Another day, another GameStop purchase (if you co uldn't tell, I ordered a bunch of consoles from gamestop recently 😂). This time I got a couple of the old phat PS3 consoles, which I have not seen at GameStop in many years. But something was odd about this console...

I just go to GameStop, or wherever, get my physical copies- and save TONS of money. I can't afford to buy sketchy stuff and don't even have a current gen console.

That "CECHE01 MG" PlayStation 3 console is identical to the what I have. I also have a CECHE01 MG console, which I bought brand-new back in the day and still have and play to this day. I did upgrade the hard drive in it, though, especially as the original 80 gig hard drive crapped out. I think I have a 320 gig hard drive in it now. I'll have to fire it up and look.
i went to gamestop and purchased a ps3 slim, once i got home i tried turning it on and nothing happened. they said it was working last time they checked but when i actually looked inside (warranty sticker removed already btw) the ribbon cable connecting the power button and disc drive button to the main board was broken... i dont even know how they turned it on lmao. i got a full refund, employees were very friendly.
Bro, that's a Frankenstein PS3. The GPU is not original, Sony swapped it with a 65nm or 40nm GPU. I was able to tell because the tiny 8 pin IC near the NEC TOKIN capacitors at 10:28 have extra resistors near it compared to a stock console, this mod reduces the VRAM voltage for the newer GPU's. The plastic piece beneath the CELL is also something that Sony installed on their Frankenstein PS3's.

If your going to buy a titanium or tungsten ring get it slightly bigger than your normal ring size because if your hand swells you don't want it to get stuck on your finger. Unless with a normal ring titanium and tungsten are very difficult to cut and sometimes the hospital may not have the equipment needed to remove it and if your hand swells too much you can lose your finger.

I don't understand this I've talked to a lot of gamestops and they have all nixed the magic eraser thing long ago because of the bad reviews... only people still using Magic erasers are doing it on there own accord

When you posted this video I had gotten a PS3 Slim from Gamestop and it was bricked luckily I got a refund for it and I went to a retro game store in another city and ended up buying another PS3 cheaper so it worked out

The 80GB PS3 model is actually the same hardware revision as the European 60GB Launch Model. The differences between this and the US 60/20GB models when it comes to backwards compatibility are that the first model used a combined EE+GS Chip including 4MiB of v-ram + 32M MiB of system memory like the PS2 sllim, the 80GB US 60GB European model used a modified version of the GS Chip including 4MiB of v-ram while the CELL processor emulates the EE in software.
The orignal models are about 99,9 percent compatible with PS2 games, when it come to the 80GB model I’m not entirely sure. I know that the compatibility is lower and was about 70 percent at the time the PS3 launched in Europe, Sony did increase the number of supported titles through updates and is probably somewhere between 80 to 90 percent with the latest update.
That said big mistake from gamestop selling bc models for the same price as models without it.
The not full backwards compatible ones go for about the same as the non-backwards compatible ones used

CECHE01 isn't fully Backwards Compatible. It uses Partial Emulation. Nice score on the Metal Gear model though!
It still plays like 95% of the games you’ll actually play though. Haven’t really found one yet mine won’t play.
@@12dbortle Yeah, apparently it's only about 12-15 games that have issues, and it's usually during cutscenes. Bonus on the CECHE01 too, is that it uses better hardware, so less likely to YLOD.

I've bought 1 console from Gamstop. It was my PS3 that started my collection, and I know better now. Its relevant because it was also quite sticky and took quite a bit of cleaning. I suspect it's the cleaner they use or something. Still I've never baught a console from them sense that first one.

Two ways you can tell if you're getting a BC PS3 without seeing the model number. The 4 usb ports is the obvious one, but also the silve part where the disc goes in. If it's shiny silver, it's BC, if it's grey/flat silver, it's not BC. Also CECHA01 and CECHB01 are fully BC, but use older, more volatile (i.e. YLOD) hardware, whereas CECHE01 uses Partial Emulation and newer, more stable hardware. Problem with CECHE01 though is that there are a handful of PS2 games (about 12-15) that have issues playing on that model, but mostly during cutscenes.

