    I broke a pair of stock levers dropping my bike and replaced them with some nice Puig ones that had an adapter that mated them perfectly with my bike. Feel was great. As others have said I think there's a difference between buying cheap knockoff parts off eBay and buying a high-quality part from a reputable company sold by a proper retailer.

    To be honest you point about levers where a reach. In fact what you should've said is unless you intend to put high quality levers on then leave them oem. Your issue was with cheap universal levers not all levers in general. Not to mention high quality levers always will have adjustability. Something now all oem even have.

      Some one pushed my bike and fell braking my breake leaver. I found a decent one that folds like those cheap ones and turns out they work. After a while I fell on the driveway and when it fell just pushed it up and it didnt break this time. I share the spirit of only use purpose made parts but hey, if it works then why not.

      My buddy is a race engineer who flies around the world to help race teams squeeze out hundredths of seconds here and there. He has built race cars of many types. His personal garage has a 4 axis CNC and commercial 3D printers among many other things. He said to me how good he thought those generic CNC levers are for the money and that for that price he wouldn't even bother trying to make his own. I've used them on a few bikes and I've never had a problem with function or fitment. I order the ones that are specific to the bike and they aren't janky at all. I've never understood Spite and Yammy's gripe with them.

    • @RainerMeier
      @RainerMeier 3 місяці тому

      In fact most bikes I know have adjustable brake lever. OEM Clutch levers although are not adjustable in most cases. So actually both are right - almost all motorcycles have adjustable (brake) lever and almost all have non-adjustable (clutch) lever.
      I prefer good aftermarket levers exactly for that reason as I have rather small hands and the OEM levers often are less comfortable and lack adjustability. Though I don't like the short ones but there are good length-adjustable or long aftermarket ones too. Also the flip-up ones might also be of benefit if you're planning to tip over your bike and might prevent breaking them in some cases (not all though). Also I have seen some OEM ones breaking off the complete lever as of lacking factory breakage points while good aftermarket levers often are designed to break off at the tip only so you can sill ride home.
      I agree that as a general recommendation using OEM is always safe and ensures quality. So not trying to change anybodies mind here. However if you order off e-bay you might just get "OEM style" levers which are not OEM but cheap aftermarket ones too. With questionable quality. The most safe way to assure you're getting OEM quality is to order them via dealership but at least in my countr ythis is usually even more expensive as ordering good aftermarket ones.
      And also not to forget: In some countries (like here) you need to get approved levers and you need to get them registered to use them legally on the road. At least for the brake lever this is true in my local country. Clutch lever is not to be approved officially. So this is why you see some bikes here with aftermarket (adjustable) clutch lever while using the OEM (adjustable) brake lever. Fully road legal, both adjustable. Safe.

I have tiny hands and need them adjusted all the way in to get anywhere close to comfortable. Then the levers are so long that they bash into my pinky and ring finger on every 2 finger engagement.
      When I tried out a set of shorty ASV’s it was like 🤯. The click on every adjustment feels absolutely premium, not to mention you go from having 5 adjustment settings to 100+ adjustment settings on each side. I have a set of ASVs on my bike - the inch-plus span adjustment means you can tailor them exactly to your grip. I like putting MRA racing screens on my bikes. I'm a big tall guy and they reduce the air pressure on my upper body and head at higher speeds without creating too much turbulence. I had them on my VTR 1000 F and now on my RSV Mille. Apart from that smaller indicators.

    levers is usually the first thing i do. i have quite small hands and for me on my hornet and my R6 (both 2001 models) the clutch lever was too far for me so i put on after market ones puig are good levers made in spain and they have the same feel as the original levers. they design their levers adapters specifically for the bike and then you simply bolt the lever in place on the adapter.

    Heated grips and a good aftermarket seat. I have yet to own a bike which has a seat that's comfortable after an hour. Oxford makes great heated grips and the newer ones can direct wire to the battery and they shut off automatically so if you forget to turn them off they don't kill your battery. These aren't necessarily cheap mods but they are great if you like to do long rides in a colder climate.

    • @fools_opinions
      @fools_opinions 3 місяці тому

      The Oxford ones are decent, I've had multiple pairs over the years with no issues. One thing to note though is that the auto cut off comes a bit late if your bike has always on lights. I forgot to turn them off once and I had enough battery to power the lights etc but not enough to also run the starter so I still had to bump start it.

    One thing that I've added are heated grip wraps that plug into my bike's USB port. Cost me like 30 bucks from Amazon compared to the 400 plus the OEM grip set costs, and in the Summer I just remove them and put them away until winter. Even though my bike is a sport tourer, I added ADV style hand guards to cut the wind for days like today when it's 40 degrees here in Colorado. Grips, guards and a pair of Alpinestar heated gloves, I'm set to ride today.

    So my new 1290 SAS so far has a new bigger Puig touring windscreen put on (clear though, no fancy tinting) and a Wings exhaust that is waiting for the first service before it goes on. I also had the head light protector and radiator guards put on the bike when I bought it. Will be getting a heated comfort seat in the next month or two also along with a proper rear tail case. Do have a soft tail bag similar to that Nelson Rigg that I am using with it right now. Have plans to put a cyclops turn signal lights system on it also, but that's only going to be next year as it's quite pricey and I need my wallet to recover a bit.
    BONUS: I already had to buy a new left hand mirror coupling for the bike to replace the stock one as that one broke when the bike fell over while parked on soft grass. Luckily, that was the only damage done and an easy fix.

    Remove the rear fender. In some bikes (RE Int650) the fender is independent from the plate bracket, and the looks improve so much. Zero cost, and you can put it back again if you need it for the rain season or a long trip. Meanwhile, your rear tire will stand out so much more. You can even do that on a front fender; some bikes look sick when the front tire is fully naked.

But it was a super cheap chinese brand, I'm not sure how higher quality like ASV would feel. Levers don't actually do anything to improve performance, but they can improve feel for personal preference like if you have smaller hands or just don't want longer levers I could see aftermarket being an improvement. Still don't get ebay or amazon levers.
