra-Capacitors, fit very specific needs. If you can care for them, and weight-reduction really, really matters to you. Then a Super or Ultra-Capacitor pack, is the best option.
    Wire them in series, to combine their voltage limits, for your charging system. And you can wire another set in Parallel, to have more capacity, if you want that.
    Here's a video about them. Look for more videos about Capacitors replacing batteries, to learn how they work, and how to safely make & use a pack.
    ua-cam.com/video/z3x_kYq3mHM/v-deo.html.

    • @observingrogue7652
      @observingrogue7652 5 років тому

      Oh! If you do make a pack for your motorcycle. I recommend putting it in a waterproof, sealed container, with all the spaces filled or coated with dielectric grease, to keep water away from the electrical connections of the pack. And use layers if heat-shrink, and other barriers to isolate the connections between the bike & pack.
      Remember. Super & Ultra Capacitors have extremely low resistance, they can charge & discharge, very quickly....To say the sparks or shock will be horrendous, if you accidentally short circuit them...is an understatement...Be very careful with what touches what...
      As a performance-oriented commuter, or delivery rider. I believe Caps are well worth the risks. Just don't be really retarded, stupid, or ignorant with them.

I would recommend 1/5th turn for 1000cc sportbikes unless you are doing mostly straight line stuff, then 1/6th (60 degree) might be even more fun. Those 1/4 turn (90 degree) throttles are great for beginners and for twisties, but not so good for the average street rider. Exhaust modifications don't have that great effect on the richness of the engine tune. Intake modifications affect your tune more by allowing more airflow into the engine prior to combustion. Exhaust is after combustion which has little to no effect to the fuel air mix. Better exhaust helps evacuate air better from the combustion chamber. Tuning the engine after an exhaust upgrade is helpful I agree. It will all you to change the detonation timing with the potential to make more power if you change the fuel to air ration and all the engine to run smoother.

    Steel brake lines actually gives a better braking on your bike. This is for 2 main reason.
    1) Brake oil will catch moisture during the time. Yes the brake system is isolated but not at 100% and moisture can pass through rubber lines. Steel brake lines will prevent this phenomenon.
    2) If you are a track guy, steel brake lines will actually prevent your bike from braking less while you are riding. This happen because the braking oil has a x degree of boiling temperature, the hardest you brake, the more the fluid gets hotter. Within a few minutes (like 20) if you are a really fast rider who brakes a lot, your rubber brake lines will expand, giving you less brake power. If you add up the moisture that your bike cought during cold nights, you will literally have no brakes at all within 30 minutes (or less) of riding.

    Better than stock tires. Steel braided brake lines. Good protective riding gear.

    You made me really want those rims but at $3500-$4000 a set, they cost more than my vtr1000f

    I have used Scottoilers on all my motorcycles - my 1999 modded ZRX1100 with 150+hp did 124,000klms on OEM chain before l changed it, adjusting chain tension required only when renewing rear tyre - l totally recommend - also fitted to my Husqvarna 650 adventure bike, keeps the chain clean

    nice video and interesting ideas, but....
    ...where can I find a 18" carbon wheel foe my rd350r, without robbing a bank to get a custom build one...? I'm afraid carbon wheels cost more then the whole value of my beloved bike...and no way you can get a 17" conversion (legally) in my country...
    BTW, I fitted braided lines and fast throttle some 15 years ago...they are well known by old sport-touring bikers...very useful, you're right.

    Carbon wheels on US and UK roads is a nightmare. No give at all and a pothole could end the wheel... Dashcam... Borderline illegal in Germany. Personal privacy laws mean cam footage is inadmissible in court and I've heard police will not look at them despite contradicting their "opinion". Dyno... Is it necessary on EFI bikes? I took my Gsx1400 and the guy could offer nothing extra. No more torgue, power or economy.
