It's in an ancient Romen amphitheater that was buried in volcanic ash along with the city of Pompeii a few thousand years ago. Making playing here very special. And noted that the crowd isn't in the stands, they can only sit a few hundred people in the middle of the theater.
It’s great that you guys did a live version with Gilmour’s free form solo but ya picked a “lesser” version. Even if you don’t do a reaction, PLEASE watch the Pulse 94 concert version. It’s an experience and a must see!
I'm always curious about how the channels like this choose live videos. It makes more sense to search out a video from when a band/artist was closer to their prime. Especially when Gilmour is about 70 years old in this. Not that this video is bad, it's just definitely not a stronger performance.
@@tdu5777 Also Gilmour doesn't play the solo exactly same way everytime. He plays certain parts and partly improvises and the Pulse one is definitely also in my opinion the best one. But it's nice to see 70 year old Gilmour still going strong.
Spot on! When I saw the thumbnail and could see they reacted to Pompeii, I just thought why? Who convinced them to react to this version over the Pulse version which is the absolute pinnacle of live versions and seeing what they said about what they were told in the studio version reaction, it makes me question who they have giving them this information, clearly not an actual informed Floyd fan, it seems like the kind of Floyd fans who watched the movie The Wall and suddenly became an expert on not just The Wall but Pink Floyd themselves
@@ManWithoutThePants I'm not commenting on his solo. He hasn't lost anything in the guitar playing area. At this point (and at that point) he has with his vocals though. That's to be expected obviously. And his vocalists doing Roger Waters parts just frankly isn't very good. It's just not a great version to pick. And it's sad that for some people who watch this channel and are hearing a live version of the song for their first time, this is the first impression they will get.
@@tdu5777 Ok, but in my opinion also the solo in Pulse 1994 was a bit better although this was good too. I don't mind his singing too much. He has a bit of roughness in it by the age, but I kind of like it. But in general Pulse is the one to pick. Also the light show there is amazing. I'm not actually sure why I answered to you. I was agreeing you for sure, but I could've responded to original poster too.
If you saw where this show is actually being played you wouldn't believe it. Its at an ancient outdoor amphitheater in the ruins of Pompeii, Italy and the significance here is that no one really plays here except Pink Floyd! This was Dave returning back to a spot where they had one of their most iconic performances playing this 'venue' back in 1972, in the middle of the day, with no audience at all (except for the ghosts of the tragedy it would seem) and its some of their most brilliance work, most notably the epic song "Echoes" One of my favorite compositions of music across all spectrums. Pink Floyd have always been about the making the best quality sound possible but how they did it in this place is must have taken an incredible team. Watch the 1972 video to really get why it was special when Dave returned there for this show!!
Mad respect George & Ryan for going back to see David play this LIVE. THANK YOU for reading our comments. Thank Sweet Baby Jesus for video recordings so generation after generation can enjoy this music.
Awesome!!! My late father bought this Pulse dvd and album and i did as well...I currently have 2 sets now and I wouldn't trade them for anything...Pink Floyd and David Gilmore are the GOATS!!!
As some people pointed out, Pulse version is the most legendary guitar performance ever done. Sadly you picked the wrong version, even if this performance was good.
Was gonna say. Should have been the pulse version. Soooo good. Ryan - George. Even if you don't make a video - do yourself a favour and wach the pulse one on fullscreen and just let is wash over you.
Most guitarists will tell you David Gilmour is one of their favorite guitarists. It doesn't even matter what genre music they play. Rock, country, metal, punk, it really doesn't matter. We all recognize how amazing his playing is.
David Gilmour is the master of feel and any live performance of their songs can showcase that exceptionally. I can only speak for myself but at the same time I imagine I speak for a lot of people in the comments here that Mr. Gilmour is the reason I picked up a guitar, what a talent.
this is such a great version. the whole Pompeii concert is goosebumps raising. there is a version of this song on the Pulse album, a live album as well, that is not to be missed. in your spare time, check that one out. just search "comfortably numb pulse" and you'll easily find it. i have witnessed people brought to tears during the outro solo while watching that video.