Also it doesn't matter if your PS3 has thermal paste on it or not if it's an original it's only going to last a year if you're lucky
I wish you could do a series similar to the Texas Load and the Hampton Haul again. I liked those two. It was interesting seeing how much you could profit off of the old consoles.

So, when it comes to refurbished systems, they're typically only tampered with if theres something INCREDIBLY wrong with them.
Furthermore, its not done in the store.
Systems are sent to the warehouse to be refurbished, which is an entirely different division and management structure compared to the stores.
Now, you'd think this would be obvious but when I was a manager at GameStop I would get harassed about the quality of used/refurbished systems, and every single time I had yo explain that all we're allowed to do in store is wipe off the outside and maybe use compressed air to get dust out of fans, and thats it.
No disassembling, no replacing parts, nothing.

I miss my old 60 gig ps3 that i had years ago, it got the YLOD and i had it fixed but the fan was so loud that it was unenjoyable playing anything on it, so i traded it in for a 40 gig fat ps3 and it just recently stopped reading disks.

Looks like Game Stop wins on this one. Low price for backwards compatible console. Both consoles looked like they were moderately cleaned out. However, they lose points for the wrong power cable on both of them.
GameStop appears to be hit or miss when it comes to their “refurbished” consoles. But I’m more likely to take a chance with them before getting anything from another “favorite” DKOldies.
My brother ordered a ps5 from Gamestop & he was given ps3 controllers with the wrong power cable.

The BC PS3 was the best PS3, although I'm an Xbox Head, I just wish Sony kept the Backwards Compatibility for the PS5.

The only mistake I see is people still buying the 60 gb PS3 let GameStop sell them it’s their job but gamers should be smart enough to know the 60 gb breaks if you play PS2 games on it I played a lot of PS2 games on launch day cause there wasn’t so many PS3 games at the time this console broke on my less then a month then bought another one that one lasted 6 months the PS3 was a joke

The 12 GB PS3 is actually a Super Slim (sliding disk door) with no HDD & no bay to put it in. You had to buy Sony’s HDD & bay kit separately or get the components yourself separately from a PC parts vendor.
These were sold primarily at BB & Walmart, Walmart especially in the transition from PS3 to PS4 a decade ago. I remember people coming in & GS didn’t stock the Sony HDD kit separately & I had to send customers to Best Buy or Amazon.

Edit 2: Maybe I need more clarification on just what exactly the MGS 80GB console can do, because other comments are suggesting it can play PS2 games via emulation, but not the entire library. I tested it with two old PS2 games back in the day and they never worked. Don't recall the games I tested though.
Edit: Finished watching. Yeah the 80gb MGS variant PS3 you have, will not play PS2 games. I recommend you testing it too, you will see! Still think under $100, if everything else works fine is a good deal though. Needs some new thermal paste applied, and maybe replace those "pads" with actual thermal pads that are used on nvme ssds.
Might have commented too soon, but do you mean backwards compatible for PS1, or PS2? The MGS bundle variant was not PS2/emotion engine compatible. That's the model I bought and still own. It's a solid beast though, haven't gotten the YLOD, but unsure if it would still work, has been in storage since PS4 launch. Looks like some decent grabs though.

GameStop didn’t make any mistake it’s who bought the 60 gb made a huge mistake 3 of them broke on me I stopped buying PS3 consoles until they released the PS3 that doesn’t play PS2 games go try playing marvel Vs capcom 2 I know that game breaks PS3 and PS2 games it broke my PS2 by stop reading all PS1 games and my PS3 just couldn’t play anything if your going to play PS2 games get yourself a PS2 cause it’s not worth breaking a PS3 I’m not sure what other games can break the PS3 besides marvel Vs capcom 2
Or get some random pc from a recycling centre and play PS2 on an emulator
