    RECIPE:
    Lentil dahl:
    1 onion, chopped
    2 cloves of garlic, minced
    Juice of half a lemon
    350g of red lentils
    900ml of vegetable stock
    Tin of chopped tomatoes
    Black pepper
    1 tsp turmeric
    1 tsp cumin
    1/2 tsp chilli
    1 tsp coriander
    1 tsp garam masala
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
    Optional extras:
    Coriander
    Rice

    Lime/lemon
    Sriracha/hot sauce
    METHOD:
    1. Blend onion and garlic together in food processor or blender.
    2. Cook onion and garlic in water until transparent (be careful not to burn garlic!)
    3. Add spices and fry with onion and garlic for a couple of minutes (add more water if needed)
    4. Add in chopped tomatoes, red lentils, stock and lemon juice and mix together.
    5. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 20 minutes.
    6. Cook optional extras of rice and broccoli if having.
    7. Serve with rice, broccoli, coriander and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice and enjoy!

    Speaking about red lentils, today at work some colleagues brought some homemade foods and usually I can never eat anything but one has made (or more like her mum) a Turkish lentil dish, basically cooked lentils mixed with chopped onion, parsley, green onion, some bulgur and formed into these fingers and you wrapped them in lettuce and top with lemon juice and eat cold, it was sooo good ! And vegan! I must have eaten half of them, because others were more interested in meat dishes. But yeah, that's something I have to learn to make because I love red lentils but don't know many ways of cooking them

      its actually not with lentils. the main mass is bulgur and the dish is called kisir.

    I cooked this Dahl tonight and ate it with a friend of mine. It was delicious. Thank you for the recipe. Although red lentils cook fast but I had soaked them for several hours. It is recommended that you soak red lentils at least for an hour before cooking. I also fried the onions and all the spices in coconut oil. All the aroma and medicinal qualities of spices is released once fried in oil.

    You should soak the lentils before cooking; overnight preferably. There are natural chemicals on lentils and legumes that prohibit some vitamins and minerals from being absorbed when eaten. Soaking (and rinsing) first, greatly reduces that prohibitor.

      It just won't be quite so flavourful. If you have marmite this works well as a stock substitute, or nutritional yeast. Even adding some salt will help!

    Looks yummy but when I cook it I let it simmer 2 hours due to the chili and peppers. It's a yummy dish!!!!!!

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  8 років тому

      Oooooh I bet that makes it taste so so so good! I sometimes leave it longer to make the spices come out too but have never done it for 2 hours!

    • @ElizabethNoelleK
      @ElizabethNoelleK 8 років тому

      +Madeleine Olivia actually when you undercooked with spices it does not do the dish justice and you can actually get ill from things like chili if they are not cooked in a prolonged manner...heartburn, gas in the chest, tummy ache. So I never cook dishes like this less than 2 hours. I learned this from an excellent chef. Really try it the difference will make it worth it and you will never want to go back! 😀

      @MadeleineOlivia  8 років тому +1

      Liz Gonzalez Oooh wow thanks for the tip! I am just lazy and want things quickly in the my belly haha. Will definitely try it in the future on a day where I am prepared. Do you keep adding water as it cooks?

    • @ElizabethNoelleK
      @ElizabethNoelleK 8 років тому

      +Madeleine Olivia no you just put on the water and whatever it needs spice wise - tomatoes etc and bring it to a boil then once it boils put it on low or simmer for 2 hours and stir occasionally. That's it! Viola!!!!

  • @isabelvelado4682

    it looks good and great and tasty but...we do have a SUPER different way to eat legumes here, so the food cultural barrier is huge! jjjj. I tried hummus like last year and i love it now..so maybe i try this recipe...i hope you do not take it wrong, it is not my intention at all, it is just that i find very interesting the those "culinary barriers" 🤗

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  8 років тому

      Are you from Spain Isabel (if I'm remembering right!)? This is an Indian recipe and I love Indian food! You should try it for sure it is very delicious! How do you cook your legumes? And of course not I don't take it wrong at all, there are lots of foods people eat in different countries that are very different and strange to me too!

    • @isabelvelado4682
      @isabelvelado4682 8 років тому

      +Madeleine Olivia nothing close to vegetarian...jjj. legumes are eaten traditionally with meat, a lot of meat, so for me, although i do not eat meat now, that is the way i have always seen so it is the way "it is" , the same happens with olive oil, for me is liquid gold (i know it has a lot of calories and that you do not have to abuse and better to use it raw)...food traditions! and family food traditions..thats another history..jjj. but maybe i give your recipe a go..i will let you know..jjj

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  8 років тому +1

      Isabel Velado I can totally relate! A lot of British food is very heavily meat/dairy oriented. So fish and chips, meat pies, roast dinners, meat and cheese sandwiches etc. Luckily for me my favourite foods have always been foods from other countries (English food sucks honestly) so Indian, Thai, Mexican, Italian etc. Definitely try it as it is very delicious and hearty :)