The calmest/chill, I’ve ever been and always will be, is listening to this solo. It’s so much different (& longer) than other versions. Look at all those ppl, staring at them-singing their own song back with them…& not a soul speaks or looks elsewhere but at this extraordinary moment where David Gilmore wails his solo…the longer but epic version. That had to be the best 7-9 minutes of the audience’s lives! And everyone around that city, within the stadium’s view, could hear it. Magical sensory overload in my opinion 🥰🎶🎸
This song is the peak of musicianship. There is no words for feel that is in this masterpiece. I was in Pompeii last year, and visited this arena. If you know history of this place and in combination with this music, it is glorious. Cant imagine how spectacular it had to be to witness this performance live. I would say one of greatest performances ever. Say what you want, Gilmour is true master. Just my 5 cents :D
“In pocket” - PERFECT description! He always stays in the song, yet brings out so much emotion. His playing is purposeful and brilliant. And he was 70 at this concert. Wow.
I wasn't gonna say anything, because so many people already have... but at the end when you say "thanks to everbody who got on our ass," I decided to add one more. You have to go at it a third time. Pink Floyd Live at Pulse version is the one everybody was talking about. For good reason. Great as this one is, it's not The One.
You have not lived until you've seen the movie, "The Wall". The animation, the music, the "biography" of Pinky Floyd, makes it the greatest movie ever. Makes the songs come to life even more.
This is at The Amphitheater of Pompeii. It is one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheaters. It was excavated a loooong time ago. Pink Floyd recorded a concert film there in 1974. David went back in 2016 to record this. It is a pretty sweet amphitheater!
This was played in an outdoor amphitheatre, but I saw David play in the arena in Chicago in 2016 and the sound was immaculate. Hands down, the best sounding concert I've ever been to in my life. He's got a reputation for being a perfectionist in the studio and on the stage and he lives up to it.
Pink Floyd is/was one of those rare gifts that always sound better live than studio. This video was David Gilmour and his group. Richard Wright who played keyboards has passed in, Roger Waters Bass had quit years before. Nick Mason Drummer was on his own thing. David Still plays and sings. This was 36 years after The Wall was released. I will say I love David's skill and precision for this advanced age, he was in his seventies in his recording. But honestly, as food as this was, the absolute best version, and I know you'll hear it from others, its the 1994 Pulse concert. David,Richard, and Nick were in their prime and simply at their best. Love what yall do guys. Check out Pink Floyd Pulse concert Sorrow, or Keep talking, or the song that followed Numb as they show closer, Run Like Hell!
David knows how to stretch out the ending guitar solo, and yet still leave you wishing it had continued longer. Pretty amazing. This concert was in the actual amphitheatre as built in Pompeii so long ago: _"The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres. It is located in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, and was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. [...] Built around 70 BC, the amphitheatre is one of the earliest Roman amphitheatres built of stone"._ A little more history: _"Over a 4-day period in October 1971, Pink Floyd made a concert film at the amphitheatre, titled _*_Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii._*_ David Gilmour, the band's guitarist, returned to perform two concerts at the amphitheatre in July 2016 as part of his Rattle That Lock Tour."_ If you check out the earlier PF movie, it's just Pink Floyd recording at the amphitheatre, there is no concert. But that'll give you images of what the amphitheatre looks like.
@@marymargaretmoore9034 - "The early one" of which? The earlier guitar solo? Well, if it's any consolation, Rick Beato also thinks the earlier guitar solo is the better one... 🙂 Or do you mean the earlier concert at Pompeii?
@@garanceadrosehn9691 I haven't considered the first one really as a solo, but more of a melodic interlude, but I suppose it's a solo now that I think of it. It just has felt so short to me, but when I think about it now it's not that short albeit not a long one either. It's just that time flies when he plays it :). Also that one he plays pretty much like on the record always unlike the outro solo where he takes a bit more freedom and improvises more, but still holding the atmosphere and keeps certain parts of the solo close to original or the versions he has played live earlier in the career many times.
So back in the 70's Pink Floyd famously played in the ancient city of Pompeii, (the one that got destroyed by a volcano) in it's old ampitheatre & so Gilmour decided to go ahead & re-do the concert some decades later without the original band ( I know). Ampitheatres are designed to amplify naturally occurring acoustic sounds so imagine what happens when you bring electric music to them :)
Oh there it is, the "underrated" comment - which only shows the author's youth and/or lack of knowledge: DG is most highly recognised by music aficionados, esp. the more mature ones. Who fkn cares about what Millennial sheep think?
I have to admit i have watched alot of ur reactions, and the result of that it have made me accept more genres. I can enjoy so much more music and sounds, and give something i usually wouldn’t listen to a chance Thanks for lowkey introducing music
The guitar solo is so beautiful and anguished, there is something so emotional about seeing David play it in older age - it almost takes on a new meaning. Absolutely brilliant.
Even though this looks and sounds great and is a great version of this song the 94 Pulse concert makes this one look like it was done by kindergarteners!! For the 94 Pulse concert a guy named Marc Brickman the lighting engineer was basically given a blank check by Pink Floyd and they said see what you can do and he did!! So even if you guys just do it for yourselves you need to watch that version for an incredible guitar solo and a light show even though it was done back in 94 looks like it was done by aliens!
Shredding is not Gilmour's style. The emotion he draws from his playing is his thing. And his vocals are great too. Now that you played Comfortably Numb studio and live... It's time for Rush Working Man live in Cleveland! Please!
Mr. Gilmour is the master of "variation on a theme, with feeling". I have heard Comfortably Numb so many, many times and I still get a chill up my spine on the "solo outro" (that might be Latin😁). Peace to all...
Pompei was an old ancient Roman city where the people got buried, trapped and mummified under tons of ashes from the vulcano mount vesuvius, and thats the arena he is playing in. gladiator arena from the times before or around christ.
This Live version is absolutely incredible, yet the Live version that is out of this world is from Pulse '94. That's where it was considered the best guitarsolo ever made.
when it comes to the acoustics of the arena this was recorded: they don't build them like this no more. It was recorded in the Amphitheatre of Pompeii, built some 2092 years ago.
pompeii as a location is SO important in the history of pink floyd. they had a legendary 1972 filmed live performance to the empty amphitheater. it is ABSOLUTELY necessary canon for floyd fans. you guys should check it out. the performance of "Echoes" is particularly outstanding, imo.

I love Pink Floyd. It's was my very first concert in 1994, at the Detroit silverdome. It was the pulse concert. You should do "one of these days" or the entire double book album "delicate sound of thunder"
@nvorg1 - Which night did you go? I saw them on the 15th at the Silverdome, the second night when they premiered Dark Side in full on that tour. I was 14 when my dad surprised me with tickets. My dad, mom, my dad's buddy and I went. We couldn't hear for 3 days after but it was 1000% worth it. A night I will never forget.
@@ianfortier6796 I went the second night as well. I was 15 and I bought the tickets for my father and I with my birthday money. It's one of my favorite memories as a kid. My uncle was there with some of his buddies and they had a hotel room and it was just as smoky there (with pot smoke) as it was in the dome that night. We were on the second level directly straight back from the stage.
That is all the Stratocaster possible in one solo. It's possibly perfect.
That guitarwork leaves you everytime speachless 👌
Love this guys! Seen em live, Ames iowa, trippen balls! Happy u guys did this! They have probly100 great songs! Thx!
Pulseeee! THE best solo imho
Thank Sweet Baby Jesus for video recordings so generation after generation can enjoy this music.
watching on UA-cam at METAL GIRLS REACT TO PINK FLOYD
Oh my Lord I cried when I first heard this song David pulls at yr heartstrings Just touches the soul. An experience like opening Christmas present
I personally like the P.U.L.S.E. version guitar solo better but he still burned the house down here
Awesome!!! My late father bought this Pulse dvd and album and i did as well...I currently have 2 sets now and I wouldn't trade them for anything...Pink Floyd and David Gilmore are the GOATS!!!
That solo gives me chills every time and I’m 51 and been listening to them since I was 14
Greatest guitar solo of all time- book it
As some people pointed out, Pulse version is the most legendary guitar performance ever done. Sadly you picked the wrong version, even if this performance was good.
Was gonna say. Should have been the pulse version. Soooo good.
Ryan - George. Even if you don't make a video - do yourself a favour and wach the pulse one on fullscreen and just let is wash over you.
Yes, they probably got confused with requests because people were probably requesting the original Live in Pompei in the 70s also.
My thoughts exacty! This performance is good but the Pulse version, thats some out of body, out of this world kind of stuff..!
I like the Gdansk version.
An absolute fail that they haven't done Pulse, and probably won't now. What a loss.
Chills! No matter which version, just pure Chills every time!
This is the song to play when the world meets its end, the outro solo was so good
Most guitarists will tell you David Gilmour is one of their favorite guitarists. It doesn't even matter what genre music they play. Rock, country, metal, punk, it really doesn't matter. We all recognize how amazing his playing is.
David Gilmore just spills his soul in his playing, he doesn't scream and do acrobatics, he talks and pours his emotions out. Thank Yew.
It's always lovely to see guys like yourselves taken on the mantel and bei g able to reckonise such amazing talent
I love Pink Floyd and I never heard this performance. Thanks guys. Apparently, now I have to go listen to one called the Pulse version.
Pulse version blows my noggin off
“In pocket” - PERFECT description!
The first time they were there was the 1971 recording released in 1972, not 1974
I was fortunate to attend the second night of these two concerts. Greatest night I've ever experienced!
This song always make me cry. All memories with my father in this beautiful song, god bless you Dad.. 🙏🏽
Thank you for going next level and getting a full live version David Gilmour is a top 10 guitarist ever.
My favorite live version sentimentally anyway is Live 8. As it’s the final time the original members played it. And Gilmour as usual kicks ass❤️
That solo should be illegal. Genuine goosebumps.
[...] Built around 70 BC, the amphitheatre is one of the earliest Roman amphitheatres built of stone"._
A little more history: _"Over a 4-day period in October 1971, Pink Floyd made a concert film at the amphitheatre, titled _*_Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii._*_ David Gilmour, the band's guitarist, returned to perform two concerts at the amphitheatre in July 2016 as part of his Rattle That Lock Tour."_ If you check out the earlier PF movie, it's just Pink Floyd recording at the amphitheatre, there is no concert. But that'll give you images of what the amphitheatre looks like.
I actually prefer the early one.
@@marymargaretmoore9034 - "The early one" of which? The earlier guitar solo? Well, if it's any consolation, Rick Beato also thinks the earlier guitar solo is the better one... 🙂
Or do you mean the earlier concert at Pompeii?
@@garanceadrosehn9691 I haven't considered the first one really as a solo, but more of a melodic interlude, but I suppose it's a solo now that I think of it. It just has felt so short to me, but when I think about it now it's not that short albeit not a long one either. It's just that time flies when he plays it :). Also that one he plays pretty much like on the record always unlike the outro solo where he takes a bit more freedom and improvises more, but still holding the atmosphere and keeps certain parts of the solo close to original or the versions he has played live earlier in the career many times.
@@garanceadrosehn9691 I mean the early concert @ Pompeii from '71/'72
@@marymargaretmoore9034 - Excellent concert!
Gilmour is a true OG, I never felt like he gets quite enough recognition
Oh there it is, the "underrated" comment - which only shows the author's youth and/or lack of knowledge: DG is most highly recognised by music aficionados, esp. the more mature ones. Who fkn cares about what Millennial sheep think?
The best 🎸 solo of all the time
Yes the 94 pulse is the best version ever recorded I think. Mind blowing even.
every time David plays this live he changes it up a bit and I love it. each one has it's own uniqueness to it and still hits all the signature licks.
I have to admit i have watched alot of ur reactions, and the result of that it have made me accept more genres.
I can enjoy so much more music and sounds, and give something i usually wouldn’t listen to a chance
Thanks for lowkey introducing music
Gilmour is one of the best guitarists! He plays like no other. You can feel and hear it. I close my eyes and my soul feels every string.
Should have done Pulse guys - his guitar solo is literally mindblowing!
What makes this one better is how old he is
This one does more for me for some reason
Pompeii is better (IMO)
Pompei was an old ancient Roman city where the people got buried, trapped and mummified under tons of ashes from the vulcano mount vesuvius, and thats the arena he is playing in. gladiator arena from the times before or around christ.
The pulse solo is jus biblical..He really goes into the zone
Gilmour is the epitome of a guitarist who plays for the song, never showing off, always tasteful and a true legend.
This Live version is absolutely incredible, yet the Live version that is out of this world is from Pulse '94. That's where it was considered the best guitarsolo ever made.
Best live concert I've EVER been to was Pink Floyd in the late 80s...... perfection! Stuttgart Germany, outdoor stadium........they are INCREDIBLE
when it comes to the acoustics of the arena this was recorded: they don't build them like this no more. It was recorded in the Amphitheatre of Pompeii, built some 2092 years ago.
Ah really?! That's pretty small then, it looked like it was a larger concert.
@@Snoop_Dugg Yale Bowl, Michigan Stadium, and the Rose Bowl were modeled after the Amphitheater of Pompeii.
@@coloradopeoplesnews7676 That's cool to learn. I'd want to visit one of those stadiums one day.
@@Snoop_Dugg Watched games in the Rose Bowl and Michigan Stadium. Scrimmaged in the latter when I was in HS, but went to rival MSU.

Cool. I saw the “The Division Bell” 1994 tour at the Rose Bowl.
pompeii as a location is SO important in the history of pink floyd. they had a legendary 1972 filmed live performance to the empty amphitheater. it is ABSOLUTELY necessary canon for floyd fans. you guys should check it out. the performance of "Echoes" is particularly outstanding, imo.
It's, by far, the most epic guitar solo in music history. Period. 🥹
Check out (David Gilmour - In any tongue/ Live in Pompeii) It's just as good if not better. Don't hate me for saying it.🤘
This one and Mark Knopfler's "Sultans of Swing" Alchemy live performance are both great!
This is truly one of the greatest guitar solo ever, it is amazing
David Gilmore is one of the masters…don’t be surprised that older players can play great. They have a lifetime of musicianship
Yes sir! When you've practiced and performed your Craft for the duration Mr Gilmour has, you can bet he could do it in his sleep....blindfolded. 👍🏻
I love how watching yalls videos makes me kind of hear through your ears and listen to the song almost for the first time again. Sometimes I see a completely new perspective of a song I’ve been loving since childhood. It’s so cool.
The best version of this song was played at Live8 in 2005, in my opinion...with the original members of Pink Floyd.
I knew you two would like it. David is a legend.

The Pulse concert in Earls Court, London England is beyond phenomenal..even if you don't do a review of it...its a musical and visual experience that's unreal 😊
I saw David Gilmour on this tour in Chicago, it was an absolutely amazing show. They sounded amazing and the setlist was great. David Gilmour seems to be somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to putting on a live show and it shows!!
I love Pink Floyd. It's was my very first concert in 1994, at the Detroit silverdome. It was the pulse concert. You should do "one of these days" or the entire double book album "delicate sound of thunder"
Silverdome? U sure it wasn't Joe Lewis arena? Thought that was done with?
"One of these days" when the plane crashed in the speaker stands and the giant pig heads popped out was my favorite moment that I clearly remember.
@@estuder32anthonywayne98 no it was the silverdome. It was the one and only time I got to go to the dome.
@@nvorg1 That's awesome you did that, man! Your dad must have been so proud! That plane and the pigs in the towers were jaw dropping. Couple that with giant mirror ball that opened up during Comfortably Numb and the 30 minutes of surround sound before they came out, it blew my mind. Have you seen or heard any of the audience bootlegs from that night? I listen to it every year to relive the show.
FUKKING INCREDIBLE, and these guys are in there late 70's
"Time" is the perfect Pink Floyd song. "Comfortably Numb" has the godliest solo ever though.
The solo in Time is pretty godly too 😃
@@facelessandnameless 100% true. It's just that Comfortably Numb, to me, is the greatest guitar solo ever. But Time is my favorite song ever.
"Time" is one of my least favorite songs on DSOTM (but still obviously amazing).
Pulse live next time guys... Shine on you crazy diamond
I Completely agree with you guys regarding videos and live performances take away from the music because you're focused on what you're seeing. But Pink Floyd live is amazing. The Pulse concert to this song is amazing too. I actually like The Pulse live concert better but hey David Gilmore is great regardless.
The guitar in this song tells a story. So beautiful!
Never heard this version 👍,still reckon you have to do the pulse version, even just for yourselves, the lightshow combined with the ending solo is absolutely incredible, as Dave Mustaine said "Dave Gilmour can do more with one note than most guitarists can do on a whole fretboard "
Sat front row center in the New Orleans Superdome for Pulse in 94. No musical experience before or since has ever compared. That was after 4 earlier Floyd concerts. Thank you David for your talents. They remain remarkable.
